One of my first teachers taught me to hold the violin with my finger resting against it, which means I've never been holding correctly with my shoulder. It also means I can't vibrate or slide with good technique and now I have to re-learn how to hold the violin. The violin keeps slipping around to the front now that I'm not pressing on the neck with my left finger, and it's really frustrating! Feels like starting all over again. I've been adjusting my shoulder rest and now running into the issue of my lymph node hurting when I try to hold the violin in the correct place. Bought a different rest to try out in the hopes it makes it a bit easier, but it's really frustrating! Really helpful video, going to use these tips as I re-learn. :)
Hi Kijasmata, it is always worth to try to improve on our basics, as it will make your violin playing much more natural and easier in the future. I am sending you all my positive energy and I hope you can keep trying until you find the right one. Happy practising!
@kijasmata I’m currently dealing with a similar situation. Do you have any advice?

As ALWAYS, an excellent explanation and then, actually showing us how execute its practical application is enormously helpful. Thank you very much.
You're very welcome!
I've started doing a lot more double stops recently and have realized that for thirds especially (and especially on any string but the E) my hand comes around with my index finger coming off the neck and the thumb going more below, almost flat underneath the neck.
Glad to see this is ok.
I love you!!!!!!

Well
I’m just a beginner and I have the problem of bending the knuckle of my index finger almost under the neck while playing E and sometimes A strings. In order not to do that should we completely detach the inner side of our index finger from the neck of the violin while playing those strings? I have short fingers and a very short pinky and if I try to reach my 4th finger to its place while slightly touching the neck with the inner side of my index finger, I cant help but have a crooked hand and index finger. Only way I found to keep this inner side of hand straight is to keep my hand very far away from the neck (like Menuhin style) otherwise either I have that bad shape of hand or I cant reach my fourth finger far enough. I’m DESPERATE for a solution and cant find any😞😞😞
Dear Naz, as long as the index finger is relaxed, touching the neck very lightly is ok. The trouble is when index finger is resting strongly on the neck as there is locked tension. I hope you can experiment and find a solution. Happy practising!
