Hi everyone, here's my addendum to this video: 1) I was slightly inaccurate with my wording there at around 10:37 - Yamaha released a few synths build around their AN tech, not this card. The EX5 and AN1X had their own hardware designs. 2) As some of you asked for this, the MIDI controller is by Intech, it's called GRID, and it's a great open source controller that not only can send sysex data, but can be programmed in LUA (with timers and loops) so it can really add functionality to any given synth th-cam.com/video/4Xj_NJi-4mM/w-d-xo.html intech.studio/
As an owner of an An1/x, one of the few relics from my early music carewr success in thr 90s ro early 2000s i can confirm that Yamaha's VA tech still holds up and blends seamlessly with real analogue hardware. On its own it is clearly digital, but in a mix it is at leaat as convincing as any attempt Roland has made in the last 40 years
According to some research I've done, the An1x does not have a PLG-150AN in it, but the card was an attempt to replicate that synth's engine while adding a couple things (like a supersaw) anf stripping others a way (like the bitimbrality). So they share a lineage, but are not the same and moat prefer the warmer an1/x sound. The AN200 is entirely based aroind the card for its VA sounds. Are you going to get the FM card? It is apparently quite good
Yes, I was a bit inaccurate there. The EX5 had the same AN engine, but it was implemented on hardware as well, without the card. I should have said "built around the technology".
The reason folks get only 1/3 of the way through your videos is because we jump off to go get one of the gadgets you're showing us!! Seriously - your influence has opened my eyes and wallet to many things for which I'm thankful -- and my PL150-AN module has arrived and has been slotted into my Motif ES Rack. Dang it Floyd, every time I come here there's something else about which you pique my interest and now it's those darned Intech controllers. Anyway - I just came by to note my continued appreciation... ;)
The official AN Expert Editor maybe abandoned long ago but it still works perfectly on Windows 11, either standalone or as a plug-in of the Studio Manager software (or XGworks if youre into that). Editing is the most PITA with the PLG boards in general but the AN board is indeed a great sounding synth. I'd love to have the multi saw in my AN1x - but Yamaha never released an AN2x that could have done it.
Good to see the old AN card getting some love in 2024. I still have two of these cards; one piggy-backed on a SW1000XG, the other in a AN200. I also have the Drum (DR) and DX cards, also riding on a pair of SW1000XGs. The downside of my setup is the need for three old computers to host them all! They still sound good to my ears. Great for music with a late '90s vibe.
The presets are very 90s indeed. You can take it to the modern day without problems, though (needs a DAW for those studio engineering tricks everybody loves so much, though)
The dx200 was great fun too. I regret selling any of these that I had. I thought id be able to easily find some later but now they seem to be very coveted.
Sounds amazing! I love your videos on these DTMs, it's amazing what you're able to achieve with a bit of programming. That sysex controller makes a world of difference too
Love the sound of the VA synth, BUT @Floyd **much** more valuable, thanks for the pointer to Intech and their awesome open source/hardware MIDI controllers, the way those guys have done everything in such an open way is fantastic and their modular MIDI controllers look amazing! No idea how I missed them in your video about them last year!
I have an S80 which can have up to 2 of these Yamaha boards added. Back in the day (2002 or so), I added the 150 PF to add piano polyphony because I recorded SMFs and played them through the S80, accompanying with the stock piano. The S80 only has 64 voices, so playing the piano from the 150-PF removed my accompany from the 64 voices, leaving the 64 voices for the entire SMF. I don't use the S80 live anymore, but it's my main practice keyboard. Every once in a while I think about adding a second board and look at the prices. The 150 PF is still about the same when I bought it, but every other one is like doubled. Of them all, the 150 AN would be the one I'd want. Thanks for the video - it's nice to hear that it still has it, even today!
The oscillators on the AN are still some of the most flexible. FM, sync and VCO1 is actually two oscillators with multi saw and its own FM and sync. Crazy cool sounds possible without even touching the filter. Edge is like an additional low pass filter. Free EG is great too for sounds that feel alive.
I did that some 25 years ago while waiting to finally have enough money to afford such nice things (VS C++ version 6 is a contemporary decoration here) ;-)
The real-time performance controls through the MU2000 is a revelation. I have the AN200 which has this PLG-150-AN board inside. but the analog sounds are limited to monophonic unless you play the midi in from a keyboard etc.
I had an Mu128 stacked up with the Epiano one, this one and the Piano one. I also had the drum one. I kinda wished I'd not sold that now. The sounds were so great on it. The MU128 is a really great module. The PLUG 150 AN still holds it's own. Why doesn't Yammie make some plugins. Everyone else has. Bring them back
That sounds unbelievable for version 6. I'm looking for a Visual C++ 7 for mine, however. I hear it's got an extra oscillator and a bit more of a tweaky LFO. Either way, it hosts the MU2000 so nicely. :)
I guess I’m lucky to have an AN200 that contains the PLG150 inside. I bought it a few years back and thought, “that looks like a cool groove box”. Time to get it back out of the closet and play it! I made a video a while back showing how to use the editor software on Windows 10. I haven’t tried it on Windows 11 yet.
Thanks for the video - I didn't know there was a new editor for this! I used to have 2 of these at one point, but sold one. Wish I'd kept it, as then I could have had a 10 voice polyphony. Anyway - I'm glad I bought it back in 2006 or whenever it was - price was reasonable back then. BTW - I've got all the other PLG150 cards (and the the Japan only PLG100-SG which I really only got cause it was cheap, as its not really much use), but only 5 slots for them (well 6 if you count the SW100XG sound card - sadly no 64bit Windows drivers for this. Probably build a rack mount PC at some point and have a dual boot with windows XP 32bit or something.). The DX and AN cards live in my Motif ES Rack, and the MU128 hosts whatever other 3 I need, since its a lot easier to swap them out in this unit.

Overall and in a roundabout way, you're absolutely right - the result is too similar to justify spending the price currently seen on ebay/reverb. Howevvaah, the PLG card sounds ever so slightly better than AWM. Maybe I'll make a comparison video to illustrate this.
You can probably get a Yamaha AN-200, remove the PLG-150-AN from it, sell the rest of the A-200 for spares.
That used to be a thing, but not anymore. Those AN200 are pretty expensive now as well (plus they're nice and useful PLG150 frontends) ;-)
Most of the AN-200s on the market have the board long since removed. 😥 And if not, it's very expensive.
@@JeffIrok Yup, they are all sold sans plug in board now.
I'm trying to get one of these at a reasonable price and you probably just raised the price of this for a few months :(
Thanks for watching - I think you're overestimating my powers. ;-)
@@mr_floydst Hm.... there were several for sale on reverb and ebay and now there isn't ;)

I'd love to give you the correct direction, but the answer depends on the continent you're currently on ;-)
Some clever guy should reverse engineer the board and sell the project on those PCB services 😉
If that would make the prices come down, it'd be worth it. :-)
That would be nice.
