    Great review as always. Thanks to your reviews I bought inpeak for the gravel bike and assioma duo for the road one, which ended up with experiences similar to yours. Both are great (as much as the single leg inpeak can be). What's really amazing is that when I compared inpeak and left assioma pedal reading (doubled), they usually gave the very same watts, sometimes 1-2W off at 300W per several minues at worst.

    wow, that is a pretty open report. they seem to be leaning into the "we're an engineering company, and we are making data acquisition devices" side of things (very good idea in my opinion). They could have dismissed the issue, or even provided a 1 sentence changelog to the effect of "updated correction(s) for sensor drift, works now"
    Pricing is pretty good to... if only it wasn't a choice between 11 speed brifter upgrade or a power meter...

    Interesting vid Shane. Great response by InPeak to the identified problem. As a consumer, that provides confidence in their company.
    Shane, as you've done more testing, have your thoughts on single leg PMs vs dual leg PMs changed? My experience (I have a single leg PM, dual leg PM and Kickr Core) has been that the single leg PMs are producing sound results (and consistent). I generally have a fairly even leg balance (50/50 or 49/51). I'm wondering whether the supposed benefits of the dual side PM are not as important as the marketing departments are trying to convince us. For argument's sake, if someone had a more pronounced imbalance, a single leg PM may read higher or lower for that individual...does that matter if the PM is consistent?

    • @gplama
      @gplama  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Single side is fine up to a point. Dual is the true story though. It depends on the compromise.

    I've been using a dual sided power meter for a while but had to replace it. My L-R balance has always been 47-53 or 46-54. Are there any options with any single-leg power meter to adjust for this difference to report a proper power vs having about 92-94% if I only used left leg? Thanks!

    • @gplama
      @gplama  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Some units have scaling. I used to like this.... but I'd rather see accurate power meters and people use left/right meters if they have imbalances (as the balance changes a LOT due to effort and fatigue)

    I am making assumptions here, assuming most of us cyclists would like a power crank meter from having one on our turbo trainers, so looking for power numbers to match. I appreciate that you mostly use the AssiomaDuo to compare. Would it be just as simple to have turbo and power crank meter on at same time to compare? or is there a bit more to it than that. Im considering purchasing the InPeak, doing a comparison, if it doesn't match up, return said item. Cheers for all you do.

    • @andrewmcalister3462
      @andrewmcalister3462 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      In this case, being able to look at L&R power separately helped Shane identify places where his own power was imbalanced, but the L only powercrank was measuring correctly.

    • @koromuri97
      @koromuri97 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@andrewmcalister3462 Hi, I probably didn't explain myself very well. I was trying to ask that if having a crank power meter, on the turbo bike, would give similar numbers to that as on the Wahoo kickr. Just wanting to confirm results would be nearly the same. Then putting crank power meter onto best bike for outdoors, and seeing similar numbers to that as indoors.

    • @andrewmcalister3462
      @andrewmcalister3462 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Differences will apply due to: 1. Drivetrains losses 1-2%, 2. L/R imbalances that will vary with each user. 3. Measurement errors - Shane's video suggests these will be small.

    Shane - are you concerned that manufacturers might be using you and your valuable testing infrastructure as free* consultancy rather than invest in more rigorous in-house protocols and wouldn't you be concerned that InPeak are, in a roundabout way, using your involvement (and therefore brand) in the update as a badge of quality? Let's face it, if I did a load of testing and provided feedback on their product they would never in a million years name-check me in their literature.
    *I get the impression that you wouldn't charge for the service you are providing.
    I don't know about anyone else but I feel like this general topic would make for a good dicussion in The Fit File since DCR must be in a similar position.

    • @gplama
      @gplama  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Excellent question. The cycling industry is full of unsubstantiated marketing claims because there's no industry standard certifications for the technology we buy. It's also full of paid promotions on the marketing and 'influencer' side of things too. That's what makes the world go around. Want a product to sell? Pay a shitton of cash to have it showcased by a few magazines and the stand-out TH-cam channels. Done. Does the product REALLY work? That doesn't matter.
      At this point in time it's still early days for me trying to be heard in this industry. By that I mean it's still a work in progress proving that my testing protocols, data collection, methods/etc are valid and can be trusted. The recent Shimano based LR power meter issue I've written a report on has helped here. 100s of data points. Confirmation by a power meter designer/inventor, etc.
      The response from Shimano has been ice cold on that. To put it politely. Compare that to Inpeak who reached out and acknowledged the issues, worked on them, and made a better product that changed my experience with their tech. That I applaud. They wanted to pass the Lama Lab Test. Shimano? They don't care. I'd say they're borderline fraudulent in their claims of accuracy. The others are in the same boat, so they've ignored it. The reason being - The problem can't be solved with the current cranks. And that's something they'd want to hide.
      Anyhow - I'm ranting now...
      I'm happy if a company can make a product that just works. And if it doesn't work, I'm happy to help out where I can to provide information that might assist them in resolving their issues. This TH-cam gig isn't forever. It's just so I can be heard, and can inform people sometimes what they're looking at purchasing is a steaming pile of shit.... or on the flip side, it's good. The real work is all away from the camera, testing, swearing, telling companies to shove their cease and desist letters up their arse, then... after all that... maybe putting together a video or two, so I can be heard and collect a few $ from TH-cam to keep doing what I'm doing. For now.

      @@gplama Thanks for the detailed reply. I hope you realise how valuable your 'work' is to the viewers of this channel. The manufacturers are fools if they don't use your feedback but you do need to keep a tight grip on the integrity of your brand. Keep at it.
