Oh, and the other major potential drawback that I forgot to mention in the video is that with the complicated design, these lenses are known to be a little bit more delicate and require servicing more often than other lenses. And finding a good service house can be difficult due to the complex mechanism.
@@xelmusanamorphics that comment about service is something I am passing along from multiple rental houses who own your beautiful lenses, and multiple high-level DPs who work with them as well. They all gave me that information based on their history with the lenses, but I apologize if I've misstated something. In my brief experience with them, they are incredible. And I would REALLY love to test the new Aura set (or any v3 Apollos) if you have any interest in more of this kind of coverage for them!!! 🙂You have my email address, feel free to reach out 🙂
@@dsw8456 no Xelmus still takes orders for new lenses. They continue to make Apollo, which recently got 24mm and 180mm focal lengths added to the set. And a few days ago they launched Aura, a new Super35 set with the same focusing mechanism.
I’ve been waiting for this one! You’re currently one of my favorite reviewers next to CVP. Just wanted to shout out that I appreciate your unbiased and logical approach to reviews as well as the research and knowledge that you bring to the space!
They look amazing. I think this next year, there is going to be a mayor competition between brands trying to design similar optical architectures to Panavision C series on a "budget". Thanks for showing these spectacular lenses.
That’s exactly why as much as I’m tempted by the Blazar stuff coming out, they still don’t match the complex flaring my Aivascopes can produce. The Apollos are my dream lenses. Just butter! And that they make these in a country under extreme duress right now is just bonkers.
To this list should be added the new anamorphic lenses of LOMO, or rather the Schwabe Corporation. The announcement will take place in mid-2024. But unfortunately, the maximum aperture will be only T2.0. But the price is no more than 5,000 dollars per piece and 19900 for a set of 5. By design, representatives and engineers are still silent, but they hint that this is exactly what we are thinking about.
Thank you! The Raptor clips were mostly shot in 8k 1:1 mode. Full height of the sensor but in square format, which desqueezes to 2:1. The Sony clips were shot in 16:9 because that’s the only option, then cropped in post.
@@nick_salazar Never knew Red cameras could shoot in 1:1. By “more than full frame” imaging circle do you mean around vista vision, or even larger? It would be interesting to see anamorphic that work on medium format, I think the gfx100ii has a anamorphic de squeeze in camera or something.
The larger the focal length the greater the imaging area (and I say "area" because they aren’t circles but more like wobbly rectangles). The longer ones cover Alexa 65 and beyond. But you get more weirdness out at the edges of course. You can see the coverage areas on the Xelmus website: www.xelmus.com/apollo
Nick, I like the stigmatism/seperation that panavision produces best, in addition to its barrel distortion but not a fan of the flares of any kind, which the Xelmus also produces. Do you have any suggestion for me? There's Remus but everyone says they're low resolution (and they're 1.5x) and the separation is not exactly like panavision. Is there anything better in this range? (between remus and xelmus)
Check out the Laowa Proteus. Lots of resolution, 2x stretch, almost no flares. Especially the silver version. I posted a video about them a while back.
Been waiting for this one! Did this sway you in any direction as far as considering purchasing one in the future? Love the multiple flare elements in counter rotating Astigmatised lenses. Atlas just announced a new lens set called Gemini that apparently has a similar focus design. Hoping those, Aura, or some other 3rd party can release a counter rotating astigmatised lens sub $10k in the next few years... A man can dream
I saw it on the Anamorphic Shooters facebook page, someone posted from Camerimage about the Aura and the Gemini. "Accordingly to the Seminar, Gemini use an focus astigmatism design, but not counter astigmatism. Scott their lead engineer says it has much more tolerance if it gets misaligned slightly (focus is off in Panavision from 1/3 of a degree instead with Gemini the tolerance is 1-3 degrees)." It was confirmed by Dan Kanes that they were 2x and that flares were yet to be determined, he asked for flare opinions(of which were many and conflicting). He didn't respond to any questions about sensor coverage. I'm hoping either they or the new Xelmus come in at under $10k but I'm not exactly holding my breath. Still though, exciting times!
It’s universal. Same for my videos. That’s when usually 70% of the audience jumps ship.

Hey Nick! :) have you tried the vazen fullframe lenses? I have a feeling you might like them. For me thay are pricewise perfect now and the look and flare are just beautiful.
But if you love them that’s awesome! Don’t let a grumpy old man like me tell you any differently :-)

@@nick_salazar i am not a fan either of their smaller lenses like the 28,40 and so on but the full frame ones 50mm, 85mm, and 135mm are something else imo. Witzki Visions uses the smaller ones btw and he has awesome content, so for me they are pretty underrated :)
Personally the budget anamorphics aren't my cup of tea. But if they'd help you, don't let a grumpy guy like me put you off of them! Or ... if you yearn for something better, just save your money. One great lens is superior to six bad ones.
@@nick_salazar yes, much cheaper than the Cooke, for sure. Filmed my music video with Cooke anamorphic, and was sold.
