And secondly Tejas if run 18hrs even either straight runs or even say 200kms runs x 9runs accomplishes 10k passengers easily aa day that shd b the minimum aim at heavy load sections ie each of the. 10000 passengers benefit 2hrs over 60kmph on thr journey time w 2 stops that can alternate wrt the best solution stns depending upon footfalls even if 2VBs r done ie every hr 20k passengers, can easily b moved 200kms or 14 k passengers/day at 300kmsx6/day distances... Tejas shd replace trains that run below 60 kmph, so those r removed, so that thr congestion behavior, is curtailed on the tracks, ie jams nd track utilization increased, also loops tracks 2kms at stns provided minimum 4 more each place wr trains can b send 2wait, so that other 120-130 trains go seemlessly without having 2slow DN.. Ie every 50-100kms rest memu@100kmph runs looped, can easily b put 2run cover passengers towards stns, for VBs pickups, and free allocations of seats given 2those with VB tickets ie all 10km passengers accommodated easily, y nd also long distances trains reserved to 200kms stops only, as VBs r added.. So utilisation has to b done before long distance thing is attempted that will raise utilitization of railways multifold may b 1000% fm next d at it is done so pls utilize 1 vande bharat for 2hrs 10000 persons a day

If this can b done w a target of 4kms a min then rest of the changes learning from this can b applied towards train 18 can it not b so.... And also towards track improvements and what must b done in all tracks laid henceforth in the country at minimal cost and max quality nd min time ...
excellent interview. The quality of this shows why our main media has been replaced by social media and TH-cam. Mr Mani is a doer and he exhibits that building infrastructure is not so straightforward and economics plays a large role in projects.
In Pvt sector, if you don't work you are questioned. In Govt sector, if you work, you get asked, what is your interest / motive etc. Non performance in Govt is equated with nishkama karma. People who just mechanically follow process without a bother about outcome and results are rewarded. Time entire PSU sector is privatised. India would then shoot up economically in no time. I have worked in PSUs for decades.

Rarely do we get such oversight of contemporary issues related to our Indian masses. This was such a treat to come across to. Pertinent questions, Mr. Mani's positive outlook despite struggling with India's inertia for mediocrity, More solutions than bitching. He does comes across as a leader to follow. Hope the current minister rectifies the past mistakes and lay a precedent for more such initiative-taking, ingenious and hardworking teams to prosper.
When Mani Sir said that you could delay this project but you could not stop this from becoming a reality ...I got reminded of famous quote of Victor Hugo , " Nothing is more powerful than an Idea whose time has come." I have been an admirer of his approach towards works As he sacrificied a cushy position of GM of a Zone for making his dream a reality by opting for the post of less lucrative post of GM of a production unit. It speaks volumes about his works ethics and integrity. I have read some of his posts on Audit where he has made valid criticism against the latter. I agree to sir's criticism despite being a Railway Auditor beacuse I can understand his points of audits having little skin in the game and auditiors often become victims of cognitive biases like Hindsight Bias and Confirmation bias.. Always a delight listening to him and reading his articles...what makes him an eloquent speaker is his penchant forcusing shayaaris and philosophical quotes .
29:55 Sir this is so true. Recently went to Banaras, when booked the tickets it showed that thr were not enough seats available. But in actual when boarded in the train the whole compartment was almost empty, not only mine but also the nearby compartments too.
Train 18 actually needs some decorative changes in terms of aestheics, comfort and luxury, not in technical aspects like faster acceleration, and these can be achieved in relative short time without requiring extensive trial and testing. 1) Exterior still looks boxy like old LHB coaches instead of tubular. T18 also needs a side/bottom skirt to hide the bogie and all those components under the coach. 2) Nose and exterior of train pilot's cabin needs improvement in terms of aestheics and aerodynamics (the nose of RRTS bombardier indeed looks better). some portions of it looks shoddily designed and made and also does not look like merging smoothly into the exterior of the rest of the coach- the nose and exterior of the driver's cabin of the DEMU supplied to the Srilankan railways is less aerodynamic but atleast merges in far better aesthetic way into rest of the locomotive. Blue horizontal patch on upper side of the coaches perhaps intended at hiding protruded welding, looks ugly and suddenly ends before the driver's cabin. 3) Interiors of Executive chair class has to be more aesthetically pleasing in its paneling, finesse with more wood finish (or woodlike) paneling, more facilities like proper WiFi (train WiFi is a joke on Indian railways trains), LED screen for each seat (many commuters who do not carry tablets actually prefer wider screens over their smart phones and definitely would like to rest their phones), proper leg rest to justify the significant rise in fare over the economy class. Also seats in train 18 are not as comforting as the Tejas express both in terms of ergonomics and cushion comfort (the new tejas on Mumbai-Ahmedabad route, Chennai-Madurai Tejas express have better executive class seats). Atleast the executive class on T18 should introduce more comfortable seats. Also, the luggage rack on executive class could be kept covered for privacy purpose and the reading light could be attached to the seat itself just like aircraft. It is a shame that three years were just wasted.

Agreed. The problem is that most Indian industries lack a sense of design. Even today, decades after NID was estabilished, Industrial Design (Product and Transport) has not found its footing in India. I feel that the Indian Railways should start hiring Industrial Designers (even if they have studied internationally) and let their creativity thrive.

We the general people of India will always remember you as a creator of great transformation of Indian Railways train system in the form of Train 18 ( Bande Bharat express) after introduction of Rajdhani express in 1960's. Sir, I believe every word you spoken in this interview & probably can feel to some extent what you are feeling after gifting the great train sets to the people of my country with that record breaking time schedule but in return so much of trouble for the entire team & you also. But Sir, I am not surprised. This has become the culture here since long time, specially in Govt. establishments. Here, doing good work like developing important assets like train18 or fighter plane like Tejas, Arjun Tanks, which can be manufactured locally is a act like stoning in Hornets nest. Imagine how many foreign trips of high level people you have spoilt & many other things not mentionable here. You will be pulled down from all sides. When you are in a stage of completing your design & manufacturer & successful trial on that moment you will face changed requirements from buyer/ users. You have sensed that and intelligently bypassed them as you mentioned in the interview. Only advantage, here developer & user/buyer are same i,e. I R. Second vital thing is jealousy. Which is the most dangerous thing for not only the project but also for related all peoples. Not only many colleagues become potential enemy but also people in very higher ups in the chain. Sir, this is the story of nearly all the Govt. establishments who are functioning in important areas like new creation & development . Our country have lost many scientists & talents in their golden time. One example Ex ISRO Cryogenic engine scientists Nambi Nrayanan's saga. Only hope is that with the change of leadership at the top (Political & bureaucracy), things are changing but it will take time. Changing of culture, developed since 60 years can't be changed over night. Let us hope for the best of our country & once again a very big salute for you Sir. Jai Hind.

I sent the train concept and photograph to the then Railway minister Mr.Suresh prabhu, in 2016, with the same blue and white color pattern, on his twitter..and i gave many advices to him on twitter, when i came to india, on how india should change the old brick colored trains to some modern looking european trains, and also sent him some photographs of New Zealand and Australian train stations.I dont know if it is coincidence or not, but immediately after this, news came about this Train 18 in indian media. As a Keralite I fully support the intention of K-Rail. But it's better to Construct it in Broad Gauge and use and improved version of Train-18 to achieve a tol speed of 200km/h.
वर्ल्ड लेबल की स्वदेशी ट्रेन बन गई तो विदेश से दुगनी कीमत पर खरीद कर तगड़ा कमीशन खाने की उम्मीद करने वाले अफसरों और उनके सरपरस्तों का तो मनी साहब ने भारी नुकसान कर दीया है। अब मनी साहब और उनकी टीम को इसकी सजा तो भुगतनी ही थी। कमीशन लॉबी तो उनका जहां तक वश चलेगा आगे भी इस प्रोजेक्ट को मटिया मेट करने की कोशिश करेंगे।
I watched latest and then came to this old interview some noteworthy points are mentioned below 1. Mani sir is bold to say everything but he avoided to make his interview controversial like Governor Satyapal Malik 2. Our Lovely country men has vast potential to do anything unless politics should keep aside. 3. Mani Sir insisted to make more projects like this in India for Aatamnirbhar India... 4. Government officials and bureaucrats are not supportive towards developing new indigenous technology instead they prefer import of technology, I think main objective of their is to grab bribe from multi national companies There are much more to say on 2 interviews of mani Sir...
Mani sahab, intelligent and competent engineers cannot help but exert when opportunity to build and do something new which they always wanted to do. That pleasure of struggling to build something novel is very compelling. It is understandable to me if to complete and see the train running in time before retirement, you used your legitimate powers to hasten procurement. I have worked in govt and have believed that if your intentions are honest and your files speak for you, then you will not be in grief. But maybe I was lucky ? I am sorry that the officers were not appreciated and such a bad example has been set for those who dare? I hope this govt will look into it?

Also seats in train 18 are not as comforting as the Tejas express both in terms of ergonomics and cushion comfort (the new tejas on Mumbai-Ahmedabad route, Chennai-Madurai Tejas express have better executive class seats). Atleast the executive class on T18 should introduce more comfortable seats. Also, the luggage rack on executive class could be kept covered for privacy purpose and the reading light could be attached to the seat itself just like aircraft.
It is a shame that three years were just wasted.

Agreed. The problem is that most Indian industries lack a sense of design. Even today, decades after NID was estabilished, Industrial Design (Product and Transport) has not found its footing in India.
I feel that the Indian Railways should start hiring Industrial Designers (even if they have studied internationally) and let their creativity thrive.

We the general people of India will always remember you as a creator of great transformation of Indian Railways train system in the form of Train 18 ( Bande Bharat express) after introduction of Rajdhani express in 1960's.
Sir, I believe every word you spoken in this interview & probably can feel to some extent what you are feeling after gifting the great train sets to the people of my country with that record breaking time schedule but in return so much of trouble for the entire team & you also.
But Sir, I am not surprised. This has become the culture here since long time, specially in Govt. establishments. Here, doing good work like developing important assets like train18 or fighter plane like Tejas, Arjun Tanks, which can be manufactured locally is a act like stoning in Hornets nest. Imagine how many foreign trips of high level people you have spoilt & many other things not mentionable here. You will be pulled down from all sides. When you are in a stage of completing your design & manufacturer & successful trial on that moment you will face changed requirements from buyer/ users. You have sensed that and intelligently bypassed them as you mentioned in the interview. Only advantage, here developer & user/buyer are same i,e. I R.
Second vital thing is jealousy. Which is the most dangerous thing for not only the project but also for related all peoples. Not only many colleagues become potential enemy but also people in very higher ups in the chain.
Sir, this is the story of nearly all the Govt. establishments who are functioning in important areas like new creation & development . Our country have lost many scientists & talents in their golden time. One example Ex ISRO Cryogenic engine scientists Nambi Nrayanan's saga.
Only hope is that with the change of leadership at the top (Political & bureaucracy), things are changing but it will take time. Changing of culture, developed since 60 years can't be changed over night. Let us hope for the best of our country & once again a very big salute for you Sir. Jai Hind.

I sent the train concept and photograph to the then Railway minister Mr.Suresh prabhu, in 2016, with the same blue and white color pattern, on his twitter..and i gave many advices to him on twitter, when i came to india, on how india should change the old brick colored trains to some modern looking european trains, and also sent him some photographs of New Zealand and Australian train stations.I dont know if it is coincidence or not, but immediately after this, news came about this Train 18 in indian media. As a Keralite I fully support the intention of K-Rail. But it's better to Construct it in Broad Gauge and use and improved version of Train-18 to achieve a tol speed of 200km/h.

वर्ल्ड लेबल की स्वदेशी ट्रेन बन गई तो विदेश से दुगनी कीमत पर खरीद कर तगड़ा कमीशन खाने की उम्मीद करने वाले अफसरों और उनके सरपरस्तों का तो मनी साहब ने भारी नुकसान कर दीया है। अब मनी साहब और उनकी टीम को इसकी सजा तो भुगतनी ही थी। कमीशन लॉबी तो उनका जहां तक वश चलेगा आगे भी इस प्रोजेक्ट को मटिया मेट करने की कोशिश करेंगे।

Mani sahab, intelligent and competent engineers cannot help but exert when opportunity to build and do something new which they always wanted to do. That pleasure of struggling to build something novel is very compelling. It is understandable to me if to complete and see the train running in time before retirement, you used your legitimate powers to hasten procurement. I have worked in govt and have believed that if your intentions are honest and your files speak for you, then you will not be in grief. But maybe I was lucky ? I am sorry that the officers were not appreciated and such a bad example has been set for those who dare? I hope this govt will look into it?
