    That audience is more patriotic than the proms - I've never seen anything like it! Well done Al for getting Joanna Lumley on. Brits love the Gurkhas - there is no more popular ethnic group. We appreciate them so much for what they've done for us, which is down to their impressive character and physical toughness.

    From now on we can all refer to her as Dame Joanna Lumley, can't we? She's well deserving of that title especially with her charity work for the Gurkhas, isn't she? I don't know about anyone else but I'll always think of her as Patsy from Ab Fab. :-)

      I'll think of her as a paid shill for the Government, who sold her soul, and joined the campaign to segregate society with the clot shot.

    in 1988 I was in Victoria Station London using the public phone (we had no mobiles back then), I was talking to my mate, and looked across, I said "fu@king hell it's Joanna Lumley" she looked at me and smiled, my mate didn't believe me. When she finished her call, I asked her to talk to my mate up in Inverness, and tell him it's Joanna Lumley, she did, she said "f@cking hell it's me, Joanna Lumley" What a lovely lady, love her to bits. I also asked her to marry me, but she did the decent thing, and laughed at me :)

    Being a Brit Sikh I read so much about the Sikhs and their bravery fighting for the UK,70,000 in Europe...the Gurkas the same respect and a disgrace they can't be British after dying for us...The Falklands on the front line and Argies crap themselves here surrender...the Gurkhas what no scrap !!! If you are prepared to die for us then you have the right to be here. Just check out both honours for the UK.

      I've always been interested in military history from an early age, and my father and other male relatives all fought in WW2 in various arenas - France, North Africa, Italy etc. as well as uncle who was a para and one who was in the RN. Whenever I asked them who were the best troops in their opinion (admittedly expecting them to say German) the answer I invariably got was the Sikhs. I remember one uncle telling me if they always felt more confident if they knew there was a Sikh regiment near by.

      Hmm. Not sure about that. Still a looker and what she did for the Gurkhas is absolutely commendable. But aren't you just a little tired of that put on breathlessness in everything she says and the way she repeats adjectives all the time to emphasise a point? And then there's her blind and cringing subservience to anything royal in the UK and we know what a crock of poo that's turning out to be! So, good, yes but a national treasure? Nah.

    My grandad served with the Gurkhas in India many years ago. It’s now Pakistan. I was privileged to serve with them too. During my military service in 1961. It was only 2 weeks. We went deep into the Malay jungle., chasing so called terrorists. We were never threatened, but then who would have the nerve to threaten a Gurkha.? I was only 20 but never felt a moment of nervousness. Our guardians were confident and courageous. I can never speak more highly of these wonderful people. The fact that thy cannot settle in U.K. is nothing short of disgusting. They should consider coming over on Dinghies.!

    The Gurkha Justice Campaign was one of the most successful lobbying campaigns of the last 10 years, delivering justice for Gurkhas who had fought for the British Army but were denied citizenship of this country.

    • @COIcultist
      @COIcultist 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well, it was great for the individual Gurkha, but not quite as straight forward as it first appears. We have been allowed to recruit Ghurkas from Nepal which gave them employment and the Gurkha returning from service with his pension was an economic boon for Nepal. Now, whilst any Gurkha might be most eligible for British citizenship, what does Nepal get out of this arrangement now?

    • @jazzycat8917
      @jazzycat8917 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@COIcultist Work opportunities that pay way higher than anything they could earn in Nepal and don't involve getting into any more wars, meaning the amount of remittance money to sent home to family or community (which makes up a large portion of the Nepalese economy) is higher. Nepal is a country running almost exlcusively on remittances and mountaineering tourism, they need those life and work rights to the UK.

    Joanne, I admire you intensely but a few facts need to be made clear before we condemn the Government, 1. The Contract signed by the prospective Gurkha clearly includes the right to reside in the UK and the terms under which this CAN happen. Effectively they are Contract soldiers ie mercenaries! Having completed basic training, language training and serving their first tour they are entitled to bring their families (including fathers, mothers, wife and children where they are treated just the same as any other (legal immigrant) and during their tour of duty receive all the family benefits including housing medical dental and education, If injured or killed in service the family is still treated the same. During their service they are entitled to apply for right to remain on completion of service, AND a fully government funded return trip to their home in Nepal every two years; Most Gurkhas I have met did not apply for the right to remain mainly because the process like any other immigrant can take up to 2 years ( a lot are too busy to bother until it is too late) However the option to take a British citizenship is still open to them, BUT IT HAS TO BE APPLIED FOR and like the Windrush generation a lot did’nt bother Over to you Joanna!!!!

      That wasn't true before 2004 and even after the rules changed it only applied to those who retired after 1997. Even for those who retired after 97, they had to meet strict conditions that didn't apply to other nationals who fought for us. Either Three years continuous residence in the UK during or after service, Close family in the UK, A bravery award of level one to three, Service of 20 years or more in the Gurkha brigade, Chronic or long-term medical condition caused or aggravated by service.
      I was in The Royal Signals and spent over a year Gurkha 247 Sig.

    I've always quite liked the way Joanna presents herself and of course her effort with the Gurkhas. However, I found it a little disturbing that despite earning quite a good living travelling first class around the world and encouraging travelers to spend their money in overseas countries to see the many splendid things, she's advocating that we (not sure if she just means us, but not her) cut back on meat and family holidays abroad to save the planet.
    She's also suggested that 'we' (again) adopt a 'wartime' carbon rationing system which sounds very much like a social credit system they have in communist countries.

      There is no difference they are all people.

      When they were allowed to stay (this clip is years old), the Ghurkas moved to Aldershot and were treated like sh*t by the locals. In the historic home of the British Army the families of bravest of them all were treated like dirt. They were treated with the same attitude you have toward refugees. So stop with your 'some people are more deserving than others' routine or does it really need pointing out to you that it echos a dark and not so distant past?

    We take in immigrants put them in a hotel and pay them yet deport people who have stood with us. Who have served the country. I am so angry as I imagine many are.

    40 years ago I had the great pleasure of greeting her at a theatre I managed and spent several hours in her company. Charming, intelligent, witty & beautiful but very down to earth with it.

    Fast forward 9k former Ghurkas are now living in poverty in Aldershot and Farnborough living in bed and breakfast from hand to mouth. Well done you never thought through the Policy. The veterans were promised houses, a car, a magical retirement. Problem was they are in limbo too old and weak to work and too poor to go home. Here in Surrey and Hampshire we love these gentle people it’s heartbreaking.

    Joanna always looks so Fabulous. And comes across as a Real Nice Person.
    Hence her ICON status I guess.!? Regarding her Favorite Places UK survey.
    I hope it included my Old Local Pub.
    'The Hoy and Helmet.' In Benfleet Essex.
    Before I left to Come and Settle in Australia. I had my Last British Pint, in that Pub.
    I love Australia and haven't returned to Uk. Since 1980 but if I were Able, that Pub would be my First Spot to Visit.
    Pubs here are Just 'Watering Holes.!' Great with mates but their Not Hundreds of years Old. ( Obviously )
    If there was One thing I would Love to move to Australia, it's the 'Hoy n Helmet pub.!' But I guess Benfleet would miss it..!
    Just Talking Pubs and 'Big Al' seems Right Some how..!
    Cheers All, From Downunder ( which is Beautiful, by the way.! ) No Worries Mate..!!
