    So for those who don’t know what Break cards do, they essentially act as an additional evolution but instead of covering the entire card below it, it instead just gives you an extra ability and more health.

    The story behind these is actually amazing. It basically has to do with two alternate dimensions that crashed together. This is one is really the result of those two worlds colliding. Modern day crashed into a more mythic age and those worlds being put together made this kinda steampunks world. It all happened cuz of Hoopa opening just SO MANY portals.

    Fun little detail about the Steam Seige cards: a lot of them have a conected "theme". If you know what to look for, quiet a view of them have a sort of red "cloud" bleading into the card design in the background, which is representing a rift between two timelines/universes. If I remember right, that was also the reason some of the cards have double typing. (For more detail, I recoment the video "When the Cards tell a story..." by Lockstin & Gnoggin. The video is all about different pokemon cards that have hidden connections and secretly tell a story! )

But still its been really fun, and even more so because I feel like I was informed by your approach in just appreciating the cards for their beauty and rarity, outside of monetary value. Funnily enough, you pulled the steam seige Aipom, a card that is one of my favourites, and youve mentioned many times that base set two is one of your favourite sets, and just the other day I bought two random 4$ packs from a dollarstore, and managed to pull a sword and shield promo holo eevee, 3 XY evolutions cards, one neogenesis card, a base set card, and last but not least a base set 2 pokemon center and base set 2 onix. I was around when they released this set and I could understand why this set was hated, this set was one of the less enjoyed sets. One thing for sure I feel that many people hated this set was because this set was put into many things like tins and other similar bundle-like things. Another reason in my opinion was because that apparently the pull rates (many people consider it being a holo or greater) was apparently increased in Sun and Moon and there was cooler stuff like rainbow rares. This set was also one of the last set of XY and I never hear anyone talk about Margarina and Volcanion so they might have not been pokemon many people cared about plus the break cards are somewhat easy to get and were never seen as cool cards to get. Personally, I don't hate this set but I never got anything better than a Margarina full art and some break cards, but when you compared it to generations which released around the same time or at least was the set between fates collide and steam siege. Steam siege definitely felt like the more underwhelming set-in comparison to the set that had many og full arts, mega's and ex's while fates collide didn't really have any cool cards besides the full art umbreon and secret alakazam but it wasn't pushed into other bundles like how steam siege was because I heard there were putting in steam siege stuff into some of the earlier Sword and Shield stuff (don't take my word for this Sword and Shield stuff bc I can't say for certain but people definitely did not like how this set kept on coming back up in the newer bundles at least at the time)

Like obviously if you're aware of the general price of cards it'll influence how excited you get over the big cards, but your cool and casual attitude towards opening cards is very refreshing to see! I honestly feel the same about Steam Siege, I got into Pokémon right before Sword and Shield came out, so this was one of the first sets I experienced. I got some awesome cards, including the shiny Mega Gardevoir AND the alt-art with Yveltal. I'm honestly happy to open ANY sets that came before the Sword and Shield era. I'm really glad you gave it a chance and enjoyed it, I loved watching!
    Btw, your lack of excitement for the shiny Bisharp bothered me, I'd be over the moon 🤣 (love the Azumarill, too)

    Just found your channel, very glad I did! I like how you take your time opening packs, my favorite part of the opening a pack is appreciating the art. And believe me, as a mega fan of Pokémon, those people commenting about you being a “fake fan” don’t get it. Everyone starts somewhere! Keep doing what you enjoy!

    Steam Siege was not a bad set when it released. Xerneas (Rainbow Road) was a popular deck back then with all the dual type pokemon. Volcanion EX was also a strong card back then as well. The Mega Gardevoir EX saw play in expanded with the Giratina from Sun/Moon Lost Thunder when that came out. But since then, Steam Siege has fallen out of relevancy and the pulls from the set just aren't that exciting anymore. Steam Siege also became "that one pack" you always got in every pokemon product. It was annoying because there aren't any valuable cards in the set and nothing in the set is "playable" anymore with regards to the TCG. So it felt like a wasted pack.

    Oh my god! I remember this kid at my school having the xerneas break and talonflame break I think, if that even is a thing and not my failing memory. I remember wanting those golden cards... I remember ~6 year old me getting so excited when I got a blastoise spirit link, because for my kid self it was the closest I'd get to a good card.
    These cards are from the time I started collecting, so this video was a nostalgia trip. Now I have quite a bit of GX/EX (I get them mixed up a lot) cards and valuable reverse holos :)

    I think the coherent feeling about gen 2 might be related to memories and nostalgia because I personally feel like gen 7 has an insanely coherent feeling with all of them giving off the tropical and exotic feeling . Gen 6 also quite feel like that but without the exotic feeling as both Kalos and Galar have their origins quite close to my home

  • @SecondAlias
    @SecondAlias ปีที่แล้ว +1

    iirc, gen 2 pokemon are effectively just an extension of gen 1 as there was a limit to how much data could be stored in the original gen 1 game cartridges, so gen 2 featured pokemon that they ran out of space for in the original game. I think there are definitely pokemon in later gens where the style is more complex or feature more than two colors, but I think that impression probably comes more from nostalgia and the loss of pastel watercolor art that you'd find in stuff like game walkthroughs and box art, or even the simplicity of the old tv show. If magmar or jynx were released this day, they would be branded just the same as any of the other new pokemon's designs I bet.

    I remember this set for being one of the available sets when I first got into The trading cards I think my first pack was generations but this was probably one of the first I open so I love the set and hate evolution because they are way too abundant that’s the one that should be hated just so many evolution packs I have four secret rare here comes team rockets I don’t need all of them (did I just complain about having too many secret rares)

  • @owenfautley
    @owenfautley ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Steam siege is a nice set, the reason it is hated on is the same as when xy evolutions was hated at the time and that was due to how commen they were every tin or collection box had them.
    I like how you are not including the price because personally I put a big portion of the blame for the current inflation of these cards on them bcasue Logan Paul and scalpers would have seen these prices and jumped on them to profit hurting the community.

    The thing I hate the most about steam seige is how they made the multi-type pokemon look, like they look genuinely bad. They couldn't split it down the middle like digimon or give it a nice blend or special frame like magic cards have. Its just uncomfortable to look at.

    It’s great to see someone new opening cards. I find watching more prominent openers can get stale because they don’t take their time viewing the cards, and they really only care about the sets with monetary value. Your bit on Rebels Clash and Battle Styles was great. People only care about the sets with Charizard and whatever is expensive, and just ignoring other sets.
