I don't think humans have fully understood the past as of yet.... In yet we have so many who try too understand it.. Why do we have many that try to understand it and others who laugh at our past and do the exact same thing that ends in our demise?
Ashley Hruska As I see it it's because our supposed intelligence is partly just visions of our own hubris. We may in some respects be the stupidest species ever.
to all those in doubt about video games as art... let them play metro, thier doubts shall be no more! i belive both this and half life provided us with REAL interactive storytelling, they arent trying to be "cinematic" this is true interactive storytelling!
Uhm I'm sorry to try to come and correct you but perhaps it would have been better for Half Life series to give Gordon Freeman a personality, aswell as a voice at some moment...because I have to say that at least for me his complete lack of personality, voice, and the fact that the only science related thing we see him doing is pushing a stone to a light, plug the electricty and pull down switches...well...at first I did not cared but then it became a turndown at least for me. Don't get me wrong, sometimes a character without a voice is not much of a big deal but sometimes it is something a game does not need, and Half Life could have tried to give Gordon a voice at least try to figure a way out to make him remain silent without making him look like he had no personality
NekoSoren dude him being mute (in HL2 even more so) brings out the personality even more and goes far beyond what halo attempted with "the faceless protagonist" . Gordon's personality is developed trough other characters interaction with him and its into each player to gain their own grasp of the character in which some may agree and some may not. It establishes enough that he is developed and leave enough for the player to assume on his own and even more makes you wonder who or WHAT Gordon Freeman really is.
cropathfinder Uh with all due respect...despite this was clearly attemped by the makers of the game I really did not saw it working. The interactions we got with others characters did not developed Gordon as a character, in fact instead of helping they made me wonder if Gordon actually felt something at all. Considering all he went through they could have given us an small part where he actually spoke or said something, and not for the sake of him speaking but for the sake of actually getting a hint of how he felt about this whole situation. And about your point about leaving enough for us to assume...well...I'm afraid to say that at least from my point of view they basicly gave us a blank piece of paper and tell us to imagine completly how he was. This is not a bad thing to do, but on Half Life series it just gives a feeling to many of us that they did not cared about the main character at all and decided to leave the rest for us to assume, and to be honest...I think the crowbar in the game has more of a personality than he does. Ok now, about Halo, what they did was not reflect Master Chief personality through himself but mainly through Cortana, and the interactions between the two and with others. In any case, my point here is not that half life is a bad game...but in terms of main character development, the game...fails to deliver us a memorable character or at least a character at all, still, this is just my opinion
NekoSoren You're missing the whole point. He didn't have a voice because you were meant to immerse yourself and as a result be projected in to his position. Without a voice, he could be anyone you wanted him to be; A mild mannered scientist whose simply doing all he can to get out alive, or a rueful ass who finally gets to give all of those lugnut marines and aliens a lead salad that they'd deserved since high school. Ripped vaguely from a Yahtzee Croshaw review.
Dastardly Distaste Except *I* (Not precisely me, but the human psyche) does not operate by game mechanics or a set narrative. It cannot fully project your mind into the protagonist of the game, since whatever you do, even with multiple-choice games, you are limited to a certain set number of actions and narrative that the psyche does not comform to. Even more so that much of psychological stimuli also comes from physcial stimuli, and what you're mostly doing while playing games are: Tada! Sitting down and pressing buttons. And if you wanted the character to be "whatever you want him to be", that would also really kill the note of it being art, if say that your mind or your character is... Deadpool. Now Artyom from Metro, is a silent person for the most part, but he does express himself in his actions, his interactions (and he actually utters words at times - wouldn't be able to speak for Last Light though, haven't played it). No matter how much you love the game(s) he never is the blank slate for you to project into, as he already has a defined character (even more so if you have read the books already ;) )
I remember when I heard this song first time. I was sitting and wondering how true these words were. 'The day the world died nothing was learned.' Yes, these words are painfully true.

So wait, it took this game to make you understand that the most destructive weapons ever successfully created by man would be/were the most frightening and inhumane devices ever used in war?
The Addiction 2 Just hearing that in history class doesn't make me fear them, what I've read on them used to be just words on a paper, a history that doesn't affect me. Then I realized the real impact of them by playing Fallout. I got to see their effects firsthand, I got to see and realize their destruction. This game is similar, you don't read or think of the power of a war, you see, feel and live it through this game.
The Addiction 2 Personally I Think the bio-chemical weapons are a lot worse. Although the effects from the fallout is deadly and horrible, it will atleast kill you quickly if you are Close to the explosion.
Miros Rikof Well said. I pray that I will never be forced to see the true power of a nuclear bomb and that I living it through Fallout and Metro 2033 was enough.
A open world metro game would be *AMAZING*! Sure, we've got STALKER. But really, an open world metro game would be absolutely amazing. Also, i would love to see things from the book such as that humans cant go up in broad daylight because their eyes are used to the darkness that is the metro. A bit more on the Followers of the Great Worm Cult would also be cool :D
They will release Metro 2033 and Metro last light redux. Everything remade. Better level trasitions graphics 60FPS on consoles. And more. It will be amazing.
partytor11 Sorry for reviving this.....again. But now that I think about it. An open world Metro game WOULD be amazing. Yes....Stalker is there, but not in this setting. Exploring the tunnels. Going outside. Being careful of day and night cycles. Finding bullets. Exploring buildings. Helping people. Having to avoid those anomalies (Kinda ripping off of Stalker), but not like Stalker. Those anomalies would give you flashbacks. Sometimes you would see something useful. Other times something you never want to see.
Now that I study Russian, I have realised that the words for world and peace are the same (mir). Was it just coincidence or were you intentionally playing with that polisemy? Doubt that you will respond in a 2 year old video, but can´t hurt to ask. Also, love your work, keep it up!
If you are asking if I am still alive, well Hell yes. After Artyomka left me back in the church, one Red Line's Stalker group found me.I returned to Red Line and comrade Moskovin wasn't very happy, because I didn't accomplish my mission.I didn't killed d'Artagnan and neither I capture the Dark One. Moskovin was already removed from his position,so Korbut send me to a trial.Fortunately he took as a fact my loyalty to the Red Line and he didn't killed me.He removed from my rank and the army. This is also the reason why I didn't died at D-6.After Korbut's death a man called Nikolai toke the leadership of the Red Line's army.So he offered me to rejoin the army, and me as a good Communist which I am,I accepted it. But anyway blyadj, what happened to Artyom? What happened to d'Artagnan?
Pavel Morozov I heard rumors that some "invisible watchers" or something teleported into D6 and gave a major headache to everyone there. I know for a fact that Korbut was knocked unconscious during battle and the Order finished him causing the Red soldiers to surrender. The D6 crew spent weeks removing all the C4 they had installed for self destruction in case Korbut had won. I've been working for Andrew The Blacksmith and so I spend a lot of time hearing for radio transmissions about these stories in his radio sets. Usually Artyom's channel is quite open, but it got silent recently. Last time I got a signal he was on the surface near Exhibition. Well... back to try communicating with the Emerald City.
in my opinion your best song ever... Capturing such emotion isn't something just any artist can do. Something about this piece was almost poetic, and truly captured the folly of humanity if ever such a catastrophe was to come to pass.....

TheKhopesh Well, no suprise. And now, a question: Why is a totally non -talented JB famous, but such pearls like Gavin are unheard of?
TheKhopesh Bieber. That description can be put into that one surname.
I can tell you why, marketing. These marketing exces knows that tweenage girls is a good demographic to cater to, and they though Bieber would be a good marketing tool for them. And evidently they were right, cuz he ended up making them millions upon millions of dollars. I'm sure of Gavin started marketing himself more, maybe even started touring with his music, his popularity would skyrocket.
The day the world died... nothing was learned. somehow, I see this as quite realistic. humans take quite a lot to learn from their mistakes.
I don't think humans have fully understood the past as of yet.... In yet we have so many who try too understand it.. Why do we have many that try to understand it and others who laugh at our past and do the exact same thing that ends in our demise?

As I see it it's because our supposed intelligence is partly just visions of our own hubris. We may in some respects be the stupidest species ever.
We will never totally learn from history and achieve full peace until we learn to respect one another for our cultures, religions, races etc.

Birdblizzard I know exactly what you mean. We see ourselves as smart, but some of us can't even type English well, and we made the language!
to all those in doubt about video games as art... let them play metro, thier doubts shall be no more! i belive both this and half life provided us with REAL interactive storytelling, they arent trying to be "cinematic" this is true interactive storytelling!
NekoSoren
You're missing the whole point.

If the world died who would learn?
What would there be to learn? Killing is bad? No, the only lesson to learn from global armageddon brought on by conflicting philosophies is to put survival before ideology. People would still kill but out of greed rather than zealotry if they learned the lesson told here.

This is the only game that has ever made me realise how horrible and firghtening global Nuclear destruction would be.
Although the effects from the fallout is deadly and horrible, it will atleast kill you quickly if you are Close to the explosion.
greyassassin24 The only way to truly know war, is to participate in one yourself. Then you will see how much of a hell war is.

partytor11 Sorry for reviving this.....again.

Actually no... I have fell in love with it.
Op-pa, that is good Athos, are you okay after d'Artagnan left you?
***** What the hell hero?! Don't you want to find Anna?
