Since Eugene refused to guest in the Moulin Rouge episode because at that time, this podcast is mainly about actual guilty pleasure films... he should come back and do ATLA or any animation films (since bingeing long shows is very time-consuming for them) now that the podcast has transitioned into more more open type of selections.
“I felt like I was 130 years back in time watching what the Lakota Sioux might have been saying at a point when they were being pushed, and they were being killed, and they were being asked to displace, and they were being given some form of compensation. This was a driving force for me in the writing of Avatar - I couldn’t help but think that if they [the Lakota Sioux] had had a time-window, and they could see the future… and they could see their kids committing suicide at the highest suicide rates in the nation… because they were hopeless, and they were a dead-end society - which is what is happening now - they would have fought a lot harder.” -James Cameron on his “inspiration” he took for his movie. Kind of a bummer how actual Native film makers and creators don’t get opportunities to tell our own Stories at a larger level but a white man who thought Native people experiencing literal genocide should’ve tried harder gets that chance and thinks he can tell them them for us.
Glad I saw this comment, was gonna write it myself if not, it only took a five second Google search before buying the tickets to figure out i didn't want to support this movie, and ended up not watching it - hoping the gang will do the same in the future tbh ❤️
Y'all PLEASE take into account the blatantly racist words from James Cameron himself about the Lakota - Sioux, on how he thinks they should have fought harder. This goes beyond a savior complex, and into the native exoticism/fantasy that may yt people have. The "I'm 1/64th Cherokee crowd," iykyk
Kelsey and Garrick are so right!! I’m so glad I saw it in 2D. The movie was so gorgeous and so cinematic, you don’t even need the dizzy-making 3D to be immersed. Seeing it on the big screen with the crazy surround sound already sets you up for a great time. 💙
I think it's worth seeing in 3D at least once since you can't really get that experience at home unless you spend hundreds to thousands of dollars on a setup to watch it on. Another thing is whether you want to see the Variable Frame Rate version or the normal 24fps version. I'd probably recommend to go see the 24fps version, but the HFR version is cool if you know you're going to see it that way.
Agreed!!!! and for those of us who will puke at the thought of anything 3D, I cant even ride in the passenger seat of a car without feeling sick, seeing it in 2D is the only way to go!
I legit dont understand the hype in 3d glasses. The times i used them all feel like a shittier experience bc i cant focus on the movie, but on the blue and red on the screen. Does it actually work for anyone?

Yasss Garrick…..LAST AIRBENDER! Truly one of the best tv shows period, anime or not. And the movie version was so disappointing 😔 The only reason I can think of that the movie version would be worth doing on this show is to see the reaction of someone who’s totally unfamiliar with the tv version. Would they think it’s actually good? 🧐
@@pamlegaspi Knives Out was soooo good that I was a little worried about Glass Onion, but it really delivered in such a way that makes me so excited for more movies. Daniel Craig really got to shine as Blanc and I am already dreaming up dream casts for the next one.
White savior complex for sure---I also noticed that the water Navi definitely had Maori influences, with the tattoos and the faces they made when they were ready to go to war, where they were sticking their tongues out. I was like "Oh, this is what happens during the haka."
YES! Like he straight up just slapped our Pukuna on his fictional characters, and the water tribe is 100% just us Māori, and even though the tribe leader(?) is played by a Māori actor its still weird to transplant an indigenous culture into a fictional world like that. Like, we should be telling our stories not some random white guy with no whakapapa. Indigenous people have experienced real trauma at the hands of colonisers and the effects are still very much being felt today. James can't just take what inspiration he wants from our cultures without giving anything in return, without fighting for us, without giving us our FUCKIN LAND BACK. It's weird that he felt comfy making this movie. And that's not to mention the disgusting racist statements he made about the Lakota people. If you dig deeper it gets pretty shady aye. Anywho, happy someone else is calling out his white saviour ass, tis weird and gross and yeah that's all immma say on it.
Adding to the colourism point; James Cameron said when he was making the first one that the naavi were based on the Lakota people. Being that it’s based on indigenous peoples in general. Just wish they put actual indigenous people on the cast; but can’t expect any less with a white saviour movie.
I think there was one indigenous American actor in the named cast. I think it was the actor who played Eytukan, Neytiri's dad. I'm just going off of memory here, so feel free to verify. Anyway, I completely agree. There should have been way more
For once, I am on the same page as Kelsey. I have never had interest in this franchise and still don't, even after being suckered into seeing the first one a few months ago. I get that it's visually stunning but the story does not at all keep me. Edit: Seriously, it'd be amazing if each episode of Guilty Pleasures was the same length of the movie being reviewed. I never get tired of listening to you guys and it oddly helps get me out of my head and into my body to listen while ice skating.
Kelsey!!! I didn’t love that take!! Tribes have specifically reached out to him over the years so they could give him insight and he denied and ignored at EVERY turn. Like EVERY turn. The way he has continued to ignoreeee the impact when given ways to work w ppl is the huge problem That being said, it’s fair it’s all like “made up” . I’m glad to watch this podcast cause I think I’ll sub watching it for this LOL I appreciate y’all!
As much as I loved the movie because it had a particular focus on animal rights and climate change (which James Cameron did research on), it did feel like a little bit disrespectful in terms of getting white actors to play characters that were clearly minority-coded
It’s kinda baffling to me that they think the most racist part of this movie is the dreds! That in it self is racist, it’s like James camren wanted to creat creature based on the most offensive and racist Native American stereotypes he could possibly think of, that’s why it’s racist not the hair
41:00 Garrick making points! Honestly, fictional characters make me cry! The ending of Stray made me bawl my eyes out and that was about a cat and robots! So did LOU and so many other games
Garrick referencing "member berries" & realizing he watches south park made me so excited lol love this podcast, never stop! I can't handle another podcast ending, or replacing people. This & 2 bears 1 cave give me something to look forward to after work on Monday's lol love you three
I did notice how Jake had dreads in this movie but in the first one his hair was straight and just braided. Could there be hair texture changes as he’s been there longer? Maybe but it was definitely a choice to make him seem even more Navi and the undertones of that is just a bit weird. Story wise it’s flawed for sure but it is a visually stunning film
24:45 maybe it’s a little off-topic but yes, Kelsey, I do the holding my breath thing!! Just to challenge myself to see if I could do it as long as the actors & I don’t think we’re alone, we just can’t be😂😂😂
That’s the main reason I’m not seeing the film. The first film is a perfect example of white savior complex and a horrible misrepresentation of indigenous cultures. While I’m not going to demonize people for seeing it, I will most definitely shit on James Cameron for being a terrible person all around 😅
The section of the video regarding the female characters - I gotta disagree. I really struggled to find that positive representation of women in this film. Honestly, the plot was pretty tired - pretty much boiled down to the basics of a nuclear family, with a strong masculine father teaching his boys to hunt and fish and fight, and the meek passive women being left to heal and cook dinner and look at pretty flowers. Sure, two female characters fought while pregnant - but pregnancy is not all a woman is good for. They can be just as impressive fighters, without needing that accessory of pregnancy to make an impact. It boiled them down to their most basic 'biological' function - to produce children. It was so disappointing that even in this incredibly futuristic, modern and fantastical film, those same outdated stereotypes of gender still had to apply. Men fight, and women stay home with the children. They even shot an incredibly uncomfortable male-gaze-esque slow-mo of a teenage female character emerging from the water, just to sexualise her in the eyes of a teenage boy. So much of the plot was just 'girls, you stay here. We'll go and fight.' Or the female characters being imprisoned by the big bad white man. It was depressingly un-progressive and although visually the film was stunning and groundbreaking, the plot was just tired and outdone.
zach saying the first avatar ushered in the era of 3d is spy kids 3d and sharkboy and lavagirl erasure but i am glad that he mentioned that it's not really a great movie and is instead all about the theater experience like a disney ride with some plot
One of these days, I'm gonna need Garrick to make Zach and Kelsey sit through a God of War: Ragnarok playthrough (or cutscene supercut) and then discuss lol
Kelsey I am totally with you on the holding your breath when they did! I wish I had breathed with them when they were doing the breathwork though. So cool!

I never thought about that, when seeing a long movie and knowing you're about to fall asleep, you just leave and see the rest of the movie during another day. You time it so you're only seeing the 2nd half of the movie you missed, not the 1st half you already saw, that's smart.
I would like more than anything rn for the guilty pleasure podcast to do an episode on the 2022 ‘The Menu’. I think they would have so much fun with it.
The first film was questionably re: racism, white savior complex, etc, and I could tell even back when the first one came out and we were just Starting to realize this sort of thing. Kate Winslet as a Polynesian queen, yikes. They're blue but coded "ethnic." I know y'all keep saying they're coded black because dreads but it's almost worse imo because it seems like they're just coded "ethnic." And that's what largely made me uncomfy in the first one. (I'm saying this as a white person, so anyone feel free to correct me.)
Just yesterday I was reminded of how much I love The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, a series that Netflix shafted after one season (and even if it is just one season, I HIGHLY recommend it if you love high fantasy and hand-crafted movie magic). Both Avatars 1 and 2 do very little for me from a storytelling angle because it feels like James Cameron feels more invested in polishing and showing the splendor of Pandora rather than exploring it from the lived-in perspective of its people. The latter is what Lord of the Rings, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Dark Crystal: AOR, etc. does, and I feel like that's what's helped them endure in fandom conscience.
I said in the theater that the Quaritch storyline didn’t need to be in this movie. I loved Spider and the actor and they could’ve done so much more with that character but kind of felt wasted since it was just to further Quaritch
To me it's crazy that people say Avatar has no iteresting lore, while at the same time people literally ''ended their lives'' saddly because they would never be able to experience this alien world. I have no proof that is has anything to do with liking the movie, but I think a lot of people who loved nature and animals when Avatar came out, really found an opening to sci-fi in cinema thanks to it.
I know you want to feature films or tv that was created recently because it's topical so people will search it, but focusing more on older films or tv would make it easier for those of us who want to listen but don't want things to be spoiled for us. I only listen to episodes for stuff I haven't seen yet unless it is about a movie I know I don't care about at all, but I do like your podcast.
Made up blue people, yes. But inspired by many many cultures and native tribes. So thank you Zach for pointing out the Kate winslet point. As a pasefika person, I was disappointed.
Okay already at the beginning i have to take a second to say that the 3D was AMAZING. Not too much, not too little. It was awesome. And i agree that the extra frames made some of it look weird, but idk I’m getting more used to it with more things coming out with the extra frames.
Unsolicited Movie Opnion: I'm blind so all the graphics and cinematography - from what little I can see of them - mean nothing to me. The audio description did its job and painted a nice picture, but I was disappointed in the actual story. I get that it's setting up the other movies, but the main villain's only motivation is revenge and I just expected more, you know? I figured the immortal cerebral whale fluid would be a bigger plot point and motivating factor than it actually was, since it wasnt mentioned until halfway (?) through. Fantastic world building but the colonization/revenge seeking/whale hunting got old very quickly. I just expected it to be bigger than it was.
Garrick missed on the Ragnarok explanation. The kid causes so many problems and half the game is Kratos going around fixing it afterwards. It’s more accurate to say its a story about Kratos learning to let Atreus make mistakes instead of controlling him. None of it would have happened if Atreus just chilled out
Finally saw the movie last night so listening this morning, and THE FRAME RATE! Other than commenting on Sigorney Weaver f*cking a tree and Kimmy being Tresus, that was the first thing I commented on - drove me crazy
I need you guys to do a kaleidoscope review ASAP ! Wife loved it and i hated the ending ... I need some honest takes from yall !! Loved the avatar review will DEF see it in the theater now.
Does LA still do theater showings of the cult classic, The Room? Because if so, you need to go together as a full experience and then describe it on the pod. Seriously. Seeing that movie in theaters surrounded by people who know what to yell and when to throw spoons and all that jazz is one of my favorite theater-going experiences, and to hear your reactions would be hilarious. A local co-op theater used to show it every year here, but they sadly closed in 2019. So I want to live vicariously through you. Also, when you go you should dress in track suits. If you've seen The Room, you know. The next week you could watch the movie Disaster Artist, which is the biopic about Tommy Wassau, the mastermind behind the beauty that is the best bad movie of all time. It is THE definition of guilty pleasure.
James Cameron is 100% a bit controversial, but he did do his research in terms of climate change & animal rights advocacy. He was actually the operator & one of the creators for the Deep Sea Challenger, and was (I believe) the 3rd person to reach the bottom of the Marianas Trench in it. He spends a lot of time with ocean RVs and the like, too. Kinda crazy that he is able to make these movies at the same time
Garrick saying that Avatar is about a small boy named Aang is the truest words ever spoken
we need episodes where garrick gets to show everyone his animated shows/movies! i bet keith and eugene would love to come on for that

I completely agree. I've wanted something like that for a long time. I think Garrick and Keith would vibe talking about animated shows.
The fact that no one (especially Zach) doesn't realize that Spider is more or less Tarzan baffles me.
Don’t forget that the original plot is basically Pocahontas
He literally runs on weird vine things in the trees. I was like where is the phill collins sound track.
THATS what he reminds me of.. i couldnt place it but i was thinking.. why have i seen this character before
Garrick, please never apologise for bringing animation into the conversation!!! I always look forward to it

Kelsey was very correct with that guilty pleasure. Like just watch the last Samurai or any other white saviour movie and it's the same
I always hold my breath during underwater scenes!! You're not alone, Kelsey!
Thank you!! It made no sense why he endangered the water navi
wait this isn't the plot of pocahontas 2
I said in the theater that the Quaritch storyline didn’t need to be in this movie. I loved Spider and the actor and they could’ve done so much more with that character but kind of felt wasted since it was just to further Quaritch
Not the point of the podcast and with all due respect to my husband and Sequoia, Garrick has never looked hotter. This outfit really works.
I already know this is gonna be goood
Please watch Kubo and the Two Strings for the podcast one day! It’s amazing, but I couldn’t get anyone to watch with me because it’s in stop motion 😢
Kubo is soooooo good. You may also enjoy The Book of Kells if you liked Kubo
I bawled at the end. Gorgeous film
Garrick is so right about God of War. Amazon is supposed to make a series based off the games.
Huh, i don't agree that kitty sounded like a 60 year old. I mean, i didn't even realize that she was not voiced by a younger person
Yeah, I knew ahead of time, but I was able to look past it for most of the film so I think it worked alright
Man! Kelsey is the most to 30 y old teenager i have ever heard talking.
I only ever watch 1 movie in 3D and it was a mistake. Watching movies in 3D is not worth the money ever.
did zach ever get his other croc?
Indigenous communities are boycotting this film
Kelsey saying she doesn't like blockbuster action because it's traditional when she's a FF fan... 😂
100% this was just the longest cutscene i've ever seen.
Happy New Year, you guys!🎉
Made up blue people, yes. But inspired by many many cultures and native tribes. So thank you Zach for pointing out the Kate winslet point. As a pasefika person, I was disappointed.
I know y’all don’t really talk about shows but I desperately need to hear Garrick rant about his love for avatar the last airbender 😭
Kiwi here - it’s definitely not a slur, but thanks for the caution
Okay already at the beginning i have to take a second to say that the 3D was AMAZING. Not too much, not too little. It was awesome. And i agree that the extra frames made some of it look weird, but idk I’m getting more used to it with more things coming out with the extra frames.
I feel like Jordan Peels Get Out was in some ways talking about Avatar....
I literally just saw it yesterday so I am looking forward to this one
Unsolicited Movie Opnion:
I'm blind so all the graphics and cinematography - from what little I can see of them - mean nothing to me.
James Cameron grew up in chippawa, right next to Niagara Falls. Inspired haha
Love hearing everyone’s “pleasure”
Garrick missed on the Ragnarok explanation. The kid causes so many problems and half the game is Kratos going around fixing it afterwards. It’s more accurate to say its a story about Kratos learning to let Atreus make mistakes instead of controlling him. None of it would have happened if Atreus just chilled out
Kelsey honestly reminds me of a Gen Z version of Teeter from Yellowstone. Her personality is on fire!
I love and appreciate the God of War references because I was thinking the same thing!
Finally saw the movie last night so listening this morning, and THE FRAME RATE!
Other than commenting on Sigorney Weaver f*cking a tree and Kimmy being Tresus, that was the first thing I commented on - drove me crazy
I finally watched way of water yesterday so now I can finally watch this episode😂
Kelsey I do the holding breath with the characters thing too 😅
Yessss Rick. ALTA is definitely superior
Also spider looks like a 2016 era soundcloud rapper
58:23 Sounds a lot like what they do in 3D animation but with real footage!
kelsey fell asleep during the movie & I fell asleep during this ep lmao
James Cameron is 100% a bit controversial, but he did do his research in terms of climate change & animal rights advocacy. He was actually the operator & one of the creators for the Deep Sea Challenger, and was (I believe) the 3rd person to reach the bottom of the Marianas Trench in it. He spends a lot of time with ocean RVs and the like, too. Kinda crazy that he is able to make these movies at the same time
