    I have an older gen 4iiii single side on my winter bike - it's never missed a beat. I guess I feel the need to defend 'good enough' power data where the use case makes spending a lot more hard to justify. That said, I do appreciate your attention to detail

    I’ll be sticking with my earlier Precision 2. I keep meaning to test battery life (using Strava gear record) but I’m confident I’m getting way over the 100 hours quoted. Battery door has been reliable at keeping water and dust out entirely.

    Glad I ordered the precision 2 as a factory install for my 8100 crank. I didn’t see the appeal of the precision 3 even without these test data. Only advantage is the longer battery life and lower profile. But overall I think the 2 is the better powermeter. No issues at all, battery life is good enough and it has chipolo tracking.

    Apparently they just released the new public firmware update 1.2.0. I will be trying to update tomorrow and hopefully it will switch from my current beta version to this new public firmware. Some notes I received:
    Here are the release notes for firmware version 1.2.0 Realtime Terrain Auto-Optimizing Firmware update:
    Specifically developed to guarantee optimal performance and unwavering accuracy across any riding surface.
    Uses the accelerometer for exceptional battery life on smooth steady state cruising and automatically switches to the gyroscope on rough terrain, gravel or for the high RPM sprints.
    Improved cadence reliability for buttery smooth power measurement.
    Instantaneous startup and transitional responsiveness for those sprinting from 0 to hero, up to 220 rpm!
    Industry dominating battery life on a coin cell.
    Other improvements over firmware version 1.1.0:
    Power and cadence accuracy
    Power and cadence delay
    Power and cadence smoothness
    Cadence drops & spikes
    Connectivity
    Missing power peaks on short sprints (under 8 seconds)
    With two patents pending for new technologies developed, the PRECISION 3 firmware update 1.2.0 will be available for all PRECISION 3 owners starting March 30, 2023 via the 4iiii app. More details on the specifics of the firmware, testing processes, and future innovations will be hosted on 4iiii.com’s blog page.

    Just for some balance in the comments. Previously I was running the second gen 4iiii precision on my road bike. No issues. I am still running 4 units of the 4iiii precision 3 left crank power meter. On three different mtb and on my road bike. I had to return one unit straight out of the box because it was faulty from the start but otherwise all units have been running without issues for the past year. On my request 4iiii pushed the beta firmware to my devices and I have no issues with dropping or lagging data on my garmin 830 and 1040. I am running the second last beta version. Waiting for 4iiii to release a new public firmware update. And of course waiting for the detailed tests.

    Thanks for confirming my thoughts on this power meter. Having purchase one when they were first made available I immediately noticed that it did not track like the Tac Neo2 or Assioma's when compared using data from Zwift rides (lower high end power and then the power would drift up and exceed the Assioma's after 30mins.) on Zwift Power. Even with the new firmware it's still drops cadence (80ish rpm) and loses signal to the Garmin 830 head unit. Since this is now on my gravel bike It'll be a while before I retest the meter's performance with Zwift data.

    I've owned a few power meters. The previous gen 4iiii was both the most accurate and also the worst quality PM I've ever had. The strain gauge failed after 20 months; zero watts but accurate cadence. 3 riding friends all had the same issue, all at the 18-24 month period. Looking around the net, it appears to be a surprisingly common issue. Its a real shame as, when it worked. the PM was very accurate and clearly had good firmware which avoided some of the crazy power spikes of competing brands. 4iiii will ask you to replace the battery etc etc but they know what the issue is.

    @JoshPeak 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Seems like 4iiii’s has the strain gauge dialled in but the cadence issues are weird, especially since the Assioma’s cadence sensing is dialled in.
    That said I’m happy with my 4iiii 105 Gen 2. The accuracy trade-off is proportional to what I paid for and addresses the amateur cycling “general fitness” market I’m in.
    Also the “can I justify the price to my wife” factor puts the Assiomas out of reach.

  • @polarisb518
    @polarisb518 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Sadly, the issue is not the PM performance as much as 4iiii credibility.
    They have been selling a product they know to be faulty, they advertise it as innovative and they roll out several firmware updates with no customers’ knowledge of the matter whatsoever.
    The fact that they take money for something they have known for 6 months to be faulty, according to at least two well known independent reviewers, can in some cases be more than a customer relations issue and more of a legal one.
    Budget PM or not…nobody wants to pay close to or more than 400$ for a faulty product.

      Given that your power meter will double the left side power for the total power, it will report 53*2 = 106% of your actual power.
      Therefore, your actual power is 1/1.06 = 0.943 times what the left sides power meter would report. This number is your scale factor.

So if you have it connected to your phone or another bike computer it will not see/connect it. I will have to try for a longer ride to see if the data readings are consistent and don’t drop out. is it a thing that a pedal power meter isn't as accurate when focusing on the power transferred to the drive train, the give on a pedal plus a crank arm must be more than with just the crank arm, so the "power" that's being recorded on the pedal includes power that's not being transferred through the drive system, and shows power that's being lost in the bending of the system and never reaching the drive train.
    so a sharp rise in the power as shown by the power pedal, includes the give of the system, so logically will be a sharper rise, but no more power to the system, just basically the power used to bend the pedal shaft a little, which will have more give, which will record a higher stat.
    ?
    also, these look great, everyone should buy these... (and sell your old ones for very cheap on EBay)

    My P3, which I ordered to replace my P2 which decided during the last 90% humidity day to stop working entirely (which now works fine again), came in entirely broken. Wouldn't stay turned on for longer than a few seconds, and would just constantly run through it's startup procedure, and then restart and loop through it - over and over. Couldn't get a firmware update - since it would only connect to the app for a few seconds and then restart. 4iiii offered zero troubleshooting help at all, just said to send it in for a warranty process. A horrible experience for a brand new meter. Luckily PowerMeterCity stepped up to help with a replacement.
    Unfortunately after this video, I wonder if this replacement is even worthwhile. Or if I should just swap my P2 for a pair of the pedals and not look back.
