Nice video. It is an interesting part of Chinese history never will probably never be confirmed in writing, but the earlier culture was there, non matter what they called themselves. Japan also has an interesting ancient past that isn’t recorded in writing, full of legendary emperors. It’s interesting the first records of Japan are by the Chinese and those records can’t even be confirmed locally in Japan.

Interesting that you’ve mentioned the Japanese context because I’ve written a script on the earliest accounts of Japan that I need to record and make a vid for

Yeah, the Xia probably was real but anything in specific written by the grand historian might be a myth.
He did have access to older writing when he wrote it, like the history of Qin for instance, he likely also had things recorded by Zhou and the name was probably remembered. The fact that we archaeologically found a culture matching his description rather well points towards it being more then a coincidence.
These kinda of stories tend to mix truth and myth though, just like Snorri's Heimskringla, so we can't take everything in them literary and some healthy skepticism does not hurt.
    Still, propably a real thing.
There are other things the Grand historian writes that are debated, like if the First Emperor really burned those books or not, he was politically motivated and the story that the Chinese empire started with Xia, then Zhou to Qin and finally to his Han gives them more of a divine right to rule.
It is certainly a fascinating topic, thanks for making a vid about it. 😀

Great response. And I’m not just saying that because we have such similar views!

@@LazyChillHistory Thanks, I am just in the middle of reading a book about the First emperor so I have a lot of Chinese history in my mind at the moment.
I kinda missing a lot there so I decided to read up on it, particularly Bronze age China and the warring states period are very interesting.
The Grand Historian is on my list, I have read excerpts from it so far but really should read the entire thing. But I have a lot of books I need to read, I usually try to read one a week.
