Funny, I harvest lithium cells from our local recycling centre, I've been building packs for many years (and machines that use them) totalling almost ten thousand cells for a variety of applications and the prices I pay for packs that yield a worthwhile gamble on used cells is around AU 10-15 cents per cell. The final test pass rate increases that cost to around 20 cents as about half the cells are useless (dead) and I grade them into four application categories. The best cells that retain over 80% of their capacity constitute only about 5% of the total number harvested, most of those that pass testing have degraded to between 60-80% of their original capacity. My sources are mostly from laptop batteries, cordless tools like vacuum cleaners and other power tools. Very few of these are more than 6 years old and will have had much less frequent use than any EV, so I would never ever buy a used EV for anything more than it's scrap value. The battery failure cost is really only a minor part of the failure risk. Even worse are electronic system failures, everything from the touch screen interface to BMS, ESC's and charge controllers, BCM, regen controllers, steering systems, hvac, driver assist systems... they are all built as cheap throwaway garbage that cannot be repaired and require only authorised specialist (licensed) stealers to work on. As these parts become obsolete overnight after a model run passes the warranty period, any failure beyond that point almost guarantees the vehicle will be scrapped with even minor failures. This is part of the grand plan, ideally they want to churn new cars at a much higher rate in order to generate more revenue for industry and government, at the end users expense.

It's a very predictable tactic. They pushed people towards diesel on the basis of economy/cost and, believe it or not, environmental benefits over petrol. As soon as enough mugs adopted them the duty on diesel was raised, erasing any fuel cost savings at a stroke. Then the legislation began, emissions in particular, making the cost of manufacture and maintenance even higher as the fuel systems had to become ever more complex.
I didn't fall for it then and I'm certainly not going to fall for the obvious EV fraud either. All EV's are designed to do is destroy the automobile industry and force us out of our cars. Here in America, families like to take long road trips. We have a lot of good highways and beautiful scenic routes to enjoy. It seems to me that to take such trips in an "ICE" car, requires no more consideration than daily use. This is not the case with EVs. Attempting to take a road trip in an EV demands far more consideration. To put it as simply as possible, an ICE vehicle will take you and your family to your destination but with an EV, you will be "bringing" your EV more than it will be taking you. You will have to nurse it along, worry about this and that and spend a lot of precious vacation time waiting.

The full length glass sunroof was a nice feature. The ride was fine but I missed the engine sound (I've always had, and will always choose manual transmission cars because of the enjoyment it gives motoring). What I absolutely hated about the Tesla was the huge screen, and how often the driver had their eyes off the road ahead for unacceptably long periods of time in operating the 'controls'. For people that need to use reading glasses the screen would be a massive problem and safety risk. Also, the thought of driving at night with that horrible screen glaring away is a no no. Bring back proper switches and increase safety! So, there is no way that I'd buy one of these milk floats. If you can afford to buy a new EV, you can afford the fuel for a proper stress free and much safer car.

Yes that happens. The ICE has well over 100 years head start and our understanding of the tech is very good. There are two factors that affect the life of an ICE: design flaws and natural wear and tear. Engine tech is more complicated these days but the basics still apply. If you faithfully maintain an ICE it has the potential to last for a very long time. In your example: I presume that it was a blown head gasket. What caused it? Design flaw or engine overheat. Engine overheat because the fluids were allowed to get too low -- oil and coolant. Change your oil and check your coolant frequently!

Currently, it has about 55k miles on it and likely will last me for as long as I am able to drive. It does great in snow and ice as well as in sand and mud, so it's very versatile. It does
not care how warm or how cold it is and just hums along doing its job. There is NO WAY that I would even consider trading it in on some POS EV. Not gonna happen! As to the
other 25% of my driving needs, they are met by my 2006 Ford F-150 4x4 pickup truck, with around 52k miles on it and starting, stopping, running, and driving like a new truck.
Its 4.6L V-8 engine gets the job done and gives me 17+ mpg. Not great but not that bad for a vehicle with its capabilities. Neither of these vehicles can or will be replaced by

With the ageing batteries it will soon be the case they are bought for the mot and cost less than £1000.

As you know right now house and contents insurance is currently obscenely expensive and some just cannot afford it at all. As for battery degradation as far as I know batteries of any description degrade with age alone (I stand to be corrected of course) and EV batteries are far more likely to degrade by all of the issues you have quoted. Now I have seen quite a few Teslas and other brands around where I live and I have to smile to myself when I think of how that person is going to react when they want to replace their abomination.

Over the years I’ve been driving I have come across some innovative ideas for improving the efficiency of ICE vehicles. One which really piqued my interest was Firestorm Spark Plugs, developed my Robert Krupa. I followed the development of these plugs for quite some time but in the end the idea came to nothing despite all the proven benefits they clearly demonstrated in all the tests I’d seen. It turns out that the oil industry didn’t want a spark plug that lifted fuel efficiency to extremely high levels and plugs that lasted many years longer than ordinary plugs as it would affect industry profits, and that’s the problem. The oil and motor industry is its own worst nightmare when it comes to looking at improving its image in an environmental sense.
Enter the EV con. We now have what in my mind is a very devious attempt at shaping the world economy in accordance to a small group of sociopaths that claim the world will be a better place if we all bend over and take the ridiculous fraud of EVs right up out fiscal rear ends when in reality EVs are far more wasteful than a REALLY efficient ICE vehicle. It’s simply madness.

Your traditional lead acid battery for your ICE vehicle depending on who makes it can lasts on average between 4 years and up to 7 years in rare cases. Yes I have had a few last close to 7 years so its possible with certain brands. You can do simple SOH checks on a lead acid battery with six cells and its not that expensive to replace. However a used EV battery pack of thousands of cells is going to cause you grief, usually sooner than later and it will not be a cheap replacement.

Same goes for used values for Hybrids but in spadeloads.
Many don't see it yet though: small batteries constantly battered often with not very good battery management or cooling, substandard on board chargers and electric power control units straight out of China.
But give it time and many used Hybrids will become unsellable
Some of the worst Hybrids are already known to be prone to crapping out quickly
Need to very clearly understand what is ( and is not...) covered by those makers warranties
A BMW PHEV battery for example is covered for 6 years but only for a misery 60,000 miles.
After which you are on risk for a new €12 000 battery plus fitting
Others will cover 100,000 miles but will only do work which takes battery up to 70% of original capacity,
Why? Because they know there is a wall of Hybrid battery misery coming down the pipe.
