I have one of those and I never use it to much. It works however in my case i did have a difficulty because here in Europe all ropes are in metric sizes and I not able to find one that that match exactly what is recommended.
Its USA Assembled, BUTTZ!! with parts coming from who knows where? = TOO Glitchy, have also heard that a specific part (unknown) can fail after only a FEW uses, not being able tell exactly when the 3-strand rope, or a certain part might give way, I returned mine even Before opening the box & bought a Wyeth Scott unit.
I have the same rope with mine, looks like. I've had the same experience, having to keep it snugged up really tight on the tail end before it will grab. Somehow I want to blame the rope, but I really don't know. Makes me a little nervous, really.
It has the same result regardless of holding tension.. seems to be a system design flaw or maybe I am just still the user causing error ? I don’t use it anymore regardless.

Try looping it one more time
It is a big problem. Under pressure it works great. When the pressure releases the rope just pulls out. When you work by yourselves you are screwed.
Never had a problem with mine……yet.

The rope looks too thick.

You blew it when you let go of the tail before starting to ratchet. Keep tension on the tail end when you start your ratcheting.

Did the rope come with the puller?
It was the manufacturer’s recommendation for what rope to use
Did you try to feed the rope from the "top" (i.e. through the metal loop) first? th-cam.com/video/kz9Y5UaV-HM/w-d-xo.html
Yes many times also no success unfortunately
Get the rope tight as you can before start ratcheting
