    What a super large colony this one was, and such beautiful comb as well. But as large as it was, after about 5 plus hours, it was out of the ceiling and all the bees in the bee vac. A great day spent saving bees and meeting a great family. Until the next one, God's peace everyone.

    Thank you so much Jeff and Charlie for finally getting all these bees out of our house! We had a great time watching y'all work (and tasting the honey!) and learned a lot - by far the coolest experience that I hope we never have to do again. 😅 And I love that we get to relive the experience and have it immortalized on TH-cam! Thanks again. - Kelly and Glenda

    Y'all need to talk with the outfit that makes that hot knife.
    Have them fabricate one for you where the handle comes off the hot plate at about a 75degree angle/bend.
    The current "inline" design, I assume, is for stripping wax off of foundation where you have all the room in the world and want to be able to push the plate along.
    You need something more surgical for the confined spaces (essentially open boxes) you work in.
    Maybe even adjust the dimensions of the hot plate "foot"?
    Putting a bend on the handle arm ought to be simple for the manufacturer. And as a spokesman for them, they ought to oblige?

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are currently working on a new design for me right now, and I should have the prototype knife in a few weeks. I'm very excited to be the one to field test the product. Stay tuned for that video. Thanks for watching. God's peace Barbe.

      I assure you, I have no special ability to withstand bee stings. As a matter of fact, I hate getting stung which is why I mostly wear a bee jacket. Thank you Mr. Ed for your compassionate care and Charlie bear for being the fearless cameraman. I believe God watches over those who watch over his. And you service both the human and the bee communities so you're likely to be doubly blessed, but I have so many questions.
    How do you identify drones from the working brood if they're all crawling over the comb. I did do.some.research since our last exchange and learned how to gender bees.
    Also what is an uncapped brood? Is that like when there's an egg lain in the cell but not covered with wax? That's the only kind of capping I could think of.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Christin, we do love sharing our bee wrangling experiences and are very grateful that you take the time to watch them. To answer your questions:
      Drone brood is distinguished by the way they pultrude from the face of the comb, about 1/8 th of an inch.
      Uncapped brood is the larva that is not old enough and still is being fed by the bees. Once the feeding stops, the cell is capped and remains so until the fully developed bee emerges.
      Again, thanks for watching, and until the next time, God's peace.

    Why is the comb soft? Is it cause of the pollen they get around that area or is it the moister from the humidity Jeff?

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The reason it is soft is because it is very new and has not had time enough to harden up. It hardens up by having things stored inside of the cell. The more the cell is used, the harder the entire structure becomes. Thanks for watching. God's peace Hayden.

    Does the vacuum heard the bees are make it easier to transport them

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  ปีที่แล้ว

      Because the bee vac is specially designed not to harm bees due to it's low suction, it is one of the best tools I have when I rescue bees. There are many advantages in using a bee vac, one being like you suggest, ease of transport, but also it speeds up the process of removing the bees by confining them all in one spot. I post these videos, to show just how important bees are to our very survival, and why we should not just kill them out of ignorance. We only know what little we remember from his Grandfather so we probably could use help. We have 2 hives in our yard off Robinson Road and a hive in our son’s yard in Covington. We missed catching a swarm to keep
    We weren’t prepared for them to swarm as soon as they did. You are a wealth of information.

    These video's are really interesting to me. My Dad took care of bees for a couple of years many years ago, when I was 13 - 15. It was fun and interesting then too. My question is, what can people put in the newly emptied space to prevent another swarm of bees moving into there?

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The best thing to put in the space is insulation, it matters not the exact type, but whichever one is used, the space needs to be filled ENTIRELY! Also, any crack or opening on the exterior of the structure needs to be closed off as well using calk or other hard drying material. This will deter bees from ever finding the space inside the structure. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace Alan.

Really sad...

      Needless to say, your comment brings sorrow to me. I have always strived to be inclusive to the audience in sharing my bee wrangling experiences as so many who follow my channel don't or can not keep bees for themselves, and many others that follow my channel keep bees and share the ups and downs of doing that. I do my best in teaching, and entertaining, my followers as bee keeping should be above all fun for us all, and to that end, I do add drama to the videos. I too find it very sad that you and I do not share the same sentiments, but we are each, and rightly so, entitled to our own opinions God's peace Christy.

    Hey Jeff. How do you keep the bee-vac from getting clogged with honey covered , sticky bees?

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The best way not to get the vac clogged is not vacuum bees that have honey on them. However, when it does happen, I pull the end of the hose out of the bee vac and place the other end on the exhaust of the vacuum head. That blows any bees that are lodged in the hose right out. Why does the hive have such a large drone population? It would seem that they would be a drain on resources that they aren't contributing to.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  ปีที่แล้ว

      The reason for the large drone population is the hive is making preparations to swarm. Drone production is one of the first signs that the hive is gearing up to produce swarm cells. And yes, as drones do nothing for the contributions of hive growth, they are a drain on the resources. However, as they are necessary for mating with a queen, they are necessary, but once that need is fulfilled, they are no longer needed and kicked out. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. @29:30-29:45 "Thank You, Jesus!" Man oh Man! You'd been talking about a lot of Drones! But also, a lot of Brood?
    Mr. Ed, if a Queen dies, then a Worker starts laying (diploid/haploid?) Drones, Males, to continue the colony's genes.
    If there's lots of Brood, it means the Queen is laying eggs, doing her Queening job, and All Is Right In The Hive.
    Mr. Ed, do Queens produce Drones, Males? Aren't Drones an indicator of a failing Hive?
    Thank you from rural South Jersey!

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, queen produce males and she makes them every year. Generally, it is in the early spring in preparation for mating when virgin queens are newly made. The presences of only drones and no worker brood is an indication of a failing hive as it means there is a laying worker in the hive and no queen. Thanks for watching. God's peace.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  ปีที่แล้ว

      For the most part, where the female bees are born, that's where they will live their entire life....all 6 weeks of it. However, the drone bee, the males, they will go from hive to hive, and are alway welcomed except in the fall. Then, where ever they are, the females kick them out of the hive to starve. It's only the female bees that goes through the winter because they do all the work and the males do nothing but eat the stores of food.Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. Another amazing video y'all. Great work. I happened to have a thought. I love your videos and how you're gentle and professional with removals and don't seem to use any smoke.
    My thoughts though? Have you ever tried using a large red spotlight? One that bright enough. But won't fog photo paper too much. That may seem odd, a light that doesn't fog photo paper too much? How woukd that correlate? Much like photo paper, bee don't have much sensitivity to the infrared or near infrared end of the light spectrum. So if it doesn't fog photo paper much, it shoukd be barely visible to the bees. It light help get that queen sooner, rather than her scampering off or possibly down in a crevice somewhere that isn't reachable.
    Or perhaps one of those head lamps with the red light used for night time while out camping or whatnot.
    It couldbbe a bust that doesn't work. But if you know anyone chat does analog photography and has some old black and white paper laying around, it might be worth it to get a couple spotlight or fog light bulbs that are red, try them out to test how much light that's outside the red spectrum is actually being emitted, and then give it a try to see if it works better than one of those blue-ish (ultraviolet heavy) LED lights.
    I may have no effect. Or might prove to be a worth while experiment.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have seen several video on bee wranglers wrangling bees at night using red lights, and it does not disturb the bees like a white light does. However, a red light would not give me enough light to see clearly what I'm looking at so for that reason I use a regular flash light. Thanks for watching and for your suggestion, it is greatly appreciated. God's peace Ivan.

    That is a lot of bees right there. How far apart do you think the combs were spaced center to center?

      Funny you should ask that question. By chance, I happened to have my micrometer with me and I measured. The average distance was 1.73689 to 1.91369 from center to center except on the end pieces. They were .47892 on one end and .39876 on the other end. Actually, I have no idea as Charlie forgot to bring the mic. God's peace brother.

    What happened to the electric heated knife you used awhile back? Never mind you’re using it now!

    Hi there, great job! I was wondering though, when you put the comb on the table don't the bees on the other side get squished?

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No they do not, because bees have an exoskeleton, the weight does not crush them. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. Do you change to remove bees 🐝?

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on the situation. I will say this, for years I never charged, but I incur costs to remove bees and it is only fair to at least cover those, but even still there are removals that I do for free. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them.
