    I agree with NC on this, what he said about this special can apply to the Peanuts franchise as well; it's simple and basic, but it knows that being big and grand isn't always the way to go, it stays simple while providing some good jokes here and there, that's basically why the Peanuts Specials are so popular and why the the recent 2015 CGI Film was so sucessful both Critically and Financially.
    I know Peanuts isn't the greatest thing ever, but i still am gonna love it and always hold on to those specials in my heart.

    • @junodonatus4906
      @junodonatus4906 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The "real meaning" is what exactly? Considering that celebrating this time of year, gift giving, etc. go back to the origins of human agricultural society. Just because Christianity appropriated it doesn't make it theirs (truth be known, the nativity is a non-historic account). I have no beef against religion btw, just that the majority of traditions and symbolism associated with holidays like Christmas and Easter are pagan in origin.
      I prefer to look at Christmas and New Year's as a time to celebrate and think of family and relationships that are special to me. Yes, it's called "Christ" mas just as Thursday is also "Thor's" day yet I don't worship Thor.

    As a Christian, that line about people preaching kindness and yet practicing discrimination and being mean really was important to me. I try to be as kind as I can, but i hear about a lot of religious fanatics who are mean or derogatory to other people. I am glad that it doesn't happen AS often as people say it does - I've met quite a few atheists who say Christians are some of the nicest people they've met - but I would love it if my fellow followers would begin to adhere more to what they preach. Don't just SAY you're going to be kind and tolerant but do the exact opposite. And i think liberals could learn a lot from this too. They're acting exactly like the intolerant people they claim to be against. Love Trump's hate? Trump is stupid for not accepting the election results? Well, then, why are you doing exactly that?

      The ones who say they are Christians in one breath then say very un-Christian things in the next....they've got it all wrong. And they make the rest of us - the vast majority - look like racists, etc. Is it any wonder atheists are so vocally hateful of us? All they see is crude people on social media. If they ever walked into a church the perception that we are all bigots would vanish.

    My favorite Christmas special is Nightmare before Christmas. I can watch it from October 1st to January 1st and not grow tired of it. The characters are great, the designs are out of this world, and the songs are unforgettable, no matter how hard you try to get them out of your head. The best part is, it mixes together the two best holidays of the year: Christmas and Halloween, a combo, that wouldn't normally go together, and it's pretty obvious why. All in all, The Nightmare Before Christmas is a great special that I look foreword to watching every year.

And though I can have fun with the dark overtone, you don't touch my bright December with something like that.

    Nostaligia Criitic really hit on the true depth of this Christmas special.
    A part of me really resonated with Charlie Brown in his search for the meaning of Christmas.
    . I was about 10 years old the previous summer I had my first job so this Christmas I was going to be buying presents with my own money. this made the gifts more special to me. I was done shopping but was stuck on getting something for my mom. I remember walking into a small gift shop and I found a pretty hand mirror,comb and brush set. Excited I placed it with the cashier. but I was $5.95 short. I apologized to the cashier and was about to put it back when the owner said we forgot to apply the $5.95 Christmas discount. It was then that I truly understood what Charlie Brown was trying to understand. It was about charity and love for your fellow man. I never forgot the owners kindness. I try to not only buy gifts but try to capture that Christmas spirit every year.

    As a late '70s baby, this was a staple. I still can hear the CBS "Special" percussive fanfare that preceded this and so many other televised classics.
    To me, this is sweetness and cynicism perfectly balanced. The CBS executives didn't want to run it, fearing that a cartoon with jazz, religious references, and stilted acting would flop, but the legend goes that one animator in the screening room declared the special would run for 100 years.
    I even own the soundtrack on vinyl and have a lot of Vince Guaraldi's work on Peanuts included on my Spotify playlists. The music is what pulls it all together. I think it helped me cultivate broader tastes. It didn't have to hoot and ply me with bombastic showtunes to win me over.

      +mynameisDAQ No. It doesn't have to have to be there. You don't need to quote the bible to inspire love between one and another. Why would you need to? What does a quote from the bible have that some other way of saying the entire message couldn't do? The quote isn't what people remember, it's the meaning of that quote that people remember. Something could of been told in many different ways, but would of still have the same effect. So tell me, why does this even remotely matter that some people don't quote some ancient book when doing their interpetation of the entire special and it's meaning when the message and inspiration is the same as the special? Nostalgia isn't a good reason.

  • @bartsimpson83
    @bartsimpson83 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    This is an excellent analysis. However, I must say it makes me sad that most people's knowledge of the Charlie Brown specials extends to - at most - the christmas special, the halloween special and Snoopy Come Home. While all three of those are great, there were so many other fantastic episodes that have been completely forgotten. If someone asked me what I thought the best Charlie Brown special was, my number one pick would be "What Have We Learned?", an epilogue to the film "Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown" that gives the audience a serious and moving lesson about the two world wars and the price we paid for victory that's just as powerful now as it was when it first aired.

    Hey NC. Thanks for this video. I'm a Christian and I agree; there's little to "no bullshit" in this Christmas Special. I am usually happy to see Linus speak Luke 2:8-14. I can't recall any other GOOD Christmas Specials tell the true meaning of Christmas. But I also had forgotten to apply these words of wisdom, truth, and fact to my life. Hey, I screw up. I'll try to keep this in mind not just for Christmas, but a lifetime. I appreciate you bringing this up. Merry Christmas!

    • @antonanderson1965
      @antonanderson1965 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      As a fellow Christian myself, I agree as well. The scriptures are great, but too many people these days forget that scripture is meant to be applied. Just because it meant something different in its original context, it doesn't mean that it still can't have other meanings. The amazing thing about the scriptures is that there is more than one application, whether it be its original meaning in context, prophetic scriptures of future events including the life and ministry of Jesus Christ, or modern day applications for us the readers. The message of Christmas is universal: peace on earth, goodwill towards men; the message of hope, simplicity, celebration, giving to others, brotherhood, and loving your neighbor. Ultimately, Christmas is about the Savior, who came as mortal man despite being the Son of God, the Creator and the Great Jehovah Himself. He who was the promised Messiah, the anointed King of the Jews, came down to earth to be born in the humblest of settings, to have a manger for His crib. Of course, we wouldn't have Christmas if we didn't have Easter. The joy of the birth of the Savior is incomplete without remembering who He was and what He was destined to do: to suffer and die on the cross, and live again on that first Easter morning; conquering death and sin so that He may be our Redeemer, that we too may live again and be saved from sin and death. That is why we celebrate this Christmas season--to remember the birth of Him who crushed the serpent's head and suffered all of the sins, pains, unfairness, temptations, sicknesses, and afflictions of all mankind, so that He might know how to comfort us, save us, and deliver us from sin and death. Because of Him, death has no sting, the grave has no victory, Satan has no lasting power. Whenever we decorate our Christmas trees this season, and hang the ornaments on it, let us not forget the tree the Savior of the world Himself was hung on, who suffered death that all mankind might live. Merry Christmas to all and have a wonderful holiday season!

    I'll admit, when I saw this video in my subscriptions list, my heart sunk. I was really worried that Doug was gonna tell me everything wrong with this movie, and as I usually agree with him, I was worried I would see all the flaws by the end as well. But this video reminds me of why he's my favorite critic. Yeah sure he can go a little crazy and nitpick things a bit too much, but man when he gets it right, he really gets it right. Not only did he make me appreciate this movie more, but I think he might've also given people the urge to go rewatch this one. The beauty really is in the simplicity. Because we don't always need insanely good animation or laugh out loud humor. Sometimes we just need that simple touch to remind us of what Christmas is about and what it means to us. So thank you critic, I needed this video.

    This is probably one of my favorite Nostalgia Critic editorials to date. I found his views and ideas about the Charlie Brown Christmas special very interesting and new. I never even thought about what actually went into the special and the connections that could be made from it. I think that this kind of video would actually make for an interesting series. I know he's done Raiders of the Lost Story Arc and Was That Real, with one asking if a show holds up today and one asking why was this show was a thing at all, and even several editorials go over if something is overrated or why something stuck with us for so long, but I think that he could do a series dedicated to explaining why classic cartoons like this are popular and memorable. I dunno, just a thought. Anyone else this would be interesting? (Again, I understand there are several Nostalgia Critic episodes like this, but I think it could be taken further)

    The song "Linus and Lucy", which is considered the Charlie Brown theme song, was given its exposure through the Christmas Special. It wasn't really known (outside the jazz circuit) before then, so it's not that people drag it into other Christmas songs, it's that people associate that song with Christmas, since that's when a lot of kids first heard it.

  • @blackbuttonbailey
    @blackbuttonbailey 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Linus quoting the scripture was flawless and timeless not only because he just said it but like NC said it inspired Charlie and the other children to care for the tree. To me, The tree was kind of symbolism of Jesus Christ not being born in a mansion or even a house but a manger and because people believed that He would change the world, that there was so much more to learn from that infant, the importance of His birth holds a significance and power that will last forever. Whether in 1965 or 2015 or 3015, if Merry Christmas Charlie Brown was not made, no other children's holiday special besides the Little Drummer Boy would even get close, let alone go past those boundaries in such a mature, thought provoking and honest way. That's why to me it's one of the best Christmas specials of all time if not the most. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone!

    I tend to watch this special every year on Christmas eve along with "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" and "The Man Who Came to Dinner." But I love this special because the animation on the level of Rocky and Bullwinkle but I find it has a charm to it that I would never find in modern animation. The music, Peanuts was my gateway to Jazz as a child that I have the music of the Vince Guaraldi Trio on CD, it is top notch. The message is simple but it's not mired in cheesiness or schmaltz. Where as the Garfield Christmas special is extremely cheesy that I can barely watch it, and I love Garfield. I think that's why people will play this special every year and like a lot things its become a family tradition much like reading the Christmas Carol, 'Twas the Night Before Christmas or watching "It's a Wonderful Life."

We can call their guilt (as a jury), We cannot condemn them for their acts (as a judge). That is God's job. We are supposed to say what they're doing wrong and help them into the light, even if we aren't in the light all the time ourselves. 7:38 Charles Shultz quoted the Bible a few more times in the comics. So I'm not sure if doing it in the special was just because it was different.

    When I was a kid in the 80s, we were limited to 2 channels. Also, we had Saturday morning cartoons and afternoon specials.
    So when shows like Charlie Brown Christmas, Grinch, Rudolph and so on came around, those were special moments.

    You want to know why? There's one reason, it's something no other Christmas special draws attention to. Jesus Christ. This Christmas Special tells us what Christmas is all about when no other Christmas Special dares to say. It's about the birth of Jesus Christ, and the movie tells us why that's important. And it's dead serious about that. And if you can't see why that's so important, you won't understand why this special is as beloved as it is.

    • @votewithbullets5027
      @votewithbullets5027 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes it did. And it also said that commercialism is ALSO the true meaning of Christmas. Charlie Brown's tree of "love" was saved by Snoopy's glitz, eh?
      Ultimately, the show tells us there is no "wrong way" to celebrate Christmas. Whether spiritual or consumerist ... the holiday can be enjoyed any way we choose. It is all good.

      @@Blunko_McSqwuntley First of all, it's Pagan not Pagen. Second of all, the roots are in the Pagan holiday of solstice true, but I see no harm in Christians choosing to celebrate their faith alongside their Pagan brothers and sisters. There's no reason to get so rude on behalf of a religion I would venture a guess you don't even follow. Most of the Pagans I know are very nice people who get a chuckle out of the fact that almost all Christian holidays were adopted from them because Christians just couldn't make them stop celebrating no matter how they tried. Lighten up man.

    You Doug, I don't know if you can tell from my name, I'm not a christian but Yule (or Christmas to those who are unclear with its true origins to the Germanic Pegans) has a very special feeling to me, and when I was a kid and I first saw this, I was hooked and I loved this special. Every time I celebrate Yule, I always think back to the first memory of Christmas (Technically when I was 9 or 10 is the earliest Christmas I can remember) how I went over to my Grandparents to celebrate by eating good food, opening presents on Christmas eve, and just being a family. I truly look back with fond memories and joy. So like you, I have a special spot for Yule and I celebrate the teachings of being kind to your fellow man.

    Maybe it's just an Amreican thing, but I'd never even heard of this special, or any other Peanuts special, until Doug brought it up in a video. While I did like the comics as a kid (though I admit I just thought of them as "Snoopy" comics) it's never really been a big thing in Australia that I know of, or at least not for a while and not to this level.

      +Aaron O'neil The Peanuts were a huge thing in America (and kinda still are) around the 60's,70's, and 80's. Mass commercialization and marketing kinda tainted it though, so now it's not as huge.

    Back before home video and you could watch this when ever you wanted, Charlie Brown Christmas usually came on TV the day you went on Christmas vacation. It was a huge milestone in your child hood. You got home from school, usually the Friday before Christmas and sat around the 19" Magnavox TV and waited for it to start.

      From the looks of his clips, namely of the opening, he doesn't have the version with the sponsorship. It's kind of an obscure trivia since only the initial airings and none of the home releases included it.

      +sonicgamer42 if they didn't sponsor it, it wouldn't have gotten made. I don't even think it impedes the meaning. The season is not about advertising, that is obviously true, but the ads don't impede the message. They more or less acted as a film credit, saying things like "this film was paid for by the Coca Cola Company", they helped out with the movie in that aspect.

    CBS green-lit this cartoon in late July of 1965. I defy anyone to try and come up with a cartoon, get kid voice actors and an outstanding score in that time. Of course it's gonna be rushed and confusing, but this still stands as a Christmas standard.

    Just now found this in 2021, and I'm 62 years of age. I have watched this EVERY year. As a child growing up poor on a farm in rural Tennessee, this ''Christmas special'' holds so much meaning to me. I felt that I a was 'Charlie Brown' in so many ways. ''Mother'' thought more of her sisters' family than me. ''Father would beat me over anything, everything, and nothing. Older ''sister'' thought she was the 'Center of the Universe'. So maybe some might catch the jest of this. Leave this story/program alone - it is a CLASSIC ! . . .IMHO . . .
