I got it shipped a few hours back!!! Im very happy with it. mine is fine tipped. and ink flow is good and wet. edit: Vector fountain pen was my first too!
That's exactly what is happening with my original Parker Frontier with a red barrel that I bought at Barnes and Noble bookstore. The cap is loose when posted and when closed. Not sure if that's a minor fault (possibly drying out the ink) but it still writes beautifully and feels very comfortable to hold.
I first bought one of the first run Frontiers MADE IN USA. Gold plated nib and clip with two toned plastic barrel. Not as dry as the Flighter model you reviewed. I have since added to my 2 toned blue/black with the stainless, the green/black and the red/black. I also have one of the matte black models made in India for the India and Nepal markets. That one is a dry pen. I really like my Frontiers and almost always have one of them inked. They are quite inexpensive and still easy to find. Dry pens are a good choice for a left handed writer.
The Parker Frontier is one of my very favorite pens. My father gave me the pen and it has always had sentimental value to me. My pen is also rather dry but the flow is reasonable enough that I enjoy writing with it. I find the nib to be quite nice for the price of the pen. My pen has a plastic (or maybe cheap resin) barrel which they call "Marble" and what looks like a gold plated nib. Do you think I could convert the plastic barrel into an eyedropper.
sbrebrown Thanks. For everyone out there you CANNOT convert these. There is a small hole on the top of the barrel that is not really noticeable unless you fill the pen with water. However, it does leak. I suppose one could try to fill the small hole with a bit of glue but I think I will continue using the converter on mine.
My Frontier is rather wet. In fact i'm planning to grind it to make smaller line and thus put less ink on paper. It has a plastic barrel that is fragile, i found that out with a similar ballpoint pen.
Like you my first fountain pen in secondary school was a hideous bottom-of-the-range Vector, had a couple of those and got fed up with perennial inky fingers and moved up to a Frontier with a medium nib, and like you I have kept that pen ever since (about 25 years...) Mine has a dark but semi-translucent blue plastic body, I suspect because it was slightly cheaper than the stainless steel body, but actually I like it more than the steel body pens anyway because it's warm and grips well, I always find a steel body feels a bit "alien" in my hand, I'm too conscious of the pen as a separate entity, whereas this one is so comfortable I can forget it's there and focus solely on the writing. Over the years I have gone through phases of using and not using fountain pens, and consequently my Frontier has dried up and then been reactivated many many times... she takes a bit of encouragement to get her juices flowing again after being neglected (and who can blame her?), but she always gets going in the end, and getting back into her is like coming home. I was recently given a Parker Sonnet which is a much more expensive pen but I don't like it at all, the nib seems very scratchy and I can't write neatly with it, it just doesn't flow like my old faithful Frontier does. Very disappointed to find they don't seem to make them anymore; I shall have to take good care of her... but she's followed me this far, I suspect she will be with me for life.
Thank you so much sbrebrown . I am also a pen lover. But i don't have a huge collection of pens like that of your..:-P I really like the way you review all your pens. You take a Good pace and explain it very well. I already pen 4 parkers and After watching your video on frontier, I ordered it and today I finally received my 1st fountain pen, the Parker Frontier from amazon.in. I am from India and my frontier is also made in India. Its packed on 10/2014 and I feel few good modification have been done in this newer frontier. Looks and design wise its perfectly same as that of yours, but now theres no problem of the soft grip peeling off. And even in my frontier, the steel barrel is internally coated with plastic so no corrosion even if used as eyedropper. Overall I feel the pen is very well built in terms of quality and performance. The pen's nib is very smooth. And yes it's made in India. Thank you once again for all your amazing videos. Keep it up bro.
Thanks for the review sbrebrown! I don't know anything about fountain pens, just that I learned to write with one about 20 years ago. Really enjoyed the writing preview you did! I just ordered this Parker Frontier in India. It was the cheapest there and perhaps they are made there. So I'll be writing fountain again next month :)
I am very much enjoying your videos and you do indeed have very fine handwriting. I wonder sometimes if I might have a mild form of Asperger's Syndrome but I do find things like this very calming. What a labour of love all your reviews must be and I hope you have grateful viewers.
Good video ,you are right its a dry writer dry writer but I made it wetter by opening the tines and widened the ink channel in the feed .now it's wetter and I use it after a decade of not using it .
@sbrebrown The leak, if holdin. The pen nip upwards, is just below the feed, where it connects to the grip. I realise sometimes ink may seep out of there, but it is at the point where if I leave the pen for longer than an hour or two and then come to use it again, ink has managed to plaster the grip and needs wiping down.
Ah, my Parker is also a medium and a dry writer... But I actually like that because it allows me to write on standard paper without feathering or bleeding while still having a thicker-than-fine nib :)
Just yesterday I ordered a Parker Frontier from eBay, which I believe is the same as yours or the shinier metal one you mention. I'm really excited now!
I haven't used a fountain pen in years but came across your excellent reviews which have encouraged me to start again. Before I really splash out, have decided to go with a Parker Frontier, which is apparently kitted out with a gold plated nib and clip. I have also ordered a converter and Private Reserve Chocolat ink. From your experience and knowledge, how do you think this combination will go, and do you think the gold plated nib will make any difference?
Your videos are great! After my final high school exams I got the Golden Flighter Frontier, F nib. As a self-present, it arrived just on my graduation day (last thursday). Wow, it's soo smooth. Pity I hadn't discovered FPs before, it would have saved me so much effort with the BPs over the years. Will use it for University entry tests and on my college too. The cap seems to be the weakness of this model, being new mine clicks well.
i found this in purple for about 6 dollars but havent bought it yet. mine was not metal tho. my most recent acquisition was 3776 so i dont know if i would enjoy this along with those high lines.
Its really amazing that your used the fountain pen as I loved them very much but hardly find anyone back in Australia to share my thoughts as most of them looked at me with a agog look that I am such a weirdo using fountain pen
I have a frontier with gold plated nib gold cap and the top of the cap is also gold plated and it has a fine nib and skips often when I write with it. My frontier is also dry and I use Parker quink blue ink
I have the same exact model you're holding, with gold trim instead. I bought it in 2008, and I've been using it since. If only I knew what a real pen was back then...
I have one of these in my hand right now, bought as new and delivered yesterday. As far as I can see, it's pretty much the model you have here so, unless it's "new old stock" then maybe they are back in production - the cap on mine is stamped I - 11N though, if that helps. *Edit* I had the devil's own job getting this to start writing. Mine is actually a fine. I took the whole feed and nib assembly apart, flooded it with ink, with water, flushed it under pressure from a bulb syringe. Had it under a loupe. I was about to try flossing the nib as I was getting good ink flow to the breather hole whenever blotting it with tissue. Eventually I had threatened it enough and it has started writing. So yes, a dry writer is an understatement for my one. Very un-Parker - I have trillions of Parkers and this is the first one ever to be so fussy from new.
As I know , the date code IIN belongs to the period from 1988 to 1999, and it is either the 2nd quarter of 1989 or the 2nd quarter of 1999, but since the Parker Frontier debuted in 1996, so your pen is produced in 1999.

can the nib be changed using only the metal pen portion since Parker offer it e.g in Fine pont, as an assy -the metal pen and the plastic portion of the pen for 15$.Is it a cheaper replacement to buy?
i bought the matte black (gold nib) gt fountain in eBay, but im not pretty sure about the refill of ink. is the same in all frontier? like you shown in the video

@Esperantisto84 I, for a long while, used those disposable fountain pens, made by I forget who, but they tend to be a pain to find, and I could only get the 3 pack black blue and purple ink. The army only likes black ink, and I hate wasting the other two, so I have not bothered to replace mine in recent months. But I much prefer a fountain to horrid ball points.
Mr. Stephen Brown, I was most interested by that you had used this pen when writing a high school exam (in the HBO, I assume). Do you perhaps happen to remember what ink you wrote that exam with? I prefer the frontier to the urban. I have a lot of problems with the Urban. I am going to either get a noodler's or save up until i can afford a nice pen like a visconti, namiki falcon or a pelikan.
@@pragyamishra1449 in my ink flow is smooth using parker ink cartridge , sheaffer skirp but my frontier with golden nib f mentioned on it writes like Medium very confused can u help regarding it? And regarding your problem disassemble it its very easy search on youtube you'll get it if you won2 then tell me will share you the link
The pen can easily be cleaned by holding the pen with one hand, and pulling out holding gently the metal pen, with the other hand. Then after cleaning it, you just push it back in place .
Excellent review as always... Please keep doing these:) to share my experience i have a frontier from 2008 and it is a) suprisingly light and b) unbelievably dry... I dont use it at all... Not because it would be a horrible pen, but because i own a lot of better ones:) try writing with a ballpoint first and it'll feel like liberation... I suppose you dont remember what ink were you using?
I have a Frontier from my youth as well, and you're absolutely right - you build up a bond with it over the years, especially when it's directly involved in significant life events like exams. I still use mine regularly, although unfortunately it seems to have developed a minor leak of late. That's how I found this video actually; I was looking around to see if was possible to repair it, or to replace the innards. That's how much I value the thing, which was always billed as a budget pen!
Great review! I have two Parker Frontiers and find them to be comfortable, relatively inexpensive fountain pens that are smooth writers. The cap markings to which you referred at 03:30 are most likely the Parker date codes. Have a peek at the excellent website Parkerpens (dot) net (under the "Date codes and other" section of the site) to determine the year of manufacture of your own Frontier.
Nice review... I have returned mine for possible replacement due to some corrosion caused by cap on section. .. by the way you look younger in this video ;)
sbrebrown I afraid to do so , may be it is normal but I have doubt if this nib is ok or not because I did not test it before I dropped the pen , it has gap between nib (where two part of nib joint) is it normal?
I have a red plastic Frontier with a wet medium nib Had it for years and years, so long I cannot remember when I purchased it Filled it with Pelikan ink that dries very fast and does not feather A standard school boy pen
Hi, can u please tell me the exact weight, i need to know cause i am a high school student im 14 years old, so my hand is pretty small. So will the weight bother me?
I've cleaned it out with water (a time consuming process, running water through it repeatedly until no ink comes out - I think I could have built a new one in the time it took me!). I've not tried an ammonia solution though, and I don't have a bulb syringe. I'll see if I can get hold of both and give it a try; thanks for the suggestion!
I have Chelpark Quink and Camel they all work great with my pen and as well I have A chelpark pen which costs 20 indian rupees maybe 50 US cents and it is much better than Parker vector as well the Raynolds grippy fountain pen is also equivalent priced but I have been using it for years and It works perfectly I think you must have them in your collection! I think your videos really help people like us on how to go on with a pen ! Thanx!
Dude what do you do for a living? How many of these pens did you buy with your own money? No hard feelings here...just asking ;) And i love your videos.I'm learning a lot. Thanks :)
@footprintx Indeed that would be it. I'm sure I could order them online, but I'm kinda lazy and don't want to be bothered. If I must order pens online, than I will save my rupees and buy a very nice fountain pen. But then comes into play that I will forget to fill it, and not have ink at work. Not like I have a desk to just keep a bottle in. :( Ah well.
I got it shipped a few hours back!!! Im very happy with it. mine is fine tipped. and ink flow is good and wet.

Order from India..it's available everywhere in india
The modern Parkers are truly mediocre pens. It's an absolute shame.

What is the difference between this Parker Frontier and the Parker Jotter ?
@sbrebrown Well if it's dry I have seen people post they used a scalpel size 11 or something with 11 to modify the nib to make it wetter.
Ah, my Parker is also a medium and a dry writer... But I actually like that because it allows me to write on standard paper without feathering or bleeding while still having a thicker-than-fine nib :)

I am also new two fountain pens so which one of the two below do u think i should get
The nib of this pen has been ruined by me.How can I replace it in India?
Mr. Stephen Brown, I was most interested by that you had used this pen when writing a high school exam (in the HBO, I assume). Do you perhaps happen to remember what ink you wrote that exam with? Was it the good old Parker Quink, perhaps? Also, what ink did you use in the video? I don't have a purple ink yet and that ink looks quite good, so that's why I'm wondering.
Robert Andersson HBO is not a high school. I think I used Quink, yes, but unfortunately I don't remember what ink this was; I'm guessing a J. Herbin.
Thank you for all the Reviews Steve, they are really helpfull. I just ordered and received this Parker Frontier, i think i ordered it before watching your review about it, I ordered it because I liked the looks. I have got the black with matt finish. As your review suggests, its a dry pen, and my first impression was just that. But after some extended use, the ink flow has improved, and its nib is smooth too.
The problem with this pen i think is that its cap is ventilated far too much, which dries up the ink, which makes it a hard/dry starter. It would be better to plug a few holes in the cap I guess. :), what is our suggestion?

You can try that, but then you may end up creating an airtight cap that draws ink onto the section when you pull it off.
hi,i have ordered a black matte frontier..from amazon.in
parker im and parker urban.which is good?
The 117 or like this on your parker fronteir's cap is the year code. In whic that particular model made.
I have learned that since I did this video - but your input is appreciated!
I have had this for a year and a half now i absolutely love it the nib is very smooth and the barrel size is perfect :)
Hello there ,Stephen Brown, I liked the review a lot . Well I think you should also try the Jinhao 163.The quality is better than the others.
does it write very smoothly. plz tell the truth. I am from a middle class family and can't afford a bad pen. does it write too dry.
10:44
I have the frontier and im but only like to carry one pen with me at a time, out of the two which would you say is the better pen?
I think they are on par.
Okay, thanks.
please can give review of parker vector calligraphy ct fountain pen
Hi, nice review, how is the frontier weighted? I like a heavier fountain pen, how does it feel in your opinion?
It's heavier and feels great but little dry to write
That's strange, mine is super wet and also one of the smoothest pens in my collection. Also had it for years and still love to write with it :) Shame that Parker replaced it with much much worse IMs. The mark below "made in UK" is a date code.
That is my experience as well.
In India both the frontier and im are sold.
I've got this pen too, but I'm thinking of getting a cheap Japanese pen with a medium gold nib (like a Platinum PTL-5000A or a cheaper Pilot Custom). Would you say it would be much of an upgrade in terms of overall quality and smoothness?
To be honest, I don't think that would be a very noticeable upgrade.
I prefer the frontier to the urban. I have a lot of problems with the Urban. I am going to either get a noodler's or save up until i can afford a nice pen like a visconti, namiki falcon or a pelikan.
how long did you practice to get that good handwriting.my handwriting is crappy.
+Joshua Fernandes It took me a number of years to get here, and it's still not perfect.
Haha I like your sense of humor ;) Don't you use Rollerballs? I would love to have your review on all the rollerballs by Parker and Pierre Cardin.
I am getting this one next... and also I use very wet inks with dry pens...
your handwriting is so cool !!!!!.
+Joshua Fernandes Thank you.
Does the feed come off if I want to clean it? I tried it with a vector and ended up ruining the pen.
It does come out: gently unscrew it. It is NOT friction fit like the Vector's.
Parker Frontier vs Kaweco classic sport ,which one you will recommend ? This will be my first European FP , been using Pilot from start :))) ,Thankx.
+Soumyajit Sarkar For me probably the Parker Frontier
sbrebrown Thankx :))

@@pragyamishra1449 in my ink flow is smooth using parker ink cartridge , sheaffer skirp but my frontier with golden nib f mentioned on it writes like Medium very confused can u help regarding it?
And regarding your problem disassemble it its very easy search on youtube you'll get it if you won2 then tell me will share you the link
i was just wondering what the weight of the pen might be... do u know?
Not from the top of my head but it's fairly light.
I have a fine nib frontier, and it is the most wet fine nib I've ever used. Infact it was so wet, on most papers there's bleed through.
Is it flexible?
any difference in the feed of vector and frontier?
i am confused between the two which one would u recommend?
same confusion now, for me..lol
The nib is also quite different.
The pen can easily be cleaned by holding the pen with one hand, and pulling out holding gently the metal pen, with the other hand. Then after cleaning it, you just push it back in place .
is it a medium nib fountain pen?
The one sbrebrown has is a medium, the pen comes in different nib sizes.
Does a zebra G nib "fit" on a parker frontier?
Probably not
Excellent review as always...
It's an older video :-).
sbrebrown I dropped my nib just after unboxing pen, now It is not running as smooth as you mentioned :(
sbrebrown I afraid to do so , may be it is normal but I have doubt if this nib is ok or not because I did not test it before I dropped the pen , it has gap between nib (where two part of nib joint) is it normal?
As I said before, a small gap is normal. If your pen writes, it's fine.
I have a red plastic Frontier with a wet medium nib
Had it for years and years, so long I cannot remember when I purchased it
Filled it with Pelikan ink that dries very fast and does not feather
A standard school boy pen
Hi, can u please tell me the exact weight, i need to know cause i am a high school student im 14 years old, so my hand is pretty small. So will the weight bother me?
It's very light, so that shouldn't be a problem.
Yasin Khan I got mine when I was 11, I'm now 21 and still have small hands. It's light and small and perfect for little hands!
Is it really necessary to use Quink ink for parker pens?
And they still make or sell it?
I have a Parker Frontier Stainless Steel with fine nib. Continues to work very well.
I've cleaned it out with water (a time consuming process, running water through it repeatedly until no ink comes out - I think I could have built a new one in the time it took me!). I've not tried an ammonia solution though, and I don't have a bulb syringe. I'll see if I can get hold of both and give it a try; thanks for the suggestion!
can u please tell me the weight of the pen?
Tairthik Mandal No, sorry. I don't have this pen anymore.
may be 50g..lol
Thanks, its a good review :)
Hey I have same pen which has F written on back of it's nib . What does it say? Can you help?
What difference it makes?
You have amazing handwriting
Dry is an under statement. Took me 1/2 is to get ink flowing
Thanx!
u have got beautiful handwriting , did u have had calligraphy classes ?
+silas Thank you, but no, I haven't
This pen is almost indistinguishable from the new Parker Sonnet lineup.
Dude what do you do for a living? How many of these pens did you buy with your own money? No hard feelings here...just asking ;)
And i love your videos.I'm learning a lot.
Thanks :)
I have the other Parker you had
I have one with a gold plated nib
It does dry. I have one too.
@footprintx
Indeed that would be it. :( Ah well.
