Strawbesties!! We now can cross out 4 out of 5 festival albums discussed on the shprism network- and we’re almost at TEN for RV breakdowns overall. This video is nearly an hour long and could you believe there were details in the script that I STILL left out because I sensed it was getting long. For example, I had a section where I discussed the 90’s nostalgia aspect of Birthday and how it reckons back to the time of child birthday parties and how aspects of the choreo reflect movement you’d expect from an animatronic. With the rise of kiddie horror, especially analog based in the format that Five Nights of Freddy is-I spoke about my curiosity on how if the franchise had any impact on the decision to pursue certain aspects of the comeback to begin with. It just felt like too much of a inconsequential tangent to include, plus I’m not a horror expert (I’m a baby, not a fan of horror at all so it honestly isn’t a rabbit hole I’m even willing to go down further. I get spooked easily). I also believed this to be true given the sound the album carries which was another thing that was cut out the script, but I might save the discussion of that for a future video as I have already drawn distinct parallels between Birthday and another body of work. Either way, I hope you enjoy this breakdown-I get a little silly towards the music video and don’t really go into details about the set design and composition regarding certain scenes. In fact there was a lot i cut out the script in regards to the mv but alas! Apart of me wanted to but I just felt like that was not the point of the music video idk lmao I felt like it was very intentionally silly so i treated it as such.
As a longtime fnaf fan, I can definitely see the connection between certain parts of the choreography that represent animatronic-like movements or poses. especially the beginning and end of the choreo. I love that you pointed this out! even the set design of the birthday party in the MV reminds me of the main party tables in the Chuck E. Cheese restaurants. and there's a stage set that the girls are on in the MV after they infiltrated the party that reminds me of the stages that the animatronics are on. I could see if the team behind Birthday was inspired by fnaf and Chuck E. Cheese. The MV is fun, and silly but still has a weird and maybe even unsettling nature about it to some degree. just like the fnaf games and Chuck E. Cheese. like people were unsettled by those Chuck E. Cheese mascots/animatronics but it also brought kids joy! Plus I feel like Chuck E. Cheese peaked in the ''90s/2000s tbh which correlates to that 90s nostalgia you mentioned!
@@shprism yes! It was a great connection! If you ever think about making that bonus video about stuff you didn’t mention, i think people would get a kick out of that part of the vid!
THANK YOUUUU From the start I was a birthday lover and defender and I truly don’t understand why this comeback wasn’t received well and I’d argue styling why and concept wise it was one of their best and most realized. I hope Birthday becomes like umpah umpah and zimzalabim which through time was much more appreciated by Reveluvs. Also Beautifully made video!!!
I feel like the Birthday logo is one of the few graffiti typographies in K-pop that was interesting, original, and enhanced the concept. I was so impressed with how you mimicked it in your Red Velvet birthday cake box video!
I really loved Birthday, is it their best title track ? No. Does that make it terrible? Definitely not!! They have such an amazing discography. And the creative direction, styling and packaging of the album is (some of) their best in my opinion. I loved all promotion photos, as I’m also a fan of the more maximalist design. The concept is such a work of art and incredibly underrated. The songs of the albums are really amazing too. My only problem is, based of some promotion photos I had expected more of a velvet concept, when the music video was almost only red. I still love it tho. Just would’ve loved some scenes where they’re in the kitchen or outside at night.
so basically like i explained, the concept photos were the basis to the music video which is why the music video does not reflect the concept photos. odd recipe is the recipe the girls must make to eat a special cake that will grant them their reve power, then from there they travel in the jeep. by time we see the girls at the entrance-the first two concepts were already done. the storytelling was set up via the concept photos so the music video could give us the finale. the promotional photos gave you that feeling because all the reve festival albums are red + velvet concepts-it’s a combination of both. i think a way sm should’ve solved this-as many reveluvs including myself complained, is that the b-sides should’ve gotten track videos that reflected the concepts that were given for the album itself. especially reve power, i’ve never seen such a waste of a budget before
@@shprismyes! I think track videos would’ve been an amazing way to make the album feel more rounded and fitting to the initial concept photos! It would’ve also been cool as bye bye and on a ride were quite popular.

Most don’t but I noticed it from day one once I saw Joy’s concept photos, all the references started to pop up in my head and I began jotting it down. They really did a lot for the set design of odd recipe, I get sad because I think if the photos weren’t so desaturated, many more reveluvs and casual fans would’ve enjoyed it. easily with more color these photos look absolutely gorgeous
i absolutetly love the concept of birthday and the song is one of my favorite rv tittle tracks, but thr mv does leave something to be desired. i wish it would follow the odd recipe teaser a bit more, the pixelated, grotesque foods with maximalistic style were one of my favorites they've done. the modernized y2k was also nicely implemented (like you said). the ReVe power photos also had an awesome vibe, more cybercore imo, with the car, the saturated pink and the clothes.
which is mostly what all in the fandom was expecting given the recent discourse that stirred up from a new comeback announcement. it sucks that we are now in a give or take situation when it comes to sm and music videos in comparison to the rest of the art direction. too many examples of music videos that are far too removed from the source material despite the fact that it would’ve been easier to incorporate these elements being that…that’s literally the creative teams job lmao

birthday and the rest of the ep has definitely grown on me with time. bye bye? a hit! i’ll bop to birthday for a bit but i will have to turn it off after the first chorus but it’s cute!!
@@yvesuslovesyou i feel like i’ve never understood the distain or boredom people expressed with this album, cause i’ve loved it since day 1 and i feel like if all these songs were on different projects everyone would’ve raved about them. birthday is cohesive, creative, stays true to the playful yet unsettling feel throughout and honestly is a cut above the queendom album-an album everyone immediately ran to say they love better the title 😭 i feel like people just don’t like birthday cause they don’t like the title track honestly
@@shprismthat’s definitely how it was for me i’m not even gonna lie😭 i feel like i was so hype for this cb then i got disappointed from birthday that it made it hard to enjoy the other songs at first (i even listened to the ep twice in one day i wanted to like it so bad) but i finally got it after like 6 months trust🤞🏾
I have a feeling they didn't take enough pics for Reve Power bc that pic of Wendy on the pink background.. I knew they were digging on the hard drives if they had extra photos 😭
There were more photos, there are photos from Reve Power that aren’t in the photobook that are in the Digipack version AND the SMini version. It was a team error 100%
I kind of wonder on what you think about the mv lacking the mixed media part and probably being rushed? personally it felt like it lacked vfx for storytelling, I didn't notice how the squid game thingy was being played till someone pointed it out, you have fully edited parts then some of them feel very empty. I also remember a reactor pointing out that the slowmo part lacked effects such as coffee slipping out of the cup or like natural ambient. There's also parts that felt like they were dragged on for too long( for a song that is so fastly paced? idk I haven't watched it in saur longggg
Eh, I never expected the mixed media style to be transferred to the music video because it was only ever heavy in the mood sampler and thus the photobook. I think whoever that reacted was, they were correct as the timing between when Birthday was allegedly filmed and when it was released doesn’t seem like a good amount of time to perfect the vfx in the video. I also agree about certain scenes being dragged out as well but I find timing to be a new issue that’s cropping up in recent SM videos as of late as well. As far as the bridge goes, I also agree! I think Aespa’s Savage does the 2D transition in a much more tasteful way whereas with Birthday it’s rushed. It also sucks because the 2D animation bit of the music video is honestly the best part of it. Colors flourished, the textures, the fluidity-it sort of had the charm that was lacking a bit in the final product
@@shprism the 2d animation was my fave too! Idk how possible would it be to execute through sets and lighting but I wish the color palette from that animation felt similar to the whole thing, the music video went very pastel and soft and I wish it wasn't esp for a song as strong as Birthdayyy
uhhh if you’re speaking about my login intro it’s painkiller by kane (the link is in the desc to their soundcloud profile) if you’re speaking about the birthday intro, it’s a karoke version of the iconic it’s my party by lesley gore (:
@@shprismthank youuu, i meant the one for the log in right when the video starts! i couldn’t find the soundcloud link in the description though but idk if i’m just not looking hard enough 😭

I loved Birthday as a TT, and the album is a masterpiece! I really don’t understand the hate it gets 🥲
could u do a video on chill kill? i rlly loved their concepts till release day
i have two videos in mind for chill kill but a breakdown would require me getting my hands on one of the albums, possibly will be doing so this month 🩷

hiii, loooove your channel!!! (no but actually i'm learning so much from these videos) mind telling me what software you use to edit your videos?
check the description of the video 🤝🏽🩷
birthday and the rest of the ep has definitely grown on me with time. bye bye? a hit! i’ll bop to birthday for a bit but i will have to turn it off after the first chorus but it’s cute!!
that bass on on a ride? eats downnn!
It’s crazy how a let down by Red Velvet’s standards would be most other group’s best work (ARTMS shade)
😭
OEC would not sing Birthday XS. Heejin might though…

4:40 I couldn't look at Red Velvet's Spotify page for a year because of this photo shoot. Like, it was a jumpscare every single time...
HELPPPP
I have a feeling they didn't take enough pics for Reve Power bc that pic of Wendy on the pink background.. I knew they were digging on the hard drives if they had extra photos 😭
just a random pic the photographer took during the break and the creatives were like "yeah that'll do!"
There were more photos, there are photos from Reve Power that aren’t in the photobook that are in the Digipack version AND the SMini version. It was a team error 100%
LETS GOO
indeed 😁
@shprism omg it was so fun you did so well!
@@gyal7892tankchuu ilysm that means a lot
34:16 I'm not sure if it would fit or work well, but what if the photo book was the platter that the cake gets served on? I hope my idea makes sense
it wouldn’t be practical unfortunately but your idea eats bad LIKE THATS SO CUTE…
Might the yeti be connected to the monster featured in Seulgi’s 28 Reasons photos?
Nah, Birthday’s is a Yetti - 28 Reasons is a bunny
46:53 The cat was there…?
Legend says it was an illusion fr
the incompetence with the photobook doesn’t even shock me that much, SM is so lazy omg
i got the joy cake album and what irritated me the most is how the icing on top of the cake is blue bc that's wendy's color 😭
they’re just doing color theoryfndj
@@shprism right but in the context of rv that messed w my mind&/)/$/ even tho i love that color combination
There's also parts that felt like they were dragged on for too long( for a song that is so fastly paced? idk I haven't watched it in saur longggg
and I also remember hating the lack of transition to 2d animation during Seulgi's fight sequence on the bridge like 😭
Eh, I never expected the mixed media style to be transferred to the music video because it was only ever heavy in the mood sampler and thus the photobook.
Seulgi was literally ANIMATED IN THE MV AND PEOPLE SLEPT ON IT ARGHHH, TH EMV WAS SO FUNNN AND CUTE AND EVERYTHING WAS SO CUTEEEE
exactly bestie
this is why i loved birthday so much and why did you let her FLOP?
🩷 as long as we continue to show it love, it could never truly flop
omgg what song did u use for the intro that is so cute 😭
uhhh if you’re speaking about my login intro it’s painkiller by kane (the link is in the desc to their soundcloud profile) if you’re speaking about the birthday intro, it’s a karoke version of the iconic it’s my party by lesley gore (:
@@shprismthank youuu, i meant the one for the log in right when the video starts! i couldn’t find the soundcloud link in the description though but idk if i’m just not looking hard enough 😭
m.soundcloud.com/kanemadgf
it’s not painkiller i was thinking of another intro lmao it’s the overdoSES
11:10 END THIS LIBERAL NONSENSE! WE, THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERIKWANGYA, HAVE NO PRONOUNS IN OUR CONSTITUTION!
HELPPP
This was one of their most boring albums in terms of music, but the concept's execution visually was TO DIE FOR!!! Like, I almost bought one of those cake albums.
HARD DISAGREE. i listen to birthday everyday y’all are just MEANIES
@@shprismJust for you, I’ll give the album (minus horrible ass Zoom) another chance once I finish this video 🫶🏻
