Fred Dibnah's work revisited, Barrow Bridge Chimney Bolton

- Mr H visits Barrow Bridge Chimney in Bolton to take a look at the chimney which legendary Steeplejack the late great Fred Dibnah claimed to have climbed in the 1979 Documentary 'Steeplejack' to win a 10 shilling bet when he was 15 years old and is the same chimney that he would return to decades later to repair with fellow Steeplejack Simon Warner in 1996.

Fred was a legend he made us realise how intresting and important history is
I am really fascinated by Fred Dibnah. I am also very interested in the history of textile industry. But its sad to see that more and more of the old mills and chimneys are dissappearing
Still watch him whenever he’s on TV. He had an incredible way of explaining things. Really brought our industrial past to life. Rest ease Fred. Cheers for a a great video.

I was lucky enough to spend 10 minutes with fred in a shed at an old pottery as he stoked a steam engine. It was up towards kendal. Nice bloke, liked his beer.

As I said many times during the making of my daily lockdown vlogs or 'veelogs' as I liked to call them I wasn't a vlogger by nature and was just as eager as many of you out there to get back to doing this type of video as I prefer them as well! @@MrHsHotPot I watched a couple of Fred's Documentaries last night - He was doing that work so cheaply, and still Courtaulds wanted to knock him back! - Even back then £500 for dropping a chimney was 'Bargain Basement!' However and surprisingly, he excelled as a Presenter - And he played it as 'Fred!'
Came up from Cornwall to see Fred's yard and went to see this chimney, I picked up a brick as back then there was loads on the ground at the base of it. I gave the brick away to charity a while later but wish i keeped it now. Fred was a true gent. And much missed.
I stumbled upon a video showing this remarkable man who climbed very tall chimneys. His name was Fred Dibnah. I have been in total amazement ever since.
Fred was the Epitome of The Man ! One of the bravest, hardest working man I've ever come across. I would've loved to have met him and shake his hand.
R.I.P. old fella. You were amazing !
By the way, if you could track down Simon Warner and share some yarns and maybe some pictures, that would be great.

Nice little video about BarrowBridge chimney, Fred was a character and a half , he was a pleasure to work with (97/98) on the Ukrainian club in Bolton, I was a scaffolder working on the site and he lived less than an 1/8th of a mile away, we had a brilliant time chatting about different things as well as the job in hand. Mr H you mentioned that Bolton being under the a umbrella of Greater Manchester, I seem to remember something about this as well, wasn’t the creation/expansion of the Greater Manchester some ploy to get more money in for the area? (I’ll have to check it out and get back to you). As far as the people who lived in Bolton was not happy about the boundary of Greater Manchester moving and there was an uproar about it, even to this day that we still put Lancs in the postal address to this day! Do we as a people miss Fred, of course we do , we was seen very regularly driving about in Bolton in his series 2 or 2A Land Rover that has the signature alloy scaffolding frame on the back.

Very nice to see someone still commemorating the Legendary Fred Dibnah ... I just recently (last night) sat and watched about 12+ hours of old footage including 1979’s “STEEPLEJACK” then seeing this being uploaded so recently really legitimises his outstanding life and works, great man great story and a great loss ... let’s just hope his legacy lives on and on ... great video btw 👍

Nice one Mr H, it's been a while since I watched the 1979 documentary 'Steeplejack' about Fred. Thankfully someone had uploaded it to TH-cam from VHS and I very much enjoyed watching it again this evening. Ah, in the days before health and safety! What a character Fred was, he's sadly missed.. Xx

It's amazing to think that the chimney at Barrow Bridge has played such a big part in Fred Dibnah's life and maybe the gravestone in the shape of a chimney that Fred always wanted should have been styled on this one. Regarding the India Mill chimney in Darwen it is on my to do list and I believe that Fred like many other Steeplejacks who have worked on it before and after him left his mark on the chimney by carving 'F.D. 91' into the stonework but I believe it is somewhere up near the top and as much as I try to document every detail that I can into a video there are limits! I had lived in Bolton for 40 years and I don't anyone who would give there postal address as Greater Manchester ... always Bolton, Lancashire!!! PS - I met Fred a few times and what you see on the TV was exactly what you get face to face.

God bless Fred Dibnah, he was a Victorian man trapped in a new age. His life should be used to teach kids in schools these days about what hard graft was and how it carved it's way to what we have now.

great story, been to Bolton lots racing slot cars in the 70s..two dates you mention 79 and 96... funny cos I left for New Zealand in 79 and returned in 96 for a holiday,originally from Wallasey on the wirral, nice video, yes Fred was a legend, wish I had met him, ...bless :)

I have to date managed to track down five other locations that were featured in the early Fred Dibnah TV documentaries and another chimney in Bolton that Fred climbed to place a huge red nose on the top for Comic Relief Day back in the 90's. I'm also working on tracing the route through the part of Bolton where he crashed his famous steam roller through a wall which I'm hoping to film and overlay with Fred relating the story during an after dinner speech. So keep an eye on my channel as I will get round to doing them when I find the time. Cheers and all the best. 👍

nice vid. actually passed some of Freds work on the way to malham tarn yesterday. the weather cock on the church at Kirkby malham.
I watched the episode of him making it and fitting it to the pole on the church roof a few weeks ago. so made sure I stopped to have a look and remember him.
Hi Trail-Finder, St Michael's Church in Kirkby Maltham is of the Fred Dibnah locations I'm hoping to visit myself at some point in the future to do a then & now style of video from. Hopefully by then The Victoria Inn will be open again as I believe some scenes were shot inside the pub of Fred drinking with the vicar of St Michael's at the time and some of the locals. However this is one for way in the future I think as just like Fred, for me Skipton is a bit out of my way.

Fantastic video and very interesting, I’ve watched and read most material on Fred and his exploits, I even once met him at Asda Blackburn.... me,my wife and little lad who was about 18 months old and rather fat were cued at the tills with Fred behind us. Fred said to my son “ by eck lad thas must like thi mothers steak pudding” lovely guy and very much missed. RIP Fred.
They need to remove those plants growing out the side of the chimney as they will weaken the bricks.

You definitely need to get yourself a drone for some spectacular high shots, especially as a lot of them can be pre programmed with a flight plan.
