Stop Losing Fish: WHATS THE PLAN? (Ep.3) New Zealand Spearfishing

  • Losing fish is cringe, but avoidable. A successful dive starts before you enter the water! Planning and communicating that plan with your buddy (if there is one) is critical. Planning and team work can easily be the difference between not only landing fish but diving safely.
Best course of action varies enormously depending on the target, terrain and timing. This video is a fish that I feel lucky to have gotten away with. It showed me the importance of preparation as the fight would have been much smoother without my prior oversights.
This day was a summer stunner, meaning hundreds, if not thousands of boats out in the gulf. Trying to think like a fish, we pulling into one of the closer island bays. On such a perfect day, most boats would surly send it as far as possible. On this relatively quiet piece of coastline I was caught off guard by some very sizeable kingfish.
Grateful for every opportunity at these amazing fish, not every shot is taken but I try my best to make it count. I do my best to eat every part of the fish, smoking and boiling up many of the less fillety parts (not a word apparently). Spectacular fish and I am both privilege and stoked to live in New Zealand among this beautiful creature and many others.
I wish to see many more kingfish in the future and for everybody to have the chance to encounter these raw embodiments of ocean mana and natures resilience. Natural resources can be managed and harvested sustainably but that's not the reality of our world, yet.
Every year spearfishermen and women all around the world would account for many fish taken, most cherish their catch greatly. This is more in tune and respectful than supporting commercial fishing operations. Spearfishing is the future but there is a cost that can oven be unaccounted for. Lost fish, fish that are shot and break free. It's happened to probably everyone who spearfishes but it's really sad. You have no idea if the fish will live or die, maybe even eaten by a shark.
It is our responsibility to reduce mistakes and loses in order to minimize our negative impact on the marine environment. When you miss a fish 99% it will be avoidable, no body made you pull the trigger, you loaded the gun. Its totally avoidable in my opinion, you know when you have a clear shot, just take those. Maybe you do and you have never missed, but it is a fairly common occurrence, especially for newer divers and in competition environments
On a less serious note, follow me on instagram to see more content. Likes and comments are always most appreciated but I wont beg for them. Hope you enjoyed!
If this video helps some people and saves some fish, its a mission is accomplished

Great video brother!! Some solid advice 👌. We dont get Kingies in Okinawa but I can still greatly use the advice you give. Happy hunting brother!

Shot Bug, good to hear from ya. No kingies there but y’all get mantas, whale sharks and hammerheads (from what I have seen). Okinawa is certainly up there with places I would most like to dive.
The advice I try and keep generalised and not just applicable to kingfish. Landing a fish is pretty similar across species. I didn’t think “how to stop losing medium-large size pelagic fish” was a good title ha

I've found that the high shoulder shot holds surprisingly well but, not ideal of course. How do you like the pathos laser?

    • @BlueNeoprene
      @BlueNeoprene  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

The pathos was honestly pretty terrible off the shelf, but after adjustments/re-rig it seems to be very accurate and reliable.
The stock twin 16mm rubbers were not right for it, wonky shots and poor buoyancy. Mono filament shooting line is no good either.
Put on some twin 14mm rubbers(blue ofc) and dyneema shooting line. Now it’s much more useable and “lazer” like.
Reloading it is kinda difficult, fiddly line release and open muzzle. Muzzle design is beautiful however, big fan of the flopper catch. Shark fins tabs on shaft are less familiar to me but seem to do well.
Would recommend it for sure but not as a first spearflinger. I think that roller guns are superior in most aspects except for reliability and ease of maintenance.
When choosing a tool with the intent of killing it must be something that you can use effectively. There is a right tool for every job and while not perfect, the lazer ticks many boxes for me and it what I have been exclusively using for months!
Hasn’t let me down since getting rid of the 16s and monofilament. I don’t consider reload time to be much of a factor in spear preference. I try take few shots and make them count.
      I like 👍

Thanks for the full breakdown, I will keep that all In mind! Was asking cause I was thinking of picking up the roller version so this really good intel. Also, are you based in Whangarei?

@@dylannewman5569 I was for a while, but no longer. Decent place, great diving but wasn’t ment to be. I’m in Auckland nowadays for various reasons. Much more challenging diving in terms of fish, but I love the challenge!
