    I just heard about this type of meditation, however I have been practicing it without being mindful of it for many years. When I'm near others who are suffering (including animals) I naturally find myself taking deep breaths and feeling myself being filled with energy, and then intentionally releasing it while exhaling. I've always been able to sense the emotions and energy of others, and I have always been focused on easing the pain of those around me.

    I felt sadness at the outset of this meditation and tears welled up for those killed through our gun violence crisis in the U.S., for abused animals, for my daughter's adolescent angst and suffering, for the racism, hatred and lack of social justice in my country and around the world. Tonglen Meditation centers me, saddens me, and puts me in touch with my innate goodness, leaving me in a paradoxically groundless yet peaceful space. Thank you Pema Chodron for this gift.

    Thanks for sharing - this Tonglen is powerful, an inspiration to meditate in itself...
    Taking the suffering of others, and offering your own happiness will benefit all ~ Compassion is the finest of human qualities!
    Beginners keep it simple, dark smoke in - clear light out... start with yourself and work your way out :)

    There is energy to "just" sending a prayer or meditating on bringing relief. I believe it, i have confidence in it because i have experienced it in first person reality enough to know it as truth. It may not help like building a physical bridge or dropping water into a community without clean drinking water, but it IS SOMETHING! Don't you know that consciousness is so powerful, even a little of this medicine can help. But with enough of it, in turn hearts and bodies create positive change.

    When I read Shambala, it astonish me on how much it reminds me of Budo and the way of the Samurai. It's almost like this is where Bushido comes from. Bushido literally means "Way of the Warrior". "Only a warrior chooses pacifism; others are condemned to it."

    FYI Tonglen (Tibetan; Wylie: gtong len, or tonglin is Tibetan for 'giving and taking' (or sending and receiving), and refers to a meditation practice found in Tibetan Buddhism.
    It is a translation from a tibetan term. Perhaps best not to become to hung up on the spelling. Thank you. Could be spelled Ptawngllynn if you would like :)

    True. Fear is something you experience at the personal level. The simple act of jugging presents a challenge to the mind that must be overcome at each mile at each step. You may transcend aggression at a business meeting or when being summoned by your boss when you did something wrong. But the true nature of the male species is to hunt and be tested in battle. So, today man is lost. I believe that sparring centers your body and mind in a way not many activities can.

    she didn't seem to mention that in this practice, we on the in breath, are trying to take their pain and suffering into ourselves. we have the wish to remove it and fill our bodies with it. very simple. it goes IN to us. we wish to take on their sickness or whatever we are choosing to use as the negative thing

    It is pretty funny how we forget what we have in our house: the book of Pema Chödrön, the teachings given by other lamas and we simply fill our pantry of food and then we forget to eat them. Then, one day, there comes a nun friend and reminds us that we do have food in our pantry, that we do have to do the tonglen for ourselves too!

      No, it's not. However increasing awareness and compassion at such a visceral, personal level can very often help one be
      less overwhelmed and better able to come up with useful concrete actions to take.

    I don't understand this meditation. Am I suppose to lay silent focus on something. Or do I repeat it like a mantra in my head?

    • @thomasellis8586
      @thomasellis8586 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Simply use your imagination, on the inbreath, to visualize someone (or many people or other beings) who are suffering greatly. The more vividly you imagine it, the better. And take all that suffering on to yourself. Then, on the outbreath, use your imagination again to transform all of that pain and anguish into the pure, healing light of love and compassion for them, wishing them joy and equanimity. The main point is, there is no "right" or "wrong" way of doing Tonglen. Experiment, and see what works best for you. If done well, with authenticity, you will feel the difference--a more open, compassionate heart--as you go forth in the world.

    We develop our inner sanctity through the Practice of Warriorship meeting fear and transcending aggression
    Body and soul must then be purified. We meditate and manifest, but we must train the body as well.
    Therefore, I don't think you can practice Shambala teachings without the Martial Arts. And by that I don't mean Katas and punching air. I mean sparring and real fighter training.
    Meeting your fears head on through the real Kumite!

    Liz, it is not helpful in our existance to wish for what is not there. The nature of our life is polarity. That is what makes self experience possible. Without those conditions and relativity, no being could ever become concious.

  • @cobrajitsudojo
    @cobrajitsudojo 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    True. Technically, that's all they need to do. But keep in mind that thought does not manifest instantly and only subconscious though manifests. A material object comes to you through work, that is true. But you must want it. An immaterial abject comes to you trough subconscious thought and it's not wanting, it's beveling it. You can move mountains. The lost teachings of Christ point to this universal truth and they where kept secret for the Church and Kings to have power over the common man.

    ok so when i touch people i absorb their pain automatically and feel the pain where they feel it in their body....not trying to be a healer here but i would like to be able to hug people without the pain absorption....not comfortable at all !!....so this meditation would be trauma for me

    • @thomasellis8586
      @thomasellis8586 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is all in your imagination. You don't actually "feel" their pain and anguish--you simply imagine it vividly, so that you can more easily empathize with them and freely send forth your love and compassion to them.

      Liz Torres No creator in Buddhism

  • @fntime
    @fntime 11 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Why do you presume that the 'creator' is not compassionate.
    Pain is a necessary component of life in the material existence.
    It is a gatekeeper and a changemaker.
    Life without pain would be pointless, a happy 'womb' existence.
    If we can break the 'pain/pleasure program' we can
    attain our ultimate destiny.
    Nothing good ever occurs without pain.
    And nobody gets out of here alive without feeling physical pain
    and heart breaking mental pain.
    Trust the process and remain a human being!
    Good luck :)~

    • @svahas
      @svahas 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Because prana is necessary for healing or any positive change and without the ritualistic performance of pranayama one cannot have the power of that healing or positive change. I know from many years of performing pranayama for several hours each day. www.dlshq.org/download/pranayama.htm#_VPID_84

    • @ffrankk
      @ffrankk 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I believe a positive intention and compassion IS prana. It's the intention what makes it work, not the technique

    • @thomasellis8586
      @thomasellis8586 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@svahas Nonsense. Ritual is useful for some, but as Lao Tzu said, "ritual is the husk of faith and loyalty, the beginning of confusion." If it works for you--fine. But don't impose your ritual obligations on others who have found their own way of cultivating and practicing compassion. Besides, "pranayama" is just another word for centering oneself on the breath. And the latter is a common practice in virtually every authentic spiritual tradition on the planet.
