Most of the stone walls in new england date from around the 1840's during the merino sheep craze. Deforestation was so bad that farmers were forced to pile up rocks instead of building fences with wood.

This area could possible be what is called a Ceremonial Stone Landscape a term used by the United Southern and Eastern Tribes who made a resolution in 2007 asking for these sites to be recognized, in the resolution they said this about CSL.
"within the ancestral territories of the USET Tribes there exist sacred ceremonial stone landscapes and their stone structures which are of particular cultural value to certain member Tribes;"
"for thousands of years before the immigration of Europeans, the medicine people of the USET Tribal ancestors used these sacred landscapes to sustain the people's reliance on Mother Earth and the spirit energies of balance and harmony"
"whether these stone structures are massive or small structures, stacked, stone rows, or effigies, these prayers in stone are often mistaken by archaeologists and State Historic Preservation Officers (SHPOs) as the efforts of farmers clearing stones for agricultural or wall building purposes"

This is a similar site located in Pennsylvania. OSL dating was conducted and the results showed the cairns were erected around 2500 years ago. w.wiki/84bj

@@mysteriousmountains Here in TN I have run across stone piles many times. I just assumed that they were from farmers clearing fields.

@@tombombadil3185 This is a great presentation that shows ceremonial stone landscapes are found all along the Appalachian Mountains. There are thousands of years of history in North America and we are only taught the last couple of hundred.

Bog burials are being discovered, as a paleolithic traditional, and markers for these sites are usually like them piled up stones.🤔

These are all over the South, some were used during the Civil War to create lines that were easily defended, some were to create fireproof breaks, and some were used as home foundations.

Some were possibly created by the Native Americans as well. A great book to learn more about Ceremonial Stone Landscape is, Stone Prayers: Native American Constructions of the Eastern Seaboard by Dr. Curtiss Hoffman.
