The reason anamorphic lenses first got introduced to hollywood was because filmmakers had to start to compete with TV. The only differentiation at the time that they could think of was a wider frame. This started out by using wider film strips, but this meant resolution was lowered as 2 perf film is kind of like adding black bars now. So instead they tried making bigger film (65mm, and 70mm). However that was incredibly expensive for what most productions needed. So anamorphic meant you could use normal 35mm film in 4 perf, whilst getting a wider field of view. Originally, the anamorphic look was actually perceived as cheap by a lot of filmmakers, and stretched flares and oval bokeh was usually minimised by DP's. That's why if you watch a film like the original blade runner, you'll see absolutely no anamorphic flares at all, and for the most part, a very deep DOF

You also won’t see any anamorphic in Blade Runner sequel - Roger Deakins clearly said that he never use anamorphic. Yet he is one of the gratest cinematographers who uses…. How did Matti called them - boring lenses? ;-)

I just want to say this feels like a really really natural progression for Matti and his channel. He’s not chasing the newest trend, he’s just come to a point in his career where he’s looking for new avenues. It’s really nice to see him discovering new possibilities and not under the hand of sensationalism. He’s just having a good time. And so are we!

The boring 'old' "perfect" lenses is why people still buy older lenses. They have such interesting characteristics to them. The Tamron 70-200mm has some really unique bokeh to it. And, of course you can look at Helios and also Lensbaby for different characteristics of lenses as well. This is why I love having adapters. And you see people adapt super weird lenses. One guy made a lens out of ice and managed to get a couple of shots with it before it melted. Hahaha. It was so cool!!

The Mercury’s compact form and 1.5 squeeze is fantastic for a light set up and 16:9 sensors. The lenses will give unique edge distortion when shooting full frame, especially open gate full frame. Basically the choice of shooting s35, full-frame, open gate, or large format will result in different looks suitable for different projects. A lot of versatility to experiment with! Thanks for the video Matti! We have entered a new golden age of anamorphic ☺️

Iron Glass makes the Helios 44-2 MKii with PL mount, that's the one they used on The Batman. Also in the market for Anamorphic and Atlas seem to be the best in the sub $10K range. Xelmus Apollos come close but are a bit more. Then straight to Cooke 2x. Saw the new Laowa Proteus at Cine Expo, pretty dope as well, but different from the Atlas

When anamorphic lenses were invented for surveillance purposes, movies were shot 4-perf 4:3 aspect ratio - the same as then TV as well. Well, movies wanted to differentiate themselves to stand OUT from the same TV image people could get in their homes, and used these to get the wider aspect ratio while using the same 4-perf film. TV was a box - but MOVIES were WIDESCREEN!
The thing I love, more than anything else, isn't the bokeh, or the flares (both are nice, but not the REAL selling point for me), but the distinct separation from foreground to background. It really SEPARATES the subject from the background in a way most people just can't put their finger on. It really makes someone STAND OUT from their background.

Another thing to keep in mind, is the Mercury's cover full frame sensor, so would generally be a better fit with the Alexa LF, since you can shoot in open gate and wouldn't need to crop sides. The Orion's are super 35 coverage (plus a little more depending on taste) so match well with the Alexa35. You can definitely shoot full frame with them, and you'll gain a little more of the top and bottom, but they will vignette the full frame sensor, so additional cropping is required. All that being said, the Orion's are popular due to that 2x squeeze providing that classic super35 2x stretch the 70s made so so popular. Good luck with your purchase and your new Alexa!
