I can understand why fans of the books are frustrated by the differences, but honestly I adore the movies.
Comparing random silly still-frames from the movie to a bunch of animations inspired by the book would be like me showing action scenes from the movie and then a single instance of the word "poop" from the book.
I think you should give the full name of the book in the title, as many people don't know the full form of httyd. Might give more views and attract morepeople to the books.
I prefer the movie versions and I'm so sick of people saying that the book versions based on the movie versions are better seriously the movie versions of them have better adaptations character designs and changes.
They really were forces of nature. It's stated multiple times that, if it weren't for a virus that erased 99% of the dragon population over 200 years ago, they would have been the dominant species instead of humans.
I read most of the series as a kid, and loved every minute of it, but I never did read the final novel. By the time it came out I had grown up and moved on to other things. Judging by what some of the other comments here have implied about the ending, maybe that was a blessing in disguise?
@@sspah6870 The movies are beautiful in their own right but it's very different franchise from the books. Here's my "cynical" take: The movies cherry pick names, erase characters and themes and setup a very different message. It does not treat the books with the "respect" that one might expect in regards to the original media. DreamWorks capitalized on Cowell's names, work and universe while cannibalizing some of it's main goals, themes and characters. My more "optimistic" take: The movies take the essence of what made the books cool and puts a wonderful unique spin on things, they are beautiful works of art and do the books justice. Few other thoughts I have: The movies are a let down if you really enjoyed the book series and we're hoping for a more 1.1 adaptation. Not saying book people can't enjoy the movies or movie people won't enjoy the books. Just saying a subset of people may be sad they changed so many things that made the books interesting and great, even if the movies did have Cowell's blessing and creative input. I still feel angry about Httyd3 (probably not the only one) and how it shoehorns a the books ending onto a completely different story and hamstrings all future Httyd media in the process. Httyd3 consequently puts a damper on the whole franchise for me that I didn't have in 2018. I would love a series more true to the books but if DreamWorks did that audience would be like: This isn't the toothless I know, why is fishlegs not like fishlegs? No NightFurys?!?WHAT DO YOU MEAN THE DRAGONS TALK??? LLL that's soooo childish, bad series doesn't build on the movies smh. I feel that the community DreamWorks has built is expecting a very specific thing, and when it doesn't get what it was hoping for it's often disappointed. *EDIT: added the words "I feel" "often" sorry for my overarching statement here, should have been worded differently looking back, sorry future readers. I think Rescue Riders is a great spinoff series, well done with good characters and treats it's 7-10 year old target audience with the whimsy and care they deserve, while introducing them to the movie universe in a respectful way. I think Nine Realms is a massive rushed oversight that is 3 years ahead of schedule and no one has enough nostalgia for it not to be brutally compared the AAA big budget movies it spawned from. It's clumsy and takes waaay to long for most people to have a chance of getting remotely invested in it's characters and future success. I don't think it's the *worst* show, just strangely lack luster and...oddly managed/thought out. Also the fact that if Httyd3 ending was truly respected by DreamWorks (ie not making a series afterwards that looks suspiciously like a cash grab) we would not see *any* serious Httyd media is saddening to think about if it's a property you enjoy. I'm not exactly "happy" with Star Wars being changed by new content, but at least new generations of filmmakers get a *chance* to make something cool and add to the lore. Sorry that this turned into a rant, but I did want to share why some of the reasons some might be dissatisfied (myself included) even with all the wins that both the movies and books achieve. I love how Toothless is portrayed in the books, but the movies were what I saw first and I probably like them a bit more atm._
@@NickelLight I saw the first movie when I was 5, and loved it, years and years go by where I continue watching the film, still loving it as much as the first time. It's easily my favourite movie. I also liked every other movie and tv show based on the franchise. Except the nine realms, which infuriated me greatly. I remember reading some of the books when I was younger, it was jarring at first, realising the books were so different. Although I liked them in the end. As for the httyd 3 ending, I thought it felt natural when I was watching it, and looking back on it, I still think it was a great ending. I can understand why book readers may be agitated by how dreamworks changed everything, but it's clear that the people who actually made the movies themselves cared a lot about the franchise. The movies, at least the first one, also showcased a lot of the art from the books if I'm not mistaken, so I think the creators did respect the books. I don't know that's just my personal opinion, I'm not supporting dreamworks as a corporation or anything, I know how big companies function based on greed and all that. Who knows, maybe one day we'll get a movie or tv show following the books. I just like to look at them as their two separately amazing pieces of fiction.
Being honest, if Camakazi was in the movies/animated series she and Astrid would be best friends... then worst enemies the moment it came to hiccup Also... she has a japanese term for a name so something tells me her clan studied t he blade and somehow ended up faaaar, faaar away from the norwegian coastline. Just imagine her and Astrid fighting over Touma, it would make any spat she had with Heather look like a joke and AStrid is based on Camkazi and yes im still getting her name wrong. "You're constantly being saved by Hiccup and falling off your dragon, I saved his stupid butt at least 10 times, and then I stopped counting." (sorry can't think of a good comeback for astrid at the mo someone wanna pick up for me?)
I originally wanted to say sorry to those I might have insulted with my words, but now thinking about it, I don't want to apologise for stating my opinion. It belongs to me and I cherish it for being uniquely mine. Maybe I should have used better words to express my feelings towards the movies and Dreamworks, but it doesn't matter anymore.
Fair enough. Personally I think the movies are incredible and one of the best trilogies and animated movies ever, but I can’t expect every single one of the tens of millions of people who have watched them to share those same feelings. I’ll defend that they’re great movies but It’s understandable that different people will have different perspectives on them, and I shouldn’t get mad at people even if they also get pissy about it. Haven’t read the books yet, although I think some of them are at my parents house so I might try reading them at some point. Regardless they’re both different stories and while people can argue which one’s better we should really be greatful that we got to have two different long running stories that most agree are both great.

I need to buy de full colection and make a altar
Honestly this was the best book series i ever read i was obsessed with it
Comparing random silly still-frames from the movie to a bunch of animations inspired by the book would be like me showing action scenes from the movie and then a single instance of the word "poop" from the book.
I haven't read the books, but i will assume that the accents are on point and similar to one another(unlike the movies).
This comment makes me feel that you have no idea on how books work
@@ilyassebenana3824 I'm guessing both you and i are just joking.
@@bautistabarabino5821 i dont get your joke
@@wellidontknow1941 do you remember how awesome the soundtrack was in the movies?
Well, it was even better in the books.
@@friendlystickbug7863 sorry but i disagree;i find the soundtrack of the books very lackluster.
I think you should give the full name of the book in the title, as many people don't know the full form of httyd. Might give more views and attract morepeople to the books.
There were 12 books, good idea but I can only put the titles in the description
@@KoryAnder No i mean call it "how to train your dragon" in the title instead of "HTTYD"
Movie.
I prefer the movie versions and I'm so sick of people saying that the book versions based on the movie versions are better seriously the movie versions of them have better adaptations character designs and changes.
The books were fucking wild
Maybe the real dragons were the friends we made along the way.
Have read the first 8 books growing up, they're COMPLETELY different
I remember my dad buying me httyd book along with horrid henry during the early 2000s
The books had some really scary and unexplainable dragons and I liked that
They really were forces of nature. It's stated multiple times that, if it weren't for a virus that erased 99% of the dragon population over 200 years ago, they would have been the dominant species instead of humans.
Also the Darkbreather dragon. I imagine it to be like the Anantashesha of HTTYD and I wished we got to see it.
DUDEE I READ ALL THE BOOKS AS A KID
As someone who had the books read to him as a child, can confirm
Yep, animation smears look really weird.
I read most of the series as a kid, and loved every minute of it, but I never did read the final novel. By the time it came out I had grown up and moved on to other things.
Judging by what some of the other comments here have implied about the ending, maybe that was a blessing in disguise?
Perhaps
No read it. It will crush your soul, but it is still amazing.
This is basically Scotland Folklore vs Germany Folklore
I would like they bring the sea dragon to a movie one day
so this is where all the httyd movie haters are
Grow up
@@KoryAnder literally just making an observation because I haven't seen haters of the series before.
@@sspah6870 me neither, until now
@@sspah6870 The movies are beautiful in their own right but it's very different franchise from the books.
Few other thoughts I have:
The movies are a let down if you really enjoyed the book series and we're hoping for a more 1.1 adaptation.
I'm get so many flames for saying this, but although it's not canon Hiccami > Hicstrid.
Being honest, if Camakazi was in the movies/animated series
she and Astrid would be best friends... then worst enemies the moment it came to hiccup
Also... she has a japanese term for a name so something tells me her clan studied t he blade and somehow ended up faaaar, faaar away from the norwegian coastline.
Just imagine her and Astrid fighting over Touma, it would make any spat she had with Heather look like a joke and AStrid is based on Camkazi and yes im still getting her name wrong.
"You're constantly being saved by Hiccup and falling off your dragon, I saved his stupid butt at least 10 times, and then I stopped counting."
(sorry can't think of a good comeback for astrid at the mo someone wanna pick up for me?)
Always pissed me off how the only similarities are the goddamn name. Films that do this like World War Z are so stupid.
I have read these books so many times...
I was re reading the books and when I got to book 7 I was surprised how dark things got
Proud owner of the whole series.
Bro had to scour the movie for smear frames to make it look bad😭
Didn't even know there were books
POV: Where snotlout?
Book 11 was the best. Snotlout's final character arc was truly amazing yet heartbreaking. He was a true hero
@@KoryAnder F you for reminding me
