    Yeah you need the 4 actual sides of the tank peices so they would have just thrown the sprue in the box instead of haling to re mould a separate sprue just for the female! Same as Dragon and RFM the amount of parts for other kit's it's bonkers! It's great to start with but when you keep building n building all these parts you don't know what to do with and I'm one them I couldn't throw a kit part away hahah

    It's the original 1967 release of the Mark 1 Tank, Male, with the six pounder sponsons. In 2014, the 'Female' was introduced to tie in with the WW1 Centenary. New figure sets were mooted, but never appeared. The 'Female' sponsons are a recent addition. This did mean that, with a bit of work, you could make a Mark V 'Hermaphrodite', which had both male, and female sponsons. I cheated, though, and used an 'Emhar' 1/76 Mark IV for the main body. Cutting the exhaust doesn't matter, as the exhaust on the model is completely wrong anyway. The exhaust fumes actually came out of the holes where you are meant to fix the exhaust pipe; the holes were covered with angled louvres. Your smoke fitting looks much better, and similar to a system tried out by the French and Americans to lay smoke on the battlefield. And your finished result is superb. Nice one.

      I didn't know that about the exhaust - thanks :-)

    Apparently, there was a tank with a six pounder gun on one side and a sponson with two machine guns on the other side in the First World War.

    I often see you using the dedicated panel line accent liquid. Is this measurably better than a simple brown/black home-made wash of similar colour?
    Love your videos. Perfect pace, explanations, amusing commentary. Keep going!

    • @SteamGeezerUK
      @SteamGeezerUK  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. I use the panel line accent because it's enamel based and so is easy to clean up over an acrylic varnish. It's one of those things that, if you have it, use it, but if you don't there are ways around it.

    Is it mk1? They didn't have them type of roof exhausts anyway did they? Thought they just had holes in the roof and the manifold header pipes just going from the engine to the bored holes and nothing protruding the actual roof itself?

      Thanks. I would recommend the newer Airfix starter kits. They're cheap and go together reasonably well for the most part. Also, if you get it wrong, it's no big deal as you haven't spent a fortune on them.
      Keep an eye out as they're often sold half price in some stores.

    I was wondering if it would have been possible to drill out the exhaust pipes and silencer then
    attach them to the much larger pipe inside the model thus creating an in-scale exhaust system???

      The problem with that is that the diameter would be so small, the vapour would likely condense and form a droplet that would block the pipe.

  • @ZFG1467
    @ZFG1467 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    You could have done the exhaust but with the parts that came with the kit. Use a pin vise on the exhaust pipe and then attach it.

    • @SteamGeezerUK
      @SteamGeezerUK  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I could, but I've worked with smoke machines for quite a while and experience tells me it would have been quite ineffective, if it worked at all. The volume of the pipe would have been very low and it's likely the pipe would simply gas lock and no smoke would come out. Even this pipe has blocked on a couple of occasions - basically the fluid condenses on the inside of the pipe and forms a droplet that blocks the pipe.
      Thanks for watching.

    19:56 You really do use that screen for everything, don't you? Thanks for the ideas.
    Don't listen to those telling you that you should have tried to use the original exhaust system. Instead, listen to me when I say I'd have thought about sticking a slightly smaller tube partway inside the exhaust end to make the "smoke" go straight out instead of at an angle. ;>)
    Also, I'm a shamelessly inveterate scratchbuilder/modifier. It looks to me as if there's actually room for both kinds of sponson on the sides of that thing, maybe glued together, if you move the existing ones forward a bit. What would they have called that, a double hermaphrodite?
    Oh, and how did your son's model come out? Hope he's proud of it.

    • @SteamGeezerUK
      @SteamGeezerUK  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I kept the spare sponsons, but it did cross my mind to add them all at once :-)

    Why do you use hair spray?

    • @SteamGeezerUK
      @SteamGeezerUK  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The hairspray is used as a chipping medium to allow the paint to be weathered. It's a fairly common technique. I did a little video on the technique here - th-cam.com/video/r9eCG7HlmWI/w-d-xo.html
