Wow, what an awesome farm strip! I bet that was cheap and easy to build... not! These model planes of yours are really coming along. I didn't realise you could actually fly them from inside now :)

My god, everything about this video was fascinating. I've never seen such clear prop or wingtip vortices, never seen a runway with a slope, and never seen or even heard of a air tractor. Really cool stuff!

???! City dweller? Air Tractor are pretty well the standard crop duster machine from my farming experience. Always exciting just watching 'em. Though, as you see them dive onto a field surrounded by tall gum trees, hurtle across undulating ground, thread under 66kv transmission lines then haul back to clear the gum trees and hill beyond, you realise that a broad streak of insanity is a definite prerequisite for a career in crop dusting! ;-)
Spectacular video of the vortices in the morning mist - never seen anything like it here. Unique set-up suggests that this operator has survived long enough in the game to achieve "Top Gun" status. Possibly the standard NZ cartoon postcard of a sheer cliff with a single straggly right-angled tree growing out of it and a helicopter dangling from a blade driven through it might have been posed for by this fellah! :D

I wonder what it looks like inside of the cockpit when the vortices surround you.

Good to see the Hoerner wingtips working so well, the vortices are nominal showing high efficiency. The Hoerner tip design is rated at 95% efficiency.
Lovely location and camera work, really enjoyed seeing it so thank you for sharing. When travelling throughout NZ I was forunate enough to see this happening and also when flying my microlight watching them work the paddocks and do the runway dance. Some of the latter are very basic, your runway setup is very good.

I've always thought that a bent runway like this might be more space efficient for certain aircraft. Would be hard to land like this in a 747 on a huge runway like this but for small aircraft this looks perfect.

Runway looks fine and layout understandable given the terrain all around your site.
Just wondering why, whomever built or designed it, didn't include a sealed turn-around section at the top.
After all, those rocks have to be the operators worst enemy with possible prop damage if any decide to get thrown up during turn-around.
Admittedly a bit more prop clearance than your average Cessna 172 (not one would ever be plomping one in there..... 😊) however, a potential problem just the same I would have thought.

    • @iforce2d
      @iforce2d  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah I was surprised too, that the top section didn't go over a little further on at least one side, since the plane always turns around on the same side and it's only a few more meters compared to the overall area of concrete laid. After a while the unsealed section will subside so that there's a significant edge to climb up... I think.
I was hoping for more width at the top, would have been more helpful for my planes :)

High relative humidity in the air condenses as pressure rises due to airfoil interactions, makes the wing tip vortices and prop blade tip vortices visible.

A truly amazing operational setup, and fantastic meteorological conditions to capture.
Can't help but wonder what kind of FPV tunnel effect is viewable from the pilot's perspective (4:50, 6:22).
As completes turn on short, turbine sound changes, suggesting increasing RPM prior to touchdown. (1:56, 6:46). The propeller pitch is definitely decreasing, not sure if just flat, or using any reverse pitch to aid in STOL at touchdown. This an impressive no wind STOL operation.
Is interesting to see that while diameter of vortex rings don't really change, the trailing length of tail does increase with wing loading (and propeller blade loading). The takeoff runs are so fascinating.
Thanks for the effort, and time capturing and editing. Very educational and spectacular videography. :)
Great timing BTW, as Top-Gun: Maverick was released at theatres this weekend (US).

@@iforce2d Ok! Thanks for your reply.
At the same time, I want to answer your question you asked me on my channel. There may be more people who wonder why they use helicopters to spread, in this case lime on lakes, instead of by boat.
The lakes in this case are many, are remote and most have no road connection at all. At best, there is only one forest road, it still can not carry a truck with 40,000 kg of lime. It's just about logistics here. However, the helicopter spreads 40 tons in about 1.5 hours on average. Of course we use a boat as much as possible, but it requires a drivable road all the way to the lake. I hope I explained well enough.
