  • If your Lawnmower kicks back and is hard to start the flywheel key is probably broken and throwing the ignition timing off.

    quick efficient job as usual Don! I just had one that kicks back a lot. checked the flywheel key and its good. blade is tight. so i assume its a bent crankshaft or maybe the compression realese is messed up.

    don't know if you added it in there somewhere but older Tec motors use a single mounting point (shoulder screw) on the starter housing. you must drain the oil prior to taking the housing loose....or you'll find a mess on da garage floor. fyi steel key is common to LV195 motors on the Toro Recyclers and some other later model mowers. the "L" shape key is common to quite a few Tec motors. fyi #2 pull spark plug wire initially and if you find the 'kick' goes away it's the f/w key.

    @th19940305 there a knock off tool that you can use it screws on the top of the crankshaft you would screw it down till there's is about an inch between the flywheel use a large Flathead screw driver and a hammer strike the knock off tool while applying slight pressure with the screw driver and the flywheel will come off

    No I was ignorant to the fact that the blade needed to be installed before I tried to start the motor. with out the the blade the motor looses it's momentum and will kick back just as if it was out of timing. O7OUT

    Excellent video- wish all explanations were this clear. I sheared lawn mower blade key so I'm certain the flywheel key is sheared also since they are the same size. I'll just make another one out of a large bolt, by squaring off the sides with a file.
    Also twisted/bent blade and shaft. Used a 3-foot C-clamp to bend blade back on mower. Straightened bent shaft with hard whacks from mini sledge. Taped toothpicks to blade & rotate for alinement. For Shaft used duct tape barely touching shaft.

    Okay after my nap I cracked her open and top dead center on the marks with valves closed and piston up but ignition point was about 20 deg. out sitting at not quite one o'clock. Valves seamed to be closed but piston was well on it's way down by the time magneto contacts met. Is this right?

    Yes, in some of his other videos, he inserted a nylon rope into the cylinder via the spark plug hole to prevent the piston from moving in the cylinder. This will ensure that when you attempt to remove the flywheel, the crankshaft does not spin freely.

  • @killahhh199
    @killahhh199 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    nice vid but i don't think you are suppose to use a steal fly wheel key because if it hits something it could break the fly wheel itself in half because the aluminum is much softer than steal.

    I HAVE A TORO WITH A TECUMSEH 6.5 HP ENGINE, MODEL LEV 120 WILL THE FLY WHEEL KEY 611298 FIT ON MY ENGINE. THE FLY WHEEL KEY THAT WAS REMOVED FROM MY LAWNMOWER HAD A SLIGHT ANGLE TO IT. I BELIEVE THAT WAS PART NUMBER 611004. I SHOWED IT TO PEOPLE AT ACE AND HOME DEPOT AND THEY THOUGHT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH MY FLY WHEEL KEY YET WHEN I ATTEMPT TO START THIS IT STALLS OUT AND THE HANDLE PULL ROPE SNAPS BACK. IS IT POSSIBLE THE EXISTING KEY THAT I REMOVED WAS THE WRONG KEY OR IS THERE A VALVE LASH PROBLEM? PLEASE NOTE I DID SEE A TINY BIT OF BLUE SMOKE AND THEN IT WOULD STALL OUT. THE SPARK PLUG DID NOT LOOK LIKE IT HAD OIL ON IT. THE LAWNMOWER MAY HAVE BEEN TIPPED ON THE WRONG SIDE CAUSING OIL TO LEAK INTO THE AIR FILTER AND MUFFLER.

    you can buy universal rope from autozone that fits briggs and tecumseh.Ive found that often the best way to instal a tecumseh rope is to drill a hole to the left of the hole the rope goes through already, turn the recoil reel 8 turns to tighten the string, feed the string through the new hole, and into the hole in the recoil reel, tie a know with your free hand, slowly let it wind in, then work the string into the hole its supposed to go through. then put the handle on, and put it together again

    Are flywheels always hard to remove, or just the ones where the key gets sheared? I dont think I ever had to pull a flywheel off where the key wasnt sheared, but my guess is that if the key isnt sheared, the flywheel may come off alot easier.

      For a Tecumseh, use a harmonic balancer puller like the big boyz . The Tecumseh will have 3 holes at 120 degrees apart. For a Briggs, you can get a puller from Briggs, a Briggs will have 2 holes.

    I thought I was pretty good on working on this crap. But I have one that has got me stumped. It is a Tecumseh LEV 120. It was not running when I got it. When I pulled the cord it sounded like someone had put the coil back on but did not gap it. And it was spinning over but hitting the coil. So I take the cover off and spin the flywheel over by hand and there is no knock. I went ahead and gaped to make sure. Put it back together. Pull the cord and its knocking again. So I take it back apart and changed out the timing key. Did not think that was the problem but who knows. This time I took my ratchet and socket and spun the engine over as fast as I could and no knocking sound. I put it back together. Pull the cord and it's knocking again. Does not sound like the blade but I checked and there is no hit marks. I went as far as to get a new blade. And again it is knocking. So I pulled the spark plug out and pulled the cord. And there was No knock. I put the spark plug back in and it knocks. I am thinking there is some thing wrong with the valves. I take it apart again. But they seemed to be OK. Made sure the gap's were in speck. And cleaned them up.
    Now i have to get a new head gasket.
    I went back to look it over and think. I got a hold of the flywheel and lifted up like I was going to take it off. And it moves up and down about the thickness of a nickel.
    I think that is where the knock is coming from. Is this a seal issue or something else?
    I do not ever recall seeing one that moved up and down like this.
    Anyone got any ideas ?

    • @Mr_Tecumseh
      @Mr_Tecumseh 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would be a just a coil post 1983 (electronic ignition). Magneto's had points and were behind the flywheel and consisted of 3 working parts, condenser, coil and the point's. Some even had the magneto behind the flywheel and the coil outside the flywheel, which was even more work. Anyone of those 3 parts could have gone bad in the past. Now if the coil goes bad it is just one part and you always know what. They are on the outside of the flywheel now and have become very cheap with all the aftermarket coils that are being made in China and flooding the market now. They are much easier to diagnose and change now. If the engine stops after a few minutes once it has heated up, it is the coil, the coil goes bad and will not work at high temp's, it stops giving spark and the engine shuts down. Change it. You will not have to remove the flywheel to change that any longer, if it was built from 1983 and on. You will have to remove the flywheel to change your flywheel key. That should be done right away, because besides the kickback you feel, your engine's spark is no longer properly timed and the engine will backfire, run poorly, etc.
