So that small story at 3:40 when examining the bookcase is actually from Earthbound. In the game, there's a small house in Onett you can buy and it has the story there if I'm remembering it correctly.

Some joke explanations:
- The joke with the "unable to modify the rom" is bc the og dialogue is "caterpie can't hack it"
-10u is a theoretical smogon tier for competitive RBY where only 6 pokemon are legal, being weedle, kakuna, caterpie, metapod, magikarp, and ditto
-the speech from that one trainer is a reference to a dude who ragequit during a major showdown tournament
-Other than just being a reference to the tcg, the gym is based on the tcg video game, the scyther is based on one of the most busted early decks, and imakuni was a musician who did songs for the pokemon anime and got honored by becoming a tcg card and a reoccurring character in the tcg game

So, some jokes I caught.
Rattata having Endeavor, Quick Attack and a Focus Band, and its Dex entry being "fucking evil annoying rodent" is referencing the FEAR strategy, which involves Focus Sash, Endeavor, Quick Attack Rattata at level 1, which can defeat any Pokemon in a 1v1 scenario as long as it isn't a ghost-type (or has a priority move). "FEAR" is even an acronym for "Fucking Evil Annoying Rodent".
"For Bugs, use Poison!" is referencing the original Gen 1 games where Poison was super-effective on Bug-types.
"No! CATERPIE is unable to modify the existing rom to create unintended behaviour!" is an overly verbose way of saying the bug catcher's original quote, "No! CATERPIE can't hack it!"
The "The SLOWBRO blocked me in..." is a reference to an infamous Slowbro set called FunBro, meant to make games last forever- it's a moveset consisting of Block, Heal Pulse, Recycle and Slack Off.
The long-winded ranting bird keeper is meant to be Lavos, a Smogon player who infamously ragequit in a 2019 tournament when his opponent's Gyarados flinched his team three times with Waterfall, costing him two of his Gyarados counters- his Thunderpunch Jirachi and Explosion Heatran, with his rant afterwards ending up getting him banned entirely (Which serves as both his loss quote and post-battle conversation).
FEAR originally stood for Focus (sash) Endeavor (quick) Attack Rattata, the other meaning of FEAR was a backronym poking fun at the strategy

@@jaimereupert4247 spironolactone is a medication used to help offload fluid, which can help with high blood pressure, edema in tissues, and associated heart failure(amongst other issues). Thus, Spearownolactone lowered its PP directly means that it reduced the amount of urine in the body via its diuretic effect.
That Shorts Trainer having a Mew? That's actually a reference to a Gen 1 glitch, where players would use a glitch to run away from battling that Trainer in that spot, to spawn an encounter with a Mew. Because of that, the glitch was given the alternate name, the "Mew Glitch", as it was most frequently used on that specific Trainer, to encounter Mew in battle to catch it. There's more to that glitch than only using Fly/Teleport to avoid a Trainer you lock eyes with, but I don't feel like going deep into explaining that glitch. In short, the Special stat of the Pokemon that Trainer had in Red and Blue, was the exact Special stat needed to trigger a Mew encounter with that glitch.

The cool thing about romhacks is that they're still roms. So... Gameshark codes should work on them. Walk through walls, huh? Win unwinnable battles? Breaking romhacks sounds so fun... In theory. Most hacks have disappointing results. This one sounds funny enough to maybe have some Easter eggs?

My friends and I were looking forward to whatever was in that darn ball! We speculated it was Celebi, we speculated it was ho-Oh, maybe the same one from the first episode, a potential Gold 2 and Silver 2 Pokemon because we thought that was going to be a thing before Crystal existed. And it comes to find out that there was supposed to be a Celebi but the fourth movie happened and then they just dropped the GS Ball plot line all together. Why?!

I really hope this dumb hack gets finished in development entirely, but the fact so many Pokemon rom hacks are in beta or alpha, and the romhacker gives up on the project, gives me little hope of this happening. I in the past tried my own hand at romhacking, while not knowing how to code, but I lost the data of it when my previous computer broke, and I never backed it up, so I lost that project and everything on that computer. You though aren't really missing anything by me losing my romhacking data, it was a very minor hack that didn't change much at all.

For a little context, in real life I have a career as a Project Engineer, so I have a lot of experience bringing a project from beginning to end. Currently, I have detailed plans written up through the 6th gym, with a strong outline for the rest of the hack.
This hack won't be done anytime soon, but it will be done.

What is the wailord-venusar with fury cutter joke about?
A youtuber called Verlisify, he's kind of a meme for recommending terrible VGC movesets such as fury cutter on Venusaur and heavy slam on Wailord. Mostly he's just known for being extremely toxic toward the rest of the community, I wouldn't recommend looking him up.

So, the TCG club is a reference to the TCG game for Gameboy, where you battle at TCG clubs. Pretty sure the gym is a revamped version of one of the buildings. Imakuni is a recurring NPC who you can battle at them, he has his own card and weird music. Big nostalgia blast from that!

Zippo is the name of Ritchie's Charmeleon from the anime. In the indigo league platue season when Ash went to take on the League he ran into this trainer who also has a Pikachu named Sparky.
This is the trainer Ash lost to during the Pokemon League tournament thing in the first series.

Idk if anyone noticed, but Shorts Dan having a Mew is a reference to the glitch you can use with that trainer to force an encounter with Mew in the OG Red and Blue. He's one of two trainers in the game that work. If you beat him before you have fly, you kinda miss your chance to glitch in Mew.
I would die laughing if there's an encounter with Mew later in the game but you cant catch it if you've beaten Dan.

Looks a very fun and quirky romhack. There's so many with a good story, latest pokemon in or difficult to beat already that having one that's fun in general is a breath fo fresh air.
Side note: I'm still surprised there isn't a TCG romhack made for GBA, such a shame there wasn't an official one after the 1st one (and 2nd Japan only one).
