Very good clear information for a beginner like me. Many of the other model railway channel videos are presented by guys that have been into the hobby all there lives and I tend to get a little lost
I always enjoy your updates and absolutely brilliant again. But constructively, the layout is very clean. Reminds me of a hard days night movie where they kept commenting on how the grandfather was very clean. I mean this in the fact that the track is weathers but it’s so uniform with no random rails and debris around it’s backfires. Also buildings look as if everything was build in the same year. Around the station that wall look superb but other things are just very clean… but thank you for a great update and look forward to the next update!
Hi, thanks. And thank you for being honest but constructive. I appreciate it, honestly I do. I’m really glad you enjoy what I try to do with my layout. About the cleanness. I try to weather buildings using subtle techniques, as I’ve seen some horrific over weathering of buildings in the past. I use pastel and powders mainly. It gives me more control. I like control 😆 I’m a perfectionist…for good and for bad. These give realistic tones, build up of surface weathering streaking etc. i often will from photos of actual buildings, especially on my scratch builds where it represents an actual building I have seen… however as I’ve said many times over the years a lot of the layout is under decent lighting which lightens the effect on camera. Plus the camera naturally lightens it too. So sadly from a distance it does like more uniformed Than it actually is away from a camera lens. I have had some guys visit, Ie Everard junction on more than one occasion, and he was surprised by how different it appears in ‘real life’. I’m not going to over weather it just for TH-cam, Ie put extra makeup on it just for the cameras 😆 as it’s away from the camera 99% of the time. The track weathering. I take your point. I did go back to the station and give it a more heavier tone, using photos from Edinburgh Waverley circa 1986. I did add in large areas of oil spill where locos and units would sit. It’s a matt finish, perhaps I’ll add in some satin top coat to make it look more oily. Again, the camera lighting annoyingly removes some of the subtle effects. But I take your point and will address some of the more generic areas. With a layout that has a circumference of over 70ft it’s a time consuming labour of love. I tend to pride myself on sound, finely engineered and detailed presentation, Ie no wonky train, exposed edges, stuff that’s clearly not square (Ie my scratch builds are properly made). The whole layout is designed (as far as I can) to be robust and well engineered. I suppose that’s just the way I am. I don’t think there are many layouts out there as exacting in their fit and finish as this. Even my good friend Everard junction envy’s my build quality, fit and finish. Coming from him, that’s a decent compliment 😆 The appearance, looks good in my eyes. The colours look good to me. The weathering effective. But we all have different eyes. And we see things differently. It’s all about getting the time to work on the layout. Hopefully more progress can be filmed soon. Thanks again. Dave

This clearly shows just show how much work is involved in creating a model railway. I also thought your opening with reference to Captain Tom, was very impressive. In addition, it is quite brave of you to rip up existing track and start again.
Cheers Alan. I am not in a rush to get the layout finished, so I decided I needed to tweak the track formation at this section of the layout. A bit frustrating ripping up perfectly functional track, but the new set up is a lot more flexible for increasing the operation of the layout. So I’m happy :-) cheers. Dave
I went through the same scenario Dave. It hurts to remove work but providing the result is better it can be very satisfying. One thing perhaps is that when showing the flexitrack it might have been good to point out that the gaps in the sleeper webbing are intended to go on the inside of the curve thus giving easier laying and a better finish. Nice to see some progress on the layout. In building a layout, perfection is key, in both track and scenery. It looks harsh, trashing already ballasted track, but in the end, the result will be worth it. Looking forward to the retaining wall on that TMD area. Massive job, but it will make a massive improvement to the overall look of that section. Keep up the good work there ...
Cheers Mark. Yeah pain now for pleasure later is my view on ripping stuff up to rebuild. I’m happier with the positioning of the track now. The wall will be a large job, but as always I will take my time and get it done on my own time. A lot of brick work to paint!!

Thanks Kev. Yeah it took me a while. I'll be spending the next couple of years building up this end of the layout, as well as finishing off the area at the front of the depot etc. Lots to do....not rushing it. @@DeanPark Indeed I sure intend to do just that .. Agree to take your time think it through and plan ahead.. I'm about to move house and I have some prime loft space to exploit myself, and so yourself, Richard of EJ and Charlie of Chadwick are a massive source of inspiration.
I can imagine the difficult decisions involved in whether or not to re-track when you had already ballasted such a major section of the layout. But it's as well to do it at this stage, before you had fully committed to the new scenery, at least. Ah well, it's now beginning to fall into place. Great work, and as clearly and succinctly described, as we have come to expect. Great to see trains already running over the new sections. And a touching tribute to Captain Tom - lovely model planes.
Excellent update, as always. 66s, I have bachmann EWS 66135, bachmann Freightliner Heavy Haul 66610, bachmann First GBRf 66725 Sunderland, and hattons GBRf large logo blue 66789. I do love the detail on the hattons one, although it likes to derail at one point on my layout for no reason, and the lights are a bit awkward to use. So probably my favourite is the one named after my local football team. Next up will either be a standard GBRf livery one, Pride of GBRailfreight, Evening Star, a DRS /4, or a freightliner /5 in power haul livery. I'm actually considering doing some track modifications to Ashbrooke Central, to convert the inner running line (down main/down bypass) to switchable DC/DCC operation, so I can test DC locos on the layout instead of on a random piece of track or elsewhere. Problem is, I'll need to rip up a set of points I've already ballasted and glued so I can fit insulating fishplates. Modifying the wiring shouldn't be too bad, does mean I'll need 2 sets of bus wires going round the layout to power it though. I do really like those oxford mk3as, tempted to go run mine tonight now...
Nice collection of sheds there! Yes i like the Oxford mk3. Ok it’s not perfect, the couplers are flimsy and some of the liveries are wrong but over all it’s a lovely item.
Another superb video Dave, great for a novice like me to see what can be achieved. I have a number of Class 66's, which I find suitable for a more modern layout. I have two Bachmann's (both "Malcolm Logistic's"), and both are excellent runners, simply don't miss a beat. Down here in Perth, Australia its becoming harder and harder to pick up the kit you want, simply forced to bring it in directly from UK - for example those relay boxes and rodding kits are simply not available here.
Good project Dave to remodel the West end to give you improved alignments and operational flexibility ... looks great and well constructed as always! I’ve managed to resist introducing any Class 66’s onto my layout ... although having commuted aboard the Cross Country HST’s many many times, I’ve been seriously tempted to have a rake of the SD Mark 3’s ... just about resisted so far! Good luck with the next projects 👍
Hi, yeah I resisted... but this came to me as a gift, so I’ll make an exception 😆 I’ve some modern day stock in my collection, it allows me to do some modern running sessions. I have the scotrail mk3 SD. Good models... once you switch over the noisy wheels they come with.
Hi Dave brilliant update the new track work looks awesome can't wait to see all detail round that area.👍My view on the class 66 I did have a Bachmann one many years ago just about the same time you started building your layout and I couldn't fault it great loco but sadly due to personal issues and roof problems I binned and sold all the stock. Now that I started the layout again I may get another but I'm more for the British locos ie 37 47 58 60 57. Out the three manufacturers I pick bachmann all day long. I agree, overall bachmann are too. But their stuff is over priced and they don’t release much these days! Hornby have a far better range, but sadly it’s often rushed out and has errors.
Nice one Dave, enjoyed that. I thought you were gonna make a mini Millerhill on the layout for a moment. Having a shed on the layout would be slightly weird, considering the time period Dean Park is set in but as far I'm aware, if it's your layout, it's your rules. I'm really looking forward to see what the new changes and your projects add to what is already a very impressive layout. Thanks for sharing.
Dave a great layout update, regarding the class 66 I think you called it correctly, the Bachmann version is the best allrounder on the market, I have 4, 2 factory sound fitted and 2 of the original 8 pin versions which I have fitted with the Hornby TTS sound but I am planning to upgrade the speaker at some point.
Great video as always Dave. I also have the Tom Moore 66, which brings me upto 19 class 66s. My favourite being 66711 "Sence" in GBRf Aggregate livery. Currently in the process of installing Zimo sound decoders and Illuminated Model light boards in all 19 of them. My older ones with 8pin deocders are also being upgraded with 21pin PCBs for better functionality as and when I can get my hands on them.

Re soldering.. I think its always worth pointing out to use the best cored solder you can. Makes it so much easier. Using non cored solder is almost impossible without lashings of rosin flux.. in my experience. 👍😄
They use "pad printing" to apply the markings to the model. It's sort of like ink stamping in concept, but the image is engraved (photo etch or laser) onto a flat plate. Ink is squeegeed into the engraving and they use a soft silicone pad to pick up the image from the plate and then transfer it to the model. The pad is soft enough to conform to the detail on the model and they use static charges to "encourage" the ink to transfer completely.

I've got 2 Class 66s, ones by Bachmann [66406 or 7?] and other by Hornby [66185 'DP World London Gateway']. Both good runners but 66185 is lighter and therefore when I tried to get 66185 to haul about 16 or 17 wagons of various sizes it couldn't do it, the maximum I 66185 to haul was 10-12 wagons. I haven't tested my 66/4 yet but I'll get round to it. Thanks for the great videos Dave.
Looking good Dave. Always enjoy the updates. Just a thought - but to add some variety - have you considered doing something different with your retaining walls? For example, bring a grassed embankment down at around 50 degrees from the upper level and then where it gets close to the lower track, add your retaining wall at that lower height. Putting my civil engineering hat on, this is probably how it'd be approached in real life - to cut down on the required height of the wall needing to be built.
Good update Dave layout is coming on really well Regarding the 66 it is a very nice model I myself have all 3 currently produced avaliable versions that are on the market and I’m very Happy with all of them, in my opinion while the hattons one is more detailed and I do have a very different outlook on them now compared to what I thought of the at first as I really didn’t like them at all however that has changed since I own one now I would say it is still the bachmann one that is still my personal favourite mainly because it didn’t have any issues with it also it is in a livery that hattons didn’t produce, I also got it fairly cheaply, when it comes to the hornby one i bought that one because it was being sold quite cheaply and it was in a special livery and the hattons one was because the price had been discounted to £119. My models are hornby 66705 golden jubilee, bachmann 66411 in Stobart livery and my hattons one is 66762 in GBRf
History will show the Hattons one was a bit of a flop, which probably caused Hattons more hassle than it was worth, especially getting in to conflict with Bachmann over! Bachmann one wins!
@@DeanPark your probably right there, although it does seem to be hit and miss with the hattons ones, I have only had a couple of issues that I have managed to rectify myself and it has been a fine model since so hopefully I won’t have anymore issues, as for the bachmann one as you rightly say it does win hands down and when I can hopefully get a layout set up properly i will still be using my one.
Well done enjoyed that would like to see an overall view of your layout and a summary of what you propose to do with sections not yet done, I have a Bachmann class 66 direct rail services and it is a beautiful runner, try getting the hornby belmond pullman loco it's a great addition was for me anyway. Another good update with plenty done, or redone as the case may be. As a serial lifter and relayer of track myself (I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure) I can sympathise. I have yards and yards of retaining walls on my own layout, though not nearly as much as yours, so I'll be interested to see what you do at the depot. Cheers
I have three of the Bachmann Class 66's, two GBrF's and the Evening Star version. I like them. Easy to work on, easy to fit DCC and runs well. I had a friend who ordered a couple of the Hattons model. When they finally arrived in Oz they were to put it mildly a complete dissappointment. Bits fell off them, one wouldn't run well, the other blew it's decoder as soon as it went on the track. After that he bought the Bachmann one's.
I’ve got a Hattons DRS liveried Class 66, it’s ok static display at the moment though, due to lack of space for a layout. I want more though, Bachmann ones are on my wishlist though
You do some great work, and it great to see you layout, but is it me or did you lift the track twice? It makes sense to relay the track to get a smoother curve, and better operations, look forward to see more of work as the layout moves on. Bye for now, stay safe, take care, and have fun.

Dave i have got x 2 Bachmann Class 66 EWS and DB both have excellent pulling power, i have not had any problems with these Locos, my only fault with the Bachmann Class 66 is there is only 1 driver in the one cab end Neil

Nice update Dave i would say you have made the right choice with ripping up that secion of track i like the new track design in that area what will that area beused for when finished. I love that class 66 too it is a good looking model.- Nicholas.
I like very much the way you use the solder. So many modelers use to much and have "blobs" all around. You can have a solid joint, without melting the sleepers, and not have a lot of solder. I am very lucky because I don't have to solder any more as I have gone total battery powered. I do not like to use nails even if they are very small. I just don't like it... Instead of trimming the long piece of track, you could stagger the connections. Personally, I was taught to solder the track for curves while it was straight thusly not having to solder on a curve. Less chance of a kink.
Great work as usual! Got some pointers when laying my track, currently i have been cutting curves in Cork underlay and glueing that then my track. Its very time consuming. You make it look so easy with just pining. Can I ask what track pins are you using and how do you cut your underlay after, are you using just a sharp blade and scoring? Keep up the great work, I love watching your videos
Hi, thanks. I use fine peco track pins, bag of 100 I think.. you’ll bend a lot! And therefore go through a lot lol. To cut the cork I mark a line 2-3mm from the outside of the sleepers, then cut using a sharp Stanley blade.
Hi dave Great update as always and thank you for thebtrack laying tip got some track work to do on my layout and might try your way of doing it as I usually cut the first sleeper off the two end of a piece of sl-100 and then replace after laying before ballasting. Why was a class 37 stuck in the station throat in all shots??? And don't know if you know but there are absolutely loads of adverts creeping into your videos over 6 sets for half hour video gets annoying when your really getting into your videos. Peter

Hi, I do leave expansion gaps. I left very small ones as I was laying it when it was over 20 degrees up the loft, a brief spell of decent weather!! Of course longer radius are ideal, but most of us are tighter for space. Medium ones are ideal! I use small ones in the depot.
Great ongoing projects Dave. I know your era, correct me if I’m wrong, is early 80’s but do you have a Deltic loco as travelled up to Edinburgh behind them very late 70’s/very early 80’s when they were getting fazed out replaced by HST’s

Strangely enough.. I had a thought about this just yesterday.. how to incorporate airfix models of wartime but keep it in 80s era. How about a movie film set on a branch line 😂. Could be an interesting little diorama within the greater layout. Director etc on chairs etc.

I have the Hornby Tom Moore 66, I don’t understand why Bachmann have made the mode a collector’s club exclusive, surely if you’re raising money for charity you’d want the most money raised possible? It is a lovely model though 👍

Printing liveries on model locomotives - hi Dave you mentioned in this video that you did not know how they print the models, well there is an excellent youtube clip th-cam.com/video/WoxtnAYGwrc/w-d-xo.html that explains the lengthy process in how models are made from scratch - it is an American manufacturer but it gives a real insight of the effort involved. Nice collection of sheds there! Yes i like the Oxford mk3. Ok it’s not perfect, the couplers are flimsy and some of the liveries are wrong but over all it’s a lovely item.

Another superb video Dave, great for a novice like me to see what can be achieved. I have a number of Class 66's, which I find suitable for a more modern layout. I have two Bachmann's (both "Malcolm Logistic's"), and both are excellent runners, simply don't miss a beat. Down here in Perth, Australia its becoming harder and harder to pick up the kit you want, simply forced to bring it in directly from UK - for example those relay boxes and rodding kits are simply not available here.
Good project Dave to remodel the West end to give you improved alignments and operational flexibility ... looks great and well constructed as always! I’ve managed to resist introducing any Class 66’s onto my layout ... although having commuted aboard the Cross Country HST’s many many times, I’ve been seriously tempted to have a rake of the SD Mark 3’s ... just about resisted so far! Good luck with the next projects 👍
Hi, yeah I resisted... but this came to me as a gift, so I’ll make an exception 😆 I’ve some modern day stock in my collection, it allows me to do some modern running sessions. I have the scotrail mk3 SD. Good models... once you switch over the noisy wheels they come with.
Hi Dave brilliant update the new track work looks awesome can't wait to see all detail round that area.👍My view on the class 66 I did have a Bachmann one many years ago just about the same time you started building your layout and I couldn't fault it great loco but sadly due to personal issues and roof problems I binned and sold all the stock. Now that I started the layout again I may get another but I'm more for the British locos ie 37 47 58 60 57. Out the three manufacturers I pick bachmann all day long. I agree, overall bachmann are too. But their stuff is over priced and they don’t release much these days! Hornby have a far better range, but sadly it’s often rushed out and has errors.
Nice one Dave, enjoyed that. I thought you were gonna make a mini Millerhill on the layout for a moment. Having a shed on the layout would be slightly weird, considering the time period Dean Park is set in but as far I'm aware, if it's your layout, it's your rules. I'm really looking forward to see what the new changes and your projects add to what is already a very impressive layout. Thanks for sharing.

Dave a great layout update, regarding the class 66 I think you called it correctly, the Bachmann version is the best allrounder on the market, I have 4, 2 factory sound fitted and 2 of the original 8 pin versions which I have fitted with the Hornby TTS sound but I am planning to upgrade the speaker at some point.
Yeah its the best one. No issues with poor build quality or dodgey liveries! And its far superior to the railroad Hornby one.
Great video as always Dave. I also have the Tom Moore 66, which brings me upto 19 class 66s. My favourite being 66711 "Sence" in GBRf Aggregate livery. Currently in the process of installing Zimo sound decoders and Illuminated Model light boards in all 19 of them. My older ones with 8pin deocders are also being upgraded with 21pin PCBs for better functionality as and when I can get my hands on them.
I am in Lancaster where we too had a Nairn linoleum factory, sadly no more.

Re soldering.. I think its always worth pointing out to use the best cored solder you can. Makes it so much easier. Using non cored solder is almost impossible without lashings of rosin flux.. in my experience. 👍😄

They use "pad printing" to apply the markings to the model. It's sort of like ink stamping in concept, but the image is engraved (photo etch or laser) onto a flat plate. Ink is squeegeed into the engraving and they use a soft silicone pad to pick up the image from the plate and then transfer it to the model. The pad is soft enough to conform to the detail on the model and they use static charges to "encourage" the ink to transfer completely.

I've got 2 Class 66s, ones by Bachmann [66406 or 7?] and other by Hornby [66185 'DP World London Gateway']. Both good runners but 66185 is lighter and therefore when I tried to get 66185 to haul about 16 or 17 wagons of various sizes it couldn't do it, the maximum I 66185 to haul was 10-12 wagons. I haven't tested my 66/4 yet but I'll get round to it. Thanks for the great videos Dave.
Looking good Dave. Always enjoy the updates. Just a thought - but to add some variety - have you considered doing something different with your retaining walls? For example, bring a grassed embankment down at around 50 degrees from the upper level and then where it gets close to the lower track, add your retaining wall at that lower height. Putting my civil engineering hat on, this is probably how it'd be approached in real life - to cut down on the required height of the wall needing to be built.

Regarding the 66 it is a very nice model I myself have all 3 currently produced avaliable versions that are on the market and I’m very Happy with all of them, in my opinion while the hattons one is more detailed and I do have a very different outlook on them now compared to what I thought of the at first as I really didn’t like them at all however that has changed since I own one now I would say it is still the bachmann one that is still my personal favourite mainly because it didn’t have any issues with it also it is in a livery that hattons didn’t produce, I also got it fairly cheaply, when it comes to the hornby one i bought that one because it was being sold quite cheaply and it was in a special livery and the hattons one was because the price had been discounted to £119.
My models are hornby 66705 golden jubilee, bachmann 66411 in Stobart livery and my hattons one is 66762 in GBRf
History will show the Hattons one was a bit of a flop, which probably caused Hattons more hassle than it was worth, especially getting in to conflict with Bachmann over! Bachmann one wins!
@@DeanPark your probably right there, although it does seem to be hit and miss with the hattons ones, I have only had a couple of issues that I have managed to rectify myself and it has been a fine model since so hopefully I won’t have anymore issues, as for the bachmann one as you rightly say it does win hands down and when I can hopefully get a layout set up properly i will still be using my one.

Another good update with plenty done, or redone as the case may be. As a serial lifter and relayer of track myself (I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure) I can sympathise. I have yards and yards of retaining walls on my own layout, though not nearly as much as yours, so I'll be interested to see what you do at the depot. Cheers

I have three of the Bachmann Class 66's, two GBrF's and the Evening Star version. I like them. Easy to work on, easy to fit DCC and runs well. I had a friend who ordered a couple of the Hattons model. When they finally arrived in Oz they were to put it mildly a complete dissappointment. Bits fell off them, one wouldn't run well, the other blew it's decoder as soon as it went on the track. After that he bought the Bachmann one's.
Oh dear. That’s not acceptable is it. You know what you’re getting with Bachmann compared to hattons.
I’ve got a Hattons DRS liveried Class 66, it’s ok static display at the moment though, due to lack of space for a layout. I want more though, Bachmann ones are on my wishlist though

Dave i have got x 2 Bachmann Class 66 EWS and DB both have excellent pulling power, i have not had any problems with these Locos, my only fault with the Bachmann Class 66 is there is only 1 driver in the one cab end Neil

Bachmann Class 66s Dave, yes have two (rebranded into DB Cargo, 66s 009 and 065) with one put aside at the model shop 66117.

I like very much the way you use the solder. So many modelers use to much and have "blobs" all around. You can have a solid joint, without melting the sleepers, and not have a lot of solder. I am very lucky because I don't have to solder any more as I have gone total battery powered. I do not like to use nails even if they are very small. I just don't like it... Instead of trimming the long piece of track, you could stagger the connections. Personally, I was taught to solder the track for curves while it was straight thusly not having to solder on a curve. Less chance of a kink.
Yeah I try where I can to avoid soldering on curves.. but sometimes I can’t avoid it. :-)

Great work as usual! Got some pointers when laying my track, currently i have been cutting curves in Cork underlay and glueing that then my track. Its very time consuming. You make it look so easy with just pining. Can I ask what track pins are you using and how do you cut your underlay after, are you using just a sharp blade and scoring? Keep up the great work, I love watching your videos

I use fine peco track pins, bag of 100 I think.. you’ll bend a lot! And therefore go through a lot lol.
To cut the cork I mark a line 2-3mm from the outside of the sleepers, then cut using a sharp Stanley blade.

Great update as always and thank you for thebtrack laying tip got some track work to do on my layout and might try your way of doing it as I usually cut the first sleeper off the two end of a piece of sl-100 and then replace after laying before ballasting.

And don't know if you know but there are absolutely loads of adverts creeping into your videos over 6 sets for half hour video gets annoying when your really getting into your videos.

Hi, I do leave expansion gaps. I left very small ones as I was laying it when it was over 20 degrees up the loft, a brief spell of decent weather!! Of course longer radius are ideal, but most of us are tighter for space. Medium ones are ideal! I use small ones in the depot.
Great ongoing projects Dave. I know your era, correct me if I’m wrong, is early 80’s but do you have a Deltic loco as travelled up to Edinburgh behind them very late 70’s/very early 80’s when they were getting fazed out replaced by HST’s

Dave, A quick one. What paint did you use to paint the yellow buffer stops? I've tried Railmatch acryllic Warning Yellow (2022) on top of Halfords Grey Premier and its still transparrent after 2-3 coats. Thanks in advance. AndyA
That’s what I used. Warning yellow. Airbrushed on. It takes quite a few passes but it will cover the primer.

Strangely enough.. I had a thought about this just yesterday.. how to incorporate airfix models of wartime but keep it in 80s era. How about a movie film set on a branch line 😂. Could be an interesting little diorama within the greater layout. Director etc on chairs etc.

Printing liveries on model locomotives - hi Dave you mentioned in this video that you did not know how they print the models, well there is an excellent youtube clip th-cam.com/video/WoxtnAYGwrc/w-d-xo.html that explains the lengthy process in how models are made from scratch - it is an American manufacturer but it gives a real insight of the effort involved. I will probably never moan about the price again! Darren
