I think it looks beautiful. May I make a suggestion..... I'm from the school of thought that an intro for a short video should be no more than a few seconds using quick cuts. for a video lasting just under 7 mins, 33 seconds of intro is too long at like 8% of your video. It was put together very, very beautifully, and please don't get me wrong, i'm not pooping on the quality of it at all. It is just an opinion. BTW, I just subscribed and selected notifications!
I know the b&m is filled with sand especially when reside tial areas are around but one of my many home parks hersheypark has an invert by b&m and it's at full volume roar but it's also themed to bear so I guess it makes sense and I don't believe there doing it with there 2020 addition either

I used to work at Canada's Wonderland in 2017 in admissions. I used to work at the building in the bottom left corner at 3:42 .The coaster passed near there and boy let me tell you it was LOUD. It was like as like if rumbling thunder was as loud as a thunderclap itself. It can be heard throughout the whole park

If you want to hear the sound, look up the riddlers revenge off ride six flags magic mountain and you can hear the noise distinctly. It is one of the only coasters made from B&M that still produces the famous noise.

*Good Vibes* I use to live right across the street from Canada’s wonderland. This was before the Leviathan was made. The rides were still not that big of a disturbance as they were all inside the park. At the time, the behemoth was the loudest coaster but since it backs the highway, it really causes no one any trouble. Now I live about 7min away from wonderland. I had always wondered why the Leviathan was so quite until now. When you are in the park bellow the Leviathan, it is pretty loud. But once you are about 300-500m away, the noise is reduce greatly. In fact, once you are at the far end of the parking lot (closest to the road) the noise basically gone. You will have to pay attention to hear it. The closest houses are about 1-3km from all directions and I haven’t heard anything about noise complaints. In the summer time when the park opens, I will try and post a video with the noise of the roller coaster now to compare.
& not one sound of a rollercoaster was played..

I have never understood how people can move right across the street from a busy theme park and then complain to the county about noise and traffic. Make them deal with it.

It was made pretty clear in the video that the noise was drastically increased _after_ the residential area had already been put there. It's not entirely unreasonable to want the park to take some measure to mitigate the sound produced by the loudest-track-design-in-existence that was suddenly built so close to the houses, especially since it was so relatively easy and simple to do so.
@@4x4le I was on the mainland pretty far away from Cedar Point and you could hear the screams of the crowd over the noise of the roller coasters. One of the reasons that Geauga Lake closed was that the neighbors complained about the noise and the park had to shutdown early during the weekdays and on weekends. This caused lost revenue. Also there were major traffic problems. This didn't happen before the developers came in but after.

Great job! As others have mentioned, it would’ve been nice to hear an audio sample of each type of coaster. The graphics were nicely done and easy to understand. You have a great voice, too, for narrating.
When I saw the title, I guessed that the sand would be something to do with weight and stability. Sound never occured to me. Thank you for sharing, this was very interesting to learn.

I've been to Canada's Wonderland more times than I can count and I can personally say that even after the sand it still is incredibly loud! Also the first drop is so fast and so steep it takes all the blood away from your eyes and you actually go blind for a few seconds! Good video though!
Leviathan is one of my favourite rides I've ever been on, and can't wait to try Yukon this year.
This is such a common issue with home buyers. I grew up next to train tracks so I was used to 'em. But people that would buy houses around us would constantly complain in the newspaper about the noise of the trains. Like... what do you expect them to do? Move the tracks? People are stupid.
It was made clear in the video that the noise level was drastically increased, after the residences were already in place. Not entirely unreasonable to complain in that situation.
@@IstasPumaNevada yeah, but honestly even still. Just don't live next to a active theme park if you don't love the sound. It's pretty simple. I have a lot of noise from airplane take offs, I don't write the newspaper asking the planes to run their jets more quietly.
I think you're discounting the element of *change*. It's more like living next to a busy road that you can tolerate, but then they decide to upgrade it to a highway. When someone changes it afterward, the situation is now reversed - the residents were "there first" as it were and it's specifically the new roller coaster itself that's the issue, not the old theme park as a whole.
We're only human, it's only natural for us to address what bothers us 80% of the time.
Unfortunately some people don't think until it's too late. They're probably thinking: "Oh how convenient, I live next to a [train/theme park] maybe I can use the [train/themepark] to [get to places quicker/have fun.]

Space Mountain track is filled with compressed air delivered to it from park air and local zone regulators. In this fashion, a drop in air pressure in a section of track serves as a method of crack detection.

Good video, but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do NOT make the opening sound that loud. If you have an audio meter when you are editing the sound should be at an average of -12dB. This gives it room to "breath". But whatever you do don't make music or sound effects loud like that. Thanks.
I think a lot of people are trying to mimic modern movies, which blast sound effects and music, but have quieter spoken audio. I find it annoying enough in movies, but when I want to watch what is basically a documentary, I expect the spoken audio to be louder and the music to take the backseat.

I live 20 mins away from Canadas wonderland, I go almost everyday during the summer. I love that place
Let me make it quick. It makes it quiet. An example would be Talon, I believe people complained how it was loud or how it was near a neighborhood so they put sand in it to limit the amount of noise. I think the wheels also make a difference in the sound.

Yeah, now that I think about it Talon is an extremely quiet coaster. All you have to do is to compare the sounds from Raptor at CP and the difference is enormous. Thanks for that tid-bit, I wouldn't have thought about that if you hadn't said it!
Yes the wheels also play a role in the sound. Nylon wheels roar, polyurethane wheels are quiet
Great Video! I love the animation and how you explained all the aspects of solving the problem so everyone could learn something! A couple clarifications I want to make is that this was not a new solution, and B&M have had this as an option to parks since the early '90s, usually with pea gravel rather than fine sand, since it is cheaper, but Leviathan was a special case with it's large spine lift hill structure and your facts are correct as far as I know. This has certainly become a more popular option in the last decade. Another thing is, though this is beyond the scope of this video, adding sand or gravel also reduces sound by shifting the resonant frequency lower by increasing the mass of the structure, causing a great decrease in the gain of the system.
Also, sorry, this just caught my eye as I am watching it again, I have not heard the term "Fin Plate" before, usually a fin refers to a flat plate in line with the direction of travel. Think of LIM stator fins, brake fins, or fins on a fish. We usually refer to the plates you are referring to as Cross Ties, Rail Ties, or just Ties (In America at least, B&M I would assume might call them des braces?)

I honestly can't recall where I first heard the term "fin plate," but I've just gotten into a habit of calling them that. The term "tie" makes a lot more sense.

Regardless of the sand, I’ve been on leviathan and stood underneath it at the entrance at CW. The sound is definitely a cool feature as it sounds like a roar. Moreover, the screams of the passengers going by is icing on the cake.
That intro had my nostalgia on full blast of when I would build all sorts of different roller coasters in RCT 2 and then ride them from the perspective of a someone on the roller coaster.
Please make more roller coaster based physics and engineering videos, that would be great!

It was not the first. Not even close actually. All of the Busch Gardens Williamsburg B&M's have had sand filled into its rails due to complaints of nearby James City County and its high scale golf course. Many roller coasters have sand filled rails/beams

Indeed, Nylon wheels last longer too. Even if you use the proper wax, you will be lucky to get more than 2 seasons out of the new softer compounds. Providing you look after the track properly, white nylon will last for decades.
Batman the ride great adventure. In 1995 that roar was the best. Sounded awesome. Now its too quiet.
By having the sand in the structure, would this also make the structure last longer and require less repairs? It seems that the sand absorbs the sound which means the vibrations would do less damage to the structure of the coaster over time.
Travel With Tbone I was just wondering about the opposite. Wouldn’t the sand act like, well, sandpaper and eat away the inner walls in the long run?

Lower frequency sounds travel further than higher frequency sounds. The sound coming from the track is likely much lower frequency than the sound of screams from the riders. You can experience this by hearing that standing outside a concert, you tend to only hear the bass and kick drum whereas in the concert venue, you hear much more guitar and vocal sounds.
@@Tjkrusinski Another thing with lower frequencies is that they can vibrate large blocks of material that have too much inertia to easily vibrate at high frequencies like entire foundation slabs etc making them pretty effective at turning the building into a giant subwoofer pumping the bass directly into the ground which will carry low frequencies quite well too.

I know that the screaming passengers was a big problem with Leviathan. The tunnel you see placed after the first drop was placed after a couple of years because of all of that noise. I know this because I live right next to Canada’s Wonderland and sometimes when I’m with my sisters at their school, which is right next to it as well, we can sometimes hear the screaming passengers.
I hate when newer communities complains about issues that pre-existed their neighborhood...like building next to a highway & then begged the government to pay for an expensive soundwall.. highways & in this case amusement serves the greater good of a population vs. A tiny community area that again was there before the neighborhood
In my town a drive in theater that has been operating since 1953 had been getting noise complaints from a neighbor and the town even shut them down very briefly iirc. But they basically rewrote some ordinances and have not really did much about since.
I see it from a case-by-case basis. Sometimes communities have justified reasoning whether they are nearby or not (but still impacted), other times, yes they are petty.
The Shiracha Factory in Irwindale, California had emissions that affected people healthwise, eventually they had to install air scrubbers at their factory.
Soundwalls make a lot of sense (I live in the los angeles area) and are worth doing - they are often a compromise to removing or closing down a highway (or high speed traIn line if you're in Europe).
The suburbia near my state university is complaining of the growing expansion of the campus and its ten year plan to turn a street into a sprawling campus despite these very homeowners benefitting from the growth of the campus (especially when they sell their house) and the university attempting to plan/address current and future housing shortages.
My hometown had locals that made a fuss over taxpaid bikelanes, calling them street graffiti - the handful of complainers ruined it for the silent majority. As a small town with a lot of bicyclists, these complainers undid attempts to make the road's safer for bicyclists and drivers alike.
There was a jet engine testing facility, built well outside of the Detroit metropolitan area, where there where no houses, then the developers, put in housing next to the engine facility (Williams Int.), then the company, was forced to close the testing operations.

I watched the into to this video and realized I’ve been on every single one of those rollercoasters. Me and my dad are rollercoaster junkies and travel all over just to do coasters
This is also noticeable in PortAventura,they have two rollercoasters built by B&M, Dragon Khan and Shambhala. Dragon Khan has no sand neither inside thespine nor the rails (in order to make the ride "roar" like a dragon everytime a train is moving) ,but Shambhala has the inside of the rails filled with sand.
I may be wrong but to my knowledge ‘sand filled’ is more of name than a literal term. B&M have been ‘sand filling’ from the factory for many years but it’s actually done with expanding foam. Much less weight!
The B&M at knotts is way older than 2012 and it’s almost silent!

I've been to Canada's wonderland many times and have so many memories there, I'm from London Ontario
Kumba at Busch Gardens makes a really loud roar. You hear the chain lift getting louder and louder and then there is a moment of silence and you hear Kumba thundering down the first drop to go over the first loop. It’s an iconic sound that sends a chill down your spine and you can see it on the riders faces as they wait their turn.
I think it’s funny that people in the comments are talking more about missing sound of the rollercoaster than anything else of the video

Yes! So loud it hurts. Its really old and rough so I think a redesign is needed instead of just adding sand to dampen the noise.
I don't know if they got new wheels on the trains but on the 2nd of this month it was running close to opening day, and they do have the ride down for a full refurbishment right now until beginning of March so lets hope for a little new life to this beauty. Kumba is #1 roar I have experienced, #2 would be Hulk. Montu is getting rough though :(
That's very good to hear Greg. Everytime I'm at BGT I ride Kumba at least 5 times in a row. By the 5th time I feel like I'm going to go crazy lol. And yes, Montu is definitely getting rough. That is still my favorite inverted coaster.

Sand is pretty abrasive and used in applications like making sand paper and sand blasting.
I definitely would be interested in seeing if there was any wear and tear inside from the sand.
The sand will probably cause some very minor abrasion, but because it is never replaced, it will also grind down to finer and finer grains and eventually become powder, which makes it harmless. I'd suppose the sheet metal used for the beams is at least 10mm thick, so the effect won't have significant impact on the structure's stability.
Cutting metal takes more than sharp grains.
Lay a sheet of sandpaper on a steel surface, then drag the paper around without applying pressure. No real cutting.
How heavy is a grain of sand?
You need pressure, so the grains 'bite' into the steel, then you need to drag the grains across the steel, while maintaining that pressure.
Another way to look at it; how far are the grains moving, and how fast?
I would be surprised if the paint even got scuffed.

In fact, once you are at the far end of the parking lot (closest to the road) the noise basically gone. You will have to pay attention to hear it. The closest houses are about 1-3km from all directions and I haven’t heard anything about noise complaints. In the summer time when the park opens, I will try and post a video with the noise of the roller coaster now to compare.
I live very close to wonderland and have a season pass, I never really realized that the ride noise had been changed I really don't think that the noise changed that much. Thanks for sharing, and great video!! :D

Hershey park has a coaster called the Great Bear. The sound of it was the whole sell of the ride from the beginning. But it's in the middle of the park so it doesn't cause issues for residential areas

I love the old B&M roar. It makes me sad when I hear the muted sound of the sand-filled ones. Mantis... er, Rougarou and Kumba have some of the best roars out there.

The roaring sound of Leviathan is still so loud. I’d hate to hear how loud it was before the sand. I like the sound it makes, especially the turn-around by the front gate of the park, but I definitely wouldn’t want to live near that!

The First Rollercoaster filled with Sand was Black Mamba at Phatsialand, but here the Sand was filled bevor opening in 2006.
Black Mamba wasn't the first. Kraken at Seaworld opened six years before and was filled with sand so it didn't disturb the animals. Also, original Hulk didn't have sand in (it was extremely loud) but I think the new one has sand in the rails (as I believe all B&Ms now do - I've not heard a B&M roar like Nemesis or Hulk for years now)
Yes, DD was built with sand in 1999, and you're correct the new Hulk was rebuilt with sand due to complains from the nearby hotel. (Dragons also has a sound wall as well)@@marcussheen

What I learned today: Never live across the street from a theme park.
Very good narration and description - it had a bit of a school report vibe poking through in the background but think it was more the presentation format and mono-tone dialog. That being said, it was still interesting enough, and just the right length, to fill me in with the details but not lose my attention which kept me here till the very end. Still not sure why this was a suggested video with your 21k subs, but with over 1/2 a mill views you caught the you-tube algorithm right on my dude. I used to live exactly in that residential area in the video! if you go on google maps my house was in the direction of where canada's wonder land was facing and the house was right next to a non theme park with a tennis court

Thank You Engineering. It's due to trust in human engineering that I attribute my fear of rollercoasters abating. I still enjoy the thrill and the ride, but I remind myself everytime that the car is ascending the first hill that humans engineered and built this ride with my safety in mind and that the odds of anything bad happening, which is where the fear comes from, is so very very small. It helps me to actually enjoy the ride instead of living in fear of it.
