Hello D&J REACT [ @DANDJREACT ] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

Welcome guys. this will be a different experience. Nightwish with Floor Jansen played 15 songs at this Wacken concert in 2013 in front of 82,000. This is number 13 on the set list and her voice is still perfect. I have heard many great singers but few match her versatility from operatic to metal growls and whatever is required in between. She sings with so much empathy and breath control that sometimes it seem otherworldly.
I agree she is incredible and her band is amazing as well. I absolutely loved tge drums in this song.
To correct you (in i nice way 🙏) The bands keyboardist is the one that write almost all of Nightwish music (maybe at least 95%) so i would say that if we should say that it's "someones band" then i think we all can agree on that it's Tuomas Holopainens band but i like to see them as equally important to the band and i'm sure that both Toumas and all the fans feel the same 🙏

@@DANDJREACT I agree that Floor is so amazing that you would think is was her band but she only joined ten months ago. Nightwish had two previous singers, one operatic (Tarja) and then one pop (Anette) and the keyboardist, Tuomas Holopainen wrote every song to fit their voices. Floor just sings whatever is required for every song at this concert and takes them to another level.
Nightwish is still going strong, and has a new album (their tenth) coming out this year. They are from Finland and have been around since the mid-1990s. Floor Jansen, the current singer (the one in this video) has been with them since 2012. She is from the Netherlands and also has a solo career. Prior to joining Nightwish she sang for After Forever from 1996 to 2009, as well as reVamp from 2009 to 2016. She is also a frequent participant in Arjen Lucassen’s Star One and Ayreon projects. All of those bands I just mentioned are worth checking out. As far as Nightwish…you can’t go wrong with anything live by them, especially since 2012 while Floor’s been the singer.

Don't expect every Nightwish song to be like this. Every song is different and each one an adventure. Try any live performances from different concerts and you'll hear how versatile they are. Best wishes from an 84 years old Nightwish fan.

Saw them last summer in their last concert before the ongoing break, and I guarantee it was still magic. During the years I've started to like their heavier songs, however. And, I've started to listen more and more to their early production, with their original vocalist. Many real gems from these albums have never even been played live.

The band is still around. But Jukka, the drummer had to retire for he suffered from massive insomnia and tour-life does not help with that. He is now in the management of the band. Jukka is one of the best drummers I know.

Nightwish is a band made up of extremely talented musicians who play for the song. The result is a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. You have only scratched the surface of a group whose every song is different and there isn't a bad song in the bunch. Floor, the lead singer, is, of course, magnificent. The composer of most of their material is the keyboardist, Tuomas Holopainen, who is sometimes known as the "Metal Mozart." Emppu, the guitarist can do anything asked of him. Jukka the drummer is fantastic, as you have seen. Wait until you hear the bassist, Marko sing. The duets between Floor and him are epic, perfect, any superlative you want to name.

Nightwish Army Bavaria, Germany reporting for duty. Welcome to a wild ride, if you decide to continue this rabbit hole. I'm pretty sure Nightwish Army General Gabriel Bardac will soon show up in the comments. Just follow his list of recommendations and you can't go wrong in deciding which versions/videos are to choose. Be prepared that no song is like the other, the variety in styles, tempos, moods makes this band absolutely unique. But it is always unmistakeably Nightwish... Great reaction, but please guys, work on your sound setup. You sound okay, but as already mentioned in the comments, the artist sound is very tin-can-like.
Yea are set up is as basic as you can. The resources we have are very low at the moment. We are working on moving out of the USA to Asia so our dollar will go further. There we will get a better setup. USA is to expensive for literally everything.
Watch the entire Wacken 2013 live show this song was from. The show opener is Dark Chest of Wonders and is the first time most of the 82k in the audience had seen Floor sing with Nightwish as she had just joined the band as a temp not long before this.
Something more current would be the Tribal official live they just dropped which is live audio from 1 show & a video compilation of a few live shows playing the same song. In one concert Floor is very pregnant and still kills it Enjoy!

They just completed the New Album but unfortunately they wont tour it for at least a year....taking a break after just finishing a huge World Tour .....saw them in NYC in 2022 and it was one of the best shows ive ever seen and Floor is just Mindblowing to see in person .

Thank you!. Genre is Symphonic Metal. Genre and band is not so well know in USA. USA tour they play roughly 2000-5000 capacity venues, South-America 5000-10 000 and Europe 8000-15 000 venues. They have sold 10 million albums since 1996. Their last album(2020) was 1# in album chart in Finland and Germany, top 3 positions several European country. Finland most successful band/artist internationally. Maybe next just released live video from current tour song "Tribal" or same song from Hellfest 2022 or Pinkpop 2022(remastered)

When you want to go further on the path of our 1.83m (6ft.+) tall Dutch Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen besides Nightwish, here is some background information on the best and most versitale female singer of our time. Floor joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. Here are some of my favourites: ‘Energize me’; Monolith of Doubt’ and Dreamflight’.
Floor attended the then new Rock Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2003. She also studied 2 years at the Conservatory (1 year Music Theatre and 1 year Opera).
'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song from full operatic to death growls in seconds. Here are some examples: ‘Misery’s no Crime’, ‘Wild card’ and ‘Disdain’.
Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the North American Tour at first as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor had just 48 hours to learn the whole setlist. There is a documentary made of this world tour: ‘Please learn the setlist in 48 hours’
Floor joined Nightwish after this iconic Wacken concert in 2013 as permanent member of the band. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp’ also, but it was clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so 'Revamp' disbanded in 2016. Floor did a side project called 'Northward' where she dived into the Hard Rock scene. The song 'While Love Died is a must see.
Her stunning performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country where she was relatively unknown until then. There are numerous guest appearances with other bands to find on TH-cam. To see how to get a crowd of metalheads silenced and in awe watch her featuring with the band 'Epica' and the song 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa’ and to see her in full opera mode, watch her rendition of 'O Mio Babbino Caro' from Puccini. As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered TH-cam in these years. Mindblowing covers, chats with her idols and other singers, vocal masterclasses, personal insights and so much more. She even made a video reacting to herself singing Ghost Love Score at Wacken. Lots of technical info and some memories of her starting with Nightwish.
Also her Fan Friday videos are hilarious. Just unpack some of these and other presents she left on her channel. Also videos of her solotour she did with songs of her impressive career. Her latest endeavour is her stunning solo album ‘My Paragon. Floor is a high sensitive person, so peace and quiet is as important for her. Living by the woods in Sweden with her husband Hannes Van Dahl (drummer of the band Sabaton), daughters Freja (turns 7 years next march) and Lucy (born last october) ,a couple of horses, dogs and cats, she found this.

This song is only half as long as their longest song to date. That song is called 'The Greatest Show On Earth' and is inspired by a book of the same name written by an Oxford Professor called Richard Dawkins. It is a song which charts the evolution of the Earth, the evolution of humans and the evolution of music all in one song!
Because you liked the drummer (Jukka Nevalainen - pronounced 'Yookah'), may I suggest a song called 'Romanticide' from this same concert which is about the death of a romance, or perhaps you want to take a look at the new Nightwish drummer (Kai Hahto) who is also awesome and was Jukka's friend and mentor before joining the band in his place when Jukka had to step down for health reasons. He is showcased in a song called 'Weak Fantasy' from the Tampere concert. That song is a cautionary tale about organised religeon which was written when the abuse by Catholic priests was all over the news. They are both two masters of their craft with very different styles

I saw Nightwish live in Birmingham UK in Nov 2022, they are spectacular. Other songs, Storytime, the greatest show on earth, the poet and the pendulum, shoemaker, romanticide. Floor Jansen the singer has just had her second child so is taking things easier for now but was still rocking it right up to the birth.
Gosh she’s an inspiration. Such a talented women and hard worker.

Just for a drummer. . . . .It starts 6/8, 6/8, 5/8, 6/8, then 4/4, 4/4, 3/4, 4/4 then straight 4/4. The time signatures keep changing throughout the song. Then there's 17 key changes and it never resolves from chord V to 1 until the end just to keep you hooked.

Welcome to the show. It has only just begun. As a drummer you will probably love Nightwish doing "Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean" (w/Kai on drums) live from Buenos Aires 2018. This drummer, Jukka is amazing and has a very intense, flamboyant, and passionate style. Unfortunately shortly after this 2013 tour he decided to stop touring due to a severe case of insomnia. He still works in the management of Nightwish. Their current drummer, Kai Hahto is absolutely amazing, but less flamboyant in style.
You may want to forge ahead with several if not all of the songs from this legendary 2013 Wacken show. Gabriel below will provide you with everything you need if you wish to continue this wonderous journey.

So excited to dive deeper into
Mastermind Tuomas Holopainen probably foreshadowed here the separation from the first singer Tarja Turonen in 2003 (which took place in 2005). There were already rumors about the separation. The song is the third longest song performed live. Pirates of the Caribbean was released in cinemas in 2003, when the song was created. Well recognized.
The pipes are fake and hide 3 keyboards. There are a lot of badass musicians in metal. The motto of metal is harder, faster, louder. The metal scene always wants to test and push the boundaries of what is possible. This is one of drummer Jukka Nevalainen's last concerts. He has to stop recording the next album due to chronic insomnia and asks his friend Kai Hahto to step in temporarily. Today he works in the band's management and Kai is his successor. Kai is just as good.
Symphonic metal bands are typically female-fronted. The Subgenre thrives on the balance of hard and soft. Singer Floor Jansen only has half the vocal range of Dimash.. But both are singing nerds and extremely versatile.
The bull's head is the logo of the Wacken Open Air. The event site used to be a cattle pasture. Because of the pre-installed technology and wandering fans, it is now a hayfield.
The current, two week old video is from last year's tour, with a song from 2020. A new album has been recorded and will be released this year:

D&J React, welcome to Nightwish from the Canadian Division of the Army. The third and Current singer Floor Jansen is very active still. The band is working on a new album at this time and there are no plans for a tour. Floor is also working on a solo career and released an album last year. Tuomas the keyboardist writes most of the music for Nightwish. They perform some of the longest songs of any band I have ever heard. For starters I would follow General Gabiel's list to start your journey.

The 6 foot, Dutch Goddess of all things vocal is Floor Jansen.
The band hails from Finland and yes, they are still active in music.
In fact, they are in the process of finishing up their 10th album.
Unfortunately, they have announced that they will not be touring this year.
Floor and husband/Sabaton drummer, Hannes Van Dahl, had their second baby girl, Lucy, only 2 months ago.
Yes, Floor performed while pregnant which she also did with her first child, Freja.
Floor suffered a collapse after the last concert of the tour and had to cancel her last 2 solo shows.
Floor is classically trained and knows more about how to use the vocal mechanism than any singer I know.
She also prides herself a "geek" on the topic of the anatomy of the vocal mechanism. From breath control in the diaphragm, rib muscles, and lungs, to the resonating tone created by the shape of the skull, and absolutely everything in between.
This specific performance is as much an introduction to Floor's versatility as a singer, as it is an introduction to Nightwish.
Founder, and keyboard player, Tuomas Holopainen composes all music and lyrics with small contributions from bassist and singer, Marko Hietala.
Unfortunately, Marko resigned from Nightwish on January 12, 2021 because of displeasures with the music industry and chronic depression.
Drummer, Jukka Nevelainen, also retired from playing in 2014 due to an overwhelming battle with insomnia and migraines.
Jukka's replacement was WinterSun drummer and close friend, Kai Hahto, and Marko's replacement in 2021 was WinterSun bassist, Jukka Koskinen.
Floor joined Nightwish for the first time on October 1st 2012 in Seattle, Washington and became permanent 2 months before this performance.
When she was told about the opportunity to fill in on vocals, she was still recovering from a burnout she suffered in 2011.
This is by far the most successful show they have performed to date as this is the venue most recommended to new Nightwish listeners to introduce Floor.
Nightwish has had 2 other singers...
Tarja Turunen which was fired in 2005 caused Nightwish to lose a lot of their fan base and the media blaming Tuomas for her dismissal.
In 2007, Annete Olzon replaced Tarja and recorded 2 albums with them. Dark Passion Play in 2007 and Imaginaerum in 2011.
During the Imaginaerum World Tour, Anette became ill and was rushed to the hospital. Her last show was performed on September 29, 2012.
Through the rest of the tour, fans in the US, South America, and Europe experienced a magical moment as they were introduced to Floor Jansen with Nightwish for the first time and this concert was included in that tour.
You're going to love this journey. The rabbit hole goes deep, so buckle up and enjoy the ride.

Nightwish has a new album in post-production right now. Vocalist Floor Jansen released a solo album last year. So yes, they're VERY active.

@D&J REACT: Hey guys! I wanted to pop in here and say that yes, Floor Jansen, the singer, is still active -- not just with Nightwish, but also with her own stuff. She also just had her second child not too long ago.
The drummer, Jukka Nevalainen (pronounced "yoo•ka nev•ah•lie•nen") sadly has had to step down from performing. The reason is, when he did perform, he suffered from severe insomnia. The reason why is that mentally, his " fight or flight" system could never be calm enough to let him sleep. Essentially, it comes down to having your mind always be alert. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but the older of you two seems as if you are a military veteran. If so, you know about sentry duty in other places, other countries, and how being hyper-aware is mentally draining. That, in a nutshell, is why Jukka had insomnia. Literally, he got two, maybe three hours of sleep a night for over three years. After learning about this, I made the analogy that if a person was a car, insomnia is like running an engine at redline -- and Jukka did that for three years. And just like a car, sooner or later, if it's not taken care of, something will break.
In 2015, after this tour, he officially stepped down as Nightwish's drummer because he didn't know if he could handle the mental stress. He has, however, since then played in a few shows in Europe Nightwish has done (I'm not sure if it was 2019 or 2020; could be 2022), as Tuomas, the keyboardist, and the rest of the band wants to make sure he is good to go. From a French interview I read with Tuomas, Jukka wants to get back on the kit again and play. When he did play those few shows, Tuomas compared it to Jukka being like a kid riding a rollercoaster.
Since Jukka stepped down, he was able to convince Kai Hahto, the drummer from WinterSun, to take his place, as Kai is Jukka's mentor and teacher. Kai has been Nightwish's "official drummer" since 2015, and has played the drums on both Endless Forms Most Beautiful and Human :||: Nature.
As it stands: You guys need to react to Sabaton! I say this because Floor Jansen is married to Hannes Van Dahl, Sabaton's drummer. Sabaton is a power metal band from Sweden, and they sing about military history. Should you react to Sabaton, there is an unwritten rule: ALWAYS let the video play out until the end, as Sabaton is known for putting in quotes and information at the end; or, as for Christmas Truce, having a "special guest" sing the ending vocals. As such, I recommend these Top 5 videos:

Every song is different, and always a musical adventure. Floor is the most versatile singer i have heard. For the record it is pronounced vacken, in German the w is pronounced as v and the v as f. Wacken is an area with long history in catle raising therefore the bull skull is the logo of the festival taking place there which is considered probably biggest metal festival globally.

Is she and are they still active... Hell Yeah !!! I saw them live in June last year and the new Album comes out some time in Spring. And while this is very melodic, they also have a totally different gear in them. For a nice contrast to this song, try Romanticide from the same concert. You'll be surprised. They literally are one of the best bands that was kept hidden from most Americans 😂🖤🤘

The time constraint on songs has been around since radio was invented, because time, you know, is money in that business. That why they preferred shorter singles because they could sell more advertising. There was a period between the 60's and, maybe the 90's, where there were popular radio formats that built themselves around playing the longer songs, like "Stairway to Heaven" and other album cuts as well as the singles. I guess that sort of still exists via streaming or something like Sirius, but not much on old school radio...

It's cookie cutter music these days. Short and the same boring crap. Nightwish makes up for all of it. I basically listen to them and Classical...that's it.
This show was just eight eight days before the last show of the drummer Jukka, who had to quit due to insomnia. He's still with band, but in the background.
He got replaced by a friend of him Kai Hahto, known as "The Beast" and "The Human Metronom".
You might wanna check him out with his other band "Wintersun" and their song "Sons of winter and stars" (live from Sonic Pump Studios"). Incredible!

@@DANDJREACT hey guys, so you just unknowingly reacted to the most reacted to performance ever on YT from the most reacted to band and concert, this song GLS was # 13 in a 15 song headlining set, there are many vocal coach reactors with over 3Million views from a single reaction, the fan base on YT is massive,passionate and active,Floor Jansen is their 3rd,current & "Final" vocalist ,GLS is the epitome of Symphonic Metal with more of a classical influence as is many of their compositions but many from this concert are much heavier ,But this was but a very small taste of what Floor & NW has in store for you.
As someone who started listening to Nightwish and Floor with her 1st band AfterForever 20 yrs ago I suggest staying and delving deeper into this standard setting seminal concert,every song is Gold and will amaze, StoryTime,Romanticide,EverDream,Ghost River,Song of Myself to start, welcome to Symphonic Metal and to a band that is far and above at a level all their own. cheers
The reason for the short songs is radio and tv. You sell your artist to the stations and wanne fit in as many as possible and you get like 3 minutes per artists. Its like buying adds for the superbowl. You gotte fit in as many as possible and if your intro is 4 minutes long you wont sell as many. Thats why music got way shorter since the 80s with being on tv and shit. If your song is too long for a radio that plays like 5 songs and then does commercials labels wont sign you. Europe still has a lot of bands like this with long songs and amazing concerts. The european festival scene is amazing especially with rock.

If you guys have not heard of Sabaton they are also worth checking out, very different style, Floor is married to their Drummer Hannes, and her vocals sometimes feature in some of their songs. Bismark would be a good one to start off with.

Nice one guys,BUT, 2024 and you have a bad sound quality? You have to work on that.😉 You made some remarks on the music industry and you are right (3 minute songs) ,it was is always like that and not only in the USA but also in Europe. (probebly the same all over the world). I don't care to much about that,there is enough possibilities to find other music/bands,especcially in our time where internet is widely avalable and reactors channels give us lot's of new finds.
Nightwish is really special ,because of their impressive/controversial history,but,you only will understand if you "dive"into them. All members have impressive "Currículum Vitae" but especially Floor Jansen(3 singer),Tarja Turunen (1 singer) and Marko Hietala have extensif curriculums and are "stories"by themselves.
It's hard to not talk with admiration about this band,they are master musicans and people without big ego's.(well ,Tarja had some problems🤭)

Oh they do still make concerts like that 😅 follow the info Gabrielle will give. I don't want to give you too much double info. ;) Storytime is for you drummer enthousiasts a good next song. There are quite a few bands and projects from Europe that are this epics. But I am sure you will be overwhelmed with suggestions after this reaction. If you ever want to explore more band, ayreon and epica are often linked to this genre. (not similar tho)
