It sounds a lot like a 60’s Marshall to me. If people don’t like it, then they just don’t like 60’s Marshalls. It doesn’t have the depth and sparkle of a JTM45, but it’s half the price. I’m sure it could benefit from a speaker upgrade but otherwise it seems great. The flubby low end was part of the original Marshall tone. I know some people don’t like it, but if you want Hendrix/Cream/Kossoff tone, you won’t get there with a tight sound.
You also won't get there with something you can stand next to in a 12X12 modern house room, without deafening yourself that is. Rest of your comment is right on the money. This sounds enough like it without the volume to be instantly relatable.
People talk s*** on these amps.. I'm telling you man I've been through all of them 45 years of playing this amps and sick as hell on its own if you want more Distortion throw pedal in front of it. it takes them real good badass amps.
4:50 - Yup, that's exactly what the tilt control is. It's like you've jumped the normal and bright channels. The tilt pot lets you mix 'em. As an old style Marshall lover I'm going to have to get me one of these. Most likely a head, probably the 20. :)
Kind of tired of the Marshall haters. I have the head version of this and it's great. But do agree this amp needs to be cranked to get the best...and it's LOUD! Also agree the speaker in the combo isn't the best. The main problem it would seem is that the gain structure is far cleaner than the archetypal 'rock' Marshall sound of the 70's./80's. It's a cleaniish amp to be fair and meant to be retro. We'd all luv a jtm. But they're 3or 4 times the price in the uk.
Bryan Clarke same here on the haters! It’s definitely aimed at those interested in more vintage sounds but it’s got a fair bit more gain available than old plexi types. Time was that you just couldn’t get overdrive without cranking the amp all the way hence why people often use attenuators with um these days. The origin seems to give similar gain level to a cranked early master volume like a JMP , the predecessor to the 800.
Just want to add my main amp (made by a different company) blew a valve recently so my Origin head has become the number one. It has excelled in the area it was, designed for. Huge headroom with pedals. Got me out of a deep hole gigging wise. Really cuts through the mix. No offence to John but audio here doesn't reflect the amps real sonic capabilities. For five-hundred British it's a true bargain!
the tilt control basically replaces the bright/normal inputs with a pot that not only allows you to choose bright, dark, or jump the inputs like a plexi, but with the pot gives you much more flexibility in how much of each. all the way left is "normal" all the way right is bright, noon is balanced mix like jumping inputs on a plexi, but it gives ya all the stuff in between as well. probably my favorite feature next to the amazing old school tone it produces.

Just bought this amp used in mint condition for $400, could not pass it up. Sounds best with my Tele, Strat single coils and also amazing with my Hagstrom Swede LP. It's a great pedal / tone building amp, perfect to dial in all your guitars due to the single channel application
Isn't 'tilt' just a blend between the two standard marshall amp inputs?? So it's pre-jumped as a circuit and all the way clockwise is completely high channel and all the way anti clockwise is all normal channel.

Man I was thinking about picking up a tone master. Been playing a Deluxe for years and just wanted something lighter. But man I am so digging that tone.
I own this and it’s a great amp, especially with a les Paul. I’ve owned a jtm45, vintage modern, jcm 800 and a dsl but this is my favourite. You have to set it up right though. It only sounds good in full power mode. It’s not a bedroom amp, it needs to be played loud to get the best sound. I find the best setting is running everything at 12 o’clock but the bass on 3. I run the gain at max and control the distortion from the guitar volume. I wire my les Pauls with 50s wiring and rarely run the guitar volume over 8. Maxing our a les Paul volume makes it fuzzy and less clear in a band mix. It’s an awesome vintage Marshall sound but you need to know what that is as it’s unlike the tight bottom end of Morden high gain amps.
when its in the low wattage mode, the low end is not going to stay together as well. on the max headroom setting, it is much tighter (at least in my exp)
Find me a schematic and I'll tell you exactly what that "Tilt" control does. It appears to be a blend pot with a bright cap on one side, considering the cascading gain ala JMP/JCM. The first 12AX7 isn't parallel like a JTM/Bassman jumper'd with a patch cable.. I'm happy Marshall made an affordable amp based on the classics. While you can get some awesome sounds out of the 50W combo, I think either the Origin 20w or 50w head into a cab of choice is a better option. Another thought: run a Barber "Direct Drive" pedal into a Fender Super Reverb. Trust me, it's a religious experience. 😉
Would you recommend the Origin or the Blues Junior? I know Marshall and Fender have such different sounds and I prefer the Fender tone a lot more than Marshall but something about this amp specifically draws me towards it. Also with clean tone setting of the Origin and a reverb pedal I think it can rival the clean of Fender. What are your thoughts on both against each other and which would you recommend.

yeah that would work. I just ordered a friedman dirty shirley overdrive to run in front of my origin 50 for fun. The amp is an outstanding pedal platform. Just be careful with that tilt control or it will rip your head off.
This is kind of misleading considering he has a Saucy Box HC in his signal chain. How much of the sound he gets is from the pedal, and how much is from the amp?

Lovely sounding amp, but I'm not sure if it's the crappy speakers on my laptop or what, but there is a boomy kind of reverby thing happening in the vid. Maybe it's the room you're recording in. Not sure, but even when you speak, the sound seems to reverberate. Weird.
That’s what the FX loop is for. I’m gonna get a Dano spring reverb pedal (that has real springs!) and put it through there. I’ve never had an amp that has an FX loop until I got this.
Great playing brother! Amp has some cool features but the digital reverb makes it a no sell. It would be more desirable if they just made it without it if they're just going to throw in some shitty digital verb.
love to see that John is using a guitar strap in a sensible way! I've never understood why almost everyone tries to play guitar down on their thighs...
Eh... to each his own..It’s definitely much more comfortable at the hips for me and many others, and it’s never been comfortable playing at chest height. Comfort is sensible.
Could be the camera compression/limiting, there is a TON of compression/limiting in the camera, listen to the ambience come roaring in when he shuts the volume off. I think that is what makes many say this Marshall doesn't sound like a Marshall. I like the sound, the high gain sounds ok, like a compressed Marshall , the clean is unknown to me because of the camera leveling everything out so much, it sounded solid state clean. Seems like it is stuggling for headroom but again, without being there and the whole camera thing theres no way to gauge it very well.
@@premierguitar Auto volume or manual volume on XA20? Manual would be ideal, but you would of had to change it very often during this which is highly impractical. It would remove any auto leveling though.
Always manual on channel 2 with Royrer R121 input. We do several "max volume" tests to make sure whatever tweaking and pedals engaged don't burn the signal. Once that's established, we don't really touch anything. Channel 1 is on auto (that captures John's audio), and yes, we eliminate all channel 1 audio while he's playing so what you're hearing is straight from the Royer. Thanks for tuning in, Evan.
It's a usable amp with some good sounds in it, but they missed the mark on this one, imo. Another flavor of the month, not a future classic. Firstly, players are tired of price point-compromised products that need upgrades. Enough of that. I'll just pay more for a great sounding stock amp. On this one, it's just too much trouble to tweak up a workable sound, it's annoying. And since it sports a lot of clean headroom which is good for pedals, they really should have added a nice reverb. Then it would be way more useful as a general purpose amp in today's world. I would even get two of them for a portable stereo rig. You could go straight into both or slave one out after the fx loop with echo/chorus and such.
am so sick of gibsons same old sound, but this les paul reminded me of barry baileys marshall tone from atlanta rythm section,...the perfect band........
best strat an origin video i think,...on youtube..leave the dam les pauls alone a while, there mushy noise if not careful, might as well be playin with a flamethrower..........
I want to love thess amps but I just can't. I've had a few opportunities to play the marshall origins and I just think they don't sound as good as everyone says says they do and I don't think they sound like vintage marshall (though I've never actually played a vintage marshall and have only heard them through videos and im probably completely wrong.) I think marshall should eventually do a revamp of this series like they did to the DSL and make them sound more like what you hear on old rock records from the late 60's and early 70s.

I only got one today, love it so much,it's a bit weird at first but it sounds really good
Lovely sounding amp, but I'm not sure if it's the crappy speakers on my laptop or what, but there is a boomy kind of reverby thing happening in the vid. Maybe it's the room you're recording in. Not sure, but even when you speak, the sound seems to reverberate. Weird.
How is he able to max out the master with it being crazy loud?
Love the videos from the other side of town, John! #southnastyrules
best origin review on youtube pretty much, lose that friggin reverb though.........
what effects pedals are you using? What is he using? o.O
How loud is the 1 watt setting?
Perfect for a small room or apartment
All knobs right and at 11!!
Is there any other way?
Is that your 54 goldtop??
A bit of a gear noob, do these work with extended range?
This amp certainly looks like something from the 60's, wishing it had reverb though.
Paul Simmons No reverb !? They could have put digital reverb in it for penny or two more, literally.
Agree, the digital reverb sounds good and for pennys this could have been a great buy.
There is no reverb in this amp.
There is no reverb 😂 read before u complain
love to see that John is using a guitar strap in a sensible way! I've never understood why almost everyone tries to play guitar down on their thighs...
Because it looks cool
You're watching the wrong people
Jimmy page ?
But it's upside down! 😭
Eh... to each his own..It’s definitely much more comfortable at the hips for me and many others, and it’s never been comfortable playing at chest height. Comfort is sensible.
Let that Goldtop rip!!
sick playing style
Are we hearing Marshall or Pedals & Marshall
Has Rebecca ever sat on that couch and where? Asking for a friend.
*Satchel*
I got me the dsl40cr it’s awesome also😜
How is the low end in that? My old fender red knob just took a shit on me, I LOIVED the low end that thing had, would shake the room.
Anybody know what the last Tele style guitar manufacturer is ?
Kiesel
Could be the camera compression/limiting, there is a TON of compression/limiting in the camera, listen to the ambience come roaring in when he shuts the volume off. I think that is what makes many say this Marshall doesn't sound like a Marshall. I like the sound, the high gain sounds ok, like a compressed Marshall , the clean is unknown to me because of the camera leveling everything out so much, it sounded solid state clean. Seems like it is stuggling for headroom but again, without being there and the whole camera thing theres no way to gauge it very well.
Royer R 121 > XLR > Canon XA20 input/preamp > FCPX > Universe
I think it sounds great in my ears. Thanks.
Question: Can this amp do really big, loud, clean tones? Sorta like an SRV type tone?
Yes absolutely! If you have it on 50 and roll the volume back a little and boost the gain it does it
I’m new to Amps and I’ve got an Incredibly loud buzz on mine... anyone know what might be the cause?
It's normal, every single amp has a buzz, a compressor or noise gate might lessen it :)
Nice amp!!
Sounds unreal
Can i play metal music with this amp?
Would probably sound good if you pair it with a distortion pedal with a thicker distortion
It's not 0.5 watt on low. I'ts actually 5, 10 and 50 watts.
this guy knows how to make a guitar bite an attack, instead of metal,an shred shit..like blackmore a little..........
best strat an origin video i think,...on youtube..leave the dam les pauls alone a while, there mushy noise if not careful, might as well be playin with a flamethrower..........
I had Origin 20. Much better than DSL...
Nice Kiesel!
Eso suena Deluxe bro!!
I have a couple of extra guitar stands if you can't find any in your town. 🤣
You have to watch it on full power, it'll blow your strap right off! 🤣
Will wait for mods to fix the sound
"clean business" :)
