@@stealthbeastgaming Fun fact: there is a glitch you can do with the hat and a warp that results in Mario carrying his cap around instead of wearing it. Makes you look like you slap people with the hat.
@@NintenDeen What you do is you first loose your hat in a way that leaves it sitting on the ground somewhere. Then you use a warp repeatedly. Every time you use the warp, it multiplies the hat on the ground. If you pick up the hat, there will still be a pile of hats on the ground. If you step into the pile just right (do it slowly), he will try to pick up all the hats at once and it will glitch out the animation of putting it back on, resulting in him carrying the hat instead of wearing it. It's easiest to do this in Snowman's Land when the snowman blows you off the bridge.
Fun fact about this level, you don't see those boxes with faces again [called Tox Boxes] until super mario galaxy 1 or 2,they didn't really make appearances after that, same with the mummified thwomps inside the pyramid [called Grindel Tiles] .
Tick Tok Clock is the worse 100 coin star actually. Preventing coins from falling into the void when you kill enemies is near impossible to reliably do.
this is false as there are literally only two killable enemies (two bob omb at the bottom, the other remaining enemies are unkillable and don't give coins (heave-hos and amps)) that give you (TWO) coins, the level's coins are obtained using the blue coin switch which has 35 FREE coins combine this with the 8 red coins that are easily obtainable when time is stopped (16 COINS), along with the multiple exclamation boxes that give you 10 COINS, the level totals to 126 coins giving you more than enough room for mistakes
@bl0cky64 It's possible I didn't stop the clock and inadvertently made it harder on myself, but I do remember coins falling into the void scores of times, and being unable to find any more in the level to get to 100.
For me it was Rainbow Ride. TTC has a lot of verticality, so if you miss a jump, it's possible you'll land on one of the lower platforms, but there's less of that in RR on top of lots of long, boring carpet rides.
@@Kage999at least in those maps if you lose a life you don't risk to have yourself trapped in a specific area that doesn't have all the coins you need, forcing you to either get a star or a game over
I don't really see it that way. If anything, Mario 64 was pretty well restrained when it comes to this type of game development style of the time. The collectathon games. They wanted to put meaningful content tucked away in the crevices of the game that not all players will, or even should, find. Understanding that some stars are more arduous for some players then others is the brilliance of their unlocking system. If you're frustrated with a stage, go to a different one to get the stars you need to keep making progress and come back when you're a better player with a cooled off temper. This is highlighted by the fact that proper completion of the game requires a measly 70 stars, and that the most arduous stars are usually loaded into the final stars of a stage, usually requiring intimate map knowledge to access. It's a beautifully elegant way to keep the skill floor low for beginners and the skill ceiling high for people who become passionate about exploring every nook and cranny to the level without going the Banjo Kazooie route of putting tons of meaningless shit over the surface area of every single map that you absolutely need to collect to make progress. And even Banjo Kazooie wasn't the most egregious example of its time.
As a kid I beat Banjo Tooie before Banjo Kazooie just due to how many notes you needed to fight Grunty. The Rusty Bucket Bay and Click Clock Wood ones were crazy for a kid.
How about drowning? That “traumatized” me as a kid (definitely not really) but it made me avoid the water levels until I was older like 5 years old vs 4 lol
I loved the quicksand and whirlpool cause they were the only “insta-kill” methods that played both Mario’s falling scream and Bowser’s evil laugh together.
@@roddydykes7053 I was just about to say drowning as well. Just recently I drowned on purpose in dire dire docks and I lowkey got chills. Not something you would expect to hear in a Mario game for sure
Shifting Sand Land isn't my favorite stage, but it does have my favorite variation of the underground theme inside the pyramid. It also has one of my favorite boss battles in hand to hand combat in the game.
First time I discovered the secret pyramid star I was going backwards from the sand river and noticed the numbers appearing, we looked up from the end of the river and saw the three platforms and realized you had to climb everything to jump down, it was the worst.
Most definitely a challenging stage. Shifting Sand Land's difficulty is a 4/5 due to difficulty spike. ironically, Wet Dry World is difficult to lose a life in. Reason: Mario can simply jump in the water to regain all health and have nearly infinite attempts.
It's not really relevant, but it's actually possible to fall into the gap in the wall that leads to the boss fight. I used to do it that way. You hang on the edge, drop off, then hold up and Mario will be able to hang onto the opening.
the stars inside it were a nightmare to get and im saying this who has played the game last year and is going to start it up again later on. i should watch your tall tall mountain video since thats the last level i left off i bet your video would teach me what i need to know about it.
The way the quicksand maze was a trail of adjacent blocks always reminded me of those crossword puzzles. I bet you could come up with one using the shape of the maze, and where all of the answers are Super Mario themed!
i always prefered using the shell to touch the 4 pillars... i think it's probably harder than using the wing cap (especially the one in the instant death sand) but it's a fun challenge
I loved the interior of the pyramid, but far too much of the exterior map consisted of quicksand IMO. Would have been interesting if the took more of a rocky canyon aesthetic.
Obligatory "I loved surfing on the turtle shell on this level" comment. It's good for the TH-cam algorithm. I tried suggesting on the other video, but you should do an analysis on each of the levels on Metroid Prime. Great stuff! Fun fact: This game is probably why I play with an inverted y-axis.
Mario without a hat takes extra damage.
That's more of a side stat. The primary stat is, "Nobody wants Mario without a hat, that's just weird".
@@stealthbeastgaming Fun fact: there is a glitch you can do with the hat and a warp that results in Mario carrying his cap around instead of wearing it. Makes you look like you slap people with the hat.

I would say rainbow road is the worst 🌈

I always called those red bricks you have to swing over in the pyramid hotdogs.
😂
this map was so trippy as a kid.
I could never really find my way around it or explore it all
Is it just me, or is the sound that plays whenever Mario dies in quicksand really is one of the most haunting sounds Super Mario 64 has to offer?
Oh yeah, definitely
How about drowning? That “traumatized” me as a kid (definitely not really) but it made me avoid the water levels until I was older like 5 years old vs 4 lol

What about Mario dying of poison gas?
Let's Talk About NIGHTMARE FUEL POKEYS
The pokeys are SO lifeless in this game 😂
i use to like punching them as a kid because it amazed me how the game would make them smaller and they would lose a piece getting hit.
I don’t see what makes them so creepy to other people
Shifting Sand Land isn't my favorite stage, but it does have my favorite variation of the underground theme inside the pyramid. It also has one of my favorite boss battles in hand to hand combat in the game.
The brick pillars be able to be run up is really inconsistent with the rest of the game
Yeah the only other moment I can think of is the vertical walkway in the final Bowser stage
@2:55 More than that , Mario will take more damage if he doesn’t have his hat
True. I actually didn't know this until mid 2010s because I never actually lost the hat long enough to find out

Oh wow. I actually recall this music. I think I liked this level.
It's the same music as lava land too haha

Yeah I think the wind skip alone at the start of TTM would save a whole lot of struggles for most players
10:30 Rainbow Ride would like a word.
Just discovered your channel, enjoying this series. Subscribed.
Thanks! More to come :)
I grew up on the DS version, but deadass I would intentionally get Mario's hat stolen for fun and then do a bunch of stages without it lmao\
Yeah I think I remember doing this once
Bro is on a wild upload schedule, keep it up :)

It is possible Eyerok could be a desert Golem protecting star 4
i always prefered using the shell to touch the 4 pillars... i think it's probably harder than using the wing cap (especially the one in the instant death sand) but it's a fun challenge
I used to use the shell but the flying is easier and quicker and easier lol. The shell gimmick is one of the most enjoyable ones in the game though
0:56 the lava land is the same song
Correct!
