     OK... once again from an elderly pipe smoking gentleman (who has, sadly, always tended to be a "wet-smoker"), I'm gonna "let the cat outta the bag" here on a LITTLE TRICK that I've used to solve the tongue bite problem for me... and, it just might work for you, so I'll give away this little "trick" to all my "pipe-smoking brethren" free of charge!... To be PERFECTLY HONEST, the COOLEST, DRIEST smoke that this ole dude ever experiences is in using BOTH a 9mm charcoal filter and a 6mm Savinelli balsa filter SIMULTANEOUSLY in a 9mm churchwarden stem (that is: use BOTH at the same time!)!... The balsa filter absorbs all the moisture, which not only eliminates tongue bite, but, also greatly extends the life of the charcoal filter to at least 2 bowls!... And the balsa filter can be rotated (between 3 or 4 fresh balsa filters), so each can completely air-dry... and, after a few uses, can also be rinsed in vodka, dried, and used over and over again as well!... So, here's the deal: I buy the replacement 9mm bent churchwarden stems (Chinese made) on Amazon... which, BTW, fit only SOME of my Danish, German, and Italian 9mm filtered pipes (ones that have a 0.40" O.D. tenon). Of course, after smoking a bowl, you need to push out the 6mm balsa filter with a LONG pipe cleaner (but that also serves to clean the churchwarden stem with each bowl anyway). Some folks might say, "But, doesn't 2 filters detract from the taste of the tobacco?"... Well , to that, all I can say is: "I can certainly still tell (and enjoy) the differences between all the various blends - Peterson EMP, Plum Pudding, Magnum Opus, Mississippi River, Nightcap, Artisan's Blend, Quiet Nights, etc., etc.... and this trick has GREATLY increased my enjoyment of "pipe smoking, and THAT"S what it's all about - right???? Pipe smoking is about your own "personal enjoyment", NOT copy-catting what someone else TELLS you to do!... Ya gotta do what works for you, so also take what this ole boy says with a grain of salt too - BUT... ya might wanna give the "DOUBLE-FILTER IN A CHURCHWARDEN STEM" a try - because ya just MIGHT like it a lot!... Blessings and happy puffing to you!👍

    Thxs for sharing your experience with filters. I am starting to use filters, but have not yet tried the various types on the market. I just ordered the Savinelli's and we'll see how it goes. Your overview was very helpful.

    Dear Sir, what a bunch of information you brought there to us! The majority of my pipes are 9mm-filtered and I have stuck for quite a while now with the Vauen-Filters. With the 6mm-Filters from Elephant i have made horrible experiences - the way you described it. I had to breakt them and drill them out of my corncobs. As is said in my Savinelli-Bing-Video, i now will try out the Gizeh-filters. I've only got one non-filter-pipe - and i have not smoked it yet very often... only a few times and it was not a satisfying experience because i am used to filters and the smoke was hot and harsh and there was a lot of moisture coming up the mouthpiece. So i bought paperfilters to try it out - the combination of denicool cristalls AND a paperfilter sounds quite interesting - i will give it a try and will report my experiences.
    Thank you for your filter-research i am looking forward to the other filter-videos you've made.
    Greetings

     I have to admit that I'm an elderly pipe smoking gentleman that now ONLY smokes "charcoal filtered" pipes (even though I DON"T inhale). For some reason it seems that using "filters" hasn't caught on yet here in the U.S. like it has in Europe... which really is a shame since, IMHO, it makes for a COOLER, DRIER SMOKE with less chance of tongue bite. Either Vauen 9mm filters (which fit my Danish and German pipes) or Vauen 6mm filters (which fit my Savinelli pipes - replacing their more expensive, less efficient balsa ones) are definitely my "charcoal filters" of choice.

    Great review! I've tried most of these filters. I like alternating between paper, balsa, and charcoal as I see fit and learn. I also use the 3mm ones in filterless pipes. Sometimes you have to bend the end a bit so they don't disappear into the pipe stem. I also cut the 6mm paper ones in half to get more use, and I too have drilled my cob stems if more room is needed. A drum sander on your dremel is great to make the outer ring just a bit looser if a new stem is too tight as well- the rotation kind of guides it around the stem (I add blue tape over the part I don't want to sand). I remove all my filters with tiny pliers- helps stop them from ripping (especially the charcoal ones). I've also used the wire to push stuck ones out when all else fails and there's nothing to grab onto! The best 6mm charcoal for me have been the Vauen and Savinelli ones, they're shorter than the white elephant ones and flow well. I like 9mm filters but most sold in the US are either filterless or 6mm.

    I use 9mm filters in all of my pipes except one. I’ve used vauen, white elephant, stanwell and they are all very good. Trouble free yes. Won’t smoke unless the filter is in place. Very good filter video. I’m definitely sold on the 9mm filters. I don’t get tongue bite from any blend. I smoke non aromatic blends. Plus I blend my own recipes. 😎

    Just found your channel and gowing through your videos. That was very informative and thanks for sharing. I do use 6mm filtered cobs and found a solution for the filters getting stuck inside, but also for the cheap plastic stems. I have replaced all the stems of filtered cobs with the ones from the falcon international pipes. They cost about 6€ and are of great quality, durable for life, they perfectly match the cobs and no problem on removing a wet 6mm filter after smoking.
    Take care and carry on

      The Pipe Nook Me too! Stanwell 9mm is my Nr. 1 filter though...equal with the new White Elephant Supermix 9mm (meerschaum and active charcoal) fir wetter or hotter burning virginias. It may Purize 9mm get onto the top rung but I need to get more experience with them. For 6mm the Purize slims are top rung already, much easier to remove after smoking and better absorbers than Savinelli balsawood 6mm, in my opinion. Take care ol mate 😊😊😉

I’m searching for a 6mm charcoal filter that will work well with my corn cobs but I’m in the US and I haven’t been able to find anywhere locally the Purize or Gizeh filters like the ones you recommend in this video. Blazy Susan filters may be the same thing, I’m not sure... But I found Blazy Susan filters sold locally for $30 US for 100 count.

    • @RedcoatsReturn
      @RedcoatsReturn  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On the Blazy Susan website, they are Purize filters which can be used very well in MM corn cobs and Rossi pipes too. They are shorter than the Savinelli new activated charcoal filters which have more capacity to absorb water vapor and tars in the charcoal. However, the short Purize filters are usually enough for a medium sized bowl pipe to do the job 😉

    Hi there. Excellent video! Just to confirm, do the philltpads help with tongue bite?

    • @RedcoatsReturn
      @RedcoatsReturn  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alex Rank I find they do. They certainly dry the smoke and its partly the steam in the smoke that scalds your tongue. The other contribution to tongue bite are small particles of ash in the smoke which are caustic. There is also a minor tongue bite contribution from tars, which contain phenolics. The latter two contributors can be stopped using filters, active charcoal being the most effective. So I use mostly 9mm filter pipes and place a Sharrow pad in the bowl to ensure a drier smoke. They also prevent gurgling. You can use a Sharrowpad 2-3 times.Take a look at my second video on filters for further alternatives th-cam.com/video/vWTieWTct9U/w-d-xo.html

    Very well done video!
    I’ve discovered recently that I prefer filtered pipes myself, preferably 9mm as well.
    Is there any one of the 9mm charcoal filters that is just slightly larger in diameter? I have a couple pipes where they fit quite loose and even rattle when installed. Thank you for the great info!👍🏼👍🏼

    • @RedcoatsReturn
      @RedcoatsReturn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know the rattling 9mm problem well my friend 😄 Assuming you’ve tried jamming the filter hard to get a grip in the tenon socket without success, these ideas may help. One trick is to wrap sellotape 2-3x at the cooler mouth end of the 9mm filter until it fits but its a pain to do that every time, though its no risk to the pipe. I keep about ten 9mm filters like this for the two pipes I gave that have that problem. A trickier method is to take a acrylic resin or glue and very carefully paste thinly the back end inside walls of the the holder, after it hardens after 24hrs, it should have narrowed the grip…but its a bit messy and a bit risky. A best but expensive solution is to ask a pipe repairer to fit a new stem. As the problem is more common with less expensive pipes, it may not be worth it though. I hope this helps, others may have better ideas 😊😉

    I enjoy the smoke from a pipe, but not the in mouth after taste and, well any taste in the mouth. What is the most effective filter for removing as much taste as possible?

    • @RedcoatsReturn
      @RedcoatsReturn  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lmm Cams A 9mm filter using pure active charcoal, Stanwell have the best draw in my view and plenty of charcoal to adsorb the bitter tar taste. In addition, you could add some 2-3 Denicool crystals into the pipe bowl which adds an additional filter effect. Also, if you smoke very mild tobacco (Velvet or Peterson Early Morning Pipe for example) there will be very little taste to remain in your mouth. You can start with burley blends like Velvet which by their nature tend to be mild in taste. Virginias will have more flavour, latakia more smokiness and perique more spice and fruit flavour, if you want to experiment a bit. During your smoke its a good idea to drink a nonalcoholic cool drink like ice tea, this will flush your mouth of tobacco taste and cool it to prevent tongue bite. Lastly, after smoking you can use a little mouth wash like Biotene, it will rehydrate your tongue and remove any trace flavours of the tobacco. Hope this helps 😊
