I don’t buy cards to compare to others neither do I ever think “maybe this gives me profit” as I don’t buy them to sell. What gives me anxiety is that “investors” flood the market and buy everything and those cards just get to expensive if I don’t buy them right away and I hate that in the hobby.
Deep pocket monster said it best: "Don't compare your collection to others, compare it to your collection last month, or last 6 months, or last year, or last 5 years" I'm paraphrasing but it's so true. Journey before destination.
@@newjones1754 Agreed. I really only collect cards I like and sell the rest so I’m not too concerned with master sets or buying into everything. So that helps.
I'm getting back into collecting. Scarlet and Violet 151 has scratched that nostalgic itch, and I've had the urge to keep picking up packs. I must resist 😂
I really appreciate you touching on this aspect of the hobby and how it’s easy to be financially irresponsible and overindulge if you’re always comparing yourself to others and what they have.
I started collecting pokemon cards with my 7 year old son at the very beginning of just last year… I’m 43 and I’m more into it than my son now… way more, and even though months ago I realized that pokemon card collecting can be a very slippery slope financially… I still got my self into a little bit of financial trouble… this video my friend summed up everything that I couldn’t explain and has helped me a lot, don’t kill yourself trying to enjoy a hobby
Never knew there was this many people who felt like me. Thank you for helping me better understand this situation, definitely always good advice that makes sense and that I actually believed already myself. Keep the great content coming.
I like your minimalist background. Overloaded backgrounds with trendy and expensive products can look tacky. It sets this channel apart and matches your more responsible views on collecting.
Phillip, you give the best real-world advice on TH-cam! One of the most genuine content creators out there and I’m always learning something new. Can’t wait to watch more of your videos in the future

This video is so real. I'm just getting back into collecting and I'm already getting addicted to buying boxes/packs etc when I know I shouldn't. Thank you for being so honest and looking out for us
I once heard that you should never compare your collection to someone else's. Your collection is unique and special in itself because it's a reflection of YOU. Your likes, favorites arts/pokemon, experiences, etc. Amazing video as usual my friend 👏
Same! Sealed products will almost always be worth so much more. Also, it’s better than constantly opening packs, just hoping for that expensive card. Lol
Dude, i really needed to watch this, thank you. You're talking about things i haven't yet accepted for myself. I'm just getting back into cards as an adult, and i really needed to read this before the spending got too crazy. I'm so happy you created this video. Major kudos to you, sir.
This video really opened my eyes this month I went on a spree using my savings to get Pokemon mystery bags hoping to get some high chase cards I did get some hits but even then I always felt like I wanted more and had to be more smart with my money and not go beyond limits.
This really helped me while listening bro, i play One Piece card game , and every deck is fun but very expensive, i found it easy to cope and overspend just to put myself in a hole to fill a void within myself, i knew what i was doing it but this video really helped show me im not alone and the only one making terrible financial decisions for cards. Im going to think win win from now on and sell alot of stuff i dont need This also goes for every other product and market this was way more than a tcg video, it made an impact on my life. Thank you bro , shoutout from Chicago
Great advice as always. I remember that opening packs should be balanced into fun cost as Danny Phantom always says. So I open for fun without spending too much

That’s a great question. If you’re speaking about this channel in particular it would be the ability of connecting with others around the world and how impactful it is.
My main issue with the hobby is that the Pokemon company keeps releasing sets within 2 months of eachother and giving collectors no time to complete sets, or buy sealed products they want. It’s annoying. I feel like I just finished up with purchasing the singles I wanted from twilight masquerade and now there’s already shrouded fable, and then stellar crown a month later lmao. Like can we just relax! The greatest advice I can give is to just wait until the card set lists come out, review those, and then decide if you’d like to make a purchase from there. Don’t just purchase something because you feel everyone else is! The last thing you want to do is invest in a set when you hate the card art! Our money is valuable, be smart about where you put it. Only spend what you know you can afford.
What a great video. I really respect you for making content like this. I feel like people in this hobby, myself included, struggle with overspending. I don’t think I’ve ever seen any other content creator make a video addressing this so mad props to you bro. Keep up the good work
I ve learned to be happy with what I have and not chasing for more and more every day a few years ago when I was on Fiji. The people there are happy all the time and I feel like it´s because they are happy with what they have. Buying stuff makes you happy for a moment but you can also easily get addicted to thatt feeling. I collect pokemon cards like a little art collection and not an investment oppertunity.
I watched this video a bit late haha. I play and collect and I just bought bling for my deck. I never get into debt but I felt I really wanted those cards even thought they’re pricey… but yes, I totally agree with you on the comparison aspect. There will always be someone with more money than you, so even though you keep buying and buying, there will be a new collector with better cards.
Hey Phil, long time fan. It's been such an amazing journey watching your channel go. I always look forward to your videos. I really appreciate how down to Earth you are and that you are always speaking directly with us and feel the same way I do. I always wondered about your collection but it makes sense how I normally feel after seeing others showcase all the huge hits / products they have. I was wondering if you'd every create a video or some videos answering questions from your audience about some products. Such as: would you consider purchasing 2 Pokemon Center ETBs of Shrouded Fable or purchase a Japanese 151 Booster Box?
Wow!This is a brilliant video! Definitely can relate to it, and of course my wife as she has seen me go through MOFO on Pokemon. Your videos aren’t just about Pokemon, but allowing as humans to think and help those who are going through this as well speak. 👌❤️
Do you think it's good to make a database of all your cards/sealed products etc? I'm getting at a point where i have to much stuff and need to track what i have got. Great video again my man hope you have a good one!
The simple solution to this is spend what you can afford….its that easy people and spend the money knowing that it can go to zero. As the man says himself….its a hobby.
