grape vine says JD did 10 billion last year. yet they are moving 1500 or so jobs to south of the boarder. reason is ...... they cant afford to pay the people in thos spots now in the usa. if its true. and yep i think it is.. just another reason not to buy a deere. I WONT NEVER after the crap they put the big farms thru on right to repair.. NO WAY ...
Wait until the plastic ENGINE BLOCKS come out! lol
Now days with bad quality what is a quality lawn tractor?
With a steering wheel.
Taryl would you please make a tool that will attach to a hand held air compressor to clean mowers with. Not everyone has a garage, and my sisters grandson won't drag the compressor out of the shad to clean the mower after using it. You never know it might sell.
Tri County Equipment in Burton, Michigan just helped out my elderly neighbor last year for this exact repair. They went above and beyond, they even gave him a free oil change too!!
They got some dinner and desert.
You sure it wasn't one of rear end cleanses.
You can tell Taryl has been in the business forever because he’s having a hard time keeping his outrage contained. Keep up the good work Taryl.
I know, I can’t blame him, I expect it
Thanks for the PSA on this one, Taryl. Much respect to you for holding Deere's feet to the fire
You're an honest man Taryl, never change, we appreciate you!!
Best line of the whole video; "If you can't afford it, don't buy it! Buy what you can afford." Thanks for the reminder Taryl.
I was waiting (and hoping) to see if Taryl did the right thing by contacting the customer that gave him the tractor. And he did. Of course he did. Another reason I admire and respect Taryl.
Taryl is a REAL human being!
Also remember to be civil if you have to deal with the JD dealership....getting mad at someone who has nothing to do with corporate decisions might sink your chances of getting a new transmissheon. Great info again Taryl
Taryl You Just Proved to Me what Kind of man you are Honesty, is what makes us who we are. Thank you Taryl Nice thing you did. God Bless There's not many Men that would do what you did. Most Care about Money
Fellow grass rat from down in Florida, I'm a turf tech at a JD dealer and in the past we would send a technician out to Home depot, Lowes etc to set up the mowers of the JD metal crates they come in from the factory (we have to return these crates back to Deere when we are done with them) all you really have to do is air down the tires, check the oil, level the deck and put on the little brushguard if it has one, and hook up the battery. Then it was the Techs responsibility to register the unit for warranty then. However the box stores complained that it took too long for the tech to come out and do this, so they started setting them up on their own, this has led to it being the customers responsibility to register the new units. These box stores setting these units up has led to a lot of issues with improper set ups, I see a lot of bent decks from fork lifts, dead batteries and units come in saying they don't start simply because the blades are engaged! Those stores hire dummies!
I hate the company called John Deere they suck big time
Thank goodness for people like Taryl!! We need more Taryl's in the world! Too many people are soft and afraid of offending someone. Tell it straight and tell it like it is!! The best way!
I bought a John Deere X380 three years ago. I cut about 2.5 acres of sloped yard. Half way up a hill I heard a crack, the mower started rolling backwards picking up speed. Hit the brakes and they didn’t work either. By this time I was rolling downhill pretty good. I had the choice of continuing to on till I hit a tree or my neighbors house or cutting it sharp to move along the side of the hill and maybe rolling the tractor. I cut it sharp, didn’t roll, and luckily got it under control. I called the dealer and they told me they’d been trying to call to let me know there was a recall on that model. Something with the hubs and when it broke the transmission and brakes would no longer work and not to use it till they came to pick it up and fix it cause it was very dangerous. I said, “No kidding!” To make matters worse about three weeks after all this I got a letter from John Deere warning me of the danger after the fact. The dealer repaired it and I haven’t had any problems since then.
Hey Taryl awesome tutorial. There’s probably a very large number of people that purchased a JD from HD that never got registered. You go above and beyond to make things right.
I have a 2003 JD L110 that I purchased from our local JD dealer. It now has over 600 hrs. I mow 1 acre with a couple of steep slopes. It came with a Tuff Torque K46 that began to fail at 430 hrs. I replaced the oil in the K46 transaxle with 5w-50 synthetic at 150 hrs. You have to remove the transaxle to dump and refill the fluid. I replaced the original K46 with a new K57R I did have to swap axles from the K46 into the new K57R that was originally equipment for a Husqvarna. The K57 has a pressurized lube system the K46 is splash lube. Both can be serviced but I got the K57 brand new from a surplus outlet for $250.00. I saw how to overhaul the K46 here on Taryl Fixes All. The K57 works great and I have a higher top speed than the K46 had. I still have the original Kohler single cylinder 17.5 Hp engine. Regular maintenance goes a long way, thanks Taryl for all the great how to and other valuable information.
I'll keep using my 1991 Dynamark that has never failed me yet!!! Of course good gas and maintenance goes a long way. I will never pay today's ridiculous prices. Thanks for all you do for us
Your a great man Taryl, I don't know many people who would of done what you done. A real honest man, a real honest shop. That's why your still around and people come to you. Great video. Keep up the great work
But he knew nothing about the recall. Clueless. He should have been up on the recalls or have told the custom that he would check into it before they purchased another mower.
TARYL fixes all. Well you did to me now my wife will not talk to me . Because I am outt side working on all the broken things . Now she puts my food in a dogs dish out side I never ate so good .Thank you
There's your dinner!
lmao woooooooooo!
You’re a great guy and super honest. When people buy a riding mower I tell them you’re buying the engine and transmission. People looking should do some research as to what they’re buying. Compare products thoroughly. Go to different dealers even if you have to drive out of your way. Don’t buy equipment on a whim. Sleep on it before you buy.
Never had this kind of problem 60 yrs ago when I was raking in money as a 10 yr old kid PUSHING an Iron Horse mower. Taught me steady nerves--had to push that metal tab down on the sparkplug to shut it off.
Taryl - You're Just awesome - I totally agree with these so called big box stores of never to buy something major like what you are showing there - And to go to a reputable store that deals with all the warranty issues and or like this { Recall } ...
John Deer.. Refuses your Right to Repair.. but is OK with their Right to Refuse.
John Deere is overrated! Mahindra (tractor company in India) is blowing JD out of the water, sales wise!
It's also you're right to die or be maimed because their transmissions explode!
It has become such a horrible company.
I think I'll stick with my old Hustler. I've seen what my neighbor has gone thru with his JD.

Thank you Taryl. I own one of these and have already had to replace the variator pulley (spring broke) and the rear pulley assembly (cast aluminum "bracket" crossmember, whatever, broke). In both cases I couldn't buy just the part that broke. I had to buy whole assemblies so the total cost, using aftermarket (not OEM) parts off Amazon cost approximately $130.00 incl. tax. I did the work myself. The variator I did with the help of your awesome clear and detailed video. My machine has 245 hours on it. I bought it used in 2017 so I will update this after I attempt some contacting to let you and others know my outcome. Anyway really appreciate you. Bought some merch and subbed brother! There's your dinner👍
Hav a Toyota Land Cruiser that had a recall on a leaking gas tank that I ignored until it started to leak about 15 years after the recall. I figured that since it had been so long since the recall that I would be out of luck, but when I contacted my local Toyota dealer they said that they would still cover the recall ,free of charge, but I would have to wait about 6 weeks for the to get the repair parts
I have a 1992 Jeep Wrangler Sahara and it has a parking brake recall. They will still honor the recall.
Another great video . I loved my John Deere lawn tractor back in the early 90' s . Thank you for your channel . I love bucktooth sunday's !
Good save Taryl. Just goes to show you, if you get ahold of the right dealer / employee, you can get things done! I have a good Deere dealer down here. Last season My old Deere Sabre 25-54 gave up after 25 years and 2400 hours, so I saw a second hand Deere X495 on his lot. Wasn't cheap but nice, diesel and ready to go. This was in January. Come first warm days, I tried it out. Every few minutes it would stop the mower pto. I'd have to shut off the motor to reset it so it would work again, I also noticed that the temp gauge didn't work. So I called the salesman, he said let me check with management. They came and picked it up and repaired it at no cost, even though it was second hand, but they had also sold it when new. Seems the instrument cluster was bad and it also controls the safety shut off if over heated. Also put on new sensors, no cost to me. But those parts retail for around $1200. I'm sure the dealer didn't make much money on it with me, but they made good relations here! That old Sab re line was a cheaper Deere sold by Home Depot, but it served us well, the Kohler needs likely a valve job as the exhaust gets so hot as to burn paint off the frame and also sets the grass on fire if you don't keep moving!
This is how the society that is so extremely concerned about the environment does business don't fix it just throw it away and buy a new one.
We have become a throw away society. The green movement is full of uniformed hypocrites.
It's really two separate ideas, and different people having them. 💩🤡
I sold Lowe's mowers 1987-90 and bought a 12HP 38" cut Taskforce ( made by MTD) with the Transmatic belt drive variable speed transmission and was happy with its performance. It's a lawn mower and wasn't designed to tow your truck. I think the problem is General transmissions were poorly designed and manufactured.
P.S. I live in the town the cheaper John Deere's are assembled, Greeneville Tennessee. I've applied for a job there and they informed me they use Temp Agencies for workers since TN is a right to work state.
It's the prophet environment for them
@@moodist1er Bull💩!!🤡,🤦🏿!!
That is awesome that you were honest, you could have easily not said anything to the owner. But someday when you're standing in front of the Lord you will be accountable for everything. Thank you!!!
I have a John Deere STX38 (circa 1988-1993) with the Kohler CV12.5 engine (yellow deck). Nothing fancy but it gets the job done. I'm still using it to this day (30+ years).
I was just out in Valparaiso Indiana, wondering where Taryl’s shop is, would love to thank him in person for all the great things he’s done for us grassrats!
He's about 25 miles south of Valparaiso, IN.
Good video Taryl thanks for all these information,
I bought my d105 used. I replaced the variable speed parts. It ran good for 2 years. I am now replacing the the drive belt for the first time. I don't know if mine was in the recall but if the belts and one pulley are all I have to replace every few years then I made out good. I'll keep fixing it myself until they stop making the parts. Then I'll look at buying another mower. I have a ferris zero turn as well that does all the heavy mowing. I use the tractor to pretty up the front yard because the cut quality is way better on the john deere. So it's really never under any strain since we have a commercial zero turn to do the heavy work.
I bought a Toro personal pace snowblower in 2016. It has a plastic transmission. I haven't used it much so luckily it still works.
AWESOME !! Taryldactel... you're the best funnyist channel around, Keep making these cool repair videos brother! I learn alot
Thanks Taryl for being an honest man and helping out so many people.
For comparison I have a 1965 Cub Cadet my father purchased new in 65 and still use it to cut grass, plow snow and even have a one bottom plow for it. Still use it all year round. Rebuilt engine one time and changed the clutch and that's it.
My favorite vintage tractor is the JD 140. I repower them and they are beasts. No comparison to today's tin/plastic stuff.
Hey Taryl, I was thinking that looks almost like new for a 2016! At least JD sends someone out to prep theirs at the box stores. My sister bought a new Husqvarna back in the spring from one of the ''box'' stores and it's been nothing but trouble. (wheel spindle wore out- not covered under warranty) lift arm on deck broke, deck belt came off, etc. 🙄😒
That's why back in 2017 I bought a Troy-Bilt TB 30R for $900. It did the one thing I needed it to do - it cut grass. Less than an acre worth of yard to mow. Light enough to push around by myself in case it had problems. Simple enough that I could take it apart by myself and fix it with hand tools. And yes, I got down and checked it out underneath, to see what I'd be getting into if I had to fix it myself. Only time I've had reason to cuss it, was earlier this year, when that gravel screen 150 micron fuel filter allowed some crud into the Nikki carb, jammed the needle open, and hydrolocked the engine by draining a 1/2 gallon of gas into the engine. But even then, got all the parts, rebuilt the carb, drained out all the gas and went over the engine, and it's still going strong.
Classic mower. One big blade. Simple.
That's a very informative video Taryl, and a satisfactory outcome on this occasion. Nicely done. 👍
Funny enough I bought a d100 without doing any research when I got it before using it I looked it up on TH-cam and came across your channel and subbed but it had the plastic transmission and I immediately took it back to Lowe’s
I guess they figured everyone has already been deathed or injured that had those lawn mowers lol
Very Well explained ,covered a few good points, Big Companies are greedy too, Perhaps the worst, They need to learn a lesson from yourselves and be straight and fair keep there customers ,
Great information. Enjoy all your videos.
My background is automotive service. Spent many years as a GM dealer tech. In their parlance, if it expired it was a Customer Satisfaction Campaign. A recall is forever. From 2001-2012 I was at a Cadillac dealer. A gentleman came to the parts department looking for, if I remember correctly, a tie rod end that was covered by a recall… from the 1950s. It took some time (maybe a couple months?) but GM had to get him a part.
It may sound like just semantics, but there are legal definitions for the chosen phrase, at least in the automotive world.
I enjoy Your content immensely.
Stan from Norway.
Thank You, and don't mind negative comments. Low information persons tends to complain about good info. Often a case of the Dunning-Krueger effect.
Another great and funny video. Keep them coming. 🤗
I have a craftsman t2500 with that same transmission. So far haven't had any problems with except for leaking axle seals
Just another reason to move forward with rebuilding the Tecumesh HH120 in my 1967 Sears Suburban at the end of this mowing season. Probably has less than 10 plastic parts on the entire tractor, and those are things like choke & throttle knobs and the cigarette lighter knob.
I have never seen one at my shop with internal problems... the external parts are fun to replace. I enjoy working on these
Super excellent review…and I do mean magnifico ! Thanks mucho Daryl !!
Hallelujah!!! Buy what you can AFFORD! The greatest advice ever given that no one listens too. Good job Taryl!! 👍
Taryl you're the king of honesty.
Nice job on the video.
Yeah, another TH-cam Creator had kinda put that out there a month ago, there is a recall.... Or was?? I never heard of a recall "expiring", that's a new one.... But that's in the car world, and I think the NTSB handles those.... I really don't know who would control a lawn tractor recall.... that's a whole thing in the car world, you go to trade in you truck or whatever, and they tappy tap tap on their computer, and say "Oh wow, you have 3 open recalls on this truck, that you never did.... Well, we can't give you barely anything in trade with 3 open recalls...."
Anyways, that was pretty cool, that your Dealer did the right thing & fixed it..... Now, in my mind, I kinda wonder, what about all the people who paid out of their pocket to fix this over the years??? Are they getting refunds??? What are they supposed to do??? Some people actually use their tractor... Probably broke years ago....
That one you have there, that puppy is mint... Holy crap. No hours on it... What a nice tractor.... I mean, besides the plastic transmission, it looked amazing.... Looked brand new. Bodywork, the controls, the seat is always a mess, that seat looked great.....
I had a 2012-ish model D105 with the plastic GT transmission that I used for about 8 years to mow a little less than an acre in a residential setting, and it was garage-kept. It worked great, but what I found is that if I didn't keep the top of the transmission clear of grass and yard debris, the external controls to the transmission (shift rod for drive/reverse and the neutral release) would eventually start hanging up due to the accumulated debris. The problem on the D105 is that the area above the transmission isn't very accessible to keep clean. I had to run my leaf blower around the rear wheel wells and under the fender after every mowing, to get enough air in through the few available holes to blow any debris clear. Once I learned that trick, I had no more issues. I think if they'd have designed the external controls better or put a debris shield over the transmission, it might just have worked good enough to squeak by for most people using the mower for its intended purpose. You gotta keep in mind the D105 was the cheapest riding mower JD made for most of the time it was in production, and it was really only intended for residential yards that were just big enough to need a riding mower.
You could measure the distance to far planets by how far Deere have fallen in the last decade.
I know many owners and none will buy that brand ever again.
You ate absolutely correct!!! When I was looking for a new dependable tractor, I read the horror stories online. I got a Simplicity and couldn't be happier
@@troy3052 If I understand correctly, there's two grades of John Deere; one is the disposable Big Box Store "John Deere" mower, the other is a mower from a certified John Deere dealer which is a higher grade machine sort of like the difference between a riding lawn mower and a garden tractor. In 2024, those lines may be more blurred than ever, however....
@@troy3052 I got a Bad Boy MZ with a Kawasucky engine and on year 8 not one problem. Only thing about it I do not like is non-servicible hydros. It has lasted so I suppose when they fail I will just put new ones on and make sure they are the kind that you can service if it is possible.
@@Hjerte_Verke If you buy the same mower model at either place it is the same. Found that out about 20 years ago when I bought my first JD lawn tractor. You just have to determine if the model is junk or not.
@@Hjerte_Verke According to Taryl, you CAN also get the "cheap" tractor from a John Deere dealer!
I'm glad your local dealer took care of the recall. Although some equipment wasn't registered, JD should keep track of the units serviced via the serial number. I'll agree that using plastic for this situation is dumb. Chickanic mentioned this problem also.
It's called a win win win. Fantastic effort and I hope Tarrell is properly rewarded... It also says something about john deere.
It's TARYL man
John Deere is getting to be like Boeing, using name recognition and forget quality!
I love watching taryl while I work on stuff 😂 no matter if I’m laying hardwood flooring or rebuilding a tuff torque tranny 😂
Tarly.....you are a good honest. Mechanic
Thank you sir I agree thanks for recall information.
Awesome video God Bless you and your family Amen
You’re a good honest man, Terrell
I contacted John Deere about having mine fixed after seeing this video. They asked me if I have a popular TH-cam channel. I said, "No". They said, "Sorry, can't help you."
Should have said, "No, but I watch Taryl Fixes All."
“No, but I bought this mower with OF money!”
The briggs and scrapin had a recall on the faulty decompression valve that expired. However the issue is still occurring.
THANK YOU FOR THE HEADS UP TARYL.👍🙋♂✌
I bought a D160 about 4 years ago. The reason I did was I got two very good discounts plus JD was offering $200 cash back. First discount was $500 of the regular price. Then I got a 10% military discount, and the $200 cash back. Yes, it was Lowe's. And as Taryl said, it was assembled by the local JD dealer. It was registered by Lowe's in my name. A week later, I got a welcome letter from the local dealer offering a free first oil change and service. Even free pick up and delivery. It's been a good mower. Of course, I do small engine service and repair. I will add one thing. I made the mistake of sitting on one of the new Toro TimeCutters just like Taryl has. Damn that is one comfortable machine.
I got my mower from a servicing dealer...... 7 years back. He taught us that the box stores have "special" models made to a lower price point. My mower has been healthy with Oil/Grease/Blade sharpening.
Excellent information, great video 😊😊
There is so much crap out there, it becomes difficult to choose a reliable mower. What else is left out there that we can call "reliable".
Yep! I own a John Deere D155! Never had a problem except for replacing the belts and a idler pulley on the deck. Changed the transmission fluid myself at 200 hours and still runs like a top...and there's your dinner!
"Nothing Runs Like A Deere"
Craftsman used a plastic transmission as well in this time period but their troubles were caused by excessive grass buildup in unreachable areas other than disassembly, not so much by failure.
I am curious how it works when your servicing dealer retires and closes. They sold lawn equipment and appliances. I bought several things from them and asked them if i needed to register, they said no, they had the warranty right there in their computer, and if the warranty was within a few days expired, they could still take care of us. They've been gone several months now. We still have appliances with several years of warranty left.
Hello Taryl,
Enjoy your channel for a couple years.
Can you recommend the smallest riding mower with high quality and longevity, no towing or other capabilities expected, just small, and price is not object. I just turned 65 and am buying my last roof, laundry machines, etc.
Me and my ganson claypool watch every vidio. We ordered some shirts from taryl and clay took it to show and tell at his 3rd grade class. He said they all liked it. I want to get him another shirt for his birthday. I hope his vids never end!
I bought a z530r from Lowe’s and they loaded it on my trailer in John Deere crate lol. I made them at least take it out the crate. All I had to do is connect the battery and reposition the roll ball in the right bolt holes. And level the deck. It comes all together.
Interesting that they sent it, untouched, in the original crate. Smart idea, and I'd prefer it shipped that way.
I've worked there, and tractor delivery to customer on the flat bed were only the pre-assembled units (such as the ones on display in front of store), placed into these reusable steel cradle crate/skids. Let me say, loading them back into the steel crates is not always a gentle process at all, especially for the beginners. The deck would regularly snag or scrape on the crate corners and the bumper or rear would sometimes be jammed into the fold up doors. Really, it was the zero turns that caused 95% of the issues, and required careful use of added ramp boards and spacers, while tilting the whole works with a forklift.
Thanks for the Video yeah i bought a lawn mower from lowes Club Cabet it HAD 12 HRS on it the Transmission didn't go out only 12 hours.. What went wrong? The Carburetor California emissions.. BUY A LAWN MOWER WITHOUT CALIFORNIA EMISSIONS..Its outside protected usused That company C/S was awful they lost a Customer for good....
Thanks for the heads up
Taryl it’s awesome that you are honest! and I don’t get it lol they build a machine like that out of metal not plastic but the actual part the transmission that controls the thing is made out of plastic parts, it’s a joke I don’t UNDERSTAND
I have a 2003 John Deere D105 and it is still running great. It has the old style shift gear transmission.
When you made the comment about driving the Cadillac, but couldn't afford to fix it. You were my stepdad. R.I.P
When i was young get ready to drive he said the same thing word for word.
Hey, easy on those variable speed pulley type transmissions. Nissan says they're a fine transmission. The Nissan Rogue has the same system (CTV) for a whole lot more than the big box store lawn mowers. AAANNND they have the exact same belt breakage/wears out problems. A family member has had two transmissions go out in two years in his Rogue. Now the car isn't worth the parts and labor to fix it. A throw away car just like the John Deere mower! The family member paid for years to buy that car and now it's not even worth the scrap value. The newer cars AND trucks are JUNK as well! I've had to keep old (before 2000) vehicles running with "some money", but they stay running at least. I appreciate your video Tayrl.
Right... exact same...
You're a good, honest dude.
I'd swear some of those lower end Deere models had frames, firewalls, and dashboards built by AYP as they looked exactly the same to me. I was going to say that D105 fits in that category, but that PTO lever position is a few inches closer to the steering wheel than on the Craftsman I'd compare it too.
That dealer. I give a shout out to. They have always done right by us.
I think a (total recall) skit is order or it would be pretty cool , you could base it on mower recalls
the yamaha ez-go gas golf carts also have the variable speed in the same manner. it works well and has few failures because there are no plastic parts.
If HD didn't register it HD should pay for the job.
Your so wright. Glad your local dealership came good on this one.
I bought a kubota zd1211 7 years ago just passed the 150 hour mark so i think thats alot but i have seen mowers like mine with 1500 hours with no repairs
My neighbor across the county road from my farm has one of these he had a lot of trouble with the front axle it never steered well and had issues with the front wheels falling off when the snap ring that held them on the spindle fell off he finally drilled and put cotter pins on them Then the front axle snapped in two at the center pivot ! $105 for the axel I do need to look as his see what it is . Now when is cub cadet going to issue a recall over all of those electrical problems resulting in a fire like mine had ?? !!
I owned a John Deere L130 that is still going strong today 20 years later, I bought it from the John Deere dealer in Homestead, Florida, I gave it to a friend 5 years ago after I bought my John Deere X758 tractor that will last me the rest of my life. I just changed out the transmission and front axle hydraulic oil, changed the engine oil and filter, changed the air filter and secondary air filter and changed the engine coolant. I also serviced the gear box on the mower deck. John Deere makes some very good tractors, they also make entry level price point models that you see at Home Depot and Lowe's, but they offer the entry level tractors to try and build brand loyalty so when you are ready for a new tractor you may upgrade to a higher end John Deere. I paid $2,400 dollars for my L130 in 2004 with a few add ons to it and I paid $14,600 dollars for my X758, but like I said the X758 will out last me. The brand loyalty kept me with John Deere because the L130 never let me down.
Our L120 from 2003 still cuts well.
I've mostly bought used craftsmans/murray to use and flip. I know my way around them. After the LT1000 series they start to get goofy, after the DYT4000 series, I lost all confidence in craftsman. In the last couple years, I've had a couple old john deeres fall into my lap. A model 68 which had my attention as a RER with a 2 blade deck is alot more tolerable than a single blade deck. Neighbor was gonna scrap it after sitting in his yard 2 years. Cleaned the carb started using it. Easily the best RER I've owned. Next one started with a coworker doing a clean out for a rental property. He only collects cub cadet, so called me asked if a wanted a free john deere. Said sure. Found it in the driveway that night. It's a lx279 with no hood. Rolled it into the garage. A year later I toss in a battery. It started instantly. Clearly has a blown head gasket, but ran strong. Ran it. Blows every previous piece of equipment out of the water. Faster, smoother, quieter, nice tight turning radius. Not gonna worship the brand, but heck I'll buy a JD hat at this point. Only got $30 invested in it so far.
Taryle not having this model but is it possible for one to replace it with the aluminum rearend. It would be leg work to find the proper one that fits or if there's one.
I have a LA 105 it has the aluminum transmission case.. it's one of the first before they cheapened out..
Great information definitely will be watching out for that plastic junkie transmission when I'm looking for a used riding mower sounds like deer will be turned into venison if they don't fix their act soon with these cheap plastic parts no one will want to buy them
Boy, am I glad that I bought one of those "crappy" MTD mowers 20yrs ago. It has ALL metal transmission parts, AND even though I have needed ZERO repairs, ALL parts for that transmission are STILL available, believe it or not!!
have they even changed the design of the the mechanical parts?
@@blueovalfan23 Nope I have used parts from a old Huskee on a new Troy bilt they fit all the same.
@@winggunsbp i know, if it's not broke, no need to to fix it.
I have an older mower too. It's a Dixon ram50, and has been bulletproof for me. It has been through 3 engines in its life, and is still going strong. My boss bought a zero turn with tracks on it, and has spent more time trying to get the track rollers warrantied and the deck fixed. Every 3 hours, it absolutely destroys the deck belt that he said is $225 because it's a specialty belt. I'll stick with my ol trusty rusty!
I had an Ariens, wiyh got funny plastic shifter.
It failed, but I was able to fix it.
I had a bronze bushing made and it works perfectly.
Its a shame, them general transmissions are actually pretty reliable in my experience. Fun to work on as well, and parts are available. General Transmission also has a decent website and lots of information available.
If you are cutting a small yard dont stray away from these things they work just fine!! All you gotta do is blow out the debris once every couple years. The transmissions dont have any hydrostatic fluid or cylinder blocks to wear out.
Hello To Everyone From Kentucky. I have a 165 hydro John Deere that I recently replaced a very old drive belt, idler pulleys and cooling fan for the transmission and the 1987 John Deere is still going strong. In my area, I do occasionally see the tractors in question on Marketplace for sale. What my question would be regarding the bad transmissions would be that if the recall option was a total no go - Is it possible to retrofit one of the similar aluminum case transmissions in place of the crappy plastic transmissions on the John Deere D-105?
Some time ago, I recall seeing a plastic Husqvarna transmission swapped out for the aluminum transmission on another TH-cam channel which seemed to work quite well. In this TH-cam video, I don’t think that there was a lot of modifications that had to be done to mount the aluminum transmission.
I can remember when the IH Cub Cadets had the bullet proof transmissions and when MTD bought out the Cub Cadet line from IH that they began using the aluminum casing transmissions which many thought that those transmissions would not be very good. Personally, I thank that the plastic transmissions were a terrible idea and will not be convinced otherwise. Aluminum transmissions do have their challenges too but have been around for years.
I unfortunately purchased a Craftsman 22hp lawn tractor with this transmission back in early 2015 to mow my 2 acres. I found a way to extend the life of my plastic transmission by drilling a couple holes in the back metal frame. Its where I can access the top of the transmission and back where the moving parts are and use high pressure air to blow out all the grass clippings and dirt in and around the top and back of the transmission. Those clippings and dirt cause the linkage/other components to get jammed. Also I never mow when grass is wet - it really clogs the transmission linkage fast!. I have 320 hours on the mower so far and its been working great. No parts aside from general maintenance have been replaced on the transmission or Briggs Platinum engine. I'm waiting for the transmission to go out so I can buy a zero turn...
I have the same craftsman transmission with the same problems. I made a tool with an air chuck and 11" of 1/8" copper tubing (1/4od) to fit in the existing holes in the frame but was thinking of drilling some access holes as well. Your fix is spot on, no disassembly required.
