My favorite Rush song of all time (studio and live) is Freewill. Catchy song. Great instrumental guitar solo, thought provoking lyrics. Please react to Freewill from Exit Stage Left live. Thanks for this reaction.
This is The Boy's first full on instrumental piece. What's even more mind-blowing is that this is a LIVE session on a closed sound stage (band practice, so to speak. 🤯) that was filmed.
For another great instrumental try Leave That Thing Alone from the Time Machine Tour. (As a bass player myself, it's one of my favorites!)
This song was based on a series of nightmares that Alex (guitarist) had at that time.
A Masterpiece!
Which is probably why it ended the way it did. He woke up suddenly from them.
RUSH Army is present and prepared for duty.
That riff from a jazz song Powerhouse, most calmly used in Bugs Bunny cartoons, when the machines were working.☮️🇨🇦
Rush was polite enough to give the wife of the composer some money for use instead of fighting it in court.
I did not know that. Thank you kind sir for another Rush tidbit .
The Song is Based on a series of Nightmares that Alex had. The "Cadence" you Noticed, is a Common Tune that was used in Old Horror, Monster Movies, like Frankenstein.
This is Alex Lifeson’s magnum opus! This is their best instrumental. And no they don’t do a lot of them. They do however a few long intros. 2112’s overture is a great instrumental as well. 😊
That white guitar just sold for $384,000.00 lol This song changed over the years. It wouldn’t be unreasonable for you to react to a few other versions. I’m not sure which version I’d recommend from the 80s or 90s, but the one from Rush in Rio is fantastic and the one from R30 is great. They start it as a joke in a polka style then rip it. The song was so ambitious when the wrote it that they had to record it in 3 parts and then LEARN IT. Musicianship was always a priority and each of them will go down in history as one of the greatest in their fields. Geddy and Neil are widely considered the best. The only reason Alex isn’t quite there is that incredible guitarists are more common and he’s in a band with Geddy and Neil so it’s hard to stand out. He’s one of my three favorites ever.
This is a soundstage that they leased for awhile to shoot all their "official" videos during 1978/78. When they started recording at Le Studio in Morin Heights, Quebec on the Permanent Waves album and Moving Pictures all "official" videos were shot there.
This is how bands from North America got their music heard in the days before MTV over in Europe. They would make a video of the band playing the song uninterrupted. Then TV channels would have a half an hour to an hour shows playing videos.
From a fellow North Texan, I loved your reaction to a great composition from a great band. This song premiered on "Hemispheres" (1978). And yes, for me, their earlier work was their best. This particular instrumental is a complete masterpiece. And the video you're watching is their "music video" but it is really just a straight performance of the song all the way through, without an audience, but also without video edits. It shows what great musicians they truly are to perform this challenging piece so perfectly. And, finally, the "cadence" you recognized is from the Benny Goodman Band's "Sing, Sing, Sing" featuring Gene Krupa on the drums.
I think most Rush fans would list this song as their favorite instrumental... It's definitely mine, but all of their instrumentals are amazing. If you want to check out some of their newer music, Headlong Flight is a great song. Live in Cleveland or just the album version. 😁 great reaction
@LV_Gelfling I can't call it my favorite instrumental by the boys - 'cause I really can't say which of their instrumentals I like best - It varies with my mood at the moment. But it's up there in the running!
3 guys. 1 Neil best drummer. Alex crazy guitarist. Geddy Lee. Sings. Plays keyboard and the bass Can't find to many 3 pc that are so fluid..Nuff Said
Hey, my Friend, this was Rush in Montreal, Quebec, Canada,1981!😁
Always amazing to watch Alex and Geddy play guitar and foot pedals simultaneously :D
Geddy uses keyboard pedals for this song. I don't think Alex did until much later. Alex just used guitar pedals and I would imagine Geddy did too. Or I may be wrong.
Amazing only 3 guys doing this
Yes , RUSH did a few instrumentals in the early days of 43 years as a 3-person group.seen them live in 1988(Power Windows TOUR)
Alex's guitar is the vocalist in this song.
Dude Rush is worth going down the rabbit hole for sure. Best live band of all time in my opinion. 2112 is my favorite song. It has it all .
This is my favorite instrumental by Rush. My very favorite album happens to be where this song came from, "Hemispheres". Thanks for reacting to this song. Loved it.
Saw Them Live 3 times. Totally incredible. Love everything they did!!! YYZ and Lavia Stangiato, are both my FAVES!!!
Great reaction , Try Natural Science studio version get ready to go on a journey, For another live try working Man Live in Cleveland, See how three guys in their 50s end a three hour concert fire 🔥 fire 🔥 This song goes in three translations from mid tempo to fire 🔥
"instrumentation to the utmost respect" you nailed that :) gods of progressive rock they are! this is my favorite instrumental but there is several incredible gems in their catalog
At 12 I first heard and. Blew my mind I'm 60 years old no band compares
Thanks! I never get tired of hearing this.
This was the music video for this, produced in 1978. It's live, but just on a soundstage somewhere. No crowd or perhaps at a rehearsal for the tour.
So true brother they are the masters of the transitions. They do take you on a journey with their lyrics and in this case with their music.
On the album it has a comment after the title " A exercise in self indulgence". Check out Marathon incredible bass line behind the vocals.
You pronounced it perfectly, it means the strange village or something similar ✌️
Yes sir YYZ & La Villa Strangiato are both instrumentals. My favorite 2 instrumentals ever by the way.
This song is supposedly based on a nightmare that Alex lifeson had put to music by Neil
It's so Cool, how the Simple Effect of Putting Vaseline around the outside edges of the Camera Lenses can Create such a Dreamy Visual!!!
Hands down my favorite RUSH song. Been a fan since I was a kid. Lost count the number of times I've seen them live (even once overseas) but anyone that reacts to real music i gotta sub. A bit later in their career - Ghost of A Chance (live version) - lyrically and musically they guys are the goat in my little corner of the world. Thanks for the upload.
Peart was big into jazz drumming techniques, very professional.
Absolutely love following your Rush journey!!! Cheers!
The song you "hear" in this is indeed "Powerhouse" which is a jazz big band piece played in many Looney Tunes cartoons
Yes, that was a young Neil Peart. Rush did a number of instrumentals but this one is my favourite. It is a masterpiece based on Alex's nightmares. This video was shot live without an audience. This is before music videos became popular. That one piece was from old Bugs Bunny cartoons. Other Rush instrumentals
Limbo
Where's my thing
Leave that thing alone
Maglingant Narcissism
The main monkey business
Hope
Cheers
If you like the earlier music of Rush you can't be wrong because it's your oppinion and I'm right there with you. This was a great reaction. Nice job sir.
This song still haunts my dreams.
This was from the 1978 Hemispheres tour
Hi Fabian, thanks for the video, You can also get to know Rush the same as the rest of us, Music is never too late. cheers bud.
So far ahead of their time. The atmosphere and vibe they create...just so deep and unique.
There's a story behind that riff you were questioning. Long story short, that riff was nicked from a writer that scored that for a 1030's something movie. They later sent a check to the deceased writers estate. (It wasn't necessary, but that's the kind of guys they are).
Alex Lifeson is so underated
This was a "studio live" recording. Prior to this, they did the common practice of lip-syncing to the studio recording. With this album, they re-recorded this in the studio as if they were performing in front of an audience. This was their first instrumental, by the way. They had instrumental passages in songs, but had never recorded a pure instrumental. This was the first, and it was always a treat when another one would show up on an album ("YYZ", "Leave that Thing Alone", "The Main Monkey Business", etc.).
As I watch these things I feel like I want to chime in as I experience it. It takes me down memory lane. Pardon me. Rush pursued their creative spirit at this time with no regard to financial reward. Isn't that the heart of a lover of music?
Rush is a very underrated band, I've been listening them since the late 70's. Enjoying every minute.
This song is one of their gems.
Check out their album, 2112.
I was about 16 when I first heard this. We’d all be sitting in someone’s basement drinking Miller Pony beers and smoking something. My youth was somewhat like That 70’s Show. A friend’s band attempted to play this. We thought it was good…..I’m sure it wasn’t but we didn’t care. Best time ever.
Highly recommend "Entre Nous" live version on the Snakes and Arrow DVD. Long time Rush fan.
@8:25 - Yep, it's a fairly common thing for Rush, as you'll come to realize if you keep on scurrying down this little bunny-burrow :) @11:50 The song it reminds you of (and the riff is openly lifted from, as stated in the liner notes) is titled "Powerhouse", written by Raymond Scott, purchased outright by Warner Brothers studios way back when, and used in more Warner Brothers/Looney Tunes/Merry Melodies flicks than I can even begin to try counting. Has to be in the dozens, if not hundreds.
Watch their feet. Alex and Getty play pedal key boards too.
Leave that Thing Alone, is my fav instrumental. actually a tie with Malignant Narcissism.
This is their best instrumental imo followed by YYZ. Other popular instrumentals are Leave that thing alone, The main monkey business and Where's my thing.
I have to agree with you on the early years my favs 2112 and Caress of Steel!
FYI a piece of music without vocals is called an instrumental. When you think about it, apart from opera all classical music is instrumental. The word solo means one, so you can't have a solo with more than one person playing and a band playing without vocals is not a solo.
This is the best version of the best rock instrumental of all time
They have more
But this is the standard
Favorite Rush song is about a old sports car, and a ****you attitude, in an era of internal combustion era prohibition - Red Barchetta. Not the most people's favorites but it is mine. Xanadu is darned near an instrumental-only but there are SOME lyrics.
Lavilla strangiato 1978 good work bro. Rush is as good as they get 😌 👌 🙌 💯 🙏 keep rushing
If you have around 20 minutes, I think you'll like "2112". I like the cartoon video because it has all of the words (including the parts that aren't sung). That really takes you on a journey! I think you'll also like "Working Man" - live in Cleveland. Natural Science, Vital Signs, Red Sector, Sprit of the Radio are killer too. There are sooo many to suggest!
If you ever wonder what decade the video is... when Alex & Neil's hair is long & Neil has the moustache....it's the 70s. When they have short hair, it's the 80s and after that.
You know I was looking at your playlist and I realized something you haven't done Freewill yet! That is one of the Rush Staples you still haven't heard yet! I would love to get your take on that one.
"Big Money" is one of my Many favorites.(Reg.Song)
La Villa Strangiato is my fave instrumental from RUSH.
You just did my fave but you missed a few for sure! Try Leave That Thing Alone and Dude, Where's My Car? for instrumentals.
In 2012 Rush released the Clockwork Angels album, with an 8 piece acoustic string ensemble for fill. The last song, The Garden, was said to have gotten them into the HOF, it certainly is worthy as a song about life.
Just wondering if you've heard King Crimson, Yes, or Quicksilver Messenger Service... the hits and mind-blowers, not the dogs?
So much timbre going on for 3 dudes, and these cats wrote for themselves first, they had to play these songs so they wanted to love them, hopefully the fans would be along for the ride, pick up new fans along the way; and Rush have no B-sides, no demos, no unreleased studio tracks, if a song idea wasn't working out, they'd drop it and forge ahead, maybe take a riff or idea from dropped tracks.
Great reaction!! I'm so glad you got to check this out. It's definitely my favorite instrumental...and it's been said, that this is their most difficult song to play. Other instrumentals are YYZ(which you've heard), Where's My Thing, Leave That Thing Alone and Malignant Narcissism(which i think is amazing). Look those up, there are live performances....all are amazing. See what you think...
Wow Calvin , you gave some solid suggestions…
Thank you Fabian...I love to see new people, discover Rush. Tool is another great band, that I think you'll like.
I'm not sure where they recorded this music video, but they played it live (probably in a rehearsal space, maybe at a sound check before a show) so the actual recording is different from the album version or from later versions released on the live albums.
Xanadu is my favorite live performance.
My favorite Rush song is “A farwell to kings”. This is their best instrumental though!
Ok, I did see them in your neck of the woods. I'm guessing 84 in Houston. Day of Rock n Roll.
Alex has a nice 12 string acoustic solo only 2 min or so - called "Hope" that is very beautiful.
This one is my favorite instrumental of theirs. (Especially the version from Rio because we get Alex's improvised rant.) But yes, they have 8 instrumental pieces in total. In the 70's it was common for rock bands to put an instrumental on an album, so everyone can have a time to shine.
Favorite vocal song is "Subdivisions".
Rush were amazing instrumentalists and sometimes they just liked to spread their wings and challenge themselves to things other bands would never do. But I wouldn't call it common. There are a number of instrumental recordings such as this one, YYZ, Where's My Thing, Leave That Thing Alone, and The Main Monkey Business. But they have 40 years of amazing music most of it has lyrics. The music piece you mentioned that you recognized was "Powerhouse" by Raymond Scott. It was used in WB cartoons. Interesting point about that piece, Rush didn't give credit to Scott and by the time his management notified them of the infringement, the statute of limitations had expired on the challenge. But Rush's management, out of deference to Mr. and Mrs. Scott (Raymond was still alive at that point), and being the class act that they are, offered a one-time "penance" payment, feeling it was the ethical thing to do.
With this particular song they purposefully wrote something that would be incredibly difficult to play. The subtitle of it is An Exerecise In Self-Indulgence.
This is my favorite instrumental, but 2112 is my favorite overall
I think there is a general consensus about the Rush highlights. "By-tor and the Snowdog" and "The Necromancer" from their early period, showcases some of the hardest, most blistering lead guitar work from Alex. Their influence upon the fast aggressive metal that came later can be heard on those tunes, as well as their classic staple, 'Working Man'.
There are many more epics waiting for you when you are ready, Lol...
This video is Rush in their prime. If you haven't done it yet," Cygnus X-1 " , book1 and 2.They are a piece. My favorite.
For a mind blowing love performance I suggest Santana at Woodstock playing Soul Sacrifice
Love lol
perfection
Check out Headlong Flight. It's from their last album. All their music is just amazing.
They didnt do that many instrumentals. In 40 years they put out like 20 studio albums but only maybe 5 instrumentals i think? It was something they did a few times but they really were a song band with geddy singing.
Welcome to the world of real music. 😉
It looks like you haven't done Red Barchetta - that is another classic. You pronounced it right...
The best band there has ever been !!!
A other great Canadian band is, Motion Device. A all family band from Ontario Canada.
It was Recorded in a Theatre with No Audience.
YYZ is my favorite but you need to check out some of the other ones like malignant narcissism (do it live) or leave that thing alone, the main monkey Business, limbo, or where's my thing
1) I'm sure not going to criticize your pronunciation!
2) From what I understand ( Your Mileage May Vary), this piece was based on nightmares that Alex Lifeson experienced.
3) This was one of the songs that led me to ask, "Are you SURE that this is just three people?"
4) Others will have pointed out the the similarity to "Powerhouse," and the band's donation to the composer's family instead of fighting it out in court.
I like the older stuff better too. The one exception being the Snakes and Arrows album that was released in 2007. Though La Villa Strangiato will always be my favorite instrumental, Main Monkey Business from that album is also very good (more fun, less heavy). Please check it out; very few reactors do: th-cam.com/video/mGf9JcSXvCc/w-d-xo.html
Might find instrumentals on Hemispheres album
He played with Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton.
You should listen to 2112 starting with the discovery
Not a pure instrumental, but Headlong Flight will let you experience the full Rush experience.
Just three guys make all this sound
Stand alone, Where's My Thing, Malignant Narcissism, Limbo
Sorry, one more comment, "Hemispheres",is my favorite.
If you get a couple of hours. 2112.From beginning to end.
Try listening to Jean-Luc Ponty song.
Mirage.
Tom Sawyer says hello
HIS NAME IS ALEX LIFESON
Xanadu live in 1981.
Rush stole the melody from Raymond Scott who wrote the song Powerhouse back in the 30’s..
Rush however paid the family to settle any disagreements….
Listen to Xanadu from either 2112 or EXIT STAGE LEFT.
