i don’t think some people quite understand the danger of performing some of her moves when her mental state is not 100%. just the fact that she landed on her feet was a testament to her abilities as a gymnast. at such heights, if not landed properly, a broken bone and even a broken neck could end everything for a gymnast.

If any of y'all watched the qualifiers, it was already a good tell of how she was already off going into the Olympics. Sure, she was still rated the best, but she messed up almost all her routines: she went off the floor during her floor exercise, went out of bounds for her vault, and messed up her dismount from the balance beam. She is not quitting from a single fail, she is withdrawing because of a culmination of factors on and off the floor.
And I'm willing to bet that the same people who vilify her for withdrawing after her vault, would vilify her for not doing well in the rest of the events and would force her to compete even if she risked career ending injury.

This realization I had about Simone Biles is gonna make some people mad, but oh well.
Yesterday I was excited to show my daughters Kerri Strug's famous one-leg vault. It was a defining Olympic moment that I watched live as a kid, and my girls watched raptly as Strug fell, and then limped back to leap again.
But for some reason I wasn't as inspired watching it this time. In fact, I felt a little sick. Maybe being a father and teacher has made me soft, but all I could see was how Kerri Strug looked at her coach, Bela Karolyi, with pleading, terrified eyes, while he shouted back "You can do it!" over and over again.
My daughters didn't cheer when Strug landed her second vault. Instead they frowned in concern as she collapsed in agony and frantic tears.
"Why did she jump again if she was hurt?" one of my girls asked. I made some inane reply about the heart of a champion or Olympic spirit, but in the back of my mind a thought was festering:
    *She shouldn't have jumped again*
The more the thought echoed, the stronger my realization became. Coach Karolyi should have gotten his visibly injured athlete medical help immediately! Now that I have two young daughters in gymnastics, I expect their safety to be the coach's number one priority. Instead, Bela Karolyi told Strug to vault again. And he got what he wanted; a gold medal that was more important to him than his athlete's health.
I'm sure people will say "Kerri Strug was a competitor--she WANTED to push through the injury." That's probably true. But since the last Olympics we've also learned these athletes were put into positions where they could be systematically abused both emotionally and physically, all while being inundated with "win at all costs" messaging. A teenager under those conditions should have been protected, and told "No medal is worth the risk of permanent injury." In fact, we now know that Strug's vault wasn't even necessary to clinch the gold; the U.S. already had an insurmountable lead. Nevertheless, Bela Karolyi told her to vault again according to his own recounting of their conversation:
"I can't feel my leg," Strug told Karolyi.
"We got to go one more time," Karolyi said. "Shake it out."
"Do I have to do this again?" Strug asked.
"Can you, can you?" Karolyi wanted to know.
"I don't know yet," said Strug. "I will do it. I will, I will."
The injury forced Strug's retirement at 18 years old. Dominique Moceanu, a generational talent, also retired from injuries shortly after. They were top gymnasts literally pushed to the breaking point, and then put out to pasture. Coach Karolyi and Larry Nassar (the serial sexual abuser) continued their long careers, while the athletes were treated as disposable resources.
Today Simone Biles--the greatest gymnast of all time--chose to step back from the competition, citing concerns for mental and physical health. I've already seen comments and posts about how Biles "failed her country", "quit on us", or "can't be the greatest if she can't handle the pressure." Those statements are no different than Coach Karolyi telling an injured teen with wide, frightened eyes: "We got to go one more time. Shake it out."
The subtext here is: "Our gold medal is more important than your well-being."
Our athletes shouldn't have to destroy themselves to meet our standards. If giving empathetic, authentic support to our Olympians means we'll earn fewer gold medals, I'm happy to make that trade.
Here's the message I hope we can send to Simone Biles: You are an outstanding athlete, a true role model, and a powerful woman. Nothing will change that. Please don't sacrifice your emotional or physical well-being for our entertainment or national pride. We are proud of you for being brave enough to compete, and proud of you for having the wisdom to know when to step back. Your choice makes you an even better example to our daughters than you were before. WE'RE STILL ROOTING FOR YOU! (written by Byron Health)

Withdrawing to protect herself from injury was a good thing to do, but my heart also breaks for the other girls on the team, who were no doubt, depending on her, and wanted to win (maybe expected to win?) gold. The thing is, the team was by itself not that good and this is not Simone's fault. The 2016 Team could have managed the gold without Simone. Simone was a star but the others were also absolutely dominant, each one a gymnastics legend. This team was also great and silver is excellent, but it was nothing like the Rio Team. Simone probably saw this, and felt extra pressure as the group leader. The media didnt help, by making it all about her, when in reality she could have relied on Sunisa Lee quite a lot and share the burden. I hope that the federation handles it better in the next years, and maybe makes better choices.

She had "the twisties" which are incredibly disorienting, and frightening. That means that none of her high level twisting elements that she depends on were possible (Amanar, Triple Double, Double Double, etc). As more information comes out about the situation, I feel that she 100% made the right decision. Essentially, her routines were gone, and she had to step out to prevent the team from counting very low scores, and to prevent herself from being injured.. Mental blocks can take weeks to months to recover from, so she could potentially be out of the games entirely. I support her decision.

Regardless of what the reasons were, it seems like she was just letting her team down and it really honestly seems like she was only concerned for her *own* reputation, not her teams. I don't even think I have heard of an Olympic gymnast backing out last minute, especially the captain. I mean, Alicia Sacramone made major errors at the 2008 games but she still pushed through because she said herself that being captain that she had a responsibility to stick with. Her routines involve a lot of risky moves that, if you freak out during them and get 'lost in the air', as she did on her first vault, can lead to broken bones and worse. She wouldn't be much use to the team in that state either. So better to exit before hurting herself or potentially killing herself (which is possible if you get lost in the air during one of the floor tumbling passes she does).

If you're feeling the pressure, you need to tell your coaches and teammates and allow someone else --- one of the alternates --- to take your place. Why promised you're going to go through with it, helping to lift your team and country and THEN quit literally in the middle of your own apparatus and then say, "Well, I'll return for the individual finals"?
If the team was larger, say, 5 and the worst score is dropped, fine. But when there's only 4 and you quit and your 3 other team members are given ZERO chance to make a mistake, since all 3 scores are counted, whereas the Russians have 4 & could choose to drop their worse performer's score?
You think it's a good time to feel the pressure & quit in the middle of your routine, in such a dire situation?
That is a very, very bizarre rational for a "pressured" athlete to have. We never considered pulling her out of a competition just because of injury. As long as the doctor gives her the clearance to compete, she competes, and we know with injury she would not perform her usual standards but that is ok. It is ok to win sometimes and lose other times, it is all part of the challenge. You may have an off day and don’t do so well, that is fine, just try again next time. She has even win all around gold with 2 injuries. Of course her level is much lower than Simone’s and the pressure level is not the same, but it is the same mental game, that you just don’t quit because you have an off day. The organization has failed to thoroughly investigate who else was complicit in the abuse and has continued to sweep the worst moments of more than 250 women and girls’ lives under the rug. In Aly Raisman’s words, “he perpetrated the worst epidemic of sexual abuse in sports history,” and Simone Biles carries that everyday. She’s a human with severe trauma in her background and the weight of the world on her shoulders. And she’s probably very alone right now.
