Still confused how you can make any money just starting out? Do you need to have paid subscribers or donations? Just wondering how people are making anything at all?
You have to build your free subscriber list, and then offer content that people are willing to become paying subscribers for. It doesn't happen overnight, but over time you will start to build up people who are willing to pay.
Do you think that it would be a bad strategy just to get people you know to get started with a $3 per month membership. I feel like I have a few people who would support me off the bat. And then using my Twitter like if I grow to 1k then 10k maintaining that price? Do you think asking $3 per month could scale? I would be super happy with 500-2000 subs at $3 per month.
You could - the minimum I usually see on Substack is $5 to $7 a month though. You can explore what other Substacks similar to yours charge for a monthly subscription and base it on that.

This is exactly what I want to do with my writings. I don’t want to charge for what Jesus has freely given to me. But I still also want to have an option set up if someone wants to donate.
