A dynasty from 06-08. 02-05 was the beginning. They came close to winning a championship all those years but came up short. 03, Matt Kenseth had a big point lead and Jimmie took 2nd place. 04, Jimmie was some 8 points short. 05, he had a chance, but it all slipped away from his hands after he crashed at Homestead. Let's not forget he and Chad were fighting amongst themselves halfway through or towards the end of 05 I can't say for sure. But 06 on, they got everything in the right direction. 02-05 is what I considered Phase I. 2006-2010 was Phase II. 2011 was a struggle. 2012 was probably a rebuilding year. 2013-2016 was maybe Phase III. 2017 was probably the beginning of the end of their winning ways.

Ah, the 48 winning in true Hendrick style. Not that competitive all night and then magically the fastest car on the track with only 2 tires lol. I do find it funny that during the 48’s dominance at Charlotte its never mentioned that they were the only team invited to the Goodyear tire tests at the track from 2002-2005.
I was gonna comment this, but had to make sure no one else already said it lol. Isn’t it amazing? Runs like crap all night, then all the sudden is 2 tenths better than everyone else on the last run. They did that on numerous occasions and I’ve never figured out how they were able to get away with whatever they were doing

That’s Chad knowing something that every other crew chief in the garage had no idea of at the time.

Also from what I heard years ago, there was a SPEED Channel that focused on scanner audio (before radioactive was a thing) and supposedly Chad Knaus was telling Jimmie Johnson "NBC director is going to give race control a count down from 10".

This was the 2nd ever NASCAR race I ever attended at 11 years old, I was at the start finish line with my dad and little brother. Is it just me, or were the cars faster back then? They look like they’re flying down that backstretch.
I feel like they should have moved the running order scroll up a little more because there was a good size gap between the top of the frame and where it was at. It covered up some of the cars depending on the camera angle.
How could I forget about Robby Gordon flying across the infield through the pit road opening after his engine blowing up. He got chewed out by a few crew members and officials because he almost ran them over.
as much as people complain about the tires issues now, people would absolutely freak out if this happened this year. goodyear has a long track record of being absolutely terrible.
2nd year in a row in that race that the car that lead the most laps got robbed by a tire failure while running upfront. And Jimmie happens to be the one who comes up lucky. Shame for Elliott Sadler.
This race is why I think that Monday night racing at Charlotte would work wonders. Of course the racing would need to be really good, but other than that Chase Elliott fans that want the Roval and bad racing now are the only things holding a Monday night Charlotte race back
NASCAR needed more road racing. Thankfully we have a pretty decent schedule in 2021 with a lot of diversity in race tracks, even a dirt race, and a much better car in 2022. That half mile they'll have in Fontana will be pretty interesting in 2022 too.... and even though not set in stone, there are serious efforts to put Nashville Fairgrounds on the Cup schedule for a second Nashville date.
@@de31168 for some reason I thought this race ran on Sunday night. I thought it would work on a Monday because with a lot of the smaller football games on Mondays moving to streaming services NASCAR could snag a primetime Monday slot for the race
Actually NASCAR in 2008 was bad for tires... and has been ever since lol. Indy would have been no problem without the COT atrocity. Thankfully next year we'll have something better. COT lasted way too long. (Gen6 is just a slightly prettier COT)

The roval is dumb. It’s only cool amongst todays crowd because they 550 package was atrocious. Nascar thought that making every race a copy of Daytona or talladega would bring in more fans. Turns out it just as terrible as the real fans thought it was going to be. The roval is a gimmick.

The track changes they made in 2005 were disastrous for the cars that year. Both Cup races were total wreckfests with the tires they had.
