Millions, if not billions of people depend upon fish harvested from the sea. Would you have them all starve? Or perhaps you believe that their lives are of lesser value? I am sure that there are those that could care less about the damage they do. I seriously doubt that they are more than a tiny minority. Even if you only consider the cost in dollars, no fisherman wants to spend more money replacing lost equipment. It is incredibly expensive! Look up the cost a fishing equipment. It will blow your mind. Even the most ruthless of fisherman would prefer keeping and retrieving all of their equipment. You are awfully quick to judge and condemn people to death. I'm pretty sure that no one would ever promote or elect you to ANY position that requires judgment and reasoned decisions.
Please don't say human beings, grouping us all together. There is a very small number of people that are deliberately causing harm through carelessness and greed. But I'm pretty sure that for every single person that causes harm to this planet and the wildlife, there are at least 100 people doing good things to and for our environment. Do you only see evil? Perhaps an eye exam would help. Have you ever met anyone deliberately fouling this world? But when a whale is stuck in netting it begins to panic and it means it can be extremely dangerous just getting up close to it, let alone trying to cut off wiring. It could have led to the divers possibly being killed and the whale hurting itself even more.
I've seen loads of these rescues from entangled fishing equipment which just goes to show how much garbage we leave in the oceans and it's truly distressing to think how many don't get saved. We really need to start being proper stewards of this planet and not just selfish reckless abusers of this beautiful world and its other inhabitants.
When the persistence and responsible behaviour of good natured people achieve an objective that is a benefit to the earth and all of the inhabitants therein, I applaud their efforts! And admire them for what they do! Those are extraordinary people!!! But, when the persistence of bad natured, irresponsible people brings death and destruction, that is a detriment to the earth! This really disturbs me on so many levels!!! Those kind of people are abusers, exploiter's and neglector's!!! Todd Stamos what about the seals who gets trapped in these nets? The turtles, sea-lions, manta rays? They are trapped in these same nets as the whales and they die due to it cutting into their skin making them weak, unable to eat properly, swim to get enough food, decapitating them basically. But yes overpopulation is a burden on the resources on earth
A big thank you for the people that take the time to rescue these ocean creatures wether or not seals, turtles, whales or sharks. There must be a way to track who these nets belong to!
Heroic efforts and monumental results. I salute these brave and good people. I know they wished they could have gotten that last bit, and I wish it, too. But I believe this made the difference between life and death for this whale. Respect and gratitude.

I've spent days watching the devastation brought about by man's greed and I shall carry on watching the videos, why? I'm hoping I will see some action by governments to not only stop the carnage, but the pollution that is going into the oceans , tons by the minute. Wouldn't it be great if each fishing vessel had to pay a tax, and every time a creature got entangled in *any* net whatsoever the whole of the tax went up for every vessel. The fishermen would soon sort the problem out if they were losing money due to other vessels' incompetence. And yes, those nets need to be inspected and tagged with the owners details. This problem could be solved, but it looks as if the powers that be really don't want to put steps in place to solve it
Believe it or not, due to Tweakers stealing every bit of copper they can get their hands on, most suppliers of wire now come with identifying marks on The Wire and insulation. Every little piece can be tracked to the owner, helping scrap metal yards determine whether or not the scrap metal is owned by the person trying to sell it. Something similar could easily be done with the rope and line used to build fishing nets. Conscientious countries would probably adopt some program like that, while other countries would refuse. Call your representatives. Make the suggestion. Start a movement. Do something besides complain.

All members of my dive team carry special knives , multi tools and hemostats for removing lines and netting . We use grappling hooks to "drag" for nets and lines . From January to this date 10-7- 2019 = Over 1200 pounds of old fishnets and lines . They are ground to pieces and recycled . Never stop the fight to keep our oceans free of plastics and prosecute those who are irresponsible against marine life .
At a time like this when such a massive net and such atrocious wounds ultimately caused by man's inhumane carelessness, Sea World of San Diego should've been called, the USA is the only country in the world with the massive amount of intellect and knowledge to help free this beautiful majestic creature and get her back to her family in time plus help her heal from her wounds caused by a despicable human!
That's almost impossible if the whale doesn't keep still. Being hit by that tail will kill you instantly eventhough the whale doesn't have the intention doing that.

What you're saying is true but only above the water, so that wasn't the problem. The problem was the net has probably been there for a very long time judging by the damage and infections done and has merged with the tail. If they try to remove it that will cause unimaginable pain to the whale and the whale may die
The UN should mandate and strongly enforce an international law that makes all nets without exception that is used for fishing equipped with GPS tracking devices that will make lost nets identifiable and quickly findable if lost by the owners and or users of these nets. Any and all boats using non GPS nets will be seized by any and all countries militaries under mandate of the UN. Let's solve this problem once and for all.
We need to clean the oceans and protect all animals. The whole planet deserves to be a much better place for all living creatures, and it's only up to us human beings to do this. Sherri McCormic , Why don’t you go do it????? We should be grateful! The greater part of the damage is removed! That calf will breach and do tail slaps until the remainder comes off by the force. It IS NOT an easy task and most importantly, that 500lbs is no longer there, so she stands a much larger chance of survival; for she won’t tire down with the weight and become easy prey.

I CAN’T BEAR to see those pesky parasite on these magnificent creatures, but some of them are actually good and play an integral roll in the cycle of life and healing of these great beings. Those orange/red looking or white (depending on the species of whale) bunch of parasites that infest whales, called Whale Lice, will set up shop on the wound and eat away the rotting flesh; eliminating infection.

You DON’T live in the ocean, nor do I; so you DON’T KNOW whether or not this youngster; who will no doubt amass size, weight and strength will “breach and tail slap” until the pesky, remaining portion is removed, nor do I; howeverrrrr, because it’s so countlessly frequently, that I’ve seen these majestic creatures with quirky, gigantic tails; bearing the tales of battle/s, be it from natural and unnatural predators, ship propellers or fishing gear; as is the case in this video, I will remain optimistic that this, too; shall pass, and somewhere, somehow; I will see this amazing being and be able to identify it, by its battle scar and be extremely happy and grateful that it survived, like the true fighter it is! Sadly it was the most difficult of tasks to even get that amount of net off her. I am hopeful but know that she may have died considering her wounds. I felt heavy-hearted at the reality that we could not take the rest of the net off. It was truly stuck tight in place.

I don't really see the solution since so many millions, if not billions of people rely on fish harvested from the sea. I think I read somewhere that it was the number one (?) source of protein for people. I'm curious as to whether commercial fisherman simply don't care, or they are doing their best and still lose gear. I hope it's the latter, though I'm sure that some of them simply don't care. These are Great people saving and helping sea life..I hope every net they see they cut and destroy it never leaving any of it in the sea.Man will Destroy sea life from plastics such as these nets.

Abandoned nets are an absolute danger. I think that all fisherman should be made to put an identification marker on their nets

Great job friends,but what about the rest of the net stuck to her tail.Since it was cutting into her body do you think it will get infected and eventually kill her.
Exactly. I have seen this in several "rescues". They remove the trailing bit, cheer for the camera, and stop trying. 😒
Sherri McCormic , Why don’t you go do it????? We should be grateful! The greater part of the damage is removed! That calf will breach and do tail slaps until the remainder comes off by the force. It IS NOT an easy task and most importantly, that 500lbs is no longer there, so she stands a much larger chance of survival; for she won’t tire down with the weight and become easy prey.
richard soult , The animal will be okay, as it relates to the damage done by the net. See, this is where the awesomeness of God and Mother Nature kicks in. I CAN’T BEAR to see those pesky parasite on these magnificent creatures, but some of them are actually good and play an integral roll in the cycle of life and healing of these great beings. Those orange/red looking or white (depending on the species of whale) bunch of parasites that infest whales, called Whale Lice, will set up shop on the wound and eat away the rotting flesh; eliminating infection.
Daniel Reibold , Okay, so the calf/juvenile; still not an adult, still little, still young, still the child of a mammal! Big fricking deal! You DON’T live in the ocean, nor do I; so you DON’T KNOW whether or not this youngster; who will no doubt amass size, weight and strength will “breach and tail slap” until the pesky, remaining portion is removed, nor do I; howeverrrrr, because it’s so countlessly frequently, that I’ve seen these majestic creatures with quirky, gigantic tails; bearing the tales of battle/s, be it from natural and unnatural predators, ship propellers or fishing gear; as is the case in this video, I will remain optimistic that this, too; shall pass, and somewhere, somehow; I will see this amazing being and be able to identify it, by its battle scar and be extremely happy and grateful that it survived, like the true fighter it is! Now, go somewhere, Mr!
Sadly it was the most difficult of tasks to even get that amount of net off her. I am hopeful but know that she may have died considering her wounds. I felt heavy-hearted at the reality that we could not take the rest of the net off. It was truly stuck tight in place.

46% being juveniles... It must be far worse for them since they continue to grow with the nets and lines restricting that growth. I don't really see the solution since so many millions, if not billions of people rely on fish harvested from the sea. I think I read somewhere that it was the number one (?) source of protein for people. I'm curious as to whether commercial fisherman simply don't care, or they are doing their best and still lose gear. I hope it's the latter, though I'm sure that some of them simply don't care. Thank you for what you do. Was Gandalf speaking about you and your team when he told Bilbo (or Frodo?) that "There is also good in the world"?
Horrific stats for these magnificent creatures .... Their decline would be massive without the monitoring and help for survival ?!?!
