This is the first time I have ever disliked anything this guy has done. I think he's part of the liberal elite. He is another person basically calling all UKIP members and voters racist and stupid. I am fed up with this kind of behaviour towards anyone who disagrees with them. I have never voted for UKIP, but they're not Nazis or anything close to that. This lazy labelling helps no one.

Some of the comments here reflect my observations from seeing Al in his Pub Landlord persona live. He touches on it in his talk when he references satire. It seems that many in his audiences don't realise that the persona is a satirical construct of a no-nothing, blow-hard, always able to offer an opinion pub bore. They connect with his "common sense" outlook, and think he's for real - someone that can articulate their outlook in an interesting and funny way. I see comments in here that show the same - they don't get that he's taking the piss out of them, even when he's said as much in the video they just watched.

  • @neilmoore5387

A very clever man all round. As Pub Landlord he’s genius. How he can just spew facts about history , geography, wars and any subject. When he asked that blokes name on the front row ( Luke) even though he said he wasn’t going to do anything I thought he was just about to. Some folk just don’t get Al Murray Pub Landlord. Some think he’s real I think and not a parody.

    This comments section is fascinating.
    Several interesting points:
1.) He's already acknowledged that he was trying to take votes off UKIP, as he was off Labour, Lib Dem, Tories etc. that's how politics works.
2.) If you are a UKIP voter and can't tell the difference between Al Murray and your party's candidate then maybe you really are as thick as people think you are, plenty of UKIP voters managed the perfectly simple task of checking the box next to the UKIP candidate, because actually they're not that thick (a lot of them are just pissed off with the mainstream parties), so if you're the one sat there going "He's just trying to dupe the stupid plebs" what does that say about your views on UKIP voters? If you genuinely think he's a threat to UKIP's voter base then you obviously hold the exact same opinion of those voters as you're accusing him of holding.
3.) If you're complaining about him being unfunny why are you watching him? Also why are you watching him give a talk at a university where he's clearly out of character and then expecting him to deliver a comedy routine?

    • @Comando96

Additionally, to add a little bit of quantitative analysis there are 46 down votes out of 394 votes, and that 16 of the original comments, out of the 34, are negative. The disproportionate ratio makes me want to know, are a 3rd of the down voters really really motivated, or is a lot of this comment section Poe's law.

And yet this man, who the elite types think so deserving of mockery, has arguably had a bigger impact on British politics than anyone since World War Two. Starting pretty much by himself, with little to no funding, he spent 23 years campaigning tirelessly - through ridicule and smug opprobrium from all sides - for the UK to leave the EU, and bloody hell, he ended up doing it.
Even if you disagree with him, dislike him.. whatever.. it's quite a story, and quite an example of perseverance, and having the strength to carry on against the tide.

For remember folks the alternative is your lives being run by college boys like Al Murray, who make a living from being something that they are not. Trained and skilled actors, who take the piss out of their own audience.
Which indeed we already are to a much greater extent than most would like to imagine. Some may think that these people have made a good job on ballance others may not, I for one am certainly in the later camp. However without democracy it would not matter one jot what either you or I think, and this would be a dangerous situation to say the very least. The intellectual class allied with the big bucks, long since decided to marginalise democracy to the shit show it has progressively become, so that their bought and paid for, so called experts can run the World in the interests of themselves and there financial institutions.
Therefore rather then taking the piss out of our democratic process the people would be well advised to become actively involved in it, while they still have a democracy to be involved in. For make no mistake, if people like Al Murray and his mates have their way, there would be no democracy at all, and if the UK stays in the EU, it is all over bar the bread and fuel ques and consequent rioting.
If there is one thing a University education teaches most, it is a profound sense of one's own superiority over one's fellow man. That your own opinions and priorities are somehow more valid or important then virtually anyones elses. Democracy acts as a protection from these potential psychopaths permanently inflicting their own psychosis, namely nassasitic megalomania, onto the general population.
Al Murray may be witty, but think very carefully before laughing with someone who makes a living laughing at you, or your fellow man or women.

Al Murray, or Alastair James Hay Murray to give him his full name, is from an extremely wealthy and politically well connected aristocratic family. He went to a very exclusive independent school and Oxford University. His school fees were more each year than a whole working class family make in an entire year. Like the majority of the wealthy class from which our politicians and journalists come he has no understanding of why working class people would vote for Brexit. Nor does he want to find out, instead this wealthy man mocks working class people in his stand up comedy routine. Al Murray has never had to wait in line for social housing, he has never had to wait for an NHS dentist, he has never has to struggle to find a state school place for his child. Because his family are millionaires, who like to mock the working classes. He is the reason millions of working class people voted for Brexit.

As sense of humour is like deodorant; the people who need it the most, never have it.
Why are some people getting upset about Al Murray taking the piss out of Farage and UKIP? It's called satire.
The fact that some people take comedians more seriously than actual politicians already makes a mockery out of the whole political system.
You can't get away from the fact that the UK two parties political is a joke. You have to vote for the party you don't like, so that the party you don't like doesn't have a chance. That's not democracy. That's Hobson's choice.

    • @otterspocket2826
      @otterspocket2826 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I don't think people are getting upset that he satirised 'the whole political system', he didn't. He satirised a single candidate and a single party, but lacks the balls to admit that his predominant motivation was setting out his wares in a peacock-like display of his political credentials rather than comedy. What he actually made a mockery of is the endless procession of cloned, unremarkable off-the-shelf comedians who like to dabble in a bit of political activism to secure a regular and lucrative spot on the panel show circuit (it obviously has to be the 'right' - ie pseudo-left - activism, the champagne socialism of the political establishment and its wholly-owned BBC and C4 networks), and particularly his own ultimately vain attempt to join them.
He's made a career out of taking the piss out of audience, and that's very funny when it's done as an 'in joke' between 'friends'. The real piss take though was this political stunt, compounded by this lecture making it abundantly clear that "No, I'm taking the piss because I'm an elitist prick who thinks you're a bunch of fucking idiots".
Sadly (some might say) the panel show thing didn't materialise after all, and I understand his bookings and DVD sales took something of a hit in the aftermath too.
Now who's the 'fucking idiot', Al? Break a leg... or something.
