About 5 years ago or so, I got a decent job, and I bought my first scope. It was a 10" Orion Push-TO Dobsonian scope. I loved that thing. It never occurred to me that I'd want to actually take pictures, as photography wasn't even on my radar. I had no idea what I was doing. 5 years later I've spent a lot of money on DSLR cameras, go-to tracking mount, new laptop, and as I type this, I'm checking the UPS tracking on a guide camera and scope that I ordered form Orion the other day. I tried to be efficient on the Dobsonian, and hats off to you for being even moderately successful with it.
You've done very well.
If you're anything like me, you're addicted now. There's no going back. If you want to go deeper into astrophotography. Don't continue with a dob. You're gonna spend the money, so you might as well spend it on the right equipment for the job. You seem like you already have researched it and everything, so I'm more talking to the people making comments who are interested in getting into the hobby...
Decide FIRST if you want to be an observer or a photographer. Decide this FIRST before spending money!
If you're going to be an observer, any old scope and mount will do, and that's great. Viewing is easy. All you need are eyes!
If you're going to be a photographer, you're gonna need some SPECIFIC equipment to do the job correctly, and satisfyingly. (And if you still want to be an observer, astrophotography equipment and scopes work fine for that, just not the other way around.)
Astrophotography is a completely different animal, and it's something I didn't realize before deciding on getting into it.
It's POSSIBLE to do both as my man in the video has proved, but if you're going to do that, I implore you not to buy a Dobsonian. Doing it with the wrong tools tools makes it a really hard job, and sometimes impossible! It's like needing a screwdriver to turn a screw, and the only tool you have is a hammer. Sure, you can pound the screw in, but is that the right way to do it? is that efficient? Get a good EQUATORIAL mount that can track the sky smoothly, and a scope that fits on that mount. The mount is where all of your money will go so make sure its a good one, and with GO-TO capabilities. If you don't have the money, save up for it. It is your MOST IMPORTANT item so get a good one!
Bottom line is research first. IF you even THINK that astrophotography MAY be in your future, research the scope, and what you'll need FIRST. Don't just go buying a scope for observation, and think, you'll use it for photography.
I'm sorry. This seemed like a rant, but If I can save just one person here some money by avoiding my mistakes, I've done the right thing.
EDIT: I just discovered your channel, so I had no idea what you did or whatever. Looks like you started out just like me, slowly buying equipment piece by piece and learning processing with each piece until you finally got a badass looking Andromeda! We have parallel stories with this hobby. Very cool!
Old comment but gonna shoot my shot, I want to get into astrophotography, because I love both aspects of it. What would you recommend on a realistic budget. Lets say a telescope in the $1000-$2000 range.

I discovered your channel a few nights ago and am really enjoying it. I've had a 12.5" Dobsonian for years but have never dived into astrophotography seriously. I've always wanted to learn how to "stack" photos and your'e giving some good tips. I've lived in the middle Tennessee area myself all my life too. (grew up in arrington). Anyway...just wanted to say I love your channel.

last night for the first time in my life I used a telescope, my SkyWatcher 1200/150 Dobsonian Classic 150 model (gift from my wife) to see Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, and the Moon
Crazy experience :)
You'll never forget that first time either! It's hard to beat viewing the planets through a dob. I haven't caught Mars yet this season... soon though!. Clear skies friend

It's great to see you getting the most utility possible out of your 8" Dob. For many people, that's about all that they'll ever have, but you can do a lot in the Astronomy hobby with a small Dob or 60mm refractor. Well done!

Great video. Thanks for posting. I have been a wanna be planet watcher since I first saw the rings of Saturn through a telescope while on a camping trip more than 50 years ago, but have had few opportunities. Got to see the moons of Jupiter through binoculars about 25 years ago. And got to stand on the equator and look skyward about 20 years ago. All very thought provoking experiences! LOVE your Milky Way shot. Living close to Chicago, as I do, I never get to see it.

If not an 8 or 10 inch Dobsonian...them certainly going to buy a 6 inch. You have convinced me that a Dobsonian is the way to go, even with being just outside a city I'm sure me and the family will get some great viewing through one of these scopes.

Right now I am using an Orion Apex 127mm Mak which really is a great little scope for solar system objects. This winter I will be buying a Celestron CPC 9.25" Cassegrain. That Milky Way photo is amazing... that's EXACTLY what I want to shoot for, what do you suggest to start off? I've seen your astrophotography gear videos, what do you reckon is a good "budget" set of gear that would allow someone completely new to at least start off?
It’s really hard to go wrong with something like that SkyWatcher Star Adventurer or the iOptron SkyGuider Pro. Pairing either of those with a wide angle lens allows for some amazing Milky Way shots. At the same time, these mounts also teach the basics of polar alignment and learning your way around the night sky. After learning to shoot with the wide angle, you can step up to something like the Canon 135mm for some deeper sky shots.

I have been fortunate to see so much of Jupiter and Saturn this year when I got my first telescope in my 50's. I have a 6 inch Dob and my Samsung phone for a camera. I'm close to taking pictures. Things just haven't lined up yet, but I'm excited.

the moon is the best to look at and process in registax theres some sick things to see on the moon if you have the patience.

That is so fascinating. My first 8” dob is in transit right now. Can’t wait to take delivery of it (and for this damn fog and overcast to clear - been a week now since we have seen the sun and the stars).
I've lived mostly in cities where the nighttime seeing is terrible. But in the late 1990s I was blessed to live on Martha's Vineyard where there were alot of conservation properties on an already rural island. I bought a 4.5 inch reflector telescope and the first time I saw the moon I involuntarily gasped. It suddenly becaome so 3 dimensional, and it was like I was looking at it from across a large field. Also seeing Saturn and Jupiter; it just seemed miraculous.

@@AstroGuy for me i use the Celestron SkyPortal App which is powered by SkySafari 6. There are other ones but i prefer the one i just mentioned. I will give you a list of them tomorrow on your channel ☺

@@AstroB7 It's worse here in India. We don't have many options to buy good telescopes. It's like just one online store for our whole country which ships good telescopes and all of the dobs got sold out even before they reached our sea port.

Was that a random comet at 3:45? Mightve been a bug or headlights tho.. idk lol great video tho brotha! I was planning on getting the Skywatcher 10" Dob Solid Tube but they were so far on back order I ended up canceling the order...Skywatcher is one of my favorite manufactures of telescopes; I have their Evostar 80ED Apochromatic Refractor one of my favorite telescopes I own! But since I got refunded a good sum of cash for that dob. It have me the opportunity to buy two other telescopes: the iOptron 6" Ritchey-Chrétien and the Orion 6" Classical Cassegrain! They are both on a whole other level then any of my other scopes, specifically in their difficulty to master lmao but they are wonderful scopes and definitely would recommend to you or anyone wanting a challenge however a challenge that rewards oneself with a great scope for imaging and a great scope for visual observation!!

Question for ya friend. If you are using just a barlow lens with t-adapter is that essentially prime focusing with your camera? And does that effectively lengthen your primary focal length 2x or 3x? I have the eyepiece projection adapter for my scope because it didn't seem to focus with prime focusing. Anyways nice video, also I built my own 8" newtonian and made a video on my channel. Im thinking about getting a Dobsonian to replace my ETX 80. How is it for looking at the planets with an eye piece (ie, not using a camera). But I am worried about needing a fine focuser. Greats vids any tips here would be great!
Time to get an equatorial platform - having one will improve your dob significantly for both visual and photography!

Also, did you stack all the movies into one picture? Or one movie at a time for multiple pictures? How long were your videos?
I used just 1 video this go around. I’ve tried multiple before, but it can be kind of a headache. The videos were ~30 seconds. In total each pic had ~750 frames.

I live in a fairly rural area so I’m lucky when it comes to darker skies. In a big city, you could still see the planets pretty well!

What’s the name of the eyepiece you are using to see the planets? I just bought Skywatcher 200p, and cant see the planets with the eyepieces that came with. Wondering if its the eyepieces that came with that are too bad or if im doing it wrong somehow. I tried to look at Mars today since that was the only available one at the time and place

hey man, i just recently bought an 8" dobsonian and have bee loving it. it's a hobby like no other in my opinion. looking to get into the photography aspect of it soon. going to be buying a tracking platform soon (nevermind, just heard it in teh video). i think i'll always prefer visual observing though, which is good since i have a dob lol.
What is the difference between the Classic 200P and the Skyliner 200P? I'm about to order the skyliner.

We share both an 8" SkyWatcher and the same NASA t-shirt. My attempt at watching Saturn and Jupiter in conjunction unintentionally turned into a block party. I put the my mask on and kept looking. It is a bit frustrating getting a good clear low humidity night in the Southeast US, but it can be very rewarding when the night is right. I am in the process of making a better platform to roll my out of the garage into the driveway. I might also incorporate an improvised simulated equatorial hinge mount on the base to more closely match the 35 degree latitude where I live. It will tricky to manage that and still keep a stable center balance.
Quick question since it's my first time watching something related to stargazing. Why is the planet continuously moving out of the frame of the camera?
Earth is rotating. For the small scope like my 70mm refractor, it takes about 10 to 15 seconds to cross the eyepiece, needs constant aiming.

@@thewisew0lf947 Juiter is 500 million miles away and Saturn about a billion, shouldn't affect. The earth move causing stars with long exposure photo with trailing lines
@@thewisew0lf947 No planet orbits so fast. Our Moon orbits Earth, and this makes a small difference. You can compute it, or look it up ;-)
What eye piece do i need to see the planets as close as possible? Please tell me
Hello I’m looking for some help I have enough money to afford one or the others a Orion xt10 classic dob, a skywatcher star travel 120 az3 or a skywatcher evostar 720 apo, I’d like to see deep space stuff and see as close to Jupiter as I can. So which one would be the best choice? Any comments welcome, thank you.
I have couple of questions on the dobsonian telescope, firstly how much does an 8inch one weigh and second how easy are they to move around? I currently have a newtonian 130mm tripod mounted, but due to surgery is too heavy with the counterweights on
It’s really not that heavy whatsoever when broken down into 2 pieces - the base and the tube. The main thing is it’s kind of awkward to carry since it’s large. Total I believe is ~ 30lbs. 20 in the base and 10 for the tube.
Nexstar 127 SLT or dobsonian 8 which is more valuable for beginners

I'm slightly disappointed to see the video of your Saturn and Jupiter. They look small with an 8-inch dobsonion. I was comparing it with my 70mm refractor watching the same Saturn and the Jupiter in the last many days. I am also thinking about to buy an 8 inch reflector. How is your deep space objects?
What can I expect to see when looking at Jupiter/Saturn for the first time? I have an AD8 and a Nikon d5100
That's a pretty similar setup to mine, so it'll be close to what I'm showing in the video. However, the actual view through the eyepiece will be brighter and show better detail!

What diameter are your Barlow lenses?
Hi what lense should I use to see Mars , I have an 8” dobsonian skywatcher that came with a 2x Barlow , a 24mm lense and a 10mm lense , and have tried every combination of what I have and I either get a blob with a black dot in the middle or a tiny white dot with no definition. Any advice would be greatly appreciated . Thanks Dave
