Not only is Al one of the greatest musicians who ever lived, this interview proves he is also a deeply patient humanitarian who can entertain an audience despite the worst interviewer I've ever suffered through
Don't think she fully comprehends this gentlemen's status as a living legend and musician's musician. Still great to see, Big Al and soak in the wisdom.
That is obvious, and it's sad. They're from 2 different worlds. We can only hope hers got a little larger that day. Avoiding bullshit media is one of the reasons he was legendary....but we have to eat so we find ourselves there, being interviewed by someone who doesn't even speak your language, right?
you probably dont care but if you're bored like me during the covid times then you can stream all the new series on InstaFlixxer. Have been watching with my gf recently =)
yeah it would've been nice if she'd done some homework beforehand or had been a fan. She rushed him too much. She'd be better as a production assistant prepping talent for late night t.v. She's clueless and I want her to just let him play.
I know it's difficult for me when someone interviews without researching history so I would imagine this was difficult for Al. At least he has the class to keep on the path.
I've always loved NRBQ, and Big Al is one of my favorite guitar players of all time. I met him once and he shook my hand, which disappeared within his large hand. Good guy, Mr.Al
I didn’t think I could be more impressed with Al Anderson and I already was. And I was wrong. He is a truly humble man and is even more than ever, an inspiration .
Big Al was kind and generous and saved this girl's ass. There could have been so much more info gleaned from an interview that was 24 minutes with someone who actually knew who they were interviewing.
I saw The Q only once...1993...it ranks as one of the greatest shows I've ever seen...I remember Big Al walking thru the crowd afterwards ,leaving the club, then crossing the street to go to Subway...hilarious.
The number of interviewers who are smart enough to interview someone of Big Al's caliber, and do them justice, you can count on one finger. Maybe... I was listening to Al back in my Connecticut days when he was in the Wildweeds, and his song "No Good to Cry" marked him as someone to watch - someone truly special. In that regard, surely nothings' changed. Bless you, Al...
I first saw Big Al Anderson when he was guitarist and vocalist with the Wildweeds when I was a teenager at the Teen Center in Enfield, CT. I later saw him with NRBQ at the Shaboo in Wllimantic, CT. I used to live in Northampton, MA and too bad I wasn't anymore when he played there. I didn't know that he had written for so many artists. So glad that I came across this interview.
It was nice to hear the interview with Big Al. I grew up in Windsor zCt. One of my best friends was Andy Lepak. My mother and Charlotte Lepak were best friends. I ended up being a full-time square dance caller for 60 years. I remember doing the Brad Davis Show a year after the Wildweeds. Cliff
Followed music w wildweeds teen center, t,ville shaboo etc etc all through the Q days and years ! Our chidren became fans ! All great musicians and a nice gentle giant of a man with a good soul ! Thanks for the post Ann !
Big Al! The Wildweeds were gods to us R&R wannabees in CT back in the day, there wasn't a garage that didn't have a band in it in the 1960's. We played High School dances, Clubs, Beach parties, etc. Although we didn't have the talent of Al and the Weeds, I remember those days so fondly. There is nothing I ever experienced like coming off the stage drenched in sweat with your fingers bleeding after a 4 hour gig. Ha Ha Ha! No Good To Cry is a superb cut, still. So, Thanks Al, all the best! A great talent, a big influence though we never met.
Al is totally charmed by her, but I also think he likes answering her questions because they are so naive. "I really like your writing! Are you making a living doing this?" Nobody who knows him would ask something like that, but her bluntness is kind of fun for Al. Thanks for posting!
Nate Dungan that’s a great way to put it, man. It’s true that she isn’t prepared & I see why the comment section is on fire. But Big Al seems down for the blunt, uninformed questions!
She may be a little dry in personality however she is pleasant on the eyes so that helps but it's Big Al so he is pretty dry and funny too, so it's all good, lol soulful dude...so effortlessly cool
Clearly this clueless interviewer did not do much research on Al. At least they gave him time to explain his career. He is a thoroughgoing pro and a "normal" person with humor and patience and a great and soulful gift. And I'm
This should be shown in every broadcast journalism class as an example of an interviewer who did not do their homework, and had no clue as to who she was interviewing. All about the BASS!?! NRQB!?! I hope Nyberg was sufficiently upbraided for this mess of an interview. I'm guessing her legs kept Al interested. Unbelievable.
Ann Nyberg was a complete embarrassment in this interview. Not a clue as to who he is. 'This guy was a world class talent, commanding the respect and admiration of virtually every A lister in the music business. Lost from the first words out of her mouth. ATTN Channel Late promotion department. Do yourselves a favor and take this down
Jack - you are so right .... they should have at least edited it better ... or do retakes. "NBRQ"? "You weren't doing a lot of originals ... yeah, we were" .... WTF? They left that in?
Al is the best hands down. Windsor Ct loves him and always will. Ann did a lousy job interviewing al but she did not do her homework. Do some research Ann!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
thanks al !!! i knew steve and as i went along avoiding the mqinstream media or lame strem media lol and wanted my songs to reflect people i really knew and stories as well and well i dod get backers who trutly loved my work and the albums are out there for 23 years but..ive been performing on the street and doing parodies but its in the moment funny and my theatre is the street
Enjoyed this video and a long time fan of Al Anderson. I saw him play in the Wildweeds in CT many years ago. I actually met him at John Tirkot Music store in West Hartford. I went upstairs to the Amp department looking for a bass amp and Tirkot had the new roll and pleated Kustom amps. The sales guy let me try one out and then Al Anderson came in and grabbed a guitar and we played together. Be nice to Ann Nyberg, she is a reporter for a Connecticut TV station interviewing lots of people and not a columnist for Rolling Stone. I thought she did a good job. Lots of people including me who like Big AL are music freaks and hypercritical of those who don't know everything about music. Still enjoyed the show
Is this for real, or is this some sort of put on? The interviewer seems to have no idea who she's talking to or why. You're support to do your homework!
I played in concert with Big Al at "Gatlin Brothers Saloon" in Sacramento at the K St. Mall there. He was playing with Carlene Carter and i was in concert with another Artist,We knew each other from NYC and Studio work he did on an album i was working on.Another Group mate of Al's, Skip Yakaitis(RIP) was in the Wildweeds with Big Al and then joined the group i was in.Big Al will always be a great guitarist/writer and singer. I met Al at his old hang out . A long time ago . Asked him what he was working on and said it was kind of country. Turned out I think it was a little bit of bad. He does not like being called Bid Al . My friend Vaughn went to the same High school . Nice guy I think he bought me a beer . Well he is not drinking lost weight it`s good for him .
This lady didn't prepare, she continually calls them "The quartet" cause she doesn't know who NRBQ is or remember their name. A prime example is here 4:45 when Al tells her why country artists in Nashville took him seriously soon after he got there her next question is asking him "But Nashville is a hotbed of alotta singer/songwriters so, how did you bust through some of that...?"
Well, I saw NRBQ at cole field house university of Maryland in 1980, no empty seats people standing, dancing, laughing and having the best time. So Not just a bar band. Interviewer should have known they were the favorite band of many of the top artists
Someone get Al an interviewer who is worthy of him? "What does that mean? What does that mean? "So give me a little rift (sic) of stuff that you played for Vince Gill..." A rift? Not a good interview, true, but I'll watch anything with Al. Does anyone know when this was shot? Is this new? The interviewer is a real-life female version of the kind of clueless characters that Fred Willard plays in the movies -- notably in "Best In Show." Knows absolutely nothing & isn't afraid to show it!
The interview is simply from the point of view from a regular person who has no idea what life is like for a real pro in the music business. And that's okay because that is the majority of listeners.
Ann did not do any homework for this interview . This was a train wreck . Al is an national treasure and she is patronizing and treats him like a child . SHE HAS NO CLUE ! She did not prepare at all . YUCK ! Ann , you should be ashamed of your self . You owe AL and apology .
Poor Al that he had to suffer through this interview. “Are you making money?” Uh yeah he just said he’s writing for a dozen different big artists. What a shame, Big Al with his guitar, if only he was asked some good questions by someone who knew just a little about him.
Ann did a Great interview to inform OTHERS of a long life of a Singer/Songwriter "On AND off the road"!!! While his Band NAMES change from the back of the Collections of Tee Shirts that I own ! Dating back to BIG AL & The Crumbs. Does AL do that for all his line ups? Does BIG AL know anyone from Connecticut that Covers his Songs? AND furthermore has BIG AL ever kept his Promise to get other Talented Musicians out of Connecticut? I heard him say this to DJ Mike Lappitino from WPLR on the air!!!! Thanks Ann
Gotta love Big Al, right from the heart! The difference between himself and typical Nashville guitarists; "I'm sloppy, funky, soulful...they're white, very white"
Interviewing a guy from NRBQ when you know zero about NRBQ. Why? A couple helpful facts for our journalist: 1. NRBQ, while sometimes referred to as a "bar band" mostly performed their own material, including great songs by Al Anderson. Writing and performing their own great songs is indeed one of the things NRBQ is known for by anyone with even a tiny familiarity with them. The term "bar band" as applied to the 'Q basically suggests a certain informality and versatility. It does not mean they were a cover band. Why would a simple cover band be revered by musicians around the world? Do cover bands tour the world? How can someone be this ignorant? And have no shame about it? 2. NRBQ did not break up when Al Anderson left the band. They replaced him and continued. They still exist today (though Terry Adams is the only guy from the original lineup). Also, the name Al is looking for is Howie Epstein. And I think Carlene fell of the wagon after the sobriety period described by Al.
No shit! A half-hour interview (which is considered an eternity for TV interview lengths), and she asks for excerpts. If she was aware of Al's greatness she would have told him we've got plenty of time and gave him a thumbs up!
Wow is that bimbette clueless. Even 30 seconds on Wikipedia could have helped a lot. No idea that NRBQ was NOT a local bar band playing covers for spare change. I couldn't watch the whole thing. This is why America is the way it is folks. Lack of education, focus on surface attributes and "professionalism", not one whit of care or funding given to the arts in any meaningful way. We are doomed.
Good grief, what an embarrassment that interviewette was! She was like Les Nessman from WKRP referring to professional golfer, Chi Chi Rodriguez as “Chy Chy Rodrigweez”. What a dolt!
Agreed with all the other comments. The interviewer can best be described as lazy - the absolute worst. At least the producer should have given her background. It doesn't take much effort to find what a national treasure Big Al is.
Painful to watch. Bordering on bad comedy/spoof interview. Where do we start? Right at the beginning -NBRQ- ,followed by stunningly clueless attempts at trying to figure out who she was talking to.She thinks he's a guy who was in a cover band at the local bar who quit and went to Nashville to hit it big.Oh,boy.
I remember listening to the Weeds practice to be the Wildweeds in 65 66 at The Lepaks house in Windsor,Ct. Followed Wildweeds all over and Was only 10 11yrs old (older cousins) took me to High School dances All over Ct. Wildweeds had hit records while Andy, their drummer, was still in high school. Put out a country album in1970 that was better than any country out now, except for Vince Gill.Just sayin!
Unfortunately, she knew nothing about him. One mention of the Wildweeds, that's it? I would of done 10 minutes on that alone including a few of the Wildweeds tunes like "No Good To Cry" and "Someday Morning" and "I'm Dreaming". The great Bass playing of Bob Dudek..Most people tuning into this would know and want to hear about the Wildweeds first, then move on to NRBQ and then all the Nashville stuff..that would of been a good order. I did radio for years and interviewed many..but I always liked Ann when I was in Connecticut.. she's great on the air..but this one fell a little short..she just didn't know the subject enough..
Not only is Al one of the greatest musicians who ever lived, this interview proves he is also a deeply patient humanitarian who can entertain an audience despite the worst interviewer I've ever suffered through

I don't know how I got here but I'm glad I did. As a songwriter myself, I learned something from this video and this man
I know it's difficult for me when someone interviews without researching history so I would imagine this was difficult for Al. At least he has the class to keep on the path.

Good comment, I was thinking the same
What a gracious guy with an out of her depth interviewer. Glad he got to tell some of his story, even gladder he got sober and saved his life.
Big Al was kind and generous and saved this girl's ass. There could have been so much more info gleaned from an interview that was 24 minutes with someone who actually knew who they were interviewing.

Always good to see a real person on the tele, rare. Big Al has created a ton of great music.
The beauty of Al helps me bear the pain of this interviewer, but it's not easy.
She really said "I really like your writing. Are you making a living doing this?"....
This woman did not prepare for this interview.
Al Anderson, Some of us appreciate your accomplishments as a great player, songwriter and singer. Interviewer has not much idea of your career eh?
I first saw Big Al Anderson when he was guitarist and vocalist with the Wildweeds when I was a teenager at the Teen Center in Enfield, CT. I later saw him with NRBQ at the Shaboo in Wllimantic, CT. "All About The BASS"... Let's go fishing Ann!
Every song he sings just keeps getting better and better. And his voice! YES!
Catch and release, baby!
Absolute train wreck, just when ya think it can't get any worse - "bass" almost gets Al laughing. Oh,boy.
Wow !!! She was JUST WOW !!! No words
Big Al Anderson, a national treasure and his former band mates in NRBQ. Just saw a video of him from 2019 on youtube and he looks fantastic!
Al Anderson a living legend and a true talent.
Big Al! The Wildweeds were gods to us R&R wannabees in CT back in the day, there wasn't a garage that didn't have a band in it in the 1960's. Too bad the NRQB lady didn't "interview" Frank Zappa. He would destroy interviewers this inept.
NO GOOD TO CRY. ONE OF THE GREATEST SONGS EVER …..
Just found this... Al's so patient... then he just slays with the Harry Connick song.
This guy is truly a great songwriter.
Clearly this clueless interviewer did not do much research on Al. At least they gave him time to explain his career. He is a thoroughgoing pro and a "normal" person with humor and patience and a great and soulful gift. And I'm

I couldn't believe her idiocy!! He has class and let it pass...
Love Big Al. Hope he finally gets all the best.

Al Anderson - such a talent! Wildweeds to NRBQ to Nashville songwriter.
She read three sentences about Al, then based the interview on it.
Big fan going back to The Wildweeds. That song had a good run down in New Orleans, too.
Al is the best hands down. Windsor Ct loves him and always will. Ann did a lousy job interviewing al but she did not do her homework. Do some research Ann!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Did she say ...You did mostly covers with the garage band??? Are you kidding me???
I saw both the Wild Weed and NRBQ in Connecticut and never heard them play a cover.
I never saw them play a cover ever!

A guy who lived down the street from me, as a kid, shared both your names.
I wish I could write 80-100 songs a year like Big Al does! And I wish this was a better interview. Did she really ask him how much he weighs?
love this interview Big Al Madelline and Mommy Show xo

Al is a class act. Her? Not so much.
This interview is painful.....she’s so uninformed, clearly has never heard a thing he’s done
She is clueless. Feel sorry for Big Al.
Why do women interviewers feel the need to reach out and try to touch the person they are interviewing. Am I the only one who notices that?
Is this for real, or is this some sort of put on? The interviewer seems to have no idea who she's talking to or why. You're support to do your homework!
