- Talking Europe speaks to the head of the centrist Renew group in the European Parliament, Valérie Hayer, who recently led the EU election campaign in France on behalf of President Macron’s political bloc. We dissect the all-important vote on July 18 on Ursula von der Leyen’s potential second term as EU Commission’s president, and what Renew’s expectations of her are. On the political deadlock in France, Hayer urges politicians to take a leaf out of the EU parliament’s book when it comes to building coalitions and finding compromise. Hayer is also very outspoken on what the Hungarian prime minister called his “peace mission” to Kyiv, Moscow, Beijing and Washington. Hayer says what Viktor Orban is doing is “completely unacceptable,” and that it cannot be done “in the name of Europe.”

@KB-uy3lv exactly. He is leader of a sovereign state and doesn't need approval from EU to undertake foreign policy missions. Personally, he seems to be only one in Europe that is exercising common sense for peace

You mean the president of the EU can't act in Europe's name?
Except he isn't "president of the EU". Orban is merely the prime minister of the country that's currently holding the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU. Hungary's role is to facilitate meetings of the council. Here, Orban is doing something else altogether.

Not if he acts on his own initiative and represents views which are opposed to the views of his partners. This is what Orban is doing here.

Not that I agree with what Orban has done, but what makes Hayer any different from any of the other militants in Europe?
