  • In this video I revisit and evaluate the silica gel 9mm and also the 6mm smoking filter of the German company Denicotea. I contacted Denicotea to ask about the heat resistance of their plastic cap and about using their filters for pipe smoking….their reply is in this video too 😉

      Thank you my’ol Fred 😊👍👍 The story of the rise and fall of these silica gel unusual filters for pipe smoking was interesting…but…at twice the price of active charcoal filters and their poor water absorption means they need a redesign…to have a chance to compete with active charcoal filters 😉💨💨💨

    Hi Lester, my friend. Interesting that you bring up the filters from “Denicotea”. About 7 years ago I discovered them by chance and tried it out too. The tobacconist where I found and bought them told me back then that although they fit into the 9mm filter pipes, they were not necessarily suitable for pipes, because these filters were actually made for cigar and cigarette mouthpieces.
    My conclusion: He was right. Although I use the "Denicool" silica crystals regularly and value them, they do not work well in this plastic case. Just like yours, a lot of water condensation formed on mine too. With an absorbent paper cover like all other known filters, it would definitely be much better and super interesting.
    Kind regards, Patrick

      So…we agree…totally..my dear Patrick 😊👍👍 Thats the reason that Denicotea retreated from pipes in recent years. Their filters are twice the price of active charcoal filters and as you said…their water vapor adsorbency is poor compaired to active carbon filters with their paper layers. I’ll use the rest of those Denicotea 9mm filters for very dry blends with subtle flavors maybe 😄😊😉💨💨💨

      @@RedcoatsReturn i haven't smoked it that much yet so I can't offer an in depth view. So far it works fine. There is a metal cooling device inside which works very well; it also keeps the filter away from the heat, so no scorching of the plastic. Smoke seems to be super dry, you can also put the L filter into the mouthpiece which is longer and holds more silica. Due to its construction the pipe needs more cleening effort that modern 9mm pipes. The briar quality seems to vary a lot and mouthpieces were made of vulcanit which often is heavy oxidiced by now. If you buy one, check that the metal cooler hasn't been lost!

    Hi Lester - really interesting and we're lucky to have your expertise in this area. I also use a variety of filtering methods from no filters at all (my best and most expensive briar pipes), balsa filters in Savinelli's and 9mm in my meerschaum pipes and German made pipes. Hi Lester, great video; very informative, as always! I’ve had a difficult time finding filtered pipes in Canada, but surprisingly it’s quite easy to get a hold of the filters themselves, haha. My local tobacconist carries 9mm Chacom filters, but no 9mm pipes. I digress… when I lived in Florence, Italy, in 2013/14 I bought a second Sbardella Savinelli, and it was unfiltered. I was still new to the pipe hobby, so I asked for filters, and they gave me a box of Denicotea 3mm paper filters, to fit in my non-filtered tenon. To be fair, they are just bits of rolled-up paper; but they helped! I haven’t been able to find them anywhere else, so I’ve held on to them and I ration them. Anyways, thanks again for the great video. All best, my friend :)

    Greetings Lester. Another good dive into the world of pipe filters. I always use charcoal filters but last week I had a bowl in a Brebbia 7069 Hourglass Dublin and forgot to put in a filter. It was still a pleasant smoke. I knew something was different but not in a harsh way. No tongue bite. I wondered if the smoke had a chance to cool off a bit in the void that usually is filled with the filter.

    • @RedcoatsReturn
      @RedcoatsReturn  ปีที่แล้ว

      That could be my’ol mate 😊👍👍 A cooling chamber is designed a number pipes over the years…The Peterson System and their Pub Pipe model are examples. I think it depends on the tobacco…how much work the filter does…to remove harshness, tar &nicotine, water vapor and reduce tongue bite. Top quality tobaccos are easy to smoke without a filter…a long stem or a long shank helps to cool the smoke too 😊😉💨💨💨

    Hello Lester,
    Filter are a very interesting topic to discuss and to examine.
    I never saw this plastic filter with silica from Denicotea. I'm using the Denicool crystals on the bottom of my corncobs to prevent them from burning and to give me a more dry and clean smoking. They are brown after smoking and I was never sure, if they get brown by the heat or the nicotine. Now I know, it's the second one. But is there an issue for health, if they get burned by the tobacco like sometimes in my Corncob?
    Erwin from channel Erson did some analyzis of different Filters, also different Brands. He forwarded me his remaining stock, that I can do my own experiences. Exciting to see, that there is more....
    Thank you for this video.

The silicagel filters are ok for dry blends and the active charcoal filters with the paper layered cartridges are better for absorbing water vapor. • @larshermanns

    Good Morning,
    Denicotea is a pipe I don't like at all.
    My beloved Stanwell (now BLITZ) filters fit perfectly. Thicker filters most of all stick in the filter chambers and cannot be removed after smoking, Peterson's filters is one of those.
    Best filters at that time are being made by Stanwell (rest in stock, no longer being made), BLITZ and GIZEH (same as BLITZ). Carbon filters are best. VAUEN can be used as well but they have more carbon and therewith a harder draw.
    I'm not sure whether or not Denicotea will continue making their filters. BLITZ can be thrown onto the compost heap. But what about silica gel?
    Except of the pipe cleaners, everything is ending up on our compost heap. The filter paper needs just a couple of days until it's decomposed, the ceramic caps and the carbon / active coal will loosen up our Garden soil whilst the tobacco ashes are a great fertilizer.
    Denicotea is Latin. 😉 So, pronounce it like de-ni-co-tea (ea to be used as in "rhea").
    Thank you very much for your investigation. 😊

      @larshermanns ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Blake,
      you can do whatever you like. At the end it's just a matter of expected results.
      Activate coal filters (carbon filters) actually reduce nicotine, tar and moisture for a dry and "healthier" smoke (at least not as harmful as smoking unfiltered).
      Meerschaum does the same.
      Paper filters as well as Savinelli Balsa Wood just reduce moisture.
      So, you just need to think about your purpose of using filters. If it's just the reduction of moisture, it doesn't matter which filters you're using. If it's for health reasons, carbon filters are best.

      Hello Mark,
      I'm using active char coal filters fir 32 years already. Most of my pipes have 9mm filter chambers in the stem or shank (Meerschaum pipes), others have 6mm chambers. Just a fistful of my pipes has no filter chambers (very old pipes and some Meerschaum pipes).
      You need a filter for each smoke, after smoking you can see, smell and feel how much moisture and dust is ending up in the filters.
      Of course, you will have to learn how to smoke cool and carefully with the harder draw, but this probably will take just a couple of weeks.
      Throughout these three decades, I've tried almost all filters offered on the German market - except of Denicotea (no plastic filters for my pipes!) and Savinelli Balsa Wood Filters.
      Best are 9mm filters from BLITZ and GIZEH (actually both are the same as my previous Stanwell filters). VAUEN filters as well as Peterson's filters have more coal and therewith need a harder draw, additionally Peterson's filters are often too thick.
      Best 6mm filters are White Elephant Meerschaum filters which I'm using in my corn Cobs.
      About BLITZ and GIZEH I've made two videos - the only videos *without* English subtitles. I didn't expect that people from outside the German speaking market could be interested in pipe filters. 🤔

    I usually use white elephant activated charcoal as a rule as I am now smoking the kohlase and Kopp pipe 66 in yet another Harcastle that I added to my collection as they really are value for money and I find them a good pipe to smoke. I got a Camden 9mm filter smooth apple 101 and not only a good looking pipe but smokes very well. So the Kohlase and Kopp pipe 66 I said I’d let you know what I thought of it and I really do like it and it’s not overly sweet which I’m happy about but just enough and the balance is spot on. It’s not an overly strong tobacco and burns very well but may want a pot full pinching out to dry for an hour before you load up as it is on the moist side. There’s a mild fruitiness to it’s flavour but again it’s not overpowering that wants me to put the pipe down and have a break, it’s the opposite I’m enjoying every moment the pipe is lit. The room note must be really good as my neighbour mentioned how lovely it was and she’s a none smoker so that must be a plus eh. Oh and the tin well that’s another bonus and addition to my pipe art and a big plus it’s not covered in awful stickers which ruin the tin when you try and remove them, there is just one on the base which peels off really easily so your left with the tin how it should be. It gets a 9/10 from me and one I can definitely recommend.

      Thats sounds a star blend of K&K 😲😄😋 I’ll look around if I can get that blend….a great review Jonathan my friend…well done 😊👍👍 K&K is rumored to buy the Dan Tobacco blends…that would add many legendary blends to their portfolio and rescue them for the future years. I hope the rumor is true…like Peterson and STG rescued Dunhill blends 😊😉💨💨💨

    Very informative and interesting Lester..as always. I have tried Denicotea 6mm but gave up on them …I find them too tight a draw. I haven’t tried the 9mm offering. Mostly I use Blitz & find they filter moisture effectively and the yellow colour change tells me that they’re taking out other ‘nasties’.
    Thanks for your research…I hope the weather improves for you…have a good weekend.

      I totally agree with your findings John😊👍👍. Active charcoal paper cartridges reign supreme in 9mm…half the cost if Denicotea 9mm plastic tubes and active charcoal filters are much better absorbing the water vapor too 😉💨💨💨

    Agree, I watch YT to get a rough draft and then try it myself. Glad I don't take to much seriously. When I do my reviews, I keep it general, as I am trying it, and you might have something that I don't. I find each tobacco, might go with a right pipe and if I did not choose well, I don't want to mislead. I found when I use screens in the bowls, it leaves a slight dampness in the bottom of the bowl, that dries and get re moisturized with the next smoke and at times make that bowl taste horrible. Still learning

I communicated thus stupid frivolous claim to YT…but…they did nothing about it. So I changed the intro music..but…the drums…are still there at the end of the video 😄🥁😉💨💨💨

    Hello Lester, I appreciate your inquiries in to filters and such. Do you think there is a possible risk using silicagel combined with the heat and moisture (there might also be an indicator present - fenolftalein). Silicagel in bags that we encounter are not for oral use. I've read that there are different silicagels. Blue being not healthy, but I'm not a chemist 😊. I use Savinelli balsa system for non-aromatic blends and Vauen active charcoal filtrrs for aromatic ones. In my pipes that actually take filters. Didn't know about charcoal dust. Thanks again for the video. Be well, Janez

    • @RedcoatsReturn
      @RedcoatsReturn  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Janez 👍👍😊 There are different grades of silica gel indeed. Denicotea uses white pure silicagel without a pH indicator. As a chemist…I filled the column for chromatography in the ventilated vacuum cabinets as the silica gel was a fine dust to get better separation of the compounds after eluted with solvent. Silicagel dust is bad for the lungs…like coal dust for miners. However, Denicotea crystals are very large compared to the dust and stay in the same shape after smoking. So I think there is no real danger to use them. The big problem for me is the poor water adsorption for the same reason the crystals are large. So you can use them 1x in a pipe and they are 2x the price of 9mm active charcoal filters that also absorb in their paper layers much better water vapor. So I’ll stay with active charcoal filters generally…using the rest of my Denicotea filters for dry blends with subtle flavors. 😉💨💨💨

      Dan tobacco closed their pipe shop but…they still sell their tobacco through distributors…it could be that K&K took over ownership…makes sense to consolidate their industry…maybe it will preserve thise wonderful blends if Dan Tobaccoo too 😄😉💨💨💨

Surely a cigarette smoker might possibly toke the cherry right down to the red silicone cap... i remain stubbornly filter free, I've tried them, can't stand dealing with em nevermind the non standardisation adding another influence factor to buying a new pipe and possibly ruining the enjoyment of said purchase!

    I have used the Chrystals dropped in the bottom of my bowl before but never in a tube. I might have missed it but did they cut tongue bite for you? I may pick up a few packs to play with for fun and to make a few videos.

    • @RedcoatsReturn
      @RedcoatsReturn  ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly My‘ol Pat…I think these Denicotea 9mm filters failed the test….because…they do not dry as well as active charcoal filters that have paper layers to absorb a lot of vapor water. As steam contributes to tongue bite…that a minus point…also…these Denicotea are about 20cts per filter even if you buy a box…compared to 12cts of each charcoal filters if you buy in bulk. I think you can use them with dry blends or EBs…as they do absorb tar very well and..let more flavour through…if….you smoke them slow and cool. However, their manufacturer Denicotea…retreated from promoting these filters for pipes because if you smoke them fast and hot…even the red cap plastic can failed and at the end…they recommend their Blitz active charcoal Blitz filters…which are cheaper and work better for even fast pipe smokers. I suggested to Denicotea they could fill a paper cartridge with ceramic caps as a new better version for pipe smokers…but…they said…it will be too expensive anyway and its too complex. I hopes this helps Pat…but…its always fun to experiment and have options to get a great dry and cool smoke 😄😉💨💨💨

      I can image that Kai…if the shank is short and the cap is close to the bowl..even the red cap will melt. I think Denicotea stopped recommending these filters for pipe smoking some years ago…they also do not absorb water vapor as well as active charcoal filters with their paper layers…and…the Denicotea filters are twice the price of active charcoal filters too 😉💨💨💨
