Brendan may not be important to anime-onlys, but for dedicated readers of Pokemon Adventures/Pokemon Special manga, he's a fan-favorite. While he goes by a different name in that version (He's called Ruby), he's essentially supposed to be the same character. Plus, his relationship with Sapphire (The manga's version of May), is very well developed.
The only characters to have a cannon ship and a really well written storyline. Also turns Norman from semi-negligent father to more intimidating Komi-San's Dad.
Flannery’s design is so freaking good in ORAS. She looks like a volcano in human form. The jeans colors indicating the peaceful areas near the base of the volcano with plant life and hot spring spots. Then as you go up the volcano the more pumice and ash, thus the black vest. And finally the hair looking like an eruption of lava, which can also tip the observer off to her having an active personality as opposed to a more dormant one. That’s how I see it.
Her dialogue before and after her battle also reflects this. All this pent up stress from being a brand new gym leader, the responsibility to oversee it after her grandfather's presumed successful management of the gym. Only through her battle with you is she able to release that pent up emotion and after her defeat is she mellowed out and more calm and composed. Absolutely love Flannery.

Flannery doesn't seem to go up to the volcano. She's focused more on maintaining the hot springs and gym. When I saw May, my first thought was Why does she have the legs of a full-grown man. It was the first thing my eyes locked on to and her legs were so much bigger than the upper half of her body.
A lot of the unusual footwear choices were actually water shoes or something along the lines of Crocs, the region is a tropical (or semi-tropical?) island, half the map is water. Similarly, Brendan and May's outfits weren't really regular biking clothes, they were like the quick drying bathing suit/wetsuit that people use in triathlons.
Yeah the whole “the protags are 10 years old” thing is a misconception because of ash being 10. Id say the average age is 12-13. If anything chase and elaine(the lets go protagonists) look like 10 year olds. Anyways May was my childhood crush. She’s so pretty and cute
In my opinion the thing that held back the art of the first 3 gens is: 1 mostly static posing, 2 rather undefined faces, 3 watercolor palette. Starting with Sinnoh the official art just got so much crisper and exhibited more dynamic postures/angles, it let the designs pop more.
Fun Fact about Brendan: In the manga, under that hat, he has a nasty scar on his forehead into his hair when he nearly died saving a girl from a wild Salamence before he had any Pokemon
I think they should bring back the old Shelly and Courtney and have them be separate characters from the new ones so they can both coexist and either name the old or new Shelly "Isabel" or "Amber" and name the old or new Courtney "Blaise" so they could make the SSS Trio and the Three Fires respectively and we get the best of both worlds also it would make it easier for artists to ship them if they are two different entities but are working together at the same time instead of replacements like in the manga
Are you aware of Pokémon Masters EX? It has the ORAS designs (and some original ones) in full 3D. And it lets you see them in multiple poses and rotate them.

Fun fact: in the manga, Winona and Wallace were in a relationship together. They broke up at some point prior to the events in the manga and both act as mentors for Sapphire and Ruby respectively. I don't recall the specifics of it, but I believe it was from their inability to reconcile some differences, similar to what Ruby and Sapphire were going through and what they'd overcome to become Pokemon Adventures's power couple.
Her talking about Tate and Liza including the updated designs talking about giving twins/couple similar designs but with a distinguishing characteristic between them. My mind went to FF14 and the Levillueur (spelling?) twins.
FWI, not every Pokemon protagonist is 10. Serena and Calem for example are both stated to be older then Emma in the NA version of X/Y, whose officially 16 years old. Selene and Ellio are around 11 in Pokemon Sun/Moon/Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon, and Red in the Pokemon Blue manual is confirmed to 11 years old when he first sets off on his Pokemon Journey. The Pokemon Legends Arceus protags (Who might be Dawn/Lucas sent back in time) are around 15 years old. Brendan and May are both 12 in Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald/Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire. Also, it was confirmed in an interview that Hilbert and Cheren were the same age as one another, I.E: 14-15 years old in Pokemon Black and White. TLDR, it's a case-by-case basis.
Oh, and Wes, the main character of Pokemon Colosseum, is 17 years old. Currently the oldest playable MC from a Pokemon game that is an actual Pokemon Trainer.
44;10 So I'm not 100% sure, but I'm pretty sure her hair drill is her bangs, as the spiral appears to wrap around her head up to the forehead. It could go past that, but imagining someone having waist/thigh length bangs with shorter hair everywhere else is an amusing sight.
there is a good reason why the footwear seems so odd in oras. considering that in some county wet socks was considered a torture method. and oras is about 70%? water.
I don’t design human characters often, but I’m finally realizing that whenever I do, they ALWAYS have the dumbest footwear and I now recognize it’s because I grew up with OR/AS.
With May's hairstyle, I think a more realistic interpretation would be Manon's hair from Street Fighter 6. I've seen a couple of characters in a couple of different manga with that hairstyle, too, and one of them started with hair that was long all the way around except for the bangs, but then she cut all of it short except for the parts framing the face. That might help to figure out what's going on with her.
p.s. brandon/ruby played such a major role back in the manga, and god damn was the manga unhinged. shit went down hard, and so many deaths (kind of)...

Her talking about Tate and Liza including the updated designs talking about giving twins/couple similar designs but with a distinguishing characteristic between them. My mind went to FF14 and the Levillueur (spelling?) twins.
I think Roxanne’s skirt looks more like a castle parapet than a gear.
Gen 3 and gen 6 and the gen 3 remakes had the best designs
Lilly, Anabel doesnt reappear in ORAS but she does appear in SM though her role changed
28:32 yes… fight…
I'm surprised that the brief Annabelle segment didn't summon Vergolophus directly into your home
They definitely cooked hard with the team aqua and magma designs for ORAS and i had the same vibe seeing how they revamped Shelly
"no one cares about brandon"
Real fans know *Ruby* from the magna and dude is based as fuck
Nice! Hoping to see what your thoughts will be on Masters EX designs or stuff from Gen 6, Hex Maniac is my favorite. :)
44;10 So I'm not 100% sure, but I'm pretty sure her hair drill is her bangs, as the spiral appears to wrap around her head up to the forehead. It could go past that, but imagining someone having waist/thigh length bangs with shorter hair everywhere else is an amusing sight.
there is a good reason why the footwear seems so odd in oras.
considering that in some county wet socks was considered a torture method.
and oras is about 70%? water.
Didn't know you have a youtube channel like 1week ago, love your video! (Ana art to XD )
I don’t design human characters often, but I’m finally realizing that whenever I do, they ALWAYS have the dumbest footwear and I now recognize it’s because I grew up with OR/AS.
I LOVE ZINNIA!
I’m pretty sure the reason why so many of the Hoenn characters wear sandals is because Hoenn is supposed to have a tropical climate.
the thing with norman is that is a man of discipline that wants to prove that normal pokemon and techniques are best when you tarin seriously
I'm excited. Gen 3 is one of my baby gens.
That might help to figure out what's going on with her.
oras Shelly, zinnia and phoebe are life. Such good designs
I love that flash of Steven Steel, perfect
p.s. brandon/ruby played such a major role back in the manga, and god damn was the manga unhinged. shit went down hard, and so many deaths (kind of)...
I like videos reviewing Trainer designs. Hope to see more. Were there Gen 1 and 2 reviews before this?
I found very funny how the Enemy Team's Leaders on Spanish have this Menacing names:
Magno and Aquiles but then on English they have like Timmy's name like so normal Maxie and Archie XD
The ORAS design is pretty good, but I predicted you would go mad looking at the footwear xD
big fan of the frantic sapphic triangle ringing
42:32
I'm glad you recognize the greatness of my wife
1:14 JoJo mention let's gooooo!!

20:33 SHE’S A TWIN?!?!
