This video literally saved me 2,000 dollars, and got me out on the water the next day. The fuel pump inside my VST was locked up. So I took a battery an kept reversing the wires and sure enough it unlocked the fuel pump. Now my boat runs great, and I didn’t have to spend any money! Thank you very much! You are a great mechanic.
@zanegibbs8135 did the bad fuel pump still make a noise? My dad's boat acts like it's starving for fuel. Runs for just a second and dies. 2012 150 hpdi
Do you actually hear or feel the pump running? I think my VFT fuel pump is jammed but I don't know what the pump is supposed to sound like or behave when it is working. I did exactly what you did switching wires back and forth and I only hear a clicking noise. I found so much sand like substance throughout the VFT and both fuel pumps but not in the fuel filters. I'm assuming it is an aluminum oxide corrosion. I also found water throughout the fuel system.
Thank you! Yes, there is a bunch of hacks out there that just want to get the job done regardless of doing it right or not! There's a difference in fixing it and just throwing parts at it :) Thank you for commenting!
I'm really guilty of just replacing parts on vehicles. At my age and weight it's just a pain. but when it comes to my boat, it's easier, cheaper, and sometimes even fun to do all the work. The engine's are at chest level and everything is easy to get to.
By the way, this repair is WAY beyond my skill level, but I enjoy watching you do it. I am amazed you can remember to put all these parts back together; you are brilliant!
Nah, it's not that bad. This was actually a lot dirtier than normal. The best thing is to get a lot of clean rags and have a nice clean area to take the thing apart and lay your parts out so you can put them back in, in the same order they were pulled out :) Thank you again!
As a Diy’er on my Yamaha outboard I am getting ready to tackle this project myself. After watching this, it has definitely made me much more confident in tackling the VST! Thank you guys for the great video! 👍🏼🙌🏼👊🏼
great job! We found that at our shop hourly rates it's usually cheaper to just replace the VST. This is great information for the DIY'ers that are trying to save some money. It shows that they can be repaired usually with just enough effort.
I don’t know if this is my issue yet, but the internet has led me here. Thank you for the informative/easy to understand video. I really enjoyed seeing you at the 1000k subscriber mark and then seeing your channel now at 184K. I know it’s well deserved
I run a federally permitted offshore fishing charter business on the Gulf of Mexico and really appreciate the wealth of knowledge your videos share with me to help me get by when I can’t afford to hire an expert. Appreciate this very much. Now to clean my needle and free up my float as it’s getting stuck!
Very clear voice of the instructor. Very useful information, thanks for your narrative and time to advise novice mechanics like myself. Getting ready to replace HP and LP pumps on my 2002 250 saltwater series.

I love it how this channel keeps these engines/boats alive on a budget! Hate mechanics that just want to throw parts at it. Will say I probably would've sprung for a new fuel pump but to each their own!
agree, maybe would have done it on a car but you cant get out of a boat and walk home, once a fuel pump starts to cause issues they tend to be near end of life and not worth the time of having to strip it all apart again just to replace a pump that should have been replaced to start with
@Bruce Lott I just picked up a 2001 200hp HPDI that sat for a year as well. Winterized in New England at the end of 2019 and sat all last year. Curious if you got yours fired up yet and/or what you’re doing before bringing it back online.
@@SD-unlimited I pulled the plugs, used a lot of fogging oil, turned it over by hand several times. I made sure the fuel pump came on, then started it up on premix . Once it fired up, I changed all the filters, changed the thermostats, removed and cleaned the injectors, cleaned the HO2S, changed the water pump. I also flushed the cooling system with vinegar to get all the scale out. I still have a couple of issues on the boat, but it's coming along. I also installed a water temperature gauge on the dash. I didn't use the Yamaha gauges due to them being faded and I had already installed new analog gauges before I changed the motor.
@@brucelott3583 Thank you for the info, I appreciate it. Sounds like you’re going through a very similar process to what I plan to. This motor was running well and fully serviced and winterized prior to being stored (outside, mounted to transom) at the end of the 2019 season. I’m not sure if the VST filter was changed. I want to ensure the I’m doing everything properly during initial startup so that there’s no mysteries or issues. I’ve got about another month to get everything sorted out with the weather improving and more consistently getting above freezing. I hope all works out good for you and that your project is a success 👍
@@brucelott3583 I have now fogged mine, turned it over by hand and everything seems to be in decent shape. I was curious though since I’m new to outboards, how did you confirm the fuel pump came on? Is it on the engine side or gas tank side like a car? We’ve got one more day this weekend where we’ll be flirting with freezing temps. After that it looks like I’ll be clear for the first startup.
Great video, I just finished doing the same thing to a 05 Optimax 225 that I boat and had water mixed with ethanol and the vst is almost 100% the same. Few different filters and such but just a quick tip to the viewers like you mentioned when you take it apart make sure you watch for the pump oring to get stuck while your removing it
I got a boat that sat for 4 years with 200hp optimax. I got the electric pumps for $211.00 and the rebuild kit for the mechanical pump for $30.00 all new, engines run great.
TH-cam University with another win! Thanks so much for the detailed breakdown! Luckily I didnt need to go to these full lengths and just needed to clean the tank out, but this video saved me at least $2500.
Thanks for the video, this is great info even though it is a few years old. It helps to know what to look for when considering purchasing an older outboard and knowing what cost could be associated with getting that older OB running again!
My yamaha outboard bogs out and will not accelerate. I checked the vst filter and look really clean. All filters are clean. O2 sensor clean. Could this be a fuel pump issue? It will fire right up and idle for hours. Its just when I try to accelerate
Thank you! I don't know what else to say except a sincere thank you for your videos. From your videos I've gained confidence, and learned to do a lot of the work on my 2014 Yamaha 300 HP, and also have learned when I need to have the pros do it.... If I had a trailer for my boat (I am looking for one now) I'd bring it to you for all the work! (I live in eastern NC, so that would be a long way!).. Thank you once more!
Hahah no, thank you! Thank you for such a nice comment! I really appreciate that :) That's awesome that you are doing more and feeling more confident with your engine. Really, I'm sure it makes being out on the water that much more enjoyable!
Repaired cars for 40 years, you are doing the same steps I did when the fuel injected motor homes got dragged in after sitting for 5 years. Now it's "We're driving it across the country in 3 days!" Ha,ha,ha,ha! Great work guys
That's awesome! Thank you for commenting :) It's so true, same story for their car or their boat, we haven't used it for 5 years and now we need it like Tomorrow, so take your time lol Thank you!
It's easy to show us how to replace all these expensive parts, no so easy to live in the real world and save money. Greetings from Vancouver Island Canada
That’s the name of the game with most outboard motors. You can go aftermarket but it only saves you so much. Honestly, really anything. Put marine grade in front of anything and you can change 2x.
thanks for great videos. I have been working on a 0x66. Couple bits of information I cannot get answers to are does the pump have a check valve in it? after prime is it to hold pressures or drop to 0 as soon as it turns off? What is the pressure range it is to run at?
Looks kind of complicated but I’m gonna try it anyway. If I have trouble I can always buy a replacement as a last resort lol. Thank you so much for taking the time to make these videos!
@@BornAgainBoating hi. I cleaned my vst but when I put it back together and started her up, I noticed gas leaking from the top outside of the vst where the wire lead terminals are hooked up? Does that mean the float isn’t working? I would think the float is supposed to stop the gas from getting that high. Any suggestions or insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. No rush. I know you are busy
Had this issue a couple years ago on my Suzuki 140, i had forgot to run some fuel conditioner thru it before putting it up for the winter and i guess the ethanol started eating into the rubber fuel lines, found small shavings of rubber in the filter, wouldnt let the motor get over 3K RPM
I love your triumph boats banner in the background of the service area! Triumphs are the shit, best boat I ever owned by far. My 17cc with 150 Evinrude has never let me down
It is becoming clear to me that fuel related issues are a major problem with outboards. In fact I think you did a video on recurring issues you see regularly and that turned out to be your #1 issue. I am assuming that this 300hp beast spent its previous life hooked up to and drinking out of a fuel/water separator filter. If that is the case, tell me nobody is running unfiltered fuel to an outboard this big and expensive, how did all that debris make its way inside the vapor separator and the various screens and components in the first place? Was the engine pickled in ethanol laden gasoline and simply abandoned to wick moisture of out that south Florida moist marine air, phase separate over time and left to deteriorate? How did it get so bad?
Thank you for this video, it helped me and out.. I want to in addition to replacing my pump want to test my fuel pump relay do you have a video on testing the relay thank you
You make it look so easy! I have OX66 200. It runs great when you give it throttle, but soon as you need to pull up to the dock and need precise throttle control, it stalls out. I've changes plugs. Next step is cleaning my VST and O2 sensor. Think those will fix my stalling issue? By the way, I run non E fuel and sea-foam in every fill up.
Really great video guys! Do you guys by chance have one on what you recommend doing to a 2006 era (200) HPDI that has been sitting for a while before splashing her?
I just started watching your channel, but I agree with William. You saved this customer alot of money by making that fuel pump work instead of just replacing it. I'm not so sure other mechanics would have put the effort into that and just replaced it. Great work, I wish you were my boat mechanic.
The part where you say don't lose this little spring.... where does that little spring go? I have a 1999 OX66 200HP and I don't think I have ever seen that little spring. I am not the original owner so perhaps its been lost along the way?
I did my vst on my 06 40 hp Merc (yammy) about 6 months ago. The pump was on ebay for like $40 if memory serves me right. At the shop, all the parts were stupid expensive though.
Nice, oh yeah, all the companies in the marine industry get a certain mark up on OEM parts! It's just part of boating :) lol Good job on fixing it though!
So, I went through this process. One, Had an issue with the port motor not running good after 3500 rpm would just fall on its face. So, I replaced my low-pressure pumps and my VST pump and filters. What I found was the previous owner appeared to have replaced the low pressure pumps, but when he installed one of them, he bolted a tie wrap behind the top pump, causing it not to seal properly to work the diaphragm. Next, after I assembled everything, the engine would not start. So I was getting volume but no pressure. The tiny O-ring on the VST pump was non existent on the old pump. So, I robbed one from my SRT4 fuel pump. Put it all back together, and my baby fired right up. That was a fun troubleshooting project. I'm going out on the boat tomorrow now!!! Edit: the boat ran great for about half hour and then went right back to the port side motor running like crap. Got home and put the pressure gauge on it and only would get up to 25psi and immediately would drop pressure. so it will be back into the VST for me. Now either the o-ring I put is in the wrong spot, too small, or blew out. Next would be the FPR took a dump. Will see what we figure out this weekend.
Aaron were you an MMI grad ? I saw the UTI sticker on you multi meter . I graduated in 2004 and have been running an independant repair shop between Raleigh and Fayetteville NC. Carolina Marine Repair. I don't see near as much newer model stuff as you are working on. Lots of challenges without ever having worked with a dealer but I have made a decent living and I love what I do. I am impressed with your knowledge and dedication to the industry. Been thinking about taking a vacation down that way maybe I will drop in for a visit and meet you guys !
That's awesome Jon! Congrats on the success! Yes, I graduated in 2012 so I haven't been turning wrenches as long but we do get to see a ton of stuff roll through the shop. Thank you and let me know if you guys decide to go on vacation down here :)
Great video. In this process. I have a 2002 sx200, my float didnt have a spring, thought maybe I lost it in disassembly. I checked manual and doesnt apear to have one....I hope not...will know tomorrow...side note, my pump was as nasty if not more.....tried your method of getting it free...soaked it for 24 hours in carb fuel cleaner.... reversed polarity back and forth.....nothing....feel it move but just am intial click. I ordered a new one. After new one comes 5 days later and old one laying on the bench, I had to give it another shot, I put the leads on it and boom freed and moving.....really! Sigh, guess I have extra pump now....
Is the vmaxx 250 hpdi the same? We having issues that when trying to plane, it lets go, grabs again & lets goo. Making it hard to get the boat on plqne. So far we added new fuel lines, new primer pump, we are going to check if fuel pressure drops then start cleaning eveeything again, we had issues with bad fuel at first.
Great video. Only thing is $800 for a fuel pump? All the vst fuel pumps I’ve ever changed (which is a common thing) cost between $40-100 depending on which engine (Yamablah always seems to be the most expensive). Unless you are talking about $800 being because you didn’t change it and two weeks later your 40 miles off shore at Jeffries ledge tuna fishing and your pump fails and your $600 a year membership of towboat is kicking in now your drinking $100 in beer waiting for the towboat to arrive lol. For real great video and some good tricks on all your videos. Thanks for sharing.
Lol, yeah, Yamaha does put some ridiculous prices on their parts. I ended up putting an $80 Axiom pump in this one, that other pump didn't seem to have enough vacuum after getting it freed up. :)
Hi, my vst filter on my 115s have been getting clogged very fast with the white ethenol type sand/powder. I literally just installed a brand new fuel tank. These motors seem super sensitive to the smallest particles. Would you reccomend running a 2 micron fuel/water seperator to catch the smaller debris that pass right through the 10
Frist, let me say how much I enjoyed your three part series of waking up this engine. That said, I have a 115 yamaha that has been setting up for about 5 years in storage. I'm 74 years young. May I ask what would it cost me to have someone do what you just did with this engine? Dose not have to be exact but in the ball park would be great.
Well that depends on how the engine was put away, and the hourly rate. If it needs work like what was done here estimate about 8 hours of labor, but if it was put away fogged, the. It could be a matter of 2-4 hours and some spark plugs and fuel filters!
I think it's worth mentioning how to free up the canister filter from the "Chinese finger torture" clamp (not the Oetiker, the reusable end) as most people haven't seen that and will likely damage it before they figure it out on their own. Do you like to use needle-nose or a trim panel tool or what?
What would a repair like this cost, on average? What should I expect to pay. Looking at a house boat that needs both of its outboards and the generator overhauled.
Greetings from Ireland. New sub here. Very good. Question. I have a Johnson 200 electronic fuel injection. Can. Clean the injectors the same way? Would it be better to ultrasound clean them ? I hav3 the same problem as you not enough fuel I think. Keep up the great videos.
Great video! i have watched it numerous times. I replaced the top section of the VST and when I put it back together, there's no fuel being pumped put of the VST. What type of tester did you use to test the pump? Looks like the pump in my VST is not working and before I buy one, I'd like to test it to see if it runs. Thanks!
I cant believe you would not bead blast the vst tank.I would fire one of my guys for putting that nasty thing back together without it being spotless. As far as the pump goes there's no way its going to last after being locked up. Tried it a few times to help a costumer out and they ALL came back. I"ll do everything i can to help my costumers out and save them money but not there. I dont want them going offshore and the junk pump die. Ive been working on Yamaha's since 1985 in my own shop. FYI.
Hi I have DF115 and fuel is going in the oil. The low psi filter is brand new. How does the float valve work? I’m wondering if my float valve isn’t closing. Like maybe the float valve needle is stuck or something.
Usually something going on with the float and needle valve assembly inside the vst. The float is what closes everything off. You'll have to open it up and investigate :)
Can vst cause rich condition? I have a 2000 merc 200 efi. I changed trigger based off rough running but didn’t fix. I decarbed using sea foam and afterwards it ran same. I noticed before and after that plugs are wet after running. Any ideas? I have service manual
That’s so interesting that they shut 2 pistons at idle. Are there any other outboards that do this? I guess it would need direct or multi port injection to do this? An OX66 can’t do this right? Since the injectors are through the crank case?
Mercury 50 hp marine engine fuel is not coming to the spark plugs. I am thinking. injectors are solid. ecu is solid. When you add a few drops of gasoline into the cylinders, the engine starts and then stops. Cylinder pressure is very good. When you press the starter to start the engine, oily gasoline comes out of the exhaust. Can you help me? Also, there are syringes inside the log. I don't understand what they do. Greetings from Turkey.
Hello my pump diagram says it has a small o ring with the plastic spacer. Does the o ring slide over the spacer or do I put the o ring in before the spacer. It is hard to tell from the diagram and unfortunately someone had already put in an aftermarket fuel pump with no o ring or spacer. So i cannot see how it was originally set up. Thank you
the plastic piece that is on top of the vst pump where the wire connector is, is there some sort of gasket that goes there? I didn't hear or see any mention of one in the video
Nope, just that plastic piece, most other VST's have a rubber grommet that goes there. For whatever reason, this VST just has that little white plastic piece that goes on the output port of the pump and slides up into the top of the VST.
We've seen them hit 2-3K but they are slowly fading away because of the age and time factor. Keep yours running as long as possible, those 200s are an amazing engine!
Most likely the gasket around the high pressure pump is broken or cracked or whatever and is pressurizing the VST which is pushing fuel out in weird spots :/ If you get stumped, you can look into joining our Boater's Program where we have messaging and a place to upload pictures and videos so we could talk about the issue and give our recommendations during a weekly livestream: boaters.bornagainboating.com/signup/ Hopefully you've figured it out by now and are back on the water though :) best of luck!
When I turn on my key, I do not hear the pump inside the vat kicking on, could there be something I need to do first before I do the steps in this video? I am a fiberglass and refinishing guy and only touch my own outboard and I’m having issues on my personal boat. Any tips on how or what to volt meter test before going through taking my VST apart?
You can check the voltage going to the VST pump, make sure it has 12v when the key is turned on, it might cycle so check it as soon as you turn the key on, it might only supply voltage for 5-10 sec and then wait for you to turn the key to try and start it.
Hello Henry, thank you! If you don't have any running issues and the engine is running properly. You don't need to clean it out. Usually the only reason you will need to go into the VST is if you get a batch of bad gas and suck up a bunch of stuff, or the engine has sat for a few years and has gummed up. Besides that you should be good to go without messing with it :)
If you store the boat, say if you’re in a climate that sees four seasons (I’m from Ohio), part of the winterization process is draining the VST AFTER you’ve ran stabilized fuel through the engine for a period of about ten minutes, and after fogging has been completed.
I have a Mercury 40hp 4 stroke EFI. I did a pressure test on my VST and I'm getting 70psi which is very high. It is suppose to be at 42-44psi. I put in a new high pressure fuel pump, but I'm still getting the same 70psi reading. Any ideas on what could be causing the high pressure? Your help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
That's odd. 70 is a lot! I could only think of an issue with your pressure regulator or possibly your pressure gauge ;) Most of the time the pressure regulator causes a loss of fuel pressure, but I guess it is a possibility that it could raise the pressure too! Other than that maybe a gasket not seated properly on the output side of the high pressure pump?
Thanks for the reply! I thought of the pressure regulator too, but it seemed fine when I had to change the high pressure fuel pump out. The pressure gauge is brand new and was pretty spendy, so I wouldn't think it to be that. I just bought it last week to test out the VST. I was having issues with the motor restarting when hot and couldn't hear the fuel pump kick in after that either. That's why I bought a new pump. This is really stumping me!! I haven't ran it long enough to see if the restarting issue has gone away. I'm afraid of the pressure being that high though. Do I run a risk of ruining anything if it's that high?
No worries! Ok, so the gauge is good. You don't really run too big of a risk, because if the fuel pressure is that high, the engine should run pretty terribly and have some issues. The pressure regulator is the only thing I can think of off the top of my head. How much are they?
The ones that I have seen online are around $30. That is around the same price as the fuel pump I bought. The only problem is it's a lot harder to find the right make and model pressure regulator for my motor unlike the pump, that was easy to find. The mystery deepens however. I took the boat out around the lake yesterday for about an hour or so, and it seemed ok. It didn't run rough or have problems accelerating or anything. It was still reading 70psi though! How is this possible? I tried letting it sit for about 25 minutes after running to see if I could get it to do that cranking with no fire issue like the first problem I had, but it started right up again. I don't think I let it sit long enough though, because before it seemed I'd have to wait at least an hour or so of not running it to get it to do the cranking with no fire. I'm going to try again today and see how it goes waiting at least an hour this time. I did notice though with the cowling off, I could hear a slight almost like a pulsating hissing noise that went with the sound of the motor coming from the opposite side that the VST is on. It also got louder when accelerating. I'm not sure if that is normal or not? My thought was maybe it was pressure being released somewhere from having such high fuel pressure in the VST. It's really strange, and I'm really confused...
Hmm that is interesting, if you want to email me your serial number I could look up the pressure regulator and get you the correct part number. The serial number will be on the starboard side of the engine bracket and will begin with 1 number then it will have a letter and then 6 more numbers, it will look something like this: 1C123456. Not sure what else to say on the pressure side of things. That hissing sound is most likely the idle air controller, that's a normal sound. Hopefully you have fixed it and are now over thinking it :) let me know how it goes!
I’ve cleaned and bench tested my pump motor and it seems to work fine. When I cycle the key I usually hear the pump motor cut on to pressurize the VST but now when I turn the key to ON I hear no noise and the motor doesn’t run? I tested the power supply into the fuel pump motor when cycling the key and still I power. I also checked the fuses on the starboard panel and all are ok? Am I missing something. Also all the power supply plugs are in and snug.
Question, i noticed that my vst tank has a slow leak from one of the phillip screws that hold the tank together, i i did put a new gasket on how do i fix this? Could it be just the gasket or do i need to look at something else?
They are hit and miss. Don't go for the cheapest one. I've put one in and it only produced 10PSI! So go with the midrange price pumps. The Axiom pump for these HPDI's seems to be the best one and it's only like $80 or so compared to the OEM at like $600 or so! Obviously OEM comes with no issues, but for saving over $500 ;) that's what I've done personally.
hey guys you are great i have a problem i would like to share with I have Evinrude 140 HP it has been sitting for 8 month I have hired 3 mechanics and all of them thye come they guess and they couldn't Start the engine the engine spin but don't start what do you think is the problem my belives is Stupid things not making the engine to start please help
Probably something to do with the spark or the timing. Evinrudes, depending on the year, have issues like that. Where the timing gets thrown off and they won't fire up but will spin all day. You need an Evinrude tech that knows how to troubleshoot the electrical system :) (That is if the fuel system and other things are operating properly, it could be something as simple as the keyswitch! Has anyone checked for spark?)
Fuel pressure :) you can tighten the fuel pumps that sit behind it or take them off and open them, they are like 40 bucks so most people just replace them
The fuel pump can be bought for around 30 to 50 dollars. There is nothing special about these pumps they have a lot of other uses in automobiles etc. Simply because it is on a marine engine is why it cost so much. I replaced the one on my 2002 Mercury outboard 115 HP 4 stroke EFI and I bought it on line. Simply get the original mfg part number and do a search on Google. You will find what you need if you just look.
Depends, shop around is the best way my friend, sometimes dealers give you deals and have stuff available that day, other times you don't need the parts rigth then and there and can get a deal online
Just curious, is it still working? How many hours on the pump after getting it going?
@@juanchy07 yep sure Is, I’ve probably put ten hours on it and still runs great. But when I fixed the pump, the motor only had about 20 hours on it.

Seems like a lot when you watch someone else do it. But when you do it yourself it kind of all comes back to you as you start re assembling
Superb reassuring you actually attempt to fix than just buy in parts to save time but realise sometimes that's more cost effective.

Man, that’s a great series of videos on how to revive an engine that’s been sitting. ❤️
Thank you for taking the time to make the video. Very helpful
I love it how this channel keeps these engines/boats alive on a budget! Hate mechanics that just want to throw parts at it. Will say I probably would've sprung for a new fuel pump but to each their own!
agree, maybe would have done it on a car but you cant get out of a boat and walk home, once a fuel pump starts to cause issues they tend to be near end of life and not worth the time of having to strip it all apart again just to replace a pump that should have been replaced to start with
I just got a 2002 200hp HPDI that has been sitting for over a year. This is great info for my project. Glad I found your channel. Subscribed!
Welcome aboard!
Few different filters and such but just a quick tip to the viewers like you mentioned when you take it apart make sure you watch for the pump oring to get stuck while your removing it
Excellent job of showing the step-by-step directions, Thanks
Great video just wondering if its ok revving motor in great out of water always been told not to do that but I don't know
I got a boat that sat for 4 years with 200hp optimax. I got the electric pumps for $211.00 and the rebuild kit for the mechanical pump for $30.00 all new, engines run great.
That's awesome! It's amazing how different brands make certain parts this astronomical price and then other parts are reasonable!
Yup, I saw some scary OEM Optimax parts, then looked aftermarket and saw far lower numbers.
Working on mine and not as rusted but found some rust from the actual electric pump surface. This shows so much to do and thanks!
TH-cam University with another win! Thanks so much for the detailed breakdown! Luckily I didnt need to go to these full lengths and just needed to clean the tank out, but this video saved me at least $2500.
Great video your a great mechanic I enjoy watching you work on repairing boats .
Thanks 👍
Thanks for the video, this is great info even though it is a few years old. It helps to know what to look for when considering purchasing an older outboard and knowing what cost could be associated with getting that older OB running again!
This is an excellent video. Precise and to the point, very articulate. Great little tips to salvage VST.
My yamaha outboard bogs out and will not accelerate. I checked the vst filter and look really clean. All filters are clean. O2 sensor clean. Could this be a fuel pump issue? It will fire right up and idle for hours. Its just when I try to accelerate
congrats on 1 thousand subs, im sure your channel will take off your videos are enjoyable to watch.
Thanks bro! We'll see, I'm glad that they are helpful and that it's helping more people stay out on the water :)
Great Videos ..all of them ... A great service to the boating community...thank you
Thanks for watching!
Ive learned more about VST with this video than i did at MMI
Lol
mmi is a entry level path to the marine industry. The Ricky Sitka
You can do it!
I want to in addition to replacing my pump want to test my fuel pump relay do you have a video on testing the relay thank you
nice...what do you think of the aftermarket hp fuel pumps now available for the hpdi's?
A big shout to you for such a great and informative video. Keep up the good work 👍
Thank you! Will do!
Yes, the O2 and the VST would be the next places to look if its stalling at idle, hopefully you find something when you pull it open
Really great video guys! Do you guys by chance have one on what you recommend doing to a 2006 era (200) HPDI that has been sitting for a while before splashing her?
You are one of the best outboard tech out there
Idk about all that, but thank you!
I just started watching your channel, but I agree with William. You saved this customer alot of money by making that fuel pump work instead of just replacing it. I'm not so sure other mechanics would have put the effort into that and just replaced it. Great work, I wish you were my boat mechanic.
Like the way this guy explain the videos, thanks for your time!! Very useful !!
Thank you!
Should you be able to here the fuel pump come on when you turn the ignition switch on before cranking? I think mine took a dump.
I showed that in last weeks video :) I use my Leatherman or a flat head screw driver :)
What would a repair like this cost, on average? What should I expect to pay. Looking at a house boat that needs both of its outboards and the generator overhauled.
All the videos are very informative love them all .
Thank you!
Great video!!!! Thanks for all you do
Very helpful keep up the good work and thanks for all the good info...
Great video even tho it’s. Yamaha I’m about to tackle 02 Opti that’s been sitting upright for a few years basically VST same in
This dude is good! What is that sensor under the VST?
Greetings from Ireland. New sub here. Very good. Question. I have a Johnson 200 electronic fuel injection. Can. Clean the injectors the same way? Would it be better to ultrasound clean them ? I hav3 the same problem as you not enough fuel I think. Keep up the great videos.
Awesome videos I've owned about 20 put boards everthing from 25 yamahas up to 150 hp
So my vst terminals for the pump are loose should they be ? I noticed in the video that you left them on and unplugged the harness jumper
Good video. I personally would have went through the lift pumps as well....
Nice work, is blue grease locking grease?
Great video! i have watched it numerous times. I replaced the top section of the VST and when I put it back together, there's no fuel being pumped put of the VST. What type of tester did you use to test the pump? Looks like the pump in my VST is not working and before I buy one, I'd like to test it to see if it runs. Thanks!
Thanks! Just use a battery and two wire leads to hook to the pump to run it
@@BornAgainBoating thank you!!!
Any chance you have a video on replacing trim sensor? Love your video's. Thanks for all the info.
Yes, I do! It's on a F225 but I haven't made the video yet. Thank you, and I'll be working on getting that video made in the upcoming weeks!
At 3:40 mn you showd the presser regulater, it shold be free like the filter or it shold not be totally free?
That’s intense work there! Great job!
Yeah, this one was pretty bad, thank you!
Thanks for the great video, I have a mercury 115 efi. I have fuel leak out of the VST vent hoses.. any idea on what could be the cause?
Usually something going on with the float and needle valve assembly inside the vst. The float is what closes everything off. You'll have to open it up and investigate :)
My pump is spinning, but on boat after a while it starts to sputter, the engine rpm s are falling.is there a way to check it while out with voltmeter.
No, I think that the HPDI's are the only ones that do this :/
Can you tell me what the schrader valve is used for going to the vst? What should the pressure be and how do you test it?
Its for testing the fuel pressure, and it depends on the engine, most are around 45psi
Can you do one on a 2006 mercury optimax 150 vst tank please thank you .
This will be similiar: th-cam.com/video/XmtI6K5i0bU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=2uYk3dssdrJvan-n
Thank you
Forgot to list the motor 2006 hpdi motor vz225tlr
the plastic piece that is on top of the vst pump where the wire connector is, is there some sort of gasket that goes there? I didn't hear or see any mention of one in the video
Nope, just that plastic piece, most other VST's have a rubber grommet that goes there. For whatever reason, this VST just has that little white plastic piece that goes on the output port of the pump and slides up into the top of the VST.
Have you found a way to stop the insides from flaking off once they get the back white haze inside from saltwater intrusion into fuel system?
Not really, saltwater intrusion is hard on anything that it gets to. The best we can do is just clean it out :)
@Born Again Boating great video. How many hours are theses HPDI engines good for if well maintained. My 200 hp is at 900 hours
We've seen them hit 2-3K but they are slowly fading away because of the age and time factor. Keep yours running as long as possible, those 200s are an amazing engine!
@@BornAgainBoating thank you! I watch all of the Tuesday videos. Love the channel!
About too take apart my VST tank , Fuel seems too be coming from under the brown plastic connector , blue wire , Any ideas why this is happening
Most likely the gasket around the high pressure pump is broken or cracked or whatever and is pressurizing the VST which is pushing fuel out in weird spots :/

Like your video i have a question. I have a 2004 hpdi 175 do i need to clean my Vapor separate tank out. thanks you Henry
You’re the best!
Thank you for the videos!
Hello, can you recommend a good mechanic for a 150 HPDI on the Hialeah area, thanks in advance for the help.
Sorry, I dont know anyone up there :(
I have a Mercury 40hp 4 stroke EFI.
What is your opinion on a after market fuel pump vs OE
They are hit and miss. Don't go for the cheapest one. I've put one in and it only produced 10PSI! So go with the midrange price pumps. The Axiom pump for these HPDI's seems to be the best one and it's only like $80 or so compared to the OEM at like $600 or so! Obviously OEM comes with no issues, but for saving over $500 ;) that's what I've done personally.
What are you using when you say contact cleaner? Carb choke cleaner?
Yamaha brake and contact cleaner, acc-brkct-12-00
hey guys you are great i have a problem i would like to share with I have Evinrude 140 HP it has been sitting for 8 month I have hired 3 mechanics and all of them thye come they guess and they couldn't Start the engine the engine spin but don't start what do you think is the problem my belives is Stupid things not making the engine to start please help
How do you know if you have a VST issue or the fuel pumps that sit behind the VST?
Fuel pressure :) you can tighten the fuel pumps that sit behind it or take them off and open them, they are like 40 bucks so most people just replace them
The fuel pump can be bought for around 30 to 50 dollars. There is nothing special about these pumps they have a lot of other uses in automobiles etc. Simply because it is on a marine engine is why it cost so much. I replaced the one on my 2002 Mercury outboard 115 HP 4 stroke EFI and I bought it on line. Simply get the original mfg part number and do a search on Google. You will find what you need if you just look.
Great info for us weekend mechanics
Saved me 1600.00 Thank you so much
Does the 2004 Yamaha F225VSRT also drop out a few cylinders when idling?
I dont think the F225s do
Is it better to biy part from dealer or online
Depends, shop around is the best way my friend, sometimes dealers give you deals and have stuff available that day, other times you don't need the parts rigth then and there and can get a deal online
