roughly mark with sharpie, then scratch a fine line with calipers into the sharpie marks... they can work as a compass if you need them to. no more an abuse of the tool than using it to scratch straight line parallels onto stuff.

If your interested I will send it for an autopsy if your interested. It's had some hot suppers with HVAC, driving lags and breaking some rusty nuts. I drove it like a rental and put it away wet. Old maintenance guy taught me a trick with the sealing tape. Roll it up on the length ways to fit into the wide threads for a few rounds, then change to flat. Used it on high pressure steam, hot water, gas, was a game changer.
Now that’s the proper way to temper an apprentice! I miss the days when you could teach by trial and error,,,error,,,error... Nowadays they’re fragile blossoms that you can’t raise your voice at or they don’t come back after lunch break.

It always helps to have a blunt sharpie to go with a micrometer for accurate measurements.
Measure down to the hundredths, mark to the tenths, cut to the units.
*Digital caliper.
I think the OD worked out at 6 thumbs and the ID 5 1/2 thumbs plus a box of bandaids.
Mark and cut down the middle.....

Good truck with Teflon tape. After you apply it, use the edge of the roll to press it in the threads. Easier then the finger nail.
Nothing is more appropriate than a proper thumbnail.
With good quality tape you don't need any of that shit. Just proper tension when applying. Cheapo junk bin stuff that might be the case.
Turning the roll around the other direction will allow you to put a little tension on the tape as you apply it too, it's much easier to apply as well.

It's amazing how far back in the line the sand travels. Had to once fix a sticky valve that used a lube pump. Found sand.
Another trick for the toolbox: Try anaerobic gasket eliminator on the oring and let it set.
Set the oring in paint thinner for a couple hours.
When we need a good chuckle, you and the Dewclaw deliver.
