I use to get stares like that a lot when I was driving! I had a 1998 Dodge Caravan loaded with drive by wire hand controls. I was told the undercarriage WAS undercoated really well and would last forever but it wasn’t and the salty roads, nearly ten years later the floor fell out! Much respect!
I’m a C6-7 Quad. How is it that you’re able to balance so well while driving?? Especially when braking? I flop forward when braking, so I have to have a chest belt. It’s time for me to get a new vehicle soon. Right now I have a ‘98 Ford E-150 and through taking extra care of it, it’s lasted this long but the New England winters and other weather, wear and tear, etc are quickly catching up with it. I’m also interested in what vehicle you have and if you’d recommend it. Does it bottom out a lot? How much ground clearance does it have? In my van, I have zero-effort braking and zero-effort steering. Do you? I’m not trying to be nosy. I hope you don’t think I am! But another quad, with relatively similar function, from what I can see, would be incredibly helpful and useful!! Especially since I have to pay for the entire conversion! When I got my van, I was five years post injury and was able to work full time, so a division of Social Services paid for my conversion. But, a few years after I got my van, I got Lyme Disease and it went undiagnosed for far too long and I never fully recovered from it as a result of having it so long. It really killed my ability to work as it really compromised my already weakened immune system, so I get sick often and seriously. But back to talking about vehicle conversions, just the zero-effort steering and braking will cost at least $20,000! The entire conversion is estimated to cost 4 or5 times that! And that’s not even considering the cost of the vehicle itself! I’m so loping to avoid having to get a minivan! I’d love to get a SUV or an Explorer, if I can cut some costs on the conversion. Could we talk? Thank you!
Hey Lynn I'm going to try answering everything but email me at shawn@livetoroll.org or message me on Instagram if you have more questions.. When I'm driving I kind of use my arms to keep me more supported by having my elbows in the arm rests and pushing myself up a little. I also have core spacticity which is like a constant tone that keeps my core tight most of the time and it's actually is hard to bend sometimes. I do like having a van because you can get out of the elements to transfer but with the ramp conversion and everything it does bottom out on large speed bump or leaving parking lots with a steep slope in and out.. I have to drive it like it's a lowered car for stuff like that. I don't have any additional braking assistance just standard power brakes. I have sensitized steering but mine is only 50% assist not zero which does help because I drove my first few years with just standard power steering it was a lot of work on my shoulder and it kind of wore out my shoulder a little bit after a couple years so I switched to the 50% assist. It was definitely not easy driving at first and I could only drive short distances for a while. It took some time to build up my strength to the point where I could get out and drive and go wherever I needed to go.
Donnie Kelber I can try to make a video of my wallet set up for you just give me a few weeks because I have a lot of video to edit right now. When I drive I leave my wallet on the passenger seat and I keep my phone right on my lap.
This is going to be an dumb question how exactly does the accelerator/brake pedal conversion work? I can see a left hand control but is it done thru mechanical or electrical means?
The controls are actually all mechanical.. the hand controls are directly hooked up to the pedals below.. When you push the handle down it accelerates and pushing it forward hits the brakes. I'll be working on a video showing that soon too..
Live To Roll That'll definitely be a good vid. Will any shop install the system or just shops specializing in modifying vehicles for handicapped persons?
I'm not %100 sure on that.. I think anyone could install them but if you have a mobility specialist near you I would give them a call. If not though I think you will be ok with anybody that is handy... They probably come with installation instructions and they pretty much just bolt on.
im nt paralized but i do have a sci that makes me have no movement in my spine. This makes it hard to reach the gas hatch to open the tank do you know if they make anything that i can press n h steering wheel to ooen the tank
The steering control is called a "Tri-pin" They sell them at many medical supply places but here is one I use a lot: www.sportaid.com/sure-grip-tri-pin-spinner-knobs.html The gas and brake are controlled by a MPS systems (mine is right hand drive) mps-handcontrols.com
First.. im.pleased to see ya driving. I am a c4 incomplete driving. You do understand ... you violate laws taping people without their consent ??? Why need to say aha... The stare comment. ? You illegally taped their body and faces . We paralyzed shouldn't seek to be seen to make good examples. Certainly any of us can do this . I wouldn't appreciate someone taping me at my job ... if you stayed off their image ..ya focus on the ability. You showed unsafe driving ...it takes just a second to harm you send others.. The leaving crap on your lap is not something safe to do. If someone shorter has to be closer to the wheel...you just showed them how to get hurt. Not to mention fat in the way.. a vent etc. I don't dare try to pull off with obstruction. I am 5 ft ..small ..but .. my license could be yanked if Cited ...accidents like hitting that business ..happen. I urge you to consider safer video's that don't show entitlements .. we don't get to break laws on video capturing. Therapy places in california ..nevada ...etc...have laws on taping others as well. Same laws in case you need to inquire. I think you should know ..spine fb sites posted you as a c6. No other references. C4 ..I don't use your features ... I chose not to have a turn out seat .. so i am forced to do a transfer without risk of the seat . Sit to stand ..pivot ..use head rests ..arm rests ... Use memory seat features ... driver 1 pulls you to the wheel... 2 takes you back to the wheelchair hopefully locked on the floor & between the front seats. I scoop my legs over as well. I use a left foot accelerator, tri pin .. and my gear on shift arm on the column is safer than yours .. plus I couldn't move your type. Curious who set your adaptive stuff up ? Did someone take you through the adaptive driving lessons and did you get a new license with adaptive endorcements so you are not cited or not covered by insurance for driving without endorsements ? I don't have left hand use .. I do have a voice system with a annoying blue button my elbow hits .. The rotation process is unsafe.. a waste of money. are you a complete or incomplete ? I'm suggesting you give a bit of info ...As you can tell .. we all have different needs . Your audience could benefit from details vs capture of employees . Don't take offense. We both are fortunate to drive ..and afford these expensive vans. We can encourage others with knowledge and safety. Btw.. I tried the drive up ...Burned the he'll out of my legs when I thought I could hold onto a drink just to get beyond the window. I don't do drinks or drive off before I am ready to do nothing but drive adaptively. :)
No one really understands the little victories more than we do. FIST 👊 BUMP

We're you having back pain or soreness and do you get sore from the back of your wheel chair rubbing at your back
+terran Alexander I do get soreness and discomfort in my back when I'm sitting in one place for too long but if I stay moving I'm usually ok.

Hey did they modified the wheel?
+Ramses Mell No the wheel isn't modified but I have a standard Tri Pin attached to it so I can handle it on my own.
+Live To Roll alright then, I have to learn more about how you do that, I'm c5 incomplete I'm starting to drive. Where are you living?
Can anyone please help me with the name of the steering control and where to find it? I TIA
