You don't have to hope you're helpful, Anne. You are ALWAYS helpful. Thanks so much for this channel. You're making a difference beyond just the music.
I watched about 5 minutes of this video and am more convinced than ever that after all the incredible hours of work a non-published composer puts in his or her work, they still have to go hat in hand to get any sort of recognition or performance. BUT REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR WORK ANNE-KATHRIN. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH FOR ALL YOU DO!!!!
Immensely helpful! We always see that question on Perspective - "how do I get an agent? How do I know who is the right agent for me?" And the answers are always a little "smack down" like - YOU WON'T GET AN AGENT UNTIL YOU DON'T NEED ONE, you need to be making x amount of money, DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT U PEASANT, etc. You explained it MUCH better and more compassionately. "When they feel like they can sell you" is a perfect explanation that sums up the reality of the business.
Indeed! It's also something many people ask me in private messages but I've seen that question all the time on Perspectives as well. I too always found the answers a bit harsh or insulting without providing a proper explanation. There are certainly other factors I've left out, like them connecting with you as a person, seeing potential in your artistry, etc. but this was the most pragmatic explanation I could put together I think.
Great insight, as always! I appreciate that you demystified the role of agents/managers to us who haven't had the 1st hand experience with these professions before.
Thank you Anne, You are such an inspiration and a wealth of information, opening doors to a closed industry. I'm so glad i subscribed to your channel of videos.
Great video!!! This is exactly why I love your videos so much!!! You explain us things as they are, with personal anecdotes and insights. There's a lot of valuable info in every one of them. Wish there was something like this when I started, way back, in 1996. You're the best. 👏👏👏
Hi Anne, First of all, thank you for your insights! I found your channel for the first time a couple of days ago and I'm already a fan! I gotta tell you... the depth of your knowledge on music is amazing. I'm 52 and really just dabbling in this realm for the past year and I'm overwhelmed by how much there is to learn. It would be amazing if you put out a paid course for beginners like me although it doesn't seem an endeavor as this may fit with your busy schedule. That being said, I would happily pay for an online course or series of courses by you and believe that MANY others would too - especially to be instructed by someone as gifted and knowledgable as yourself! I also appreciate your down-to-earth style and humility which makes the channel all the more enjoyable and accessible. Please don't give too much credence to negative comments or complainers that don't agree with your thoughts/reviews. Your honest comments are what many of us really need and genuinely benefit from. I was seriously considering buying a particular library until I heard your thoughts on it. You basically saved me a couple of hundred bucks in the process. When I heard the libraries you preferred... it was clear the products you recommended were far superior to what I nearly purchased. Again, thank you! You're going to have 50K subscribers before you know it! Honestly, I believe this channel will grow exponentially in the coming months because the content is next level gold! Glad I was able to comment while there is still a chance my comment may be seen by you... before you have way more comments/followers than you could possibly respond to. If you happen to do another Composer Q & A... "What aspect of your work do you find most rewarding?"
Thank you for these kind words! I'm so glad you enjoy the channel and find the information provided useful. I might do a paid course in the future but I'm not sure how I can fit that into my schedule yet. It would probably have to be select masterclasses or workshops - the kind I occasionally give at different colleges and conservatories around the world. I'm happy my reviews saved you some money - of course I only present my own opinions but if it helps, then all the better. I will add your question to my list of Q&A requests - thanks for chiming in!
I stumbled on one of your videos about a week ago and have since subscribed and watched all the tips & Tutorial videos and many of the interviews and composition ones (and will probably watch most, if not all, of those). I also bought the books you recommended (that I didn’t already have). Needless to say, I have become a big fan! You are intelligent, knowledgeable, articulate, and down-to-earth. I like your music, I like your approach (distain for loops, etc.) and the videos are well-organized and efficient (something that can’t be said for most “tutorials”). I even like the way you start your videos with a SoCal scene (my former stomping grounds). And I like how you aren’t afraid to express your opinion. Obviously, I hope you do more! And thank you for what you have done so far!!
Thank you so much for your kind words! I really appreciate it :-) I'm really happy you find my videos useful. I'll be sure to make more! Thanks for chiming in!
First of all: Love that you're doing all this insightful content from inside the business, from all kinds of angles: Technical, craft, "politics". One off-topic thing, and I genuinely hope you don't mind: That is some really beautiful makeup that suits you so well! Also: What's that yellow Floppy drive in the background? :D
@@AnneKathrinDernComposer Oh, clever. I honestly use my MacBooks as coasters. That aluminium is just super easy to clean and heat resistant (unless you're talking Space Shuttle re-entry temperatures).
Thank you for your videos! They are very motivating and full of very good tips. I have a question about location of movie composer. It is 2021 so do you think that it is vital to live in L.A., or Paris or London to boost your career? I guess that would require a lot of travelling. Would you work yourself with somebody who doesn't live in the same city or country? Not that L.A. doesn't look attractive, as I can see on the intro of each of your video😆 Merry Christmas and happy new year to you!
Funny enough I just recorded a video titled "Location" so that will be coming up within the next 2 weeks. The answer is fairly long and hopefully nuanced to go over many aspects of that question.
Hey Anne, amazing video as always! I have one question...who are the responsable for collecting royalties and distribute the shares with you and assistant composers? I always thought that the publisher/editor would take care of that and your phonograms (ISRC and such). I am probably mistaken the publisher and publicists roles, right? Thx so much!
Hey Anne, great video! I was wondering if you could do a video on what orchestrators do. I know that they have to convert your DAW work to sheet music, but what else do they do? Thanks a lot!
Generally speaking, which is more important - the quality/skill of the music, or credits on impressive films/projects? I feel like this question can be a whole video :)
This video was very, very interesting, and I would definitely watch a follow-up going into more detail on this particular topic. Cheers, Anne-Kathrin, and Merry Christmas&Happy New Year!
Glad you liked it. If I'm going to do a follow-up, I would need specific questions to focus on since I don't know what else people want to know. Otherwise I can also address any questions in my next Q&A. Anything specific you'd like to know more about? Thanks for chiming in!
@@AnneKathrinDernComposer mmm, I am thinking about how to prepare for meeting with an agent/manager for the first time, after they made initial contact. How to make sure that one can really be a good candidate to join their roster
Hi, thanks for information, relly helpful. I wondering if you have some video (or an idea for a new one), about how to present the final work to directors; formats, notes, papers, mail, software, or other tips about that. Thanks again!
Hi Anne, yes, I was asking for the final stage. What the directors expect to receive from you. I am thinking, maybe, in the formal presentation of the score, or audio files, or tips.
Very informative video really appreciate your effort! 🙏 Have a question regarding that if you dont mind.. The body of work required you mention for an agent to sign you for a film should consist of feature films mostly or quality past work on students films, freelancing and features on media with decent reach could also help?
Thanks for watching! First off, an agent doesn't sign you for a film. An agent just signs you onto their roster which doesn't mean there's work coming your way. You'll still have to find that yourself and then they negotiate the deal for you. As far as past credit: Student films wouldn't be enough to get you signed I believe. You could have a bunch of indie features, maybe some of which made it into big film festivals like Sundance or Cannes. Maybe you landed a studio production yourself. Maybe have a few mid-level TV shows or some success in the streaming world. Sometimes though, an agent might also simply connect with your artistry and want to support your career. It's all a bit subjective and varies from agent to agent. It's partially about your body of work, your artistry, and years of experience but it's also in large part your fees. If you're working on ultra low budget productions, then how would an agent ever get enough return on investment when they take their percentage?
yeah I'm staying far far away from the entertainment industry, I love film music and music related to media, but I found that doing it yourself isn't as fun as hearing what others do.
You don't have to hope you're helpful, Anne. You are ALWAYS helpful. Thanks so much for this channel. You're making a difference beyond just the music.
